There was support in the army for Washington to undermine the Congress and become a more authoritarian figure, he was the one with the soldiers after all. He refused. George III called him "the greatest character of the age" for it. Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Revolutionary General who did the exact opposite, remarked during one of his exiles "They wanted me to be another Washington." The question remains though, what if his character had been more like Napoleon?
