- Hello art-family,
The friendly people at Spacemate sent me a pencil case and asked if I'd be interested in trying it out as an outdoor field sketching kit. They sent me a pencil case and I was really impressed with how thick and sturdy it was. I'll leave a link to where you can find them below. Thanks for watching!
Happy sketching,
Jared

That was delightful! I, too, was worried that your sketchbook would fall in, giving watercolor a new meaning.
Haha :) maybe the camera lens made it look smaller than it was. It was actually pretty big and comfortable to lay my stuff out in.
You are incredibly brave for painting and holding your phone while in the pedal boat. If it was me i'm sure the entire kit would end up in the water.
Haha :) it was actually pretty spacious for being a little boat. :)
Nice to just have a lot of different options for different situations.
That’s true :)
I bet that was challenging trying to keep balance so nothing moves to paint and fun at the same time. Such a beautiful view from the boat to paint, fun!!!
It wasn’t bad at all- the boat was very low and stable and it wasn’t a big choppy lake. It was actually surprising still and stable. Big pocket behind us to keep bags and stuff.
All I could think was, it’s going to fall into the water!
Haha :) thanks for watching!
Cool!! Looks like a good option. These reviews are always helpful.
Hi Jarred. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker expat living abroad).
Nice review. I have a similar one (it's a bit different, though) from Angoo (Chinese brand but very affordable and durable - I've had mine for over a year and it's still like new, though a bit dirty but that's my fault!) That has an additional independent compartment at the top where I carry my sketching 2mm Clutch pencils and Fountain Pens (I can carry a total of 10 in that extra pocket and all fixed with individual holding rings). Inside it's almost identical as the one you've shown with the flap with rings for more pen holders + the extras for other stuff like watercolors, water flask, erasers, etc. The outside is not canvas type, though, its more loke a water resistant material but nice to the touch. Over here in Spain this one is a really good option at a very cheap price (10€ @ Amazon). I don't know how to link it here in your UA-cam channel, sorry. And from your hand in the video, mine is of similar size and thickness as the one shown, but a bit more functional (my opinion) though that one looks also very good, specially for the canvas type of texture (and from what I can tell).
Just in case other people may want to check out some other cases... (just trying to help).
I do have a question for you, if you don't mind me asking...
I see that you carry the Folio Palette size (I've been saving to get one this Autumn) with a similar layout as yours (not exactly, 'cause I'd like to carry a few more colors than the 9 that you have - I'm not at your level or nor may I ever be or if I will have time in my lifetime)... but my question is... which colours do you take with you for plein air painting (I just call it painting outdoors)...
Sorry to bother you with my questions and thanks again for sharing, not only your Art but your outdoor trips!
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😁👍😎
Hello! It's always a joy to hear from you.
I like to carry:
Cad yellow light
Cad Red Scarlet (or light)
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine and or Cobalt blue
Lavender
Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Umber
Neutral Tint
That Folio palette from them has been a joy to carry around and work with.
@@JaredCullum Hi Jarred... Sorry for not replying earlier but you know, summer time, swimming pools and over here in Spain we have way more summer holidays than in the US (one thing I can't complaint about!). 😄😄
Thanks a lot for the input. I have my own DS palette built up already (18 colours) though I try to always use a limited palette when painting, indoors and outdoors... It helps a lot to learn how to properly mix colours because with a limited palette you forget about which colour to choose and you learn how to get the colour you want, and enjoy the painting process a lot more (and it helps to avoid muddy colours when painting, specially outdoors, since you usually use complementary colours and you never mix too many colours/pigments at once - I usually use single pigment colours in watercolors).
I am saving up to get one of those Folio Palettes (a bit more expensive here due to import/export taxes + shipping costs, etc.) but I think worth the while if they last a very long time (from what I've seen in UA-cam they do last...). In any case, thanks a lot for the info and for your time to reply and I hope you've had a great summer so far and what's left of it with your family and friends...
Cheers from Sunny Spain!
😃👍😎
Just to clarify... from the 18 colours in watercolors I choose my 6-8 colours per piece that I work on...
With Gouache I'm currently only using the 12 starter kit from Windsor & Newton Designer's Gouache, which is very accessible here (price wise too) and I'm finding that, besides some specific colours (such as pink, some violets, maybe a grey...) it's pretty much ok, though I still can't paint as well as you do with Gouache (I try to use it more like Oil paint - thick -, not as Watercolour, because I already have watercolour for that purpose). Always learning, exploring and never stopping!
Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😄👍😎
busy drawing while other people put their weight into peddling😝
looks like a case that can hold all the basics that you need to go out and draw🙂
I’m busted! Haha 😂 I made it up to my wife. She did the first 20 and I did the rest out and back. ;)
lol at least you made up for the distance 😀 would have owed her flowers or a nice dinner if you hadnt 😜
What is the watercolor pallet your are using?
That is an Art Tool Kit folio palette. I love it for travel. Fits in the pocket. Just enough to do small or medium sketching on the go.
