Finally some history. WW1 gives so much context to everything that has happened since. The Rise of communism, Rise of America, mad Germans and financially ruined Europe, all resulted from this conflict. I bet Destiny in a week will ask, why haven't I learned about this before

    • @Greatkingrat88
      @Greatkingrat88 2 місяці тому +1

Yeah, and there's stuff going in a straight line before it. Like, the reason France wanted revenge on Germany was because they lost Alsace-Lorraine in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, which was still fresh in their memories. The reason the Versailles treaty is so harsh is because of this- and the reason the Franco-Prussian war was so harsh on France was because Napoleon utterly crushed Prussia in 1806 and forced a humiliating treaty on them. History goes far back and is all about context.

I would say a broad overview of European history is helpful, since he doesn't even have that. He thinks Napoleon was a 13th century figure. Spending an hour or two just getting the very very basics of what happened since the inception of the HRE up until the Napoleonic Wars.

rundown since I know a lot about this is
Prussia and Austria are competing for influence over German states for years
One day, Denmark decides to integrate Schleswig Holstein
Austria and Prussia are pissed since Denmark agreed not too before, and also it is part of the German confederation
They invade Denmakr and split the region
Bismark decides to tell Austria "Hey, fuck you, fuck the agreement, we want all of shleswig holstein"
Austria gets pissed, and it escelates into war, which was the goal
Prussia justifies that since Austria has ties to North German states, they woukd be fine to invade all of them, so they do.
After war, Prussia demands Austria recognize Prussias ownership over these now conquered north German states, and in return lose 0 land themselves except their land in Schleswig Holstein (This is so they have more flexibility diplomatically in the future)
Prussia is renamed the "North German Confederation"
After a while, North Germany/ Prussia gets a guy named Leopold, who ahs tied to the Holenzollen family (Basically, royal family of Germany/Prussia) in charge of Spain
France gets concerned since Spain borders them, and demands PRussia to back down and amek Leopold withdraw his claim
Prussia agrees in order to get France to push further to issues in the South German states regarding the threat of Prussian influence in those states
France sends diplomats to discuss these issues with Prussia
After the meeting, Prussia twists it to make it look like they just told the French diplomats to go home
Napoleon, seeing himself as Napoleon I successor, gets pissed at this disrespect, so Franco-Prussianw ar begins
Prussia twists it to to South German states saying "Wow, look, we were reasonable, and even backed down Leopolds claim, now these French are invading, if they beat me, they're going to rule you!"
The South German states would prefer Prussian influence rather then French since at least Prussia's a German state, so would join on prussia's side
Prussia wins, and in a palace in Versailles, Proclaims the German Empire
In the peace deal, Germany annexes Alcase-Lorraine, which would set the Franco-German rivalry, which would eventually become WW1

Good history podcasts like "The civil war 1861-1865 A history podcast" by rich and tracy or "History of the Second World War" by Wesley Livesay definitely dont just take their stuff from wikipedia.
General history podcasts might but if a podcasts is dedicated to a specific area and/or time period they usually incorporate a decent amount of academic literature and sometimes even primary sources (civil war is really interesting because they use quotes from first hand accounts of soldiers and officers to set the scene which is especially interesting when they are talking about specific battles)

Oof idk why he wants to research ww2 but its really tough to get a good understanding of that war. Its unfortunately a recent enough war that results in much of the books on the subject being highly biased making it extremely hard to get good sources. Like our understanding of the Eastern front is only become complete in the last decade or so. If you're gonna research anything to do with the Eastern front, you have to read more recent literature, because older literature is 100% reliant on the writings of Eric Von Manstein and Franz Halder, both german field marshals who glazed themselves and the german army like crazy. And because we had no access to data or accounts from the USSR because of the cold war, our understanding of the front is heavily biased in the german favour

The Franco-Prussian war lead to the unified german states becoming Germany as a nation. Prussia was the strongest of the german states and lead the nationalist movement.
Shortly after this unification and a rapid industrialization period Germany was seen as the number one threat to the French and more importantly British global power/status quo. Germany was resource rich and was seen as a sleeping giant.
These fears led to a series of actions to limit the growth/power of the newly formed nation/empire. Some of these actions were allying themselves with german opposition nations, naval conflicts, and economic restrictions on trade. Germany’s perspective on these actions lead to a increase in nationalism and militarism. You’re average historian will characterize Germany actions as being “aggressive” but this is other with the framework of Germany making waves and challenging the status quo. I would consider this to be a failure to consider the German perspective and hand waving away England’s actions to stifle the Germans.
