It was also the scene of annual celebrations of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth I. The area has been used for a variety of reviews, parades and other ceremonies since the 17th century.
The adjacent Horse Guards building was once the Headquarters of the British Army. The Duke of Wellington was based in Horse Guards when he was Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. The current General Officer Commanding London District still occupies the same office and uses the same desk. Wellington also had living quarters within the building, which today are used as offices.

For much of the late 20th century, Horse Guards Parade was used as a car park for senior civil servants; about 500 were granted the privilege, which was known as the 'Great Perk'.[1] The PIRA's mortar attack on 10 Downing Street on 7 February 1991, which was carried out from a vehicle parked in Horse Guards Avenue nearby, narrowly missed causing casualties and led to concerns. In April 1993 the Royal Parks Review Group, headed by Dame Jennifer Jenkins (later Baroness Jenkins) recommended that the parade should be restored for public use, and linked to St James's Park by closing Horse Guards Road.[2] The proposal was taken up by the Department of National Heritage but then resisted by senior Cabinet members, apparently under pressure from the civil servants who were to lose their parking places.[3]
Public revelation of the resistance led to considerable criticism such as by prominent columnist Simon Jenkins who pressured the Head of the Home Civil Service, Sir Robin Butler to end general usage as parking as part of a wider programme of reforms.[1] In late 1996 Horse Guards Parade was cleared, for repairs. In March 1997 it was announced that parking was banned.[4]

Seeing a female guard is so awesome to me. As a female United States military member, I respect this woman so much. Being a queen’s guard is one of, If not the highest honor. So proud of her!

@Garry Arden that would be amazing. My father was a guard for the tomb years ago. Had I joined the army, I would definitely attempt to get that special duty. I hope to see a female there as well some day ❤️
When I was a boy I told my mom I wanted to be a horse guard...she told me I couldn't I said, why ...she said you have to be British. I did serve in the army though 4 tours in Iraq , 1/75th Ranger...and I own 2 horses today.

So many people don't know that rider use the reins to control the horse, plus they are working too. Seeing a horse upclose is fine but just keep your hands to your self. Sheesh. They should have sign to say a fine for pulling reins or touching the horse

Absolutely right. The gaurd knows her horse. Is it not polite to ask the rider if you may stand near to have a photo . I don't like people touching the horses even if you likethem .They are on duty As a guide dog is . You always ask the owner. What is wrong with these people!

It annoys the crap out of me that people think it is okay to take pictures with the guards and touch their animals. Those animals are working. And they are all humans to.
We have a National pride in these Men and Women horse guards their horses and Guards on foot Duty, to see them besieged by Ignorant tourists is sickening like a circus to them , inappropriate touching of the Horses and The Guards Men and Women happens every minute and distracts the Soldiers from their Duty it is not tolerated in any other country but the UK and should be stopped with the public Behind all the gates it's inhuman ..

All of the horses of the Queen's Guard are exhibiting stress behaviors from the actions of the tourists. Selfies and constant dabbing at their faces is really too much for them to cope with.
