Indeed. It really shows how jarring racism is and was in America at the time. Blacks were beneath everyone in societal status no matter what they owned, even above the Spanish and Native Americans the Colonialists used to kill.
Achilles' Perspective: Achilles's story is great because his perspective is extremely realistic and relatable and logical. He feels so defeated and beaten down after not only losing his family but watching the genocide of the entire Assassin Order and watched them all be completely eradicated and wiped out by Shay and the rest of the Templars throughout the entire Colonies. He watched and witnessed as the Templars destroyed everything the Assassins had. It makes so much sense that he has lost his belief in the Assassins because he now sees it as an unwinnable fight. The Templars are so strong and powerful and have overwhelming numbers and resources that there is just no possible way to beat them. This perfectly explains why he is so pessimistic and against Connor becoming an Assassin. He discourages Connor from fighting against them and encourages him to just submit because it's logically the safer and more peaceful option. He now believes that it is better to just stop the constant fighting and killing, and just submit to the Templars because the conflict is just a pointless waste of life. He now believes personal survival and preservation of life is more important than fighting for the freedom of humanity, which very much shows how Achilles has given in and submitted to the Templars. He also sees and understands how the Templar vs Assassin conflict is neverending because new Templars and new Assassins are always being born and no matter how many Templars the Assassins kill and vice versa, there is no possible way to defeat them completely. The series has pointed out so many times that you can kill all the people in the world but you can't kill an idea and you can't prevent future generations of people from coming to believing it. This all ties in perfectly to Connor's speech about comprise and how the Assassins and Templars fighting eachother all the time is pointless and redundant because logically there's no end to it, and the best and smartest thing to do is to comprise with eachother and learn to tolerate eachother's differences and find a way to make peace and live together without fighting. This is literally the ENTIRE point and and explains the purpose of why Politics and Governments exist in real life and it all ties in perfectly with the setting of the newly founded America creating it's new government and political system. ACIII may not have been the best game, but it definatley had some of the best Characters and philosophic questions. Achillis, Haytham, & Connor. Haytham's debates with Connor, when Lee Is stabbed by Connor, the two epilouge missions where Connor visits his old village and when he is on the pier in New York seeing the crowd boo the british while the slave auction begins nearby.
Amerikkka's Most Wanted Actually the ending was perfect. The ending was perfectly tragic and I wouldn't have it any other way. Unfortunately a story like this doesn't have a happy ending and we have hindsight to thank for that. From the very beginning of the game I knew Conner wasn't going to be able to save his people because history prevents him from doing so.
"There is so much opportunity here!" "Only for few my boy...only for few..." "Better to be thought a Spaniard than Native, both are better still than I..."
I mean, not exactly. Haytham stayed loyal to the ideals of the Order all his life yes, but from his actions it's clear that his family was important to him. He went against Reginald Birch (The British Templar Grand Master and his supposed mentor) when he learned that it was Birch who had his father killed and sold his sister into slavery. He killed a senior member of the Order for family. Then with Connor - despite being on opposing sides - he tried to work with him, convince him of the potential good of the Order. Killing him would have been quicker and even rid the Templars of a major threat, but he couldn't. It was Haytham who saved Connor at his execution when the Assassins couldn't quite get to him, despite this putting Charles Lee at risk and allowing Connor to stop Hickey from killing Washington - the Templars' big plot. Even in that final fight at Fort George, it seems certain that Haytham let Connor kill him, by deliberately removing his hand away from Connor's Hidden Blade and goading him. He could have killed his son, ended the destruction of the Order in America and achieved the Templars' plans - but he couldn't kill his own child. Haytham was never the best father - with his upbringing in the Order it's no surprise he wasn't exactly warm and supportive - but he still cared about his son (and the rest of his family); it was his major undoing in fact. He still may have died a Templar but it can't be said he was a coward or that he sacrificed family.
Achilles was one of the best mentors in video game history and one of the best characters of all time. R.I.P. Achilles Davenport, assassin, mentor, and hero.
Zyzor apparently he was pretty bad. his greatest accomplishment was actually training Connor. But he was actually a lazy mentor. He used to use gangs on the street to do his work. AC rouge story says it all and it's Achilles in his younger days and u can see his errors. However towards the end and at the end of ac3. He was finially truly good and accomplished a good goal
Yes. By helping found a nation that would choke the potential from it's allies. By founding a nation that served to make the British empire look like a honourable one in comparison. Britain at least gave it's foes the chance to resist. The US lied, cheated and Extorted it's way to the top. So much so that my homeland is it's slave. And just when I though the States couldn't drag Britain through any more filth they use British soldiers to do their dirty work then take the credit for themselves Achilles was albeit indirectly responsible for the Brotherhoods greatest mistake both before and after Shay betrayed them.
Actually he almost destroyed the world in Rogue events. training Connor was his best accomplishment. The Assassins he had in Rogue were terrorizing people in the cities
a black mentor and a native american as the main protagonist, this is diversity in video games done right. Not like now, with movies and games shoving it down our throats.
Let's all face it, Connor represents the basis of what laid underneath our youth: We all had dreams and goals but reality often changes the course of these aspirations for the world is different and unique in mind, soul, vision, and power. None of us ever has NOT made a mistake in our lives. Some of us have chosen to give up like Achilles and wallow away, Some of us have chosen to change paths like Shay and accept the choices we have made, Some of us have accepted reality like Haytham and work in it however we can because life isn't easy, Some of us have seen fame and Glory like Adewale and lost countless friends to it but continue on to the end, Some of us have been Edward and realized that our ambitions can hurt us and changed before it was too late. Those who are like Connor are many because we too have lost friends who we thought were our friends. We have lost family like our mothers and the pain is still there. We have hoped to reconcile and change our parents who are like Haytham. Connor does represent our generation because not one of us has ever been truly right or wrong. We just make it up as we go. Any plans we have never go according to plan, but we have hope and faith that it does. Act as you wish, but remember that you are human and no less nor more fallible than the next person. Connor is well written because he relates to our younger selves.
I wish we got more familial Connor and Achilles scenes. It seems like they're fighting in almost every scene they have together, and we get to see very little of the father-son bond they apparently shared.
achillis giving connor the hidden blades cutscene my favorite part of ac3. still my favorite assassins creed plus I still play a ps3 so works out nicely.
Chaos Afterlife Well he got betrayed and they wouldn't listen. I would rebel too if they killed thosusands of innocents and shrugged it off like it was no big deal.
Shay was a good guy. He only turned to the Templars because the Assassins were allowing their bad to overshadow their good. While the Templars were adhering to the better parts of their philosophy and ideology. Shay chose correctly for his situation. And in fact, his choice ended up with Connor and (presumably) a better brotherhood.
When I first saw Achilles in AC 3 I was taken in by his story and how it seemed that he was a soldier who fought hard but lost everything I actually felt sad when he died. Then when I go through the events of AC Rogue I realize that his actions where what caused all of this. If he had listened to Shay instead of automatically assuming that he is a traitor then all this would have been avoided. I think in AC 3 he realizes this and tries to teach Connor not to do the same mistakes but at the same time using Connor to get revenge on the Templars for him not even caring about their good intentions the Templars actually had. When he died he took comfort in the fact that his last student had been the one to avenge the Assassins and would eventually found the new American Assassins chapter.
John Eapen to be honest I fell less bad for Achille now, sure I still feel bad a bit but he was a bad leader for the Assassins back then and Connor was his only greatest achievement, he failed Shay just like the Jedi Order failed Annakin
TheMegaUzumaki They wanted to stop the war which was innocent claiming lives. Sure Charles Lee was mostly racist and crazy, Thomas Hickey was a mercenary who only wanted money, booze and women and most of the colonial and American templars owned slaves and did terrible things but... People like Haytham Kenway, William Johnson, George Munroe, John Pitcairn and Shay Cormac were good decent people compared to the rest. They genuinely wanted to do some good for the people. Go see their entries on AC wiki and their death confessions as well as videos about them and you will see.
"Good intentions" is stretching it a bit. The Templars spoke with velvety tongues and sharp wit but at the end of the day, they all want to strip humanity of what makes them... well, human. William Johnson talked about protecting the Natives before threatening to kill them for not selling their land. John Pitcairn started a war while claiming he was about to make peace with the Patriots at Bunker Hill, and Haytham's ultimate goal was to turn America into a glorified concentration camp. Oh, and let's not forget Shay himself, who claimed to not harm anymore innocents after the Lisbon earthquake, but then kickstarted the French Revolution which indirectly makes him responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocents.

Jose Lemus and by the end of the game in conner epilogue he realises as ezio did near his end that any man could come for him at any moment and he may not have the advantage for surprise to bail help him kill his target at the end of the day he is a single man trying to also killed a single man not an army fighting in war although he did cheat death many times it was ultimately time that mercilessly tooks his life after he done the same to so many others in name of liberty which in an ironic sense led to him inadvertently betraying his own people

That's why he told connor to not be rash because he knows he will end up like him if he does even though rouge was not yet planned nor released yet when ac3 came out they really made both stories intertwine and it really makes you understand where the words of wisdom Achilles gives connor come from because he sees himself in connor and he also sees a potential in him and that's why in ac3 he said to connor that even if his words were harsh there is still truth in them

Connor and Shay are both similar in certain ways…. They do what is right to save people and don’t blindly follow their own creeds.. Shay stopped Haytham and told him to have mercy, Connor didn’t just want to kill the templars cuz he’s an “assassin” but because they became monsters throughout the years and were not like they were during the 7 years war
Crazy how different he is in rogue and ac3. And how Shay destroyed the brotherhood and then how Achilles single-handedly destroyed the templars using Haytham’s son
One detail that I appreciated in this game is that in Achilles' basement where the Templar Order was shown, Shay wasn't there which implies that he truly regretted his actions years ago and to atone from it, he didn't include his former comrade in Connor's hitlist.
I mean, the reason is likely that shay exclusively works outside of the colonies so wouldn't make much sense to keep him on the wall when he will never come across him.
Not only did Conner bring hope and redemption to Achillies he also brought joy and fun. He was probably content to die a regretful lonely old man with all his regrets, but conner and the homesteaders brought him new life he was able to have before he passed and could probably pass in peace.
8:54 even though Ubisoft didn't have the balls to show slave trade was happening , they had some compassion to include those lines. The amount of Achilles's pain in those lines.
@Sai Ram I wish they would have done a bit more but at least at the very end of the game, we get to see the irony of the colonists celebrating their freedom while slaves are literally being auctioned on the pier in New York behind them.
Oh no. You missed Connor's monologue at Achilles's grave: Conner: I never properly said goodbye to you. I was not ready. So here I am. The weight of my responsibilities never seems to diminish. There is always something else that needs fighting for. This is something you never warned me of, maybe because you thought I would have been deterred - you would have been wrong but I know you we not accustomed to that. Life carries on here. The people seem happy - they are certainly safe, at least for now. One of my brotherhood asked me something I have been struggling with, what happens if - when- we win? When we stop the Templars? It is a question I certainly do not know the answer to, perhaps you did not either. I miss you. As I miss my mother. I hope all is well with you, whever you are. Goodbye, Old man, until it comes time for me to join hou - then I will bother you once again.
@David Beer I didn't include it because it was Connor talking about Achilles, instead of Achilles himself but you are right, that would have been a good ending to the video.
Achillies saw Shay in Connor. Both men had raw talent and eager to do the work. But his failure with Shay taught him a lesson and transformed Connor into the greatest Assasin in the USA. Achillies is basically the Yoda of the Story. Liam is the Obi-Wan who died trying to stop his friend, Aveline is Princess Leia, Edward is Han, Adewale is Mace, Shay is Anakin and Connor is Luke. Yoda failed Anakin, and through him, he paid the price of his arrogance and blindness, now he has a chance anew. A chance in the form of Connor, the young boy filled with hopes and a goal to accomplish.
Achilles didnt fail with Shay, he failed Shay, he sent him to meddle with power he didnt understand and inadvertently caused Shay to slaughter hundreds, then instead of listening to him, hr shrugged it off and put the blame onto Shay, only realising the error of his ways when he himself went to another precursor site
"Better to be thought a Spaniard than a native. And both are better still than I." "That is not true." "What's true and what is, aren't always the same." Oh, how I hurt... :(
You could argue that Shay actually saved the brotherhood because Achilles corrupted it and Shay joined the Templars to correct his mistakes and he was never truly a Templar in mindset since he convinced Haytham to spare Achilles and didn't pursue Connor, and it was only because of Shay's actions that Achilles realized his mistakes.
@@laughingbob5786 you misunderstand why this game doesnt get the same amount of praise as each individual game in the Ezio trilogy, it isnt because it wasnt "Ezio 4" its because Connor never evolved as a character, he stayed the same naive boy he started as throughout the whole game, the only time we really see him overcome that and develop as a character is in the cut ending speech, which was cut from the game..
You know when he says you should talk to him and then you go in his house on the rainy night, immediately turn around and leave and you'll be invisible
It's amazing. In Rogue he was younger and still an assassin. But then after Shay broke his leg, he ended up giving up on them and became the old man we see here in 3
I wonder why Achilles did agree on training (and practically adopting) Ratonhaketon, and gave him his late son's name. Did he take Connor since he was the son of Haytham, the Grand Master and the one who crippled him? Or did he do so because he believed in Connor, that Connor will bring the Brotherhood back and pick up where he had failed.
Maybe he saw Potential which Shay comac don’t have (Assassin Traitor from AC Rogue) And also he saw him similarities of Shay but pure and moral so I guess ge decided to train him as Assassin Achilles was trained by Mayan Assassin Ah Tabai you know Adéwale’s mentor so no racial discrimination for me

I love Connor's naivete when he was young. Really immersive on how a young native would react to European settlements. Also I found how nearly Everytime he goes to the basement he always gawks at the robes. He's a wholesome one.
I also loved how he had no concept of racism when he was young. He was so confused when Achilles said that he couldnt go into those stores.

Indeed. It really shows how jarring racism is and was in America at the time. Blacks were beneath everyone in societal status no matter what they owned, even above the Spanish and Native Americans the Colonialists used to kill.
Achilles was never perfect but u gotta give him credit for how good a character he was in the ac universe
Achilles' Perspective:
Achilles's story is great because his perspective is extremely realistic and relatable and logical. I love all of this so much there is much great writing going on here.

When I played Rogue I hated him but when I played 3 i see him good.
My20GUNS I don't know any good reason for this game not being considered good, except the atrocious ending
Amerikkka's Most Wanted
Actually the ending was perfect. The ending was perfectly tragic and I wouldn't have it any other way. Unfortunately a story like this doesn't have a happy ending and we have hindsight to thank for that. From the very beginning of the game I knew Conner wasn't going to be able to save his people because history prevents him from doing so.
I think he meant for the modern day.

I hate to say it...I really do. Even though Haythem is badass, but Achilles was more of a father to Connor than Haythem was
CrimsonCarl Haytham wasn't a father at all.
Haythem just fucking a girl because he wanted sex and never returned to the village again.

Zyzor apparently he was pretty bad. his greatest accomplishment was actually training Connor. But he was actually a lazy mentor. He used to use gangs on the street to do his work.

@Isaias Valladares

I loved it when Connor refuse to give up into having Achilles train him
He is very convincing. I still don't know why many hates him. I love Connor just like Altair and Ezio.
Go see their entries on AC wiki and their death confessions as well as videos about them and you will see.
well if shay wanted to be taken seriously then hes should bust in achilles room and shouting at him like a 5 year old
"Good intentions" is stretching it a bit.
@@solidparas1925 what would you do if a person you saw as a mentor sent you on a mission that claimed the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands of innocents, then claimed it to be impossible and shrugged it off? Youd be angry aswell

So basically the reason why achellies didn't want to train connor at first was because shay betrayed him and thought connor would do the same
Not exactly. I'm assuming after the purge of the original colonial brotherhood, Achillies was broken mentally.
He wasn't afraid of betrayal; he was just broken from his actions and how it lead the assassin's he was leading to die and he was the only one left
Jose Lemus I think acilles probably felt that the templars were too strong for a single man but maybe he lost faith in the brotherhood considering it had been beaten down as much as it had while under his leadership, maybe he just didn't want to repeat the pasts futile mistakes and get this young naive boy killed for nothing
Jose Lemus I mean if it wasnt a game then it would very possible for conner to have gotten himself killed or hunted down, he was very close to death when he was being hanged if it wasn't for haytham he'd be dead om the rope but if you also take a look at haythams death he didnt want to killed conner he could have stabbed him in the throat like conner did to him but he chose to let conner kill him had this been a fair fight like in acillies words would have ended in tragedy. conner had alot of self confidence when he killed the first two men while achilles always knew it would only take once slip up for conner to meet his end lucky for him he was fighting his dad

Wow crazy how a game can change your view on characters. AC3 you love Achilles like a teacher figure and a sweet old man. AC Rogue really brought some perspective into what kind of person was in his youth.

7:00 Achilles just casually knowing that Haytham is Connors father despite never knowing it before haha
Actually Shay didn’t exist yet in the AC universe, so that’s why he wasn’t up on the wall with the rest of the templars.

Conner: I never properly said goodbye to you. I was not ready. So here I am. The weight of my responsibilities never seems to diminish. There is always something else that needs fighting for. This is something you never warned me of, maybe because you thought I would have been deterred - you would have been wrong but I know you we not accustomed to that. Life carries on here. Achillies saw Shay in Connor. Both men had raw talent and eager to do the work. But his failure with Shay taught him a lesson and transformed Connor into the greatest Assasin in the USA. 23:09 - Connor is such a kid inside. Just like his grandfather Edward.
16:29 : "What have you done" This cracks me up always! 😂
You could of used a tree!
You know when he says you should talk to him and then you go in his house on the rainy night, immediately turn around and leave and you'll be invisible
23:52
You and I are going to New York 😆
Connor in the next scene : *getting punched in a crowd*
I was just thinking "wheres connors native dad?" And for a second forgot about haythem.
28:09 Achilles writes his final words to connor
It's amazing. In Rogue he was younger and still an assassin. But then after Shay broke his leg, he ended up giving up on them and became the old man we see here in 3
Achilles was a bad mentor of the Brotherhood, but he also helped to give it a second chance.
The Empire Stikes Back/Return of the Jedi Yoda segment inspirations are very strong here.... especially the 'I cant kill my father' parts...

Connor: Bitch you could stand up straight this whole time!?!?!

This needs to be a meme.
Maybe he saw Potential which Shay comac don’t have (Assassin Traitor from AC Rogue) And also he saw him similarities of Shay but pure and moral so I guess ge decided to train him as Assassin Achilles was trained by Mayan Assassin Ah Tabai you know Adéwale’s mentor so no racial discrimination for me
23:00 well he changed gears really quickly
27:56 "in your haste to save the world. Make sure you don't destroy it."
@yudhistira sakmeniko
Achilles would know. Have you played AC: Rogue?
@@Sevvina yeah, in AC: Rogue we get the whole meaning of this sentence
16:46 This line has aged too well
Holy crap. Just played through the death of Achilles. I’m destroyed.
So let me to clarify " GET THE HELL OFF MY LAND."
Achilles:but dont think you can just come in throw those on and call yourself an assassin
Connor: Didnt my grandfather did that
A little fun fact or just a theory but a majority of ppl say that connor's robe was actually the (stolen) robes of (duncan walpole) edward and it was modified more to its current look in ac3
5:06 exactly what his grandfather did
In an Alternate Timeline, where Achilles died by the hands of Haytham, Charles Lee was the one who defected the Templar Order much like Shay Cormac did, and restarted the Assassin’s Creed.
23:09 - 23:16 This is what I point to when people call Connor a wooden character
