Take them and stick them in to spider webs, feed them to mantises. If you hand feed them to local predators you'll teach those predators to go after them, like what divers are doing with lionfish
I don’t think that’s how insects work. Spiders are trappers and won’t even care what their prey is as long it’s in the net the same goes for trapdoors. And as for mantis they are stalker that goes for the nearest preys. At least that’s how I perceive it but I could be wrong.
Other guys right, insects will always go for whatever they can and the only deterrent that’ll usually work to repel a predator is one the prey item itself expels usually, like an ant spraying acid onto a mantis for getting too close

Been seeing these things since before last summer. My town immediately had a notice posted that they’re invasive. My friends and I spent a day out in the yard together just whacking them with tennis rackets once because they were all over the oak tree in my yard. Thankfully, I’ve been seeing a lot less of them this year, and have been getting better at getting rid of them.

For some reason stepping on them worked a couple years ago, but this year they appear to have faster reflexes making it nearly impossible to just step on them.
Maybe we stepped on the slow ones over and over again, and ended up selecting for the ones that have faster reflexes? Bc those are the ones that survive to reproduce. (just a guess)

The Lord of the Flies example would more point towards tribalism within the species, as we in our early stages used to hunt in groups for our survival. Different tribes would fight eachother over resources or becausethey were different, which leads to our own downfall. But not towards nature.

As a lifeguard, I've seen these things at their first evolutionary stage: just black spotted jumping bugs. Then overtime in late July I have seen their bodies go red and able to jump higher. Then mid August I began seeing their adult stage. They're really annoying at adulthood stage. They aren't great flyers but they'll try to land on anything that seems to be 'viable' for them. Just crush 'em if you see them.
I've lived where this bug first showed up in PA, and we have been dealing with them for like 6 years. There's nothing you can do. Don't waste your time with chemicals and crap. After a few years the birds eventually realize they are a food source and there won't be as many of them compared to the first years they show up in your area.

My coworker and I go on a walk every day to get away from our computers, and about 3 weeks ago I spotted one, recognized it, caught it, reported it, and killed it. Now we usually cross 3-6 of them on each walk, and make a game of crushing them. They jump pretty far, but stumble and have to reset when they land. That's the best time to step on them. This morning, one landed right in front of my motorcycle (in the middle of the city!!) at a stoplight. Called it a 'steering exercise' to hit it when the light turned green. For once, I don't feel bad about killing bugs XD

Mixture of dawn dish detergent and water is effective in killing them. Add mixture to a gallon pump sprayer and spray. The sprayer uses pressure so you don’t have to be too close to them to spray.

Check the tree’s for their eggs around your area or whenever you walk around if you have them in your area. The eggs do overwinter and they will be able to spring out as soon as it’s warm again sadly.
It reminds me of the nasty fig beetle we have here in Southern CA. I hate that nasty bug. It just loves me. I’ve had to get three of them on separate occasions of my car.
I always called those guys Citrus beetles, now I know they are Fig beetles, because they are always on the orange tree here! Big shiny green and loves to fly into your head like a dumb drone. XD I like them but they can be mean and eat all my oranges before I get to one. Lol

ah man,,, i was at Six Flags Great Adventure (NJ) last week and they were having a blast around the SkyScreamer. there were so many. many landed on me throughout the day but it is what it is. killed a few that i could,,, they jump away so fast!

They grow a lot bigger than just a fingernail. I just had one come into my house. They also look brown when they’re older- and the red becomes noticeable when they spread they’re wings.
Lol they been a huge issue here where I live in eastren Pennsylvania for years now. We been stomping, scrapping, crushing for awhile now. Also there is sticky tape you can get and wrapp your trees with. Just wrap it around the trunks. That also helps to catch them.
One of these things flew on my face out of nowhere and flew off as I was walking home. I’m out for revenge now! Im getting my fly swatter, heading to the park and taking out as many as I can. They messed with the wrong person!
PT Alpine pesticide. Sprayed it around my door to my porch. They were attracted to it. Not long after they walked on it would they become paralyzed and die on their own. You’re supposed to spray it every 30 days but it’s been over a year and it still works. The pesticide is illegal for home use in certain states, so you will want to check on that first. I’m not sure if you can spray it on plants.
these spotted lanterflies are really attracted to Chinese cedar or Chinese toona trees. I have a small cherries orchard with only one Chinese toona tree planted not too far away. but each year I can only find spotted lanterflies on this single tree, it's their nature to bond with Chinese toona. but sadly Chinese toona is also a invasive tree species. if you plant them, you have to keep an eye on them cause they tend to spread by roots very quick

I have 4 spiders in my yard and I feed them 2 a day for the whole summer and the spiders are fat and healthy and loves me I think they know food comes when I get near them because they come out to the front of their web and wait for dinner
Raise a million native birds and feed them a lot of lanterflies then when they are released they go to town on them, and even teach other birds to eat them. Birds now eat stinkbugs, so why not lanternflies?

I saw one for the first time about four weeks ago (I'm outside and garden a lot), and since then, I have seen a few every single day. I don't think killing them does anything meaningful. I see them land high up on a telephone poll, and what about all of the ones in the surrounding miles of land? They're here to stay, like it or not. The best and only meaningful solution now is to import a specialist predator species or a fungal disease that only affects the lantern fly, because they aren't going anywhere if some people squish a few of them.
I did too! Was on a road trip in PA two days ago and stopped at a gas station. Saw it flying around while stretching my legs and thought it was a cool looking bug. I took a picture and posted it on instagram. Didn’t know that it was invasive until my friends told me while I showed them

If this is helpful for anyone, with a lot of vegetation on their property, we ordered a few cocoons of praying mantises, and they are carnivorous, and may help to keep the population of lantern bugs down to an extent

Practically zero tree mortality here in PA. Please don't overreact and spray your landscape trees with insecticide. It's not necessary. They do however damage crop fruit buy depositing their honeydew on the fruit, which then turns black from mold.
I took a ride through PA last weekend with my parents and the amount of dead trees we saw was astounding!! Lantern flies were everywhere! This is not about overreacting, this is about facts.
@@missycitty9478 The dead trees you saw were ash trees which have died as a result of the Emerald ash borer... no connection to the spotted lantern fly. Pa has an estimated310 million ash trees and it is expected that we will lose upwards of 95 percent of them. To treat EAB each ash tree would need to be injected _(not sprayed) every year... and this would need to be done extremely early as soon as the EAB larvae are deposited under the bark. Spotted Lantern Fly requires a different method of treatment.
I put white vinegar in a spray bottle and sprayed. No water and the spray bottle should be spray not a stream. I used Myers bottle that had some cleaning spray in which was gone. It slows them down so u can use a fly swatter.
Then you'd have to deal with the predator. Hawaii was plagued by rats that had stowed away on ship for years. They were threatening local fauna and damaging structures. So, they introduced cats, which quickly brought the rat population to heel. After a few years, the cats had begun to spread like wildfire and were starting to threaten local bird populations. They're still dealing with that problem today. The problem with invasive species of _any_ sort is that they have no natural counter, meaning they can spread fast and grow hardier.
I agree with you. It’d have to be well thought out on which predator to use. There have been a few cases where it’s worked without damage to ecosystems but it is a lot harder. Here’s praying they find maybe something already in our ecosystem that could eat it and all they’d need to do is reproduce that animal to greater numbers that way it could be less damaging. Perhaps a type of bird or something.

I saw one flying midair yesterday. I smacked it to the ground and crushed it. I proceeded to find several other of these and I crushed each and every one of them.

Penn State has done a lot of research on how to deal with them. I'd recommend searching it out if you're concerned. They are pretty manageable for the folks looking to keep their yards/properties free of them. Commercial industry and wildlife management is another story...

They're fairly slow and clumsy. They don't even react much when u're near them, I've seen a video where someone was just vacuuming them off of a tree.

They freeze in the winter and die off. But their eggs don’t. They lay them in sept until they die and then those can last until spring

Lol they been a huge issue here where I live in eastren Pennsylvania for years now. We been stomping, scrapping, crushing for awhile now. Also there is sticky tape you can get and wrapp your trees with. Just wrap it around the trunks. That also helps to catch them.

PT Alpine pesticide. Sprayed it around my door to my porch. They were attracted to it. Not long after they walked on it would they become paralyzed and die on their own. You’re supposed to spray it every 30 days but it’s been over a year and it still works. The pesticide is illegal for home use in certain states, so you will want to check on that first. I’m not sure if you can spray it on plants.

Lanternfly killing tip: Swat them from head on. Their eyes are on the side of their heads and they will dodge a side attack more easily.

these spotted lanterflies are really attracted to Chinese cedar or Chinese toona trees. I have a small cherries orchard with only one Chinese toona tree planted not too far away. but each year I can only find spotted lanterflies on this single tree, it's their nature to bond with Chinese toona. but sadly Chinese toona is also a invasive tree species. if you plant them, you have to keep an eye on them cause they tend to spread by roots very quick
Yet another reason for me to not want an ailanthus tree (the oxymoronically-named Tree of Heaven) on my property-the trouble is, several neighbors have them in THEIR yards!

I have 4 spiders in my yard and I feed them 2 a day for the whole summer and the spiders are fat and healthy and loves me I think they know food comes when I get near them because they come out to the front of their web and wait for dinner
Raise a million native birds and feed them a lot of lanterflies then when they are released they go to town on them, and even teach other birds to eat them. Birds now eat stinkbugs, so why not lanternflies?

I saw one for the first time about four weeks ago (I'm outside and garden a lot), and since then, I have seen a few every single day. I don't think killing them does anything meaningful. I see them land high up on a telephone poll, and what about all of the ones in the surrounding miles of land? They're here to stay, like it or not. The best and only meaningful solution now is to import a specialist predator species or a fungal disease that only affects the lantern fly, because they aren't going anywhere if some people squish a few of them.
There are so many of these bugs in NYC now,they are flying to you,making you feel awful,they are also jumping if you try to step on them.

I did too! Was on a road trip in PA two days ago and stopped at a gas station. Saw it flying around while stretching my legs and thought it was a cool looking bug. I took a picture and posted it on instagram. Didn’t know that it was invasive until my friends told me while I showed them

If this is helpful for anyone, with a lot of vegetation on their property, we ordered a few cocoons of praying mantises, and they are carnivorous, and may help to keep the population of lantern bugs down to an extent

Practically zero tree mortality here in PA. Please don't overreact and spray your landscape trees with insecticide. It's not necessary. They do however damage crop fruit buy depositing their honeydew on the fruit, which then turns black from mold.
I took a ride through PA last weekend with my parents and the amount of dead trees we saw was astounding!! Lantern flies were everywhere!

@@missycitty9478 The dead trees you saw were ash trees which have died as a result of the Emerald ash borer... no connection to the spotted lantern fly. Pa has an estimated310 million ash trees and it is expected that we will lose upwards of 95 percent of them. To treat EAB each ash tree would need to be injected _(not sprayed) every year... and this would need to be done extremely early as soon as the EAB larvae are deposited under the bark. Spotted Lantern Fly requires a different method of treatment.

I put white vinegar in a spray bottle and sprayed. No water and the spray bottle should be spray not a stream. I used Myers bottle that had some cleaning spray in which was gone. It slows them down so u can use a fly swatter.

They need to introduce a predator that likes to eat it, someone tell the Amish too.
Then you'd have to deal with the predator. Hawaii was plagued by rats that had stowed away on ship for years. They were threatening local fauna and damaging structures. So, they introduced cats, which quickly brought the rat population to heel.
After a few years, the cats had begun to spread like wildfire and were starting to threaten local bird populations. They're still dealing with that problem today.
The problem with invasive species of _any_ sort is that they have no natural counter, meaning they can spread fast and grow hardier.
I agree with you. It’d have to be well thought out on which predator to use. There have been a few cases where it’s worked without damage to ecosystems but it is a lot harder. Here’s praying they find maybe something already in our ecosystem that could eat it and all they’d need to do is reproduce that animal to greater numbers that way it could be less damaging. Perhaps a type of bird or something.

Penn State has done a lot of research on how to deal with them. I'd recommend searching it out if you're concerned. They are pretty manageable for the folks looking to keep their yards/properties free of them. Commercial industry and wildlife management is another story...
