    Great review, Got my Iron Ranger 8111 about 4 years ago, just after getting into your channel. They look fantastic now. I used red wing boot cream on them. I didn’t want to use mink oil, I wanted to keep them as light as possible.

    The Iron Ranger is a classic. Not the fanciest, most durable, warmest or driest. But, iconic looks for every day and casual wear. I have the 8085's and been wearing for ~9 months. I'm loving the patina with only using a horse hair brush.... no conditioning needed thus far. When they get dry, I'm planning to use the Bick4 as you suggested.

    love my IR's and yes the first month of break in was tough but after that they fit like gloves for me feet now and honestly hate taking them off at night. I went with the rough and tough and the patina after 4 months of wear is beautiful. Wasn't 100% on the color at first but once those oils started coming out naturally through wear they are stunning.

    You will love these. I didn't have hard time breaking in at all. Once broken in, as well as the boots developing great patina, you will find the leather buttery soft. absolutely superb. I use Saphir Renovateur as my lotion of choice, Red Wing leather creams also good, that is excellent also at not darkening the leather. Great for normal use.
    As for sizing I think you are spot on with these, half size down from your sneaker size, fit perfect, gripping the heal nicely with plenty of toe wiggle room.
    A few years ago I got a pair of 8083s(Muleskinners), probably my favorite boot, I love them, that was what led me to getting my 8111.
    You was right also about the 270* welt. It gives it a slimmer profile around the heel. A cleaner aesthetic.
    Enjoy your content keep it coming😉

    You certainly DO NOT need the boot oil or mink oil for these. If you want to preserve the color and patina of those, stay away from oils and stick with the "lotion" types. This applies to all oil tanned RW leathers. Bick 4, Lexol, Sapphires and such are more than sufficient for your use. The boots are plenty oily and require minimal maintenance. My IRs are nearly 14 years old and they look beautiful with occasional maintenance using the aforementioned products.

    • @DevonReviewer
      @DevonReviewer  2 роки тому +5

      Thanks, Bick 4 is repeatedly recommended so I really must try it out! I tend to like to let my boots run a little dry to allow the patina to show so it will be a while before these are treated

    • @Freedom89984
      @Freedom89984 2 роки тому

      Very true. The leather soaked in oil will become almost black and saturated. Just a quick cleaning ones or twice a year with some Fiebing’s saddle soap is enough. If you really want to put some stuff on your Rangers, use a very small amount of Bick 4 or Red Wing leather cream. They both have neatsfoot oil in it, preservative and not darkening too much.

    For info the cap toes have a second layer of leather. The original reason for this was that miners spent a lot of time on their knees so the toe cap of the boots would wear out first. On single layer boots this would mean the uppers were damaged and not easily repairable whereas with two layers, if the top layer is damaged it can be replaced without affecting integrity of the boot beneath.

  • @DenimDarlin

    I went true to size on Blacksmiths as well. I tried on 1/2 size down in the shop but they felt too narrow. I’ve since ended up with a pair of Iron Rangers a full size down in a EE width that seem to fit perfectly.

    Love my Iron Rangers. I have the Amber Harness and Black versions. Both gorgeous as expected. Interesting to see some people say they are narrow. The red wing device at the store measured me as an E and EE on my feet yet, the 9D is perfect. If anything, I would say be mindful of the length. I opted for 1/2 of a size down, but honestly, I would have gone a full size. IR’s seem to run long.

    The 270 degree welt as opposed to 360 degree is mainly aesthetics and does make the heel look a bit neater, though I don't think that is particularly relevant with IRs or most heritage RW boots which tend to have a rugged build and looks. In theory there could be a minor difference in water resistance but not something you're likely to notice. Footwear with a Storm welt which are designed to be more water resistant tend to have 360 degree welts whereas 270 degree welts tend to be used more on dressier or more urban footwear.

    I thought my brain had broken as I was sure you already had a pair of Iron Rangers. For me I somehow skipped over this "stage" of boot ownership - I've become a pretty firm devotee of White's Boots over the past several years - but Iron Rangers are really both a timeless design and a really well-built boot. Those will look absolutely stunning once broken in and the patina has started to come in. You've almost sold me on getting a pair myself (though I don't think I'd be able to turn down that Hawthorne Muleskinner leather...).

    I don't have any definitive sizing advice since everyones feet are so unique but for my personal, I wear a size 13 (sometimes 12.5 if available) sneaker and I almost exclusively wear New Balance sneakers. I took a size 11 EE and probably could have took a 10.5 EE as well cause the toebox is super roomy. I would highly recommend visiting a store to try on sizes if able. I'm lucky enough to live in range of a Red Wing store and tried on about a half dozen boots before I found the right fit for me

    270 welt has heel nailed down. Apparently main thinking about it is so the shoe can be more slick around the heel. Maybe useful for miners, not really shure. I can imagine bit more welt on the heel caching on around the mine wile they moved in a squatting position

  • @patrickmiao1698
    @patrickmiao1698 8 місяців тому

    I recently brought a pair of Iron Rangers, I was surprised how well the boot fits compared to the 875 moc toe which was a little too narrow around the toes. My only complaint is the shaft which is a little too roomy, it isn't profiled sufficiently in the back of the boot, the shaft goes straight up instead of gently curving forward like other boots. But overall I like the boot.

      Was exactly the same for me with any RW in the 8 last, which was easier to break and did not cause any pain (Blacksmith/Iron Ranger). My first pair of 875 MocToe on the 20 last was HORRIBLE and it took really a lot of pain until I was able to wear them for longer time. Now, this might have been an error on my side, as I have bought a second pair of 875 after seven years and realized I sized down half a size. These have made no problems or pain whatsoever.

    I bought my pair of 8111 back in 2017 and they’re about to give up the ghost due to the leather splitting, I’d have wanted longer but this was more down to giving them a hard time than lack of care.
    Make sure you check your new pair with a fine tooth comb as I’ve had major issues with Red Wing when trying to buy a new pair. So far I’ve had 4 different pairs of boots from Red Wing London and each of them were showing signs of being factory seconds yet being sold at full RRP, this makes me think the QC on Red Wing has dropped to make them competitive in todays market. In the end I’ve given up on Red Wing and looking to higher budget boots which (hopefully) will have better quality.

    • @DevonReviewer
      @DevonReviewer  2 роки тому

      I havent noticed any QC issues with RW in the 8 or so years I have been wearing them. These had a slight blemish in the leather but I had heard tit was normal to spot some of the character of the original hide

    • @JokerKnightmare
      @JokerKnightmare 2 роки тому

      @@DevonReviewer Light blemishes in the leather is to be expected and like you said it gives character from the animal.
      I can say older boots don’t seem to show QC issues like you said but the boots I tried in February this year were nothing short of disappointments.
      The issues I’ve seen have included very wonky stitching (even jumping off seam edges), toe caps being nearly 1cm different lengths, slashes in the leather, badly matched panel colour (very noticeable on CRT leather).
      I’ve given up and going to try my luck with Vibergs the next time I find myself in Rivet & Hide, nearly double the price of Red Wings but hopefully will be better quality.

    • @JokerKnightmare
      @JokerKnightmare 2 роки тому

      @Dixie Normus I’m not a fan of the 430 either, I got lucky with my boots being the old nitrile sole which has lasted really well all things considered.
      I didn’t notice anything dodgy sanding, only the issues above such as pi$$ poor stitching, badly matched panels, inconsistencies between toe caps (makes the left & right look completely different sizes etc).
      If you can get a good pair of Red Wings then you’ve got a bargain, but the good ones seem to be getting harder to come by and the Red Wing employees I’ve dealt with don’t even try to argue about it, you point it out to them and they acknowledge the issue instantly without even trying to palm it off as ‘character of a handmade boot’.

I bought a full size down, I got measured and have size 11 feet and they are very wide plus I have high arches and my RW iron ranger were a bitch to break in, so painful I wish I got another half size down but the width is good. They did rub here and there which is all part of the break in plus I wish I wore pure cotton thick socks. They are getting better to wear and I've nearly had them a year. I added a thin cork insole and 3 quarter birkenstock arch supports and they are way better. Give them plenty of cream to get them supple. But I love them even though I hated them in the beginning. I blind bought them after lots of research but I would try them on if you can but even doing that is hard to tell if they fit because the lovely thick leather moulds to you.

    Sizing, half down from Brannock and for Moc Toe true to size.
    Why are Iron Rangers so popular?
    They are fairly inexpensive, they are easy to wear, they are not heavy the are enough good build(build to last).
    They are like leather sandals (nice leather feel under the foot) but with extra protection from rain, accidently bumps, light cold etc...
    You can hike with them, work wearing them, ride motorcycle...almost everything.
    They give you a feeling living in times gone bye, 100 years ago or even 2000 years ago stomping around like centurion in leather sandals.
    Negative is only they are NOT for cold days, because they lack 5 mm extra leather midsole.
    So walking in them in winter times, doesn't work because your feet are not insulated from asphalt.
    Moc Toe's are a lot better in that sence, even with same leather(ox blood in my case).

      Not sure whether the relative cost of RWs has changed over the decades, they did start off as a legit work boot brand as far as I am aware so guess they priced accordingly way back when?

    Hello Devon, greetings from America. With all due respect, I own a pair of Red Wing Blacksmith boots. I paid $300 for them, more than any other boots that I own. I know people make a big fuss about heritage boots ( I also own a pair of Wolverine 1000 Mile boots ). The high quality construction and materials is definitely present. Honestly though, I rarely wear my heritage boots. My other modern, cushioned midsole footwear ( especially from KEEN ) are what feet and long walks prefer. I walk four miles round trip to work, five days a week. I have plenty of opportunities to use my footwear. I highly suggest you try a pair of KEEN walking boots and see if any of your heritage footwear can compete for comfort in the real world. Best regards and looking forward to your response.

      Hi Steven, I must add that once you've owned a pair of Pacific Northwest boots , you're bound to have a paradigm shift. I own a number of redwings ( which are great BTW) , Wolverine boots even Allen Indy boots but nothing came remotely close to my experience with my first pair of Nick's boots. I'm hooked and probably buy a pair of boots from every PNW boot brand there is and I know for a fact that I'll never regret it. As far as Keen boots go, I think they're garbage + they're made with man made materials and won't last a fraction of the time a pair of iron rangers would. You should see Rose anvil cut a pair of keens to believe the amount of garbage in them. Go ahead a get yourself a pair of Nick's or White's or Jk , Wesco boots and you'll never ever regret it.

      @@kartikchary I buy lightweight, comfortable, and affordable footwear. Although I have never worn PNW boots, I imagine the weight of them would make me feel like I was wearing cinder blocks. I do not intend on resoling or rebuilding my footwear. I chose KEEN as the most comfortable footwear money can. They are definitely good and superior to all heritage boots for walking. To each his own. Best regards.

      Interesting point, there are definitely more comfortable boots, the Sawmills are a good mix or heritage and comfort, the vibram sole really helps.. I do want to try some boots of more modern construction for serious outdoors / walking etc

      @@DevonReviewer Thank you for your reply, Devon. KEENs are available in the UK. They are an anatomically correct design that is truly much more comfortable than other companies offerings. Watch some reviews online. The Ridge Flex is a great choice. Best regards.

      @@DevonReviewer I bought a pair of Sawmills.... disaster! Too tight. Blisters on heel and crushed toes. Took the recommendation to buy a size down when buying Red Wings and it turns out they are the boots that they recommend staying true to your size. Going on the bay shortly! Great channel this.
