Just for Lucy and the great established actors - this is worth it. Seeing Lucy just before she passed, so sweet. Then again seeing Walter Matthau mess with class - that was great too.
I remember specifically watching this Oscar telecast because I heard Lucille Ball was going to be a presenter, and had heard she had been ill. Lucy had a mild stroke in 1988, and was nervous about this appearance because she was afraid she was still showing the after-effects. I don't see any signs here. Anywoo, I would rather watch Lucy and Bob Hope for fifteen minutes than the "stars of tomorrow."
Bob Hope was probably THE most tired and boring person on the planet at this point. They always had to give the MC position to Bob, even when he became old and decrepit and his jokes were SO stale.
It’s quite fitting that Lucy’s last appearance was with Bob hope. Can’t believe hope is 86 here. He looks 10-15 years younger. Lucy still had that great sense of humor and laugh even though you could tell she wasn’t doing great.

I will always love seeing Bob and Lucy, though. It doesn't get better than those two! They don't make 'em like that anymore... and didn't in '89 either, apparently...

At that time, a new generation that included Brad Pitt, Winona Ryder, Johnny Depp, Leonardo di Caprio were about to take the movie industry and win, at least, some nominations. How the Academy didn't invite any of them to this number?
Depp & Dicaprio started getting more of a real foothold in the industry a few years later actually in the early 90s...Dicaprio was still doing TV guest appearances and commercials I think around the time of this performance.
This was so nice that Lucy had this moment shortly before her death. I know she had stayed out of the public after her failed tv program. This paired with her disappointment of the performance of Mame in the 70’s she had been met with the first major criticism of her career. A Career which embodied the finest in radio, tv and even films. She was and will always be a great American icon. An influential woman in business and entertainment. Lucy your legacy lives on and will endure!
Metro424 interesting how even the famous with such long and storied careers like Lucy has could end on such a sad note. It was only perhaps the last 5 years of a 50 plus year show biz career ( I read how her last sitcom failed miserably) that was considered a failure. But on a hopeful note. A person could be considered a failure for his or her whole life and end on a happy note where the last couple of years before they die are happy years.Never give up on life!!!!!!
So, after this number, did the academy just make note to themselves: never ever under any circumstances nominate any of these people for an academy award?

Firstly, all of my love to the late Lucille Ball. This was a little over two weeks before her untimely passing. She was amazing. Secondly, that performance was absolutely the most 1980s ever. EVER.
Carol Burnett"s daughter Carrie Hamilton is in this route. She must have not been diagnosed with lung cancer yet when this was filmed? She died in the early 90's.
I just looked that up...must have been one of if not the last public appearance she made. 77 is young by today's standards but she smoked like a chimney.
Tracy Nelson (Ricky Nelson's daughter and Mark Harmon's niece) and her dance partner D.A. Pawley did a very nice job, actually. (begin 11:06). The performance written by Marvin Hamlisch deserves a thumbs up, I think, especially as it works to its uplifting finale. (begin 13:05)
I didn't realize Tracy Nelson was in this until reading your comment---at least she had a steady gig for a while playing the nun assistant to Tom Bosley on "Father Dowling Mysteries".
Tracy Nelson played Henry Fonda's daughter and Lucy's stepdaughter/adopted daughter in "Yours, Mine and Ours" in 1968. She was adorable. And Tom Bosley was the doctor in the movie. Lucy and Henry were fabulous in their roles as Helen North Beardsley and Frank Beardsley. I so love Lucy, always have, always will.
Most of these are the children/siblings of already established stars. A lot of them are still acting, but not really huge stars. Some of them might still snag a nomination. Two of them already have emmys.
Yes daughters of Carrie Fisher and Carol Burnett. All went on to have long careers except for D.A Pawley. Look how young Savion was. Chad Lowe is still around and Patrick Dempsey had a great tv career but none were ever going to win oscars.
Interesting to note, none of these actors have even been nominated for an Oscar to date. A couple have won Emmys and People's Choice Awards, but not an Oscar.

They deserved that standing ovation!
Oooh. Jan from the Office comes spinning in there near the end. Nice...
That's Miss Melora Hardin in her only public appearance at the 1989 Oscars.
Lucy had some nice stems for 77.
THE BEST PART WAS LUCY N BOB HOPE JOKING...PRICELESS
I loved Chad Lowe on Life Goes On.
Two of the VERY BEST entertainers, and wonderful human beings. GOD bless you both ... and THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!
Oh my god....who are those people....
With the expection of Tony Award winner Savion Glover who have great success into
television directing such as Girlfriends, One on One, The Game and others at Paramount/Viacom,
but they were 19 former artists were Patrick Dempsey, Corey Parker, Corey Feldman,

Chad Lowe, Matt Lattanzi, Keith Coogan, Page Hannah Adler, Melora Hardin,
Carrie Hamilton, Christian Slater, Blair Underwood, Patrick O'Neal and Holly Robinson Peete
were now directing both of television's most successful music/variety programs:
"The Best Years with Patrick Sebastien" and "Years Later" for Sony Pictures Television
and Ovation TV since Spring/Summer 1998.
@@markelijio6012… what
Lucy’s laugh is so 🥰 makes me smile
I had to watch this scene again after viewing a Lucy documentary on TV last night. It was fascinating, funny and sad and brought me so many great memories and tears. I have always been a Lucy fan from Australia and loved her movie with Desi The Long Long Trailer. These actors are true Legends.
Bob Hope was 8 years older than lucy but looks 10 years younger. Smoking killed her too soon. :(
Her voice tho too
Brittle But if you point that out, somebody will quickly reply, "My aunt Martha smoked 4 packs of Luckies a day and lived to 98." The Aunt Martha Theory.
@Nunovia Gottdamnedbizzness The blood of your mother keeps you going.
Moron. Lol
She was 77, lived over the average lifespan for women at that time.
I legit laughed watching Bob and Lucille. Funny is funny no matter its age. And they were some of the best
Lucy is a legend she was very much loved
I've been to funerals that were less painful than watching this.
Wow, Lucy still looks glamorous, even close to her passing.
Z-really like Lucy's laugh, genuine...
Firstly, all of my love to the late Lucille Ball. This was a little over two weeks before her untimely passing. She was amazing.
Secondly, that performance was absolutely the most 1980s ever. EVER.
I was only 60 when this came on!!! Seems like yesterday!!!
Golly you’re up there now aren’t ya!!
Lucille Ball died less than 4 weeks after filming this Oscars, sad to think that!
Carol Burnett"s daughter Carrie Hamilton is in this route. She must have not been diagnosed with lung cancer yet when this was filmed? She died in the early 90's.
Because of this performance?...
It's amazing how people will stand and up and give you ovations when they sense you are on your last legs and are no longer a threat.
I just looked that up...must have been one of if not the last public appearance she made. 77 is young by today's standards but she smoked like a chimney.
George Hirst Carrie Hamilton died in 2002.
This is a terrific moment with two living living Legends of Television and Film. Bob Hope was pretty cutting. Love it. LOL. Thank-You for sharing.
Other than Lucy's last appearance and Bob Hope being 86 and looking 66 FTW, KILL ME.
I love them both dearly. I watched them since I was a kid. Hey Lucy!!! You have my heart ❤️ always.
So Sad, we lost her that year..
There’s still hope for about 3 of those names.
Rest In Peace Walter Matthau.
Miss them all . Classical music and movies r the best .
The king and the Queen of Comedy legends never see anything like the both of them again
These are the last sessions for both of them.
Anybody think that Walter Matthau slipped that middle finger up at somebody on the sly???
Most of these are the children/siblings of already established stars. A lot of them are still acting, but not really huge stars. Some of them might still snag a nomination. Two of them already have emmys.
4 have Emmys. Ricki Lake, Patrick Dempsey, Chad Lowe and Blair Underwood.
Savion Glover is a Tony winning choreographer and director; he’s considered one of the best tap dancers in the world
Yes daughters of Carrie Fisher and Carol Burnett. All went on to have long careers except for D.A Pawley. Look how young Savion was. Chad Lowe is still around and Patrick Dempsey had a great tv career but none were ever going to win oscars.
Joely Fisher is not Carrie Fisher daughter, she is Eddie Fisher and Connie Stevens daughter.
Yes Peter u r correct. Carrie Fisher wasn’t there and she is the daughter of Debbie Reynolds and she was the half sister of Joely and Tricia.
Chad Lowe still works. Savion Glover did well on Broadway.
Directing television stuff. Doing dancing stuff on Broadway. Yes!
Possibly the worst production number in the history of the Oscars, except for the opening number of the same telecast featuring "Snow White".
That Snow White was really the worst but this comes in a close second lol
This is one of the eras that when a comedian laughed, it didn't sound OR look like a fake laugh (i.e. Jimmy Fallon).
Right? I don't know who's worse,Jimmy Fallon or Jerry Seinfeld.
🙌 Yesss
Bob Hope was 86 and Lucille Ball was 78 in this video. UNBELIEVABLE 😳
Lucy was 77
At least Chad Lowe was married to an Oscar winner eventually.
Jon H. Until she divorced him. 😀😝
😂😂😂😂
If only she remembered to thank him.
@@deckard97 she supposed to play Captain Marvel by the way
😂😂
Interesting to note, none of these actors have even been nominated for an Oscar to date. A couple have won Emmys and People's Choice Awards, but not an Oscar.
Savion Glover won a Tony and is often named as one of the greatest tap dancers.
Mark Brown Christian Slater won an Oscar in 2016. But most have been more successful on television.
@@cgaskill13 he never won an Oscar
@@cgaskill13 What? You got to be kidding with us!!!
@@cgaskill13 Ray Stark says in 1981, "you have to work hard with such

but not boring nor scary. From 1957
to 2000, his company was Rastar.

How I miss Bob hope and Lucy
