    Mid-Fifties American designers LOVED Tropical colors: Formica counters and table tops; colorful Fiestaware tableware. The green palate takes us back to that era, showing a bit of extra flair and self-confidence.

      my parents took a trip to NYC in 1957 and brought back 2 scale model Continentals for my brother and me. at the time, AMT (Aluminum Model Toys) out of Detroit made 1/25 scale models of most US cars in a kit as well as pre made versions with flywheel motors which sold for 1.98. today they might be worth much more.

    My grandpa had a friend who owned a white Mark II. I got to ride in it once as a kid. That car stuck out like a sore thumb in a good way compared to the other fifties cars at the shows. As huge as it was, it looked smaller compared to the other mid to late fifties cars.

    Friend of mine had one that was sky blue. Absolute pleasure to drive, and like someone else mentioned, years ahead of its time. And not mentioned in the video is that the speedometer maxes out at 140 mph. I personally don't know if it would hit that, but it sure felt like it was capable of getting close just the way it accelerated and drove.

    The first time I saw one of these was in '71 when I was finishing my paper rout riding by the New Hope Automobile Show in Bucks County, Pa. and watching the show set up for the weekend. Even then at eleven, I appreciated the elegance in simplicity that the design evoked and I realized........ everything didn't need to be lavisciously ornamented in chrome to be the Motts.

    I can't add any more accolades that these Gorgeous cars deserve...so, my comment is about the editing of the video, which, was done superbly with that piece of music while driving the Black Beauty, (what was that muzic), but, more importantly, the music was played at a level that I could/did hear the dialogue between the two gentlemen. (far too often with so many other people's videos, the background music becomes loud noise prohibiting the discenable listening of the voices)...So, Kudos! to ALL!

      I personally liked a couple of the design prototypes better (there's a video somewhere showing them). I'm guessing that the Big Shots at Ford ruled them out from production, because they thought that they looked too European for the American market or maybe too little Lincolnish

    The best thing and I noticed right off was how QUIET these cars were.
    That's what I remember most about big American cars in 60's-70's. You couldn't really hear them until you touched the accelerator, and MAN! did they pick up and GO!
    I like the black one best.
    I've imagined taking one in dark blue across Corson st. in Pasadena at 75-80 mph full on inertia, catching all the green lights at 4am with Duke Ellington's "The Red Garter" playing.

    It's true that there are many of these around, and the really good ones are over $100K, and most don't have AC. You can tell from the outside because the air intake is on the leading edge of the rear fender bump, outside the rear side window. The unit is in the trunk but unlike other cars with that system there are no clear plastic tubes from the shelf to the roof, but the air is channeled through the C pillars. Most have problems if you look close at the dashboard and controls etc. These are perfect and would have to sell for several hundred thousand dollars.

    • @hornetbrown
      @hornetbrown 5 років тому +1

      True. These are not mere $100K cars. I would even venture near $400-500K considering their Ford family pedigrees.

    It seems strange that none of these 3 cars are still owned by the Ford Family. Because FoMoCo lost $1000 per car built, the entire production run ended up as a $3 Million dollar loss (close to $30 Million in 2019 terms). There was a marketing study done during the development phase which likely concluded that profitability was doubtful, but putting this car into production was more a pet project of William Clay Ford to elevate Ford's luxury cars in the public's perception. In the 1956 model year, the standard Lincoln sold well and is considered the best looking Lincoln of the 1950s. But the 1957 facelift was garish and sales declined. Then the bizarre 1958 Lincoln was introduced at the same time as the 1958 economic recession. Thus, this car really failed at the time in elevating Lincoln's status relative to Cadillac because the styling of the post 1956 Lincolns went down until 1961. Initially this car was supposed to be built for at least 4 model years with the addition of a convertible and 4-Door Sedan, but sales dropped significantly for the 1957 model year and FoMoCo cancelled the entire project.

    To me it seems like it's designed was inspired by crossing a Thunderbird with a full-size Ford two door sedan. It's low and wide like a t-bird but it's got a back seat and is much wider. It's almost like a less sporty and more classy 3:2 scale upsized t-bird.

    • @toddknox685
      @toddknox685 4 роки тому

      As Robert Lacy's book about the Fords relates, William Clay was greatly miffed that the '56 Thunderbird under development was going to look so much like his beloved Continental and accused the designers of copying his plans. And he was really miffed when McNamara canceled the whole Continental Division. Everyone remembers the Edsel fiasco, but fails to remember the Continental was only around two years. The Edsel actually sold more than the Continental. What saves the Continental is that it was beautiful, the Edsel not so much. Anyway, both were monetary failures but Edsel gets all the blame.
