Great work, Jordan. You are the only reporter/journalist covering stories like this as news. Others do good work offering their opinions about your stories, but you are the one creating "primary material" that others use to comment. Keep up the great work.

Phew, West Philly is tough, so good on you for covering this. To be fair, this happens to middle class people too, but it's much more devastating when you're lower income and are faced with something like this. Many of us are just one step away from this, even if we're so-called middle class.

This is great reporting which shows you where the U.S. is right now which is real life crisis surrounding Americans that's been on going for quite awhile even long before the pandemic twoyears ago. Truly these people have nowhere else to go to but end up living in a encampment which is near the area that's been home to them for more than 25 years. The governing is at it's best to throw out people which they simply worked hard their whole lives and now being bombarded with high rents they could no longer live at and this encampment is their way of showing protest to what it is really happening.which this is their only way of expressing their feelings towards the government.

I was recently chatting up a newly houseless fella in my neighborhood. All he really wants is his home back. Someone.e else owning your house is the cruelest and strangest part of housing. All people should have a roof to call their own. Banks and landlords need to go the way of the dinosaurs.

Great stuff you're doing, Jordan. This is a story that needs the light, and good for you to bring some.
I'm disabled and live in a studio apt in SE FL and the landlord here raised my rent by $100 a month!! They wanted to raise it by $200 but after I protested they only increased by $100 which is still insane. I've lived here for 10 years and usually my rent goes up by $20 or $30 a month. They're heartless, and have no problem destroying people's lives to make an ever higher profit.

    • @Fern.99
      @Fern.99 2 роки тому

Ooo in FL? Their home insurance and taxes have skyrocketed. Quite probable that $100 per month doesn’t cover their cost increases. Mom&Pop landlords and tenants are both getting screwed by corporate greed.

That is disturbing. I was hopeful about communities starting to come together and detach from corporate control but this is worrisome. They prey on economically desperate people and communities to keep them dependent

It’s like people are disposable. They could build around low income workers. There’s still a little rent diversity in the Eastside of Milwaukee. People used to be more mixed economically and research shows that’s good for communities.

Gates is buying farmland to make Agri-Tech investments. As in creating productive seeds, sustainable biofuels and super crops. He also has a non-profit AG ONE which helps farmers in developing countries access to Agri-Tech which in turn helps their yield and adapt to changes in climate. He is definitely ahead of the curve on the future of smart farming.

A country that allows poverty is psychopathic. It's not hard to see: capital/wealth rules. You either have it or you don't. People are how you grow wealth. People keep the hamster wheel chugging away.
As long as people believe the political process is how we solve poverty and the problems of worshiping work, we will have poverty and mass austerity - meaning we will live in a world where everyone will work more and more and more. No end in sight. Pure plantation farming. Efficiency. The "system" is judged by its efficiency. Politics is about efficiency. Who is going to find out how work will amount to increased living standards? The endless search for efficiency.
Maybe we should question our assumptions. The entire notion of efficiency is predicated on "us" not being able to solve any problem directly. Instead, we have to let the market decide who will "innovate" us out of our problem. There is no way to directly solve a problem in capitalism. It's like living in a world of smoke and mirrors.

I know this is just not anything that could ever be considered, but why couldn't the city of Philadelphia, state of Pennsylvania, and the federal government purchase this housing, that is evidently a wonderful neighborhood for all who live there, and continue the stability and well-being of the community that has thrived there thus far?

There is about 200 pages of paperwork for HUD housing in Illinois. It is a lot of work for apartment managers to learn how to do all the paperwork to the exact specifications. The main purpose of the paperwork is to be able to legally prove that a housing --apartments or houses, are NOT slums even if they are very old and owners don't like to do repairwork. The reason it is important to prove that rental property isn't a slum is because it is illegal for owners to rent slum properties.
I hope the problem with this is apparent.

Damn, always coving important shit that nobody else is! John Oliver actually did a great segment on homelessness and those "vouchers" that basically nobody accepts. One lady waited 19 years for her voucher and then nobody would even accept it.

I heard some mention of HUD early on. HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge is accepting invitations to dialogue. Reach out to her and see if she will engage on this and report back. On another note, in conversation with some longtime NYC housing activists, the subject of the preponderance of mostly VACANT luxury developments came up. Wonder how that looks in Philly?

If new landlords will not accept vouchers from tenants seeking housing, the previous landlords must be required to continue providing housing to those tenants. Period. And a new buyer of the property must be required to continue providing housing to the tenants.
