  • Comparing the performance of the 3.3hp and 5hp Mercury outboards on the same Aluminium boat. Both of these outboards are built by Tohatsu in Japan, I love the smallerTohatsu (50hp and lower), great motors.

    thanks for the comparison. it puts the electric outboard companies' "3hp" claims into perspective. the 3.3 actually moves the boat quite well!

    That’s incredible that a 3.3 hp outboard will plane a boat. Thank You!

      yes but that boat it's pretty much empty... add 2 other guys in the boat plus some fishing gear and then the 3.3hp will move the boat at 5km/h. Not by near enough to plane the boat, but good enough to move from one place to another in a lagoon.
      the 5hp won't plane either if fully loaded, but will move the boat around 8 to 10km/h, and will endure a little better against waves

    Those 5's are awesome. What length is your tinny? I had mine on a friend's 10ft fg dink. It would get stuck at around 20kph. When I moved forward it accelerated to 24 and when I moved back again it went all the way to 28kph. Just needed that little c.g. shuffle to help it get on the plane.

      Get anywhere from a 6 to a 15 depends where you are. In the creeks a 6 is ok but if you want to go the ocean get a 8hp or a 9.9 so you don’t have too much weight but enough power for the boat. If you’re going on a big lake go all out an get a 15. Plenty of speed for tubing but also if it breaks you don’t get eaten by a shark.

      Hi mate,
      That tinny is 10ft and pretty light.
      A 5hp won’t go that fast on a 13ft tinny.
      If your used to a 15, a 5hp will feel pretty sad. If your happy to put around then it’s up to you.
      The 5hp I was testing was a two stroke so not too sure how the 4 stroke 5hp compares but probably similar.
      I would personally be looking for a good 15hp second hand but like I said, if your happy to put around at about 12-15kph flat out then all good.
      Hope this helps,
      Cheers

    • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  3 роки тому +1

      Sure,
      The 3.3hp has a 1.4 liter internal fuel tank. I’ve found I get about 1hr running time out of that 1.4 liter tank if I’m cruising at about 4000rpm. Full throttle uses the tank up in about 40mins.
      I just carry a 5litre jerry if I’m going any place when I will use more than a tank. Keep in mind i can probably get about 10 kilometers on one tank for a distance reference if the motor is on a small tinny or small inflatable.
      Normally if I’m going far I take a bigger outboard, but it does still happen from time to time.

      Normally only the 2.5hp has no neutral and is just direct drive.
      The 3.3hp has neutral and reverse.
      The only difference in the 2.5hp and the 3.3hp is a restriction washer behind the carburetor, so if it’s a 2.5hp you can just remove that if the want the 3.3hp.
      Does your motor still have the model and serial number?

In NSW under 4 kilowatts no need to register boat, a 5hp is about 3.7 kilowatts. His age can’t do more than 10 knots . Anywa, what size of 5 hp fuel tank and what time/kms you get from it. • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  3 роки тому +2

      Sounds like a good deal to me.
      I’m in NSW so same rules here.
      The 5hp Mercury - tohatsu normally has an inbuilt Fuel tank, some did come without the internal tank but all of them can connect to an external tank. You don’t need any bigger than a 12 liter tank. If you decide to just run with the internal tank (which is totally fine) I would carry an extra 5 liter jerry van onboard as well. The 5hp on my tinny reached about 15 knots with just me in the boat. The waterways authority and water police have not ever had an issue in my experience with speed if the motor is under 6hp.
      If the boat has more than one person in it it will be considerably slower.
      Hope this helps.

    • @25hpboatracerman

      With the 5hp, sitting in the middle or the back does not really make a difference to the speed as it’s fully up on the plane.
      The 3.3hp just doesn’t quite get there so sitting in the middle forces the nose of the boat down, leveling it out and slight increase to speed.

      Good point mate.
      I tried sitting on the middle seat with the 5hp, i actually lost speed by 1.7kph. I think I lost speed due to the front being pushed down while being up on the plane (skimming over the surface). The 3.3hp does not have enough power to get up on the plane (skimming over the surface) so sitting on the middle seat and dropping the front seemed to increase speed as I saw by the GPS read outs. Interesting that sitting on the middle seat with the 3.3hp increased top speed and sitting on the middle seat with the 5hp decreased speed.

      Hi mate,
      If it a light 3.5m tinny with nothing much on board apart for you at 50kgs, with the 5hp two stroke I reckon you might see the same numbers.
      Cheers 🍻

    Does anybody know if the 3.3 hp Mercury needs a mix of gas and oil in the tank?

    • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  5 років тому +1

      Absolutely, it needs 50 to 1 fuel to oil mix. Make sure to use marine two stroke oil (not lawnmower oil that is designed for a different running temperature)
      Outboard two stroke only!
      Every 5 liters of fuel needs 100ml of two stroke outboard oil.
      Have fun.
      Ps the motor will only run for about 3 mins without oil and will cause enough damage internally to require a rebuild.
      Cheers,
      Glenno

      @@25hpboatracerman what is the consumption?

    • @25hpboatracerman
      @25hpboatracerman  2 роки тому

      The 5hp can go about 10km distance on its 2.5 liter tank and the 3.3hp can get about 5.5km distance in its 1.4 liter tank.

      Not sure why your only getting about 2 kilometers.
      What size boat is it on and how heavy? Did you measure the distance with a gps?
      Distance on water is hard to judge without a gps.

      I have 3.5hp Mariner (Tohatsu) on a 2.4m dinghy and i average around 20-24kmh. With 2 people on it slows down to 9-10kmh though.

      The 4 strokes are not just heavier, but never seem to be able to give the power they are listed at. A 5hp 2 stroke will in many circumstances feel twice as powerful as a 5hp 4 stroke. It also drinks twice the fuel of course! As for noise, well single cylinder 4 strokes can be noisier at speed than the 2 stroke.
