  • Well Alone Season 8 Episode 8 was and exciting one! In this video I give a few more details about my grizzly bear encounters and talk about getting "charged" by a bear. If you saw the episode you see me tracking the bear before he comes running at me and I spray the bear spray in his direction. Here's the low down! We also see Theresa having trouble with the set line she put out last episode, Colter gets his fish trap stuck and lost, and Biko declares war on the mice!
    Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

    Gotta love how everyone else on the show got closed to tapping and break down when they saw a griz. You look like a kid who just saw Santa for the first time and it literally charged you.

    It was a good idea to keep that fir tree between you and the bear. I tend to keep my computer monitor between myself and a bear... and thanks to your great footage I got as close as I'll ever need to be. Thanks again for the retrospectives of each episode, it really adds to the enjoyment and knowledge gain.

      But, if Clay won't, how is he posting video's on you tube while the show is still airing? I realize this season is over long before it's shown, but wouldn't History/Alone have them sign something forbidding the winner from posting video's? Of course, he never claims to be the winner.just a thought.

    A few points:
    1. You said, "If you come across the wrong grizzly, you could find yourself in real danger". I'm not sure how many people noticed that but thank you for saying that. Not every Griz is a savage hunter looking to eat you. Of course, they demand respect but they are not the mindless monsters (quite the opposite actually) that they are often portrayed. Most of them are happy to avoid conflicts.
    2. Getting charged by a Griz is certainly not something you ever forget. Even black bears will make you weak in the knees. I've had the fortune to be charged (bluff) by a grizzly once. Don't need to do it again.
    3. I'm sure that a lot of it was her condition but Rose was developing a pretty dangerous attitude. The whole, "I'm tough so I'm just going to get through this" can get you into a world of danger. -50 boots do nothing if you aren't generating body heat. Given that she was having trouble staying conscious, she would have been in major trouble if she hadn't been extracted. Given the setup of the show, there isn't much guarantee that anyone would have known about it until it was too late. Glad she got out when she needed to.

    • @mikeet207
      @mikeet207 3 роки тому

      Agree about Rose. I think she should have thrown in the towel earlier. Even when medical arrived she was still in a state of denial. I completely get it, but her life seemed like it was at serious risk. She almost blacked out in the field...away from her emergency gear. She could've been dead right than and there period.

    • @caseysmith544
      @caseysmith544 3 роки тому

      @@mikeet207 No I do not think she was in Denial but in shock, also really messed up emotionally for not being able to use her senses due to the state her body was in physically. I have seen those stars before but it was not hunger or starvation but dehydration on a hot 105 F day despite having a water bottle I filled up one time on the route (there was a state building in the route and a gas station on the route as well) and a single then nearly new item, Mountain Dew Extreme that I was seeing stars when I was doing my brothers paper route while he was gone at a Boy Scout camp. This was the first time seeing this that bad.
      I have also seen the Stars (worst ever) during Marathon I did in Fargo 2014, the Fargo Marathon. The temps that day got up to 84 F and 84% humidity and it was warm for that time of year so I was not used to having temps like this. If there had not been at one spot i was seeing Stars a water station kids were running in front of there house about 1/8th mile from the true aid station I would not have made it to the spot and this time I was seeing stars and star/electric looking outlines of a body shape and size of my body right in front of me. That Marathon I crapped out on despite being in great shape, just not in shape for the weather. I recovered after the mini station and the official station taking in both water and the sports drink at the same time and grabbing a water to go after leaving the station. Yes I had to fully stop not just walk/slow walk the drink/aid station the way I normally do unless it is a Beyond marathon race then I fully stop at the stations.
      One guy who I saw same dude who was in his 50's at a different 1/2 Marathon almost falling over he hit the deck due to the heat and was so bad only the first few guys and one female in the Marathon got to finish before they pulled the event due to temps that day getting to almost 100 F. Anyhow this time at Fargo that guy in his 50's in one skinny section that the Fargo marathon got changed due to water on the Red river and was not needed at time of the event was rather skinny had a red emergency vehicle go right past me nearly clipping me in the head with the mirror to the guy, he tried to keep up with the under 4 hour guy that I had just decided to ditch at about 10-13 miles into the race at nearly 1/2 way point. Also at both events he wore a black compression short sleeve top and knee length running/sport shorts with black compression built in them, never did learn from the first event to have lighter colors for the day. Apparently the under 4 hour pacer finished at 4:05:00 or so due to the heat and every single pacer did this finishing at 5-10 minutes over the time with one of them the 2:30 hour pacer most of that group and guy finished with the 3:00 hour group due to the heat and the slowest pacer at 5:15 hour was faster then the group at 5:00 hours right after I finished due to pacer being way better then the group and had they stayed out they would have injured them selves due to the unusual heat and humidity for the time of year in May.

    Everyone else on this season have been openly afraid of the bears and here you are chasing one around trying to give it a hug lol.
    I found such new-found, major respect for Rose. She was puttin' near willing to die rather than tapping out.

    Been into survival for a couple decades now.
    Alone has always been a pain in my ass when describing viable strategies to the uninitiated.
    I think this season really highlights what can go wrong you have legal limitations and locational limitations.
    I think it would have lasted much longer of people could hunt and trap in an unlimited manner and additionally of they could leave a bad location if that's what they are dealt.
    Location may be the single most important factor to ones survival, when you are limited so heavily as to where you go you are then hugely limited in how long you can survive.

    Interesting your take on the boots being too tight. As my wife and I were watching the show I commented that no matter how good your boots are, if they are too tight you have no air pockets to create that insulation interface. I regularly go ice fishing in 20 to 30 below temps often with no shelter. One pair of good wool socks and lots of "wiggle" room. No frozen feet. Still rooting for you Clay! Thanks Clay, another excellent video. 👍🏻
    For me, it seems as if one reason for your continued success (the others being your knowledge and experience of woodsmanship skills, ecosystems and wildlife knowledge) is the fact that you meditate daily and see the beauty and opportunity in nature. When you said that every morning you go outside, have a cup of tea, close your eyes and let the sunlight wash over your face (being at one with the world that you encompass), that was when I thought ‘this guy’s gonna win this’.
    You seem to prepare yourself psychologically on a daily basis. So, it’s not “Me Vs Nature” it’s more like “I am a part of nature and just need to do that which I know to do”. That my interpretation anyway! 🤔😂
    Well done Clay, and thanks again for the videos!
    Oh, and on a side note to the bear alarm video - trying to outwit Fen…. Come on man! He’s not a dafty, and his mum and dad have taught him well! 🤣😂👍🏻 Big love to the Hayes family!

    Chasing bears with cameras is never a good idea..If I've learned anything from all my bear encounters, it's that they are an unpredictable predator, and when a black bear is following you, it's because your on the menu..Atleast in his mind..No one should ever chase a grizzly with a camera and bear spray, you're just asking for trouble that you could have easily avoided..Glad it worked out though..

  • @airshipguys

    I've had some very close Brown Bear encounters but I've NEVER felt calm afterwards. I didn't like the way this scene was edited, they cut right as the bear was running so it's hard to understand what's happening. I've carried pepper spray but never used it "in combat", did you hit the bear with the spray? Did it react to the spray or was it already leaving? Did you get any spray on you? I have when practicing and it's wicked. I can't imagine trying to clean up cayenne pepper oil without soap or running water.
    Great episode!

    Finding this season a little difficult to watch as the successes that we all root for are far and few between.
