Hi Emma, ​​nice to greet you, hoping that you and your family are doing well. I love your classes, the way you teach and the different recommendations you give us. I appreciate your work and yes, what you just mentioned about how not to learn a new language is correct, I am Brazilian, I currently live in a country where the official language is Spanish. It is just as you mentioned, it is a process, right now, I feel that I speak Spanish better than Portuguese, I also speak English.
In the beginning, I made those mistakes trying to learn Spanish, but with time I realize that I was doing wrong trying to learn specifics words, etc.
To learn English was the same, in the beginning I was trying to learn every single word but as you said, it is almost imposible to learn over than 1 million words, so I focused in learning the words I really need to know to have a conversation and it worked to me.

honestly I don't used to writing down all the vocabs I encountered when reading bcoz i find it time consuming and there's a possibility that I won't read them again. She mentioned about reading classic books and yes she is right it is so boring and quite challenging to understand them. If I'm not mistaken i tried reading the book of dracula but i stopped bcoz it's too advanced for my level. Up to this moment i still can't avoid translating words from my own language to English. and whenever i make mistakes i feel so frustrated and beat myself up. I hope that this year i would be able to improved my English as well as my confidence to speak and learn that making mistakes is totally normal. Thanks Emma for this invaluable lesson you have provided us today. I will try my best and put more effort on improving myself.

I commend you for your choice with French even though I’m a native Spanish speaker. I say it because the total number of countries (in five continents) and speakers is really big. English, Spanish and French are the most widespread languages by far. It would be interesting to see you speaking French one day.

Hi! I'm French, and I started Duolingo to learn Spanish again and practised every day since October. That may be a good start to understand the basics, however, that's not something you want to do everyday.
I started to learn English at 7 years old, but I really had to put some effort once I was on the Internet, when popular websites weren't translated yet. Also, I follow a lot of content creators talking English.
I asked myself "why didn't I reach that level in Spanish?", and I think that Spanish isn't as imposed as English, on the Internet. However, I want to have a fluent level in that language too, and started to play video games I already know, but in Spanish, this time! I take notes of words I don't know and sentences that I can use in daily life.
