This hair tutorial will show you how to cut your own hair in layers. This is great if you want to get rid of split ends that are dry and splayed. I used the ponytail technique to create shorter layers at the front of my face and longer layers at the back. I saw this method of cutting hair on Pinterest quite some time ago and I've been using it since (before this I was using the hair slithering technique to create layers). The result is a layered haircut in a soft V shape at the back. You can either use thinning scissors to soften the bluntness of the ends or your can use the point cutting technique which I showed you in the video. To do the point cutting technique, slide your fingers horizontally down your hair to flatten the tip of your hair and cut into your ends using the points of the scissors. Good luck!
♥ What you'll need:
Flat Iron
Hair Brush
Hair Ties
Hair Cutting Scissors
Thinning / Texturizing Scissors

I've been cutting my hair with this video for 4 years and it comes out great everytime and saves me so much money. Thanks girl !
same!!!!
To those thinking of trying this method. This was my first attempt at cutting my own hair (which was hanging below my buttocks). I was extremely nervous. But it worked so well. I will likely never see the inside of a hair salon again because this video and some comments below gave me the confidence to do it myself. Thank you for sharing this method with the world, @bebexo
To hair stylists. The main reasons why I wanted to learn how to cut my own hair are:
1) I'm severely allergic to artificial fragrance and therefore can't be in most hair salons, let alone have someone put it onto my hair. I have to use products that don't contain harmful chemicals.
2) Even if the products are all-natural, I find it extremely uncomfortable when hair stylists pressure me to get all sorts of treatments done and buy the products. I understand you want to make sales but it's tiring to have to explain why I can't use just any products and then endure a lecture like I don't know what's good for me.
I have a similar problem with fragrances. Some nearly cause me to suffocate. They could be Weapons of Mass Destruction as far as my sinuses react! Some people seem to drench themselves.
Hey guys, my hair and nails have been growing so quickly lately (thanks to being preggo heh) so I thought I'd take the opportunity to show you how I cut and layer my own hair at home. Thumbs up if you found this helpful and don't forget to share this video. ^_^ Happy hairstyling! xoxo
Sadly... About 3 months after you have your baby it will all fall out. =( so I highly suggest you don't cut it.
+Rae-Ann Casillas I've had 2 kids and never had it "all fall out. " I've hardly had but a little more than usual come out when I brush it after washing it, sometimes not even that. Not to mention, not cutting it wouldn't make a difference even IF that were true. If it all falls out like you say, then having it long will make absolutely no difference, right? Not all women experience the minimal hair loss after pregnancy anyway.
Ellen O yay for you!! But I had 2 kids lost my hair both times! And it's because it never fell out when I was pregnant and I also breast fed. Maybe that's why it did... Just wanted to give a for warning. I didn't cut my hair the second time because I did the first and because so much fell out it was like I had no hair! No it wouldn't stop it but a short hair cut with thin hair is ugly!!!
+Rae-Ann Casillas it's not "Yay for me"...you said that as though it's a fact and that it happens to everyone, and like it "all falls out." I was just saying that that's not exactly true, and that you're beyond exaggerating. Also, if it all falls out then it doesn't matter if it's long or short...it's going to ALL fall out regardless (according to you).
+Ellen O well when you got bald spots because of all the hair that falls out to me that's all falling out. Chill!!! And yes yay for you. You are so lucky your one of the ones with no hair loss and no bald spots! Woop dee doo!!!
After a failed attempt last night at trying to have my husband cut my hair, I tried following your tutorial. It was so unbelievably easy, and the result was as good as any cut I've received in a salon! Excited about all the money I will now save on cutting my own hair. Thank you so much! :-)

I'm a hairstylist and this is the best video for cutting your own hair if you prefer that...l tried this and it works great ....use good scissors. Tho it really.makes a different...dont use kitchen scissors..lol

So I just did this, and let me tell you, it looks SO FREAKING CUTE!!!! It's also completely even all the way around. Just know that if you do the pony tail close to your forehead like she does, the look is very layered around your face and does not take a lot off of the length. My bangs are easily 4 inches shorter than they were before and I believe only about an inch was taken off of the back. I've been wanting to learn how to cut my own hair for a while though because I think it is ridiculous to pay $20, which is what the salons around me usually charge. As a college student who is not working, I need to budget every penny. I'm so glad Bebexo made this video because my hair feels so refreshed and it was free! Thank you!!!
back in the late 70s, cosmopolitan magazine had an article on how to cut your hair very similar to this. I cut my hair that way for almost 35 years. saved me a lot of money.
oh my god my mom had that article and she cuts my hair with those directions
+Quel Smith That is funny. Gave me a good smile. I learned a lot of stuff from that magazine, but this hair cutting hack was by far the best money saving tip ever. Tell your mom hi from me.
@@deborahrabadi3883 My mom did that as well and always said it was from the magazine! So funny. I now cut both mine and my family's hair using this method :)
My mom does that. I am 13 and she cuts my hair at home. And now i started to do it on my own.
It's like UA-cam is today's magazine!
I have done this twice now since Covid started and I am in LOVE with my hair...like seriously better than any haircut I’ve gotten in a salon. May not work for everyone’s hair but I have completely different hair than OP and it turned out beautiful on me 😊 so happy she shared this! I have long thick wavy hair and cut it wet 👍🏼
Yup mine is between a 2 a and b and was past my butt. I love how this turned out and was actually easy to follow. I also took around 5 inches off
I have been doing this since I watch the video. I also hate the hairdressers and find that I am never happy when I leave and it always costs me so much money. This video is one of the best I've ever seen!!! Andnit works. I can now trim my hair the recommended every 6 weeks and have healthy hair which I could never do going to a salon!
Everyone, i just cut my hair. And i thought it wouldnt turn out well but here i am loving my new hair. I didnt even follow the step one by one, didnt even straighten my wavy hair and just cut it right away. But all is good. Thank youuuu
WOW amazing!!
Holy shit get this girl a medal I did it and it looked pretty damn good
I just followed this tutorial, spent more time straightening my hair than cutting it. And honestly, it's top 5 haircuts of my whole life. Thanks for the tutorial, so easy to do!
This is so amazing💝💖 I have never cut hair (I’m 12). I didn’t tell my strict mom. And when I came into the living room she said ;
,,You’re hair looks better somehow!”
Like WOW😻😻
I have long hair & I tried this yesterday....girrrrlll thank you for saving me $80!!!! I followed this video exactly, but I didn’t feather anything. Just snipped a few inches off and done! My layers are even and my hair looks fresh. Thanks girl!
I did exactly the same!!!!
I’ve been cutting my own hair for years in just a straight blunt way because I had no clue how to do it more “styled” but I came across this and absolutely love the results!
Ooook I have done this twice and I must weigh in. Do you see how small her head is? Well, maybe it’s small to me because mine is like a cabbage on a stick. Anyways, if you have a huge head, do NOT put the ponytail all the way forward at the brim of the forehead unless you want an Alabama mullet. Instead, do a high ponytail somewhere between the bump on the biggest part of your skull and the direct top of your head. (Aka, put it BACK further so the front layers won’t be as short.) This will give you good layers and keep you from looking like Joe Dirt. The second time I did it, I followed my own advice and this took me 5 minutes and it looked great. Good luck
Can't stop laughing at the "Alabama mullet" and looking like Joe Dirt
What if you have a medium sized head? lol I'm not sure where to put the ponytail if I do mine...
oh my god I wish I had seen this comment before I cut my hair!!! I have a decently “big” head and i put the ponytail right at the edge of my forehead (HUUUUGE MISTAKE). my front layers were shorter than I would’ve liked, especially when my hair was up to my hips before I cut it 😭😭😭
Ffs I wish I read this comment before I tried this 😩😩
Me too 🥲
Like many, tried this because of coronavirus this morning. I never comment on stuff like this but it was so easy and it honestly worked perfectly. My hair is about 2/3's down my back, and I cut off about 5 inches this morning to get rid of all the dead ends. It looks awesome and I will definitely be doing this again even if coronavirus goes away. Thank you so much!!
Thanks for sharing, did you use professional scissors? For cutting hair? What size? Thanks
Just tried this. At first didn't think it was going to work but it did! Helped remove my split ends and get my layers even easily.

Yeah, mine didn't turn out so well, lol. Short in front, long in back. Literally 2 layers.
@Jasmine Kiss wish I read your comment earlier
OMG! i literally did this with my hair and I'm SHOCKED with the amazing results omg!!!!!! LIKE WOW its exactly the type of layers I LIKE also. I have to wash my hair still but I'm loving how it looks right now I'm soooo happy I came across this video thank you thank you!!!!
Who else is here because of the Coronavirus? Lmao 🙋🏼♀️ I just tried this a few hours ago and it actually worked really well!! Legit af! I took like 3 or 4 inches off 🥰
Hahahhaha going to try it tomorrow. Tired of always tied hair, hard to brush it after few days... wanna make it shorter... Let's see how it will end up...only don't have second type of scissors on video...
Me! Lol! My daughter needs a haircut so I'm gonna do this method for her.😊
How did the layers look

@@kelliannespry3912 my daughter had long hair and the cut came out just like the lady in the video. Looks good, though! I really like it. Now just gotta figure out how to shorten the length. 😊

I was only getting my hair trimmed once a year on my bday because I once asked for a trim and walked out with a stacked bob..... but now that my hair is nearly to my hips it was becoming unmanageable. This was a LIFESAVER!!!
Do you have any tips for growing your hair that long?
I just cut my hair using this method and it looks amazing. My hair is really thick, but this tutorial seems to work for all hair types.
Thanks for posting this video! Very helpful.
i considered trying brad mondo's method, but i decided to come back to this method lmao been using this method for years, and its honestly fool proof and simple
I have been using a similar technique to cut my hair for several years. While it worked really well, it cut my hair straight across. I’ve been missing my layers so I was super excited when I came across your video. I followed your instructions and my hair came out amazing! I have hair as long as yours and my layers are long and fall beautifully whether my hair is towards the front or back. I am SO excited! Thank you so very much for posting this simple but effective technique =)
Total life saver! I used this method before to trim my hair and recently decided to get a haircut a hair salon and OMG. They did me dirty. Good length they cut it at, TERRIBLE ‘layers’. It was so choppy, I remembered this method and rewatched this video just to make sure, and used this method to correct the uneven choppy layers the ‘stylist’ left me
204liz That’s why I’m here right now! You’ve convinced me to finally try this.
My hair is mid back length and needed a trip, I tied it around my forehead, then the second tie at my third chin, it worked well! Thanks!
At my third chin...lol
Third chin 😂 out of curiosity, how many do you have? Lol
Bought some new sheers and went for it for the first time. ** *Note* ** I DID struggle with cutting off my first ponytail because my hair is thicker than hers, and it didnt cut off so easy. If your hair is thicker, TAKE YOUR TIME to cut it off evenly. I was pushing my scissors too hard to cut it off in one fell swoop like her and ended up with a crooked cut. I was able to even it up (a LITTLE at a time) but it worried me until I did. I didn't have thinning shears but that's ok, point cutting worked just fine. THANK YOU for this video. I'll save myself 50$/cut and will cut it more often now to maintain healthy long hair. No more frizz and putting it off!
I got thin hair it took one snip just left it blunt it looks like i only cut bangs oh how i wish I had a little bit thicker hair
Tried layering my hair two weeks ago from a different diy video and i still wasn’t satisfied. I was so tempted to call for a hair appointment but I thought to myself why not try it one more time. So I looked up other diy hair layer videos and saw this one. Tried it immediately and it was perfect! It was exactly what I wanted for my hair❤️. Definitely saved around $50
I can't believe how easy this was and how well it works! I've never ever dared to cut my own hair but this is what I'm doing from now on. Thank you!!

This method is so great. I've been so scared to cut my hair but I finally decided to do this today and it really works! My split ends are now gone and my hair still looks super long and now healthy. So happy I found this so I dont have to spend 40 dollars to get my hair trimmed at a salon.
I literally did this at home during quarantine and it worked so well.
OMG your hair looks SO healthy and gorgeous! So jelly! This is an amazing technique thanks for sharing!
I have curly hair and I didn't straighten it before; I made a ponytail as shown in the video and combed it (I did not wash my hair before). I proceeded as said with the cutting and thinning out and opened my hair, then I redid it with just the top layer of hair which doesn't curl so much and therefore needed some extra cutting (it got shorter compared to the hair that curls a lot since the curls straightened a bit due to the ponytail). I barely cut anything extra there, but I thinned out the ends a bit more; I cut that layer quite short last time so there was no need to cut it again; it was also still healthy. So yeah, it can also be used for curly hair but might need some individual adjustment.
Nice video btw, well explained and nice to listen.

Thanks for taking the time to tell us what you did! I just found this video and being a minimalist I don't own things like straighteners, but I do have a fair bit of curl, so i was wondering if it would be OK. Thanks to your feedback i feel confident giving this a try! :-)

You're welcome. :)
That's why she said to "straighten" your hair first!! Smh
Thanks for this video. It is such a nice and simple way to cut. I looked at other videos for doing layers at home and they're all so complicated. I'm glad I found this video bc everytime I went to the hairdresser, he cut the hair way to short. You ask for an inch trim and they cut 5.

Just tried and have to say I am amazed with my perfectly layered hair. Never going back to salon for a layered hair cut. Love this
Recently been obsessed with the long v shaped hair look. Saw the good reviews in the comments and decided to try it on my long (cut straight across, no layers whatsoever) straight black hair. Followed the steps, brought my hair to the front of my head just like her. After the first cut (maybe about 4 inches - palms were so sweaty) it didn’t turn out like a v, maybe a very wide U shape and I imagine it’s because my hair was originally a straight cut. It was almost as if all the hair I cut off was only from the front of my hair. I did the cut again a few days later (2-3 inch) following the same instructions and it turned out nicer, a bit more of a v shape and I kept it like that. A few days ago I decided to do the cut again (maybe only 2-3 inch) and I’m obsessed with how it looks now!! It’s almost as if each cut carved it more and more into the v shape. I’ve kept a lot of my length using this method. I imagine it’s not the best hair style to prevent split ends but I’m happy with it.
Also I have 0 experience cutting hair and no knowledge about hair. This method is very helpful!
Did your hair look good in the first cut. cause I actually have a straight cut so that's why I really want to try but I just want to cut 3 inches
@winglessfairy9448 To help you imagine - if I recall correctly, the first cut I did barely cut any layers at the back of my hair but cut quite a lot at the front which she does mention in the video. Hence why it looked like a U shape, which I guess makes sense if you imagine bunching all your hair at the front of your head you'll be cutting mainly the front parts of your hair, not the back.
I think how this haircut looks also depends how thick your hair is. If you want to try this haircut, only cut a bit at first maybe just an inch, and then take it down, see how it looks before you cut more rather than cutting all 3 inches at once.
I think one thing I wish I did after doing the first cut was try styling my hair because in my opinion this cut looks very nice styled, like nowadays I sleep with my hair in a bun every night just so there's some waves in it, so make sure you try that after you do the cut.
@@auccy955 tysm for ur time...its really helpful
My hair was already in need of a trim before corona-related lockdown, but 3 weeks in and it was a straggly mess! I don't possess hair straighteners as my hair in naturally wavy, and I really don't like the way it looks when it's dead straight. So I washed my hair and waited until it was damp but not wet- just wet enough that it would be dead straight when I combed the sections through. It worked!! Definitely not as good a job as a professional haircut as some commenters have said, but my hair looks so much healthier than it did and will see me through until we're allowed to be in close contact with people again! Thanks for the upload.
No way!!!! I have TONS of thick hair and was worried but I can’t get an appointment for 6 weeks and needed a haircut bad!!! Spent $14 on scissors and got to work! It looks amazing!!!!!!!!
This is literally the greatest hack I have ever come across in my entire life!

I've literally been going back to this video for the last two years to cut my hair. Any time I've asked a hairdresser to do this exact style for me they cut like 7 freaking inches off, so I had to figure out how to do it on my own. THANKS FOR SAVING ME AND MY LONG HAIR.
THIS is exactly why I started cutting my own hair 10 years ago. I'll be the one to say what lenght to cut and I'll be the one brushing it WITHOUT brushing out my helix piercing every damn time even when I say to watch out for it.

1) this is the easiest DIY method ever. You're a genius.
2) it really IS foolproof because I was so afraid I cut too much but it looks AMAZING and I'm so happy that it was so EASY.
3) I realize you put out this video 4 years ago so congrats on the toddler :)

If I tie my hair in a pony tail like that, I see split ends at different heights so I don't think this works for me because I have layered hair already!
I tried this because my hair is pretty thick and they got too long that I got dizzy easily. No way in heck I'm visiting a stylist right now, 2 of my girlfriends did and then both got calls from contract tracers that they were exposed to covid because of the stylist. I live in the same small town. So, I used your method last night with fabulous results! It's the kind of layers that I've always asked stylists to do but none have really garnered the layered and tapered result I was looking for until last night.
#1, I picked up some Goody hair scissors at the local grocer for like $6. #2, I did mine with semi-wet hair as mine is really fine and hard to manage when dry. I finished it off today with dry hair with just a little more tip cutting and to find any irregularities.

debbies fun life I remember when i was like 7 i was alone in a room with scissors so i took them and cut some of my braids off
debbies fun life YEESS
debbies fun life yea I was six I cut off my bangs and I have a triangle of hair on my forehead thank god it was summer
This is me so many times this past year. I don't even care if it doesn't really look even. I get excited to trim it myself every couple months 😀 lol 💇💇 scissor happy
i was like 'i'm so doign this' - till i found out i needed to find 4 hairbands lolololol.. - tomorrow! hazaa!
💇♀️ ✂️ 😱
😂same I’m down to one right now! Where do they all escape to?
blazing angel same!
This is a great video! I usually end up waiting 36 months between haircuts because it feels like a money drain... now I can do it on my own! When I tried it, the layers definitely ended up being more dramatic than I anticipated, so I might move my ponytail back a bit on my head next time. Thanks for the clear directions and great idea!
wow I was told to have it cut every 3 months or so. With this technique we can easily do it our own
Finally built up the courage to try this method out, satisfied with the results. I always dreaded going to the hairdresser as they always ended up cutting way more length than what I wanted. Thank you for the tutorial and to everyone sharing their experience! Haven't cut my hair in 7 years, and I knew that a trim was more than overdue. Happy I got rid of all (well most) of my split ends !
I'm so grateful for this! I always hate how my hair comes out at a salon or barber, this was perfect! Thank you thank you!
Me too. Always look like a grandma after the salon. I am happy I came across this video. Once in 2003 had this haircut and looked great with it. If I ask for this I never get it in the salon
I'll test it on the Barbies first lol 😂📤🔊
Did it work

Lmao idk why but your comment litterally just made me laugh so hard😂
💀😂😂😂😂😂
Me too..😂
My mom cut my hair when i was little. She used regular scissors and left it as a blunt cut. Cri.
I THINK THIS IS THE BEST HAIRCUT VIDEO ON UA-cam!! first i was quite apprehensive, but i still gave it a shot and it actually turned out to be amazing! 😍😍😍
OMGosh!! I am so HAPPY I watched this video!!! I tried it out on my hair & it looks GREAT!!! Thanks for posting this! Although, I think it took me a lil longer than 10 mins cause I don't think I did a perfect job at first (thank God LONG hair LOL), & had to trim it up a bit more to officially get it straight... Thanks again!
Amazing it actually worked! This is so practical for hair maintenance during self-isolation.
I just did this for the first time and mine came out great. Thank you so much! Now I dont have to fork out money to do something I can do myself. 💙💜💙💜💙 Much love to you.
Thank you so much! My ends were so dead, and now they’re gone! I love how it turned out. Your video is a lifesaver for women wanting to save some money and still have their hair looking nice.
I tried it and it worked! I love my layers. Thanks!
The 5.9 k dislikes are from jealous hairdressers because you really nailed ittt!!:D
Absolutely! :)
Me over here with uneven as fuck hair after following all the steps
I always find myself coming back to this video every year once I need to cut my hair again 😂☺️
Oh my gosh this totally worked! I'm 56 have long straight hair and I'm NEVER paying for a hair cut again you are amazing!!! I did a great job thanks to you :)
Hairstylist here. Tried this on myself and it works well :)
Do you know if this works on existing bangs?
lotusbvby I’m so glad s you commented this! I was so nervous to try it, now I feel better lol. Thank you!
I used this exact method on my long hair and it did a great job! The layers are not too much at all so you can't go wrong. The layers fell correctly in the front as well! Just make sure that you pull your hair closer to forward from the start. If you put the pony tail on the top of your head, you will get waayy more layers in the front. Just listen to the video and follow the instructions. The people that messed up seriously didn't listen to the instructions!
Ok I don't want alot of layers in the front by my face, so put the pony tail lined up with the ears?
don't worry about dying your hair sweety, it looks gorgeous as always
Came across this at 2:22am and had to try it! My hair was past my butt and getting extremely heavy.. came out AMAZING!! Thank you so much!❤️💕
note to self:
- cut hair when dry
- tie ponytail further back (the closer to the forehead, the shorter the front layers)
why when dry
@@ramita3788 I've heard hair when wet appears longer than when dry, so you might cut it shorter than you want if you do it when it's wet
@@alexismarie2652 That's only a problem if you pull the hair with your fingers. If you just hold the hair without pulling, theres no problem
That was awesome! Honestly, came out far more evenly layered than when I pay a hairdresser!! So good. Thank you xo
Did this today and honestly the results were everything.
10/10 would recommend!
Thank you lovely lady for making this tutorial
I came back to find this video again just so I can relay how stoked I am at how simple and easy to follow this method is! My hair looks fantastic and so much lighter while still maintaining length. My hair was getting heavy enough to give me headaches and this was the best solution :) thank you for sharing this hack!!
i just cut my hair using this method. i absolutely love it.

Super easy and my hair came out perfectly! My hair was longer than hers and I cut it to the same length she had. Thanks!!!
Yay!! Thank you for this video, I managed to cut my hair by myself because of the covid quarantine!
Because of Covid19 I have been coloring my hair at home but have not cut it in about a year! Found this video an decided to give it a shot; cut just over 6 inches hair looks great got ride of all the split ends and dryness. Hair looks healthier, with more volume and waves look more defined. Would definitely recommend giving a try with a good pair of hair cutting scissors.
