I got the Harley Benton TE-22HH and checked it out. Here's my initial thoughts!
Just bought this. $82. Yes the action was high. But I adjusted the saddles, the truss rod, and it was perfect. Again…..$82. Also changed strings to Ernie Balls. Perfect. Yes, it needs some work. But again….$82. What do you expect? I was pleasantly surprised when I got it. Beginners: spend a bit more on a better instrument so you don’t get discouraged. Then, when you are able to do the set up yourself and want a project, get one of these! I will change the pickups to some Seymour Duncans, and change the nut. Personal preference though. This is worth every penny of $82.
best review I've seen of this guitar! felt like friend advice 💖 thank you!
I ordered one and got it in the mail two weeks ago. Absolute horrible QC with tons of flaws, and the nut on the low E was cut so low there was no way to get rid of fret buzz. The guitar also wasn't string thru like it is on the website.
HOWEVER
I complained about all the flaws and Thomann sent me a new one for free. This guitar is in a whole different ball park, I can't really find anything wrong with the QC and it plays really well. I love it! It really shows that what you get is really hit or miss. I would say that for the price the new guitar I got is hands down unbeatable.
Great video! I would love to see the new ST-20HH Active SBK
I want to try it myself too!
I've made neck shims for 3 of my 8 guitars. Solves the action problem usually if you can't fix it with the saddle and truss rod.
Yeah I fixed this one by adjusting neck and bridge but it's good to know you've solved your issue that way too!
I reckon manufacturers set the action higher to disguise the uneven frets. Both my Harley Benton guitars (TE-20, RB-612) needed a major setup, including neck shim, fret work, nut and tuners. You get what you pay for. Good value for money, just factor in £100 for a tech setup or be prepared to spend a couple of hours doing it yourself.
It's not always like that though. I've had some HB guitars that were very playable out of the box. I had to do very minor improvements to make them really good. The frets aren't that uneven either.
I found the same thing with my lefty TE-20HH. Ialso had nasty fret sprout up and down both sides of the neck. A truss rod adjustment and some work with an emery block and it's a fun guitar. Not for a brand new player unless you buy it s a gift for one and set it up first.
Yeah the guitars can be quite a hit or miss. Some are great and others not. If I was giving someone a guitar such as this one, I'd set it up for the person. If you can't set it up, get a slightly more expensive one as it'll likely be better set up.
@@geirisk8 Mine was also set up like ass but I had it set up and now I use it at gigs. I love playing this guitar.
How high is the action in mm(if you measured)? I think it’s hard to gauge string height in a video, unless it’s banana bowed.😅
Does this come with the hex keys for the saddles, and the truss rod? My “high end” HB’s came with em.
And how is the neck relief?
I've already fixed all of this so I can't say but as I say in the video, I can comfortably fit a finger between the fretboard and the strings. It's just bad setup. Not everyone knows how to correct these things, that's why I'm giving the guitar a hard time for such a lousy setup, but it's expected for the price I guess :)
I must have been lucky the action on mine is great.
Use the alan key including dude I have one of those and it plays amazing
Yeah mine came also with a bad setup. Ridiculous high action. But everything works fine. The only problem i have is the selector switch. It's loose and wobbles quiet a bit, it makes a rattleling noise. I'm not talking about the plastic knob, but the metal part. I wanted to tightnen the screws but it was already tight. But when i switch it feels sturdy. Its just that it wobbles and its kinda annoying. Any idea how i can fix this? Overall it doesnt affect anything, works perfectly fine and i can live with it. But if i can fix it and know how, then why not, you know?
Get new switches and full sized pots. Preferably CTS pots. Once you upgraded the hardware these guitars can hang with anything in the 600 to 1000 dollar price range just by investing a 100 to 200 dollars.
What we understood from this video:
Action is high
Action is high
Action is high
Phew, that is some high action my friend.but I'm sure if you get done intonating it it'll be fine.thankfully there's you tube for beginners to learn how to set it up.
Intonation doesn't do anything when action is that high, you need lower action to get good intonation. It literally isn't possible to have good intonation with high action, it's just how the guitar works.
@@geirisk8 ahhh,Gotcha!!!learn something new everyday.I think I meant to say "action"lol thanks man.
Advice, buy another tuner
waste of money! instead you could have the new te62 lake placid blue and double bound justa saying REGRET
Yeah to some it would be a waste but I've made it good :)
Waste of money? All you have to do is too adjust the string height. That's what the Allen key is for. And when your upgrade the hardware this guitar can hang with anything double to triple its price. Harley Bentons are awesome.
