The legend has spoken. No off limit areas in the vocabulary of Mr. Hope. He's the source of Robin Williams' inspiration for free speech hollywood monologue style. Serious but deep comedic delivery of a speech that only he could do it. Bob Hope will always be a legend in my book. Nothing but love for this man.
The tepid response to Hope's monologue (including a few boos) is indicative of the times and the days of the Generation Gap. Mayor Yorty. Sinatra's retirement. A declaration not a demonstration.
This was the year when seemingly no one gave a damn. About a third of the winners (including Orson Welles) didn't even bother to show up, the presenters were indifferent, and the crowd barely seemed to be awake most of the time.
Look at the end of the video, the audience on the back seats didn't even clap their hands. What the fuck was wrong with those people? Are they pissed off or was it because the 'new generation' gap?
The jokes were great, but the audience was terrible. I guess the old adage is true: show business people make the worst audience. Nobody like Bob Hope anymore.
@Jeepman89 there’s comedians that’s in the greatest of all time category like Richard Pryor that had people like Paul Mooney writing for him it’s not that uncommon and there nothing wrong with it as along as they’re not outright stealing other comedians jokes, some comedians are just able to make jokes work with their timing and delivery something that the writers of said jokes probably couldn’t do
@Jeepman89 meh I think that’s subjective it’s not the funniest thing ever but I’d definitely watch this over any modern day snl sketch or a Kevin hart comedy special
Billy crystal ripped off a lot of Bob Hope's material in his performances at the Oscar's. It's sad Bob Hope didn't get more appreciation from his peers (Sag) for his work in film and for humanity (uso).

Those were the days; an there is never going to be another one like it!

a declaration is not a demonstration?
Love me some Bob Hope. Legend.
Bob Hope was 68 years old by the time this aired.
He was great. This one was weak. Thanks for the memories. Bob
Tough crowd that year.

Good to see this now…
Boy, this was a tough crowd.
Hardly any applause on his early jokes, why was 1971 such an uptight year???
Vietnam was still going on. Nixon was president. Country was still divided
@@strangebrew1231 Now may be a repeat of that...just change the names...
Until that final shot of the audience, it sounds like Hope was playing to 25 people in a junior-high school gym in Temecula.
Bob was soooo good 👍 😅
Sympathy applause is death to a comedian. Look at Hope squirm...
where's the audience? wow... dead silence. the jokes play well now
No they don't!
The movies were better, the actors were better, heck even the jokes were better 🙂
Good writers made the difference too!
Judging by Hope's material, no!
How to die with class.
Merle Oberon!

This was the year all of us could have been buying a 501 Maico
Bob got a slow beginning here. Almost like America passed him by.
Where is Dean?
Bobby babyyyy 🤡
Sad. I'm old enough to remember most of the people he named. And they are almost all fertilizer now.
The jokes were great, but the audience was terrible. I guess the old adage is true: show business people make the worst audience. Nobody like Bob Hope anymore.
@Jeepman89 hate to break to it to you but so does 89% of comedians old and new

Jokes were flat and dated. Hope was Johnny Carson’s least favorite guest, and it’s easy to see why.
you don't speak for me. ever had a bad day?

Robin Williams
What’s going on the world downstairs could you bring me another small piece of seven Leah Way in a few bb vbvbbbb
Acapulco gold?.... Really? LOL
Haven't seen anyone bomb so badly since Nixon bombed Cambodia.
This is a terrible monologue, Jesus Christ.
writers should have been fired...ugh...
@@hairyscotman he had the same six writers for twenty six years that was the problem
You can tell how out of touch he already is with the audience. Old man. Out of step by then.
