    Hey there, I randomly have videos playing on my monitors in my art studio. Iam a full time professional artist and Bookbinder, I have started my own line of goatskin leather watercolor sketchbooks with the choice of artist grade 100% cotton papers... and also a artist grade watercolor line. You can very easily make your own pigment watercolor inks. You can store them in little 1oz dropper bottles .... or water bottle. 1st let me say you should definitely mull the paint with a glass muller and slab. You you mull paint, you aren't grinding the pigments smaller or finer ( unless you use just pigment and very little water ) you are evenly casing each pigment partical with the binder. When you use just a brush like you did, they are incase and mixed into the binder in lager clusters. If you rub a paper towel or even your finger.... or a part of your sleeve brushes it lightly, it's gonna smear or remove the pigment right off the paper. I would seal your work if you are going to just keep using a brush to mix. But anyways, I've made plenty of my own watercolor inks... and Indian inks and other types of inks. Just take the gum arabic binder and add a few drops of glycerin, a few drops of oxgall and water it out with distilled water. If it's to thin.... add drops of gum arabic until it's the thickness you desire. If you want them to flow more like regular ink... and more drops of oxgall. Hope you have a good one 🙂

      This is everything I need and more! Thank you so much. I just learned that I need some sort of oil with the the gum arabic, so I'm definitely going to try the glycerin and oxgail. I appreciate this!

      @@TheKkeys hey there, it's no problem at all 🙂 and if you have any more questions, or are curious... I'd be happy to help. The oil you are referring too, is clove oil. That isn't necessary if you are using distilled water ( which should be used in all of your art activities, Unless it's just water to clean brushes ) and if the gum arabic binder is store bought. Pre-made gum arabic liquids like from Winsor and Newton and pre-made watercolor binders like from Schmincke and Sennelier- already contain Biocides... so the clove oil isn't necessary ( must use distilled water tho ) . The clove oil acts a natural preservative that kills mold, but it is rather weak and that's why people still have to store their own-made binders with clove oil... in the refrigerator. tea tree oil, thyme oil and spike lavender oils are stronger... specially if you added them all together. But what people don't understand is that they are oils.... and oils don't mix with water... WATERcolors lol. So it just kinda sits on top of whatever liquid containing water you put it in.... not mixing in and being incorporated completely into the mix and makes it all a weird looking oil spill sitting on top lol. When I make my binders, inks and watercolor paints, I use Sodium bicarbonate and a enzyme biocide to prevent mold. None of my stuff has to be stored in a refrigerator and none of it gets mold. I buy sodium bicarbonate from Amazon for around 12$ per half pound, it's a food preservative that's literally in 90% of food people eat... so it's not toxic and I can buy it straight from amazon quick and easy, It's a powder that easily dissolves in water. The biocide I also buy from Amazon and its just a mold removal/preventing spray that you would clean your tub or kitchen with... its also non toxic . This I just spray a few squirts in the water iam using to make my watercolors or inks with, use only distilled water, air tight storage, plus the sodium bicarbonate = No mold, no refrigeration needed. The clove oil can be added as an extra extra extra caution.... but its not needed at all. But like I said, if you are using the winsor and newton pre-made gum arabic liquid, it already has biocides in it. So if you use the distilled water to make your inks and watercolors with... mold is not going to happen. Sorry for any typos, iam always in the middle of something and I always try to give as much as I can... while being in the middle of something lol. Anyway, don't be afraid if you have any more questions, or want/need to know anything. Have a good one 🙂

      @@danieljamesbinderystu2968 Thank you again! I'm going to continue to test and experiment. Your comments have definitely given me a great start. I recently purchased indigo and cochineal in Mexico, but I haven't tried mixing it to make actual watercolors just yet.

    If your in the UK London they also have a pigment art supply shop near Tottenham Court Road station, I think if you mix honey or using soap it will make the pigment flow more?

    What are the prices? Or do they depend on the rarity of the pigment?

    I think your work is amazing! Another great video. I do have a question for you and you may have answered this before and I just don't remember, what paper are you using?

      M Spates hey, she adds to this info in the description of the video :) .... but it's Arches ... grainy. I usually use satin but now I also might add coarse to my lost :)

    • @TheKkeys
      @TheKkeys  6 років тому

      Thank you very much for your response! The reason why I asked that question is because on another UA-cam channel they compared archers paper to cheaper papers and the results were shocking! I've been using the cheaper papers and my results were depressing! So much so that I stop painting. But now I'm thinking about trying archers to see if I can get better results!

    • @VioletBicanic
      @VioletBicanic 6 років тому +1

      M Spates heheh what’s also shocking is the number of typos in my first reply lol ... it was very early xD ... but yes, paper does make a difference ... I have a sketchbook for doodling and practicing ... then once I’m satisfied I use Arches or Fabriano paper ... either is lovely

    • @TheKkeys
      @TheKkeys  6 років тому

      There's definitely a difference. The cheaper papers can't take as much water
