Teen's clever trap for spotted lanternflies

  • Original airdate: 9/24/2019 | We stomp them, and spray them, but a Montgomery County teen might have a better plan for getting rid of those nasty spotted lanternflies.
Rachel Bergey, 14, started caring because they were hogging up the tree she likes to climb.
Then she found out she might not ever be able to climb her tree anymore if the spotted lanternfly did it what it does and kills trees.
So she got to work. When the bugs start crawling up the tree they hit the foil ring. They die about 24 hours later. She killed 1,200 of them in two weeks with just two traps.
Bergey is headed to Washington D.C. next month. She's one of 30 middle schoolers competing in a national science competition.

Not sure what they are funding, but it could be something that finally kills them off like a targeted fungus or breeding of genetic modified lanternfly that will have non-viable babies. Something like that is needed to fix this permanently. Not everyone is going to make these traps, so there will always be more lanternflies living on those properties, and in the woods, too. The traps definitely work great though, and are extremely cheap.

Call me crazy but it seems like this reporter could have filmed a better explanation of
how her trap and foil are secured to the netting and tree.
I suspect someone is going to devise a way to modify her design & attach at least 1 bungee
cord to some netting to hold everything in place, so that it works for trees of varying
diameters. A second bungee cord could be used to account for the difference.
In other words, 1 bungee could be a consistent length, while the second would vary
    to accommodate the different diameters.
This seems like it will be less messy to assemble and also much more effective
than other solutions I have seen for this lantern fly problem

The most effective pest control solutions are often the ones that exploit some quirk of their biology or natural instinct. This brilliant young lady did exactly that with this trap prototype. With a bit of refinement (not too much as the prototype is nearly perfect as is) to make it simpler to attach to different trees of varying diameters and bark types, this could be an inexpensive and very viable option for a lot of people and communities who are dealing with this pest.

  • @ccdogpark

Yesterday, I was able to devise a trap based on this principle,
around our huge oak tree that is working reasonably well.
There hasn't been enough publicity about the attraction of this pest to oak trees.
People in PA with Oak trees need to devise a solution ** BEFORE **
they notice their tree is infested. I used some hardware wire screening
in conjunction with some 36" x 84" vinyl screen door replacement kit
to make this work. I also use a lot of electrical ties to keep the screen
from "doubling over" too close together. The only problem I encountered
was that the "heavy duty" stapling gun I bought for this job, would not penetrate
the bark of the oak tree and I had to use small screws to secure the netting
    to the tree.

The point is, the ultra wealthy will donate millions or billions of dollaries to charities, nonprofits, or supposedly humanitarian organizations and so on; it leads to bloating and entitlement, and often loss of the meaning of a group or mission. They'll use some of that money to advertise and try and collect more money. They'll use some one of that money to prop up higher ups and provide extra benefits to the people in a company or nonprofit who fight for them.
In the meantime, kids, college students, young people -- could use a grand, or two, or five at a time and prove themselves that they are developing ideas from a place of passion. but game changing isn't what the ultra rich wants, control is. So that's why they donate to organizations they are heavily affiliated with, such as in the case of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. Because they are affiliated with the non-profit and control it, but donate money to it, the money they donate is written off in taxes as a charitable donation, and yet whatever the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation does is not seen as behavior of a business, but as a non-profit. Non profits are also very likely to get government contracts. I could go on, but the general public doesn't want to prove the skeptic, they want to prove their owners.

Labor in China isn't cheap by a long shot. People working are paid by China, not the company. Think of China as a HUGE employment agency. China gets $15/hour and pays $15/day plus rice.
The appeal is that a company is not regulated to death and imports are taxed at point of consumption, not entry. They don't have to deal with the state saying a back door must open outward AND the feds saying the door must open inward. They do not have to comply with affirmative action nonsense, sensitivity training, redundant and conflicting/costly nonsense. They don't worry about being held hostage by employees and their politics. They just pay China and let THEM deal (or not) with it all.
