As a native Spanish speaker, "It's me" sounds odd. Why? I am it?
It was taught to me that the word "it" refers to a thing, animal, or situation. It is clear to me that it refers to something mentioned previously.
- Who is it?
- It's me.
Even with that knowledge, it still sounds strange to me, which makes it very interesting.
Why do these two phrases sound different if "let us" is the same as "let's"?
- You have to let us go, mother. We must lead our own lives.
