I am looking to accomplish what I failed to with snowshoes from dead horse gap next year in the winter, looks like I am in for a surprise when I finally get up there.... looks freaking beautiful, "Our land abounds in nature's gifts, of beauty rich and rare."
I can imagine how insane it would have been there in gale force winds! Even lower down in less exposed spots I've seen poles break on the Main Range. All the best
G’day. I’ve written a whole article about the gear we used. There is a section on the sleeping system we used. Check it out at: markoates.exposure.co/aawt-winter-gear
Yes. There are still drifts of snow up there at present and over the Christmas period. Recently there have also been some brief snowfalls on the higher peaks although these usually melt within a day or two.
Nothing too special - Julbo Nomad glacier glasses as they fit my face well. Mine are the category 4 version (dark tint designed for snow). Unfortunately I don’t think they make them anymore. Always open to good suggestions for snow glasses that aren’t ridiculously priced...
baatarjav javkhlan Unfortunately not that cold as our highest peak is only 2228 metres. Guessing that it generally gets down to around -7 degrees Celsius overnight in winter although sometimes colder. However, the area is notorious for high winds and wet blizzard conditions so it often feels much colder than peaks twice the height.
We dug the hole to initially store our skis safely as there were massive drop offs/slopes either side of our camp and it would have been very easy to lose a ski over the edge. :)
An amazing video and some truley spectacular scenery

Amazing stuff.I have camped up near the Sentinel in terrible weather. My tent poles were broken by gale force winds. It was not fun.:-0

Coldest temperature recorded is -23C. Mid winter in the main range, often after a storm clears it will be between -10C to -15C
Can I ask why you dug the hole at 3:25?
