Davie, I have been a big fan of your amazing fly tying skills and wonderful videos for at least three years.I live on Puget Sound in the State of Washington where I fly fish for Native Sea-Run Cutthroat Trout and Salmon. I teach fly tying and fly fishing classes and always tell folks that watching you tie has been the equivalent of a Master's class in fly tying. I have been tying for many years but my skill level rose dramatically after watching you tie and studying your videos. As I was watching you tie the PMD emerger I was thinking "how amazing that you never break your thread or pull the hackle from the hackle pliers". As I was watching you did just that! It made the videos a bit more realistic knowing the even the Masters make a mistake now and then. I am in awe of your fly tying skills and creations.
I have had this fantasy that before I die(and time's a' wasting as I am almost 70 years old) I would journey across the big pond and have a tying session or two with you.

I'm just a normal guy and I can break a hackle just as good as anyone and not forgetting the odd thread, I've just got used to it...

Great pattern. I tie this down to a size 22. The body is thread only that I darken to form a rib. Thorax is a burnt orange dub (just a faint drop).
I enjoyed the tying Davie... a different sort of fly for me.

Nice fly Davie! Like 2 in 1. Very smart and simple, despite tip toeing through the deer hair. I don't know if I'm able to tye it that small but I'll start big and work my way down. It's similar to how I had to tye Rosenbauer snowshoe emerger because I never heard of nor had cdc at the time, same idea with color of the nymph or shuck followed by the adult of the of the same mayfly. Dear Davie,
Thought I would share a quick story, I caught 20 plus trout on he river Rur with this fly in Monschau, Germany. Also had one large fish take it. However I was too slow with the set.
Another day I was on the river Kyll, near Gerolstein, Germany. Was mainly fishing a comparadun with some success. However , I came upon a fish in the flats that was sipping flies. I tried several dun patterns, with no avail. Then I tied your pmd emerger on, and first cast I made a nice presentation, sure enough the fish slurped it. A very subtle take. However in the flats , it was easy to see. It was a good sized Bach trout. 15 inches or so.
Anyways I just wanted to tell you thanks for this great pattern.

This looks like a great fly. I would think you can use it starting of a hatch all the way till the fish stop coming up. I like it because it has a more realistic rear end instead of just some fibers imitating a shuck. Great job!

Hands down ones of the most effective dry flies/emerger patterns I tie and use. I also sub deer hair out for snow shoe, and sub the pheasant tail fiber for a few strands of marabou. Very very effective pattern., fun to tie as well 😋
Snow shoe rabbit works great I use it as much as I can on dries.
This is such a great fly. I used it in Yellowstone National Park and had such great success. I had a 30 fish day when they were hitting PMD’s. If you ever come to the states I would like to meet you in person.

A very nice fly Davie. When you were tying in the tail you said to make it the "body" length. Is the 'body' length actually the abdomen? Perhaps that's why some of my flies always have too long of a tail as I included the thorax in the measurement.

The abdomen is the body of the fly and doesn't include the thorax as you said though if the flies work for you don't change them. I do like to have a smaller tail especially when using pheasant tail fibres as they will last longer than if they were too long..

Thanks Davie. I think if I have one consistent flaw in my nymphs it is the tail is too long. But they must grow while in the box because they normally look good in the vise. Merry Christmas

Cock or hen hackle fibres from a cape of similar colour to the pheasant tail would be just as good and would probably last a tad longer...I'm glad you liked the fly...

Dave, could you recommend an online supplier of fly tying materials? Being based in France I fish in the Pyrenees a lot but find it difficult (and expensive) to get materials. Colin

Hi Ken,
I use a Sony AX100e which I bought earlier in the year. To get a closeup I use a +1 or +2 filter which screws onto the end of the lens, the stronger the magnification the closer you need to have the camera to the fly so I use a small desktop tripod as this makes the difference when filming flies..I would say though there's cheaper cameras out there that will do a good job just as well but you will have to buy the filters to suit and they don't cost a lot of money..

Davie McPhail . Thanks for that Davie, I think I am getting there. Small desktop tripod arrived today. Camera I have is a Canon DSLR 700d with 60mm macro lens. Tried the set up out today with some success. Thanks for being free with good advice, and thanks for posting the best tying videos on the internet. Regards Ken.

davie uses a LAW vice; they were made to order years ago by a UK precision machinist by the name of lawrence Waldron. they are no longer in production and sell for thousands used, so good luck finding or affording one. there are many other fine vices out there for a fraction of the cost. i just purchased an American made regal revolution vise and it is truly a fine vise, it comes with a lifetime warranty and I'm sure I will have it forever. here's more information about the law vise to drool over:
