How to: Access Ford hidden menu, dash self-diagnostics mode (Focus, Mondeo, etc)

- Some Fords - featured is a Mondeo Mk3 - have an instrument cluster self-diagnostics mode, which can give you some basic data readout without the use of an OBD scan tool.
This is the basic list of data (your car may vary):
* Gauge sweep test
* LCD display test
* Cluster bulbs test
* ROM level
* NVM EEPROM level (not an error code)
* DTC revision
* DTC error codes: Will show "none" unless there are codes stored, in which case it will iterate through them. Only cluster codes are shown here, this is not a substitute for a proper ODB2 scan tool to pull general DTC codes.
* Vehicle speed mph
* Vehicle speed km/h
* Averaged speed encoded
* Tachometer (engine RPM)
* Averaged RPM encoded
* Odometer counter
* Fuel level (010 empty to 254 full)
* Averaged fuel level
* Fuel flow rate
* Cylinder head temperature (in degrees C)
* Battery voltage (or more accurately, voltage at the cluster).

Craig I'm trying to find an under carriage splash shield for my 2004 Focus. I could only find one rectangular piece which doesn't cover the entire front end bottom of course. Are there additional parts required?

Great stuff - very useful. But with my pre-facelift mk 3 mondeo (2003), entering diagnostic mode doesn't reset trip meter to zero. I've done it many times (long story short, there is something wrong with the cooling fan system so I have to manually turn it on by turning on A/C when the temperature gets too high).
Also, turning the heater on full blast is 100% effective at drawing heat off the engine .
Useful video, I have a question I had a problem with the EGR valve, I believe that I fixed it, by cleaning a clearing the code with my android phone after that disconnected the battery and the car runs fine. However after draining the water a bit because I disconnected the house once the coolant fun reach the temperature it turn on but won't turn off the temperature should stay just before the middle, but it is going too low I guess, this is not my car it's a friend's car, so I'm not really sure what's happening I think it could be the coolant be too old and most of it now is tap water, as we didn't have any coolant after the job was done, what I told him we can try is to put new coolant and pure water to see if it stop or not, but I'm not sure if it will solve the problem.
did u use a ODB? wich one? works with ur phone? thx
If the fan doesn't turn off it is either because you do not have enough coolant in the system or the thermostat is faulty. I suggest topping the system up before paying out for a thermostat.
My Diesel Mk 3 Mondeo does about 40 mpg (measured) but the car computer says its doing something like 50 mpg ! Is it possible to use this system to set the readout to something nearer the correct figure ?

I have Ford Focus mk2 and when i enter menu it shows me comfort and sport mode..what does sport mode means?
teslicanin B-channel it means speeding tickets. Actually it adjust the way the vehicle responds to the throttle and shifting as well as the suspension on some.
My question is how do you clear the codes from the cluster if you had/have them? Or is it possible to clear them from the dash pressing a button combination? I repaired a 08 grand marquis cluster and it’s fixed but the codes still live there. Just curious.
You'll usually need any cheap OBD tool.

It was an option, if you don't have the correct control stalk then your dash doesn't have the trip computer.
The end of the left hand stalk that sticks out of the steering column and deals with indicating is actually a button and can be pressed in towards the steering wheel and the remaining distance the car can drive with the fuel on board will be shown. Also, it shows outside temperature and average speed. It changes function with every new press inwards on the tip of the stalk.

Yes put it in the bulb test mode and all the cluster lights should be on. You can see the check engine light (EML) in the video. Also, the EML should always come on when the ignition is in position II, then go out a few seconds after the engine is started.
Thanks will try it, my (EML) never comes on when I turn on ignition, so has to be the bulb (or a fuse)
Steve Moore no the dealer pulled the bulb on you lol it the cluster face off and blacked out the yellow tinted or red icon that's what I've seen at least

Your mileage reset button might be on the stalks.
Hi. I have same clocks with same displays, I have changed stalk with info button, but it won't show me l/100km ... When I press info button, it just makes "beep" sound...

I expect you need a different cluster to be compatible with stalk. Have a search on talkford.com for cluster upgrades.

I'm doing exactly this and it has no effect on a Ford Focus 2002. The cluster is dead most of the time, maybe it's preventing the test mode from initiating. Or the actual button might be broken.
I tried this out on my Mondeo and nothing happened because I was turning the key before pushing the button in. As soon as I held the button in FIRST before turning the key it worked exactly as in the video.
Whst about the left stick , what can i access that with?

My clocks stop working after a short time of driving and come back on after car turned off for 5-10 mins no idea what causes it and the clocks have recently been changed an ideas to why it’s doing this
What do you mean the clocks, the cluster displays? The dials? Sounds like a dodgy electrical connection, or a fault on the PCB. Gets hot or vibrates and opens up, cools down and connects again, just a guess.

Craig's DIY Car hi buddy I had clocks out today the Pcb had snapped where some had probably pressed reset button to hard after resoldering it and refitting it all buttons work but the clocks still go off and quicker I’m warm temperatures outside I’m stumped now at why this is happening and not sure what to do next
