The targeting rule was implemented into the nfl in 2008. So before that there really wasn’t any penalty for “head to head” or targeting.

The hit made on the #10 receiver diving for the football was brutal. That was Emmanuel Sanders for my hometown Broncos and he was severely injured from that play. Didn't return for a good while. If you wanna see another vicious hit like that, I suggest reacting to Johnny Knox's hit. Often voted as the most brutal hit in the NFL, and it ended his career.

Hey NZ family. I love all your videos. I played football in high school. I was a linebacker, so was on the defense. To answer Nadine's question, yes it does hurt some when you hit. But I think a part of it has to do with momentum and force. When I was moving forward and hitting the offensive player, I felt like the blow was a lot less for me. Additionally, since I saw it coming, I controlled where I was hitting on my own body. In this way, the physics encouraged aggression really, as it hurts less to hit someone than to be hit.

I never played organized football, but I played competitive hockey for years, and in my experience, it always hurt far less being the hitter than the hittee. I have to imagine its the same in football.

I played middle linebacker, and the hardest hit I had I didn’t feel, but the running back was unconscious. A coach said “You’re either the hammer or the nail” and that’s the best way to describe how it feels.

Happy to see a number of my 49ers in the replays. Ronnie Lott (#42) was an intense hitter. He broke a finger on a tackle in one game. In order to miss the least amount of time in the season he opted to have it amputed at the knuckle vs having it set and heal.

He was awesome... Another defensive back that was tough as nails was Donnie Shell of the Steelers. I was at a game in the Astrodome between the Oilers and Steelers when Earl Campbell was handed the ball - he was mountain and routinely just ran over people - but on this play, Shell came up and hit him so hard - Campbell was knocked backwards off his feet - you could hear that hit throughout the entire dome.

Yea... "The Bus"... Most defensive players especially Defensive Back or Corner Backs absolutely hated trying to tackle him. All he did was run at you full speed and lower his shoulder. They said it was like getting hit by car. That is why they were always told to try and hit him low and from the side if possible. Otherwise it would hurt getting hit by the The Bus.

Adrenalin is fun... way back in the early 1970's - when metal tipped cleats were still a thing,
I know a high school lineman (big guy - 180-190centimeters over 100 kilos) at the end of a big game,
they noticed his uniform was bloody (long sleeves).
He had a cleat gash that took a dozen stitches to close - he never noticed it during the game.
So - how do those guys get back up? Yeah. it's only later that they'll really feel that hit.
As always, you guys are a joy to watch.

Nice reactions guys. For many years guys were taught to stick the helmet in, but to hit with the face not the crown. Those top of the helmet hits cause many injuries to the guy doing the hitting, due to the neck compression. Some of these clips would not be legal today, but they still happen. You guys (if you haven't already) should check out some of the more beautiful and graceful parts of the game. Here is a link to a video of the great running back Barry Sanders and 50 of his greatest runs. Where he grew up, they didn't have tackle football for kids, so he played flag football. He says he learned many of his moves and jukes then, making guys miss when trying to pull his flags. I saw an interview once with a defensive player who when asked about tackling (or trying to) Barry said I swear the guy can cut and change direction even when his feet are off the ground. LOL. Hope you all enjoy this. Okay UA-cam won't let me copy and paste the link (maybe it's because it's an NFL channel video). Just search Barry Sanders 50 most ridiculous plays of all time. Cheers.

You should watch the highlights of the one of the most vicious players that ever played the game - Dick Butkus - Chicago Bears. The man was feared by entire teams - he specialized in intimidation.
The only other player I would put in his league is Jack Lambert - Pittsburgh Steelers. Lambert was another man that players and entire teams feared - he was brutal.
Both Butkus and Lambert played middle linebacker and viewed the opposing players as enemies when on the field - no mercy - they wanted to hurt. No one wanted to run up the middle or cross thru it - they knew the freight train was coming.
I remember a game where Lambert hit the running back straight up - picked him up and pile drove him into the turf - and stood over him - daring him to get up...

As a 6 time Super Bowl champion Steelers fan, you should watch some of the hits during a Steelers/Ravens game. It's brutal. Those two teams respectfully hate each others guts. Usually one or two players need help off the field during the game. If you want to see a real hit, watch the 2008 AFC Championship game, Ravens at Steelers. With around 3 or 4 minutes left to play, the Steelers Ryan Clark leveled the Ravens Willis McGahee. It caused a fumble to seal the game for the Steelers. Both players didn't get up for a few minutes. McGahee needed to be taken off in a stretcher. ua-cam.com/video/qxxjWPeIwxA/v-deo.html Enjoy.

I remember that game well and while the Steelers and Ravens were/are rivals, no one wants to see a rival player taken off the field in a stretcher. It was brutal and an intense last few minutes in the game.

I’m currently a freshman in high school and to answer your question, a lot of hits hurt from the collision alone but it’s always worse for one person involved than the other depending on technique. A good mindset I like to have is that if you get into the highlights make sure you’re the one making the play not the other way around.

At the end there, no: kicking someone in the face is illegal.
It was a penalty and I believe he got fined. That was Antonio Brown who has had some .... issues.
Cheering the Bengals. I went to Ohio State, and a bunch of former Buckeyes are on that team. Also, I was an Ickey Woods fan, back the last time the Bengals were relevant. You should look up the Ickey Shuffle, I'd love seeing Denz do it for the big game

Hey Nadine. Just wanted to answer your question. The tackler isn't normally the one who gets hurt. The notable exception is if they're a rookie who hasn't worked out their tackling technique; like a high school athlete or below.
In training, you're taught to aim and hit in such a way that your body can withstand it. It's called Form Tackling. But if it's just a kid who's new on a team and doesn't know their limits on the field, they do sometimes hit or land awkward.

I was born, and still live, 40 miles northeast of Cincinnati. When the team started up in the 60's, the players went to local grade school to play our teachers in a game of basketball. I was 9 then. Born in the Bengals original summer home, Wilmington Ohio. Went to college in their second home, Georgetown College, Georgetown KY. In our household, my mom was the football fan. She ran our dad into the bedroom to watch John Wayne, so we could watch the Bengals. The player they show after LT was Von Miller, who played for the LA Rams against the Bengals.

Football was fun before all these new rules. I played defensive tackle at the college level and it was so much fun! The game was way more physical a decade ago. And back in the 70's to the early 2000's it was absolutely brutal. My career was cut short due to blowing my knee out against UCLA. My brother went on to be drafted by the Chicago Bears, my cousin Haloti to the Baltimore Ravens, Dad played at the Packers, uncle played at the Steelers and countless others who played in the NFL. They all have the funnest stories of games and hits and whatnot. Good times..

Sam you being a rugby player, you understand what most of these hits are about. Thus the groan. I like your channel. Take care of yourself and your family. I have noticed that in most sports, the players just keep getting bigger and faster. Back in the 60's and 70's when I played football a 200 pounds was considered big. Now a days the quarterback weigh 200 pounds or more. Major university teams and most of the pro lineman are 300 pounds or more. And they can run. I bones hurt watching some of these hits. Stay safe....

Not sure if you already knew this but if not, Sean Taylor (the guy who made the big hits at 6:21 and 6:30) was bound to be one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history until he was tragically murdered during a home invasion in 2007. His career highlight reel is definitely worth watching.
