    Thank you USMB for playing this Wagner overture, it's a great piece. When I was a university student in Puerto Rico, I played in the university band Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Franz Lehar's Merry Widow suite.

    What an astonishing accomplishment. In listening I quite forgot this wasn't being played by a symphony orchestra. A credit to any musical assembly and especially to the US Marines. Top marks. Surely this must set a new standard for classics scored for the brass band.

      This is not a brass band, but a concert band or symphonic wind ensemble, as the presence of the woodwinds attests to. Also, they do not use the traditional conical bore brass instruments that the brass bands do, except for a few instances, like when they have the trumpets play cornets.

    • @grizzlyganymede

      Thanks and ouch - naughty of me not taking enough care to differentiate. Nevertheless the ensemble by whatever categorization doesn't dim my opinion of the result. BTW - I wonder how many other works from the classical repertoire would go with similar treatment from these performers?

The director always left the door open so the rest of the school could hear. Just good memories of this type of music. To be truthful, I think this band could have been a lot better in this performance. A glockenspiel would have helped to accentuate the brass in their main themes, And perhaps better microphone set ups or technician recording would have made it better

    • @rickstadel5285
      @rickstadel5285 2 роки тому +2

      Have you listened in headphones -- and not just laptop or TV speakers? Try it. I bet you'll like it better. BTW, I've been in the percussion section (of an actual orchestra) playing this and I don't remember there being a glockenspiel part .. probably wouldn't be very Wagner-esque. I could be wrong.

    • @LyleFrancisDelp
      @LyleFrancisDelp Рік тому

      Though I've used glockenspiel to add a touch of sparkle at times, I chose to stay with the original brass in this work in order to keep Wagner's original color. TBH, it just isn't needed here.

      One of his favorites. Hitler also loved Beethoven's 3rd and 9th Symphonies. Rienzi was also a favorite of his. It details a Italian hero who tried to unite Italy. The nobles revolted against him, and the people turned on him, and murdered him and his sister. It was very similar to the Mussolini story.
