    And of course as things occur to me AFTER the video is published, I am pretty sure that the formula for Rembrandt watercolours is different for the tubes than with their dry half pan sets. I think the dry half pans will rewet more easily, and the tube paints are designed to be used wet, rather than pouring them out into a palette and letting them dry. I definitely noticed that they were a lot easier to use straight out of tube, but after a few days in my palette they had dried to rocks. Just something to think about when shopping around!

      I know this is 6 months late but that's odd. I live in a desert (Arizona) and mine didn't dry down to rocks. Very easy to re-wet. I wonder what the difference is.

      I understanded only one where is difference is beetween pan and tube is winsor newton professional. but i dont know its true or not. Ps. and least dried Van Gogh from same factory is not nice at least some colours are plain terrible also disliked dried w&n professional. and few daniel smiths what are dried.(not all) and even these ds paints only in 8 hues.

    When I first started watching, I was so envious that you got such a deal on those paints. After watching the video though, that feeling evaporated. I was underwhelmed by these paints and that buff titanium seems to have a really low tinting strength compared to other top brands. It would be interesting to compare some half pans to the tubes to see if the results are better. The azo yellow is nice though, and pops against the other colors. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thanks for saving me some money.

      I am glad it helped! From all accounts the half pan sets rewet more easily and the tubes should be used as wet paint, not poured and dried. I am SO glad I didn't spend $200+ on these, haha! 😂

    Thank you for being honest about how they handled! And the non-rewetting issue is huge! I'm a newbie to watercolor but I love da vinci and just got 2 tubes of Daniel smith that I enjoy. I think I'll stick with those for a while. If I spend money on something new, I think it will be sennelier. 🙂

    Ah, I was so excited when I saw your thumbnail today! Oh my goodness - the Cobalt Violet Light - just wait 'til you see my video this Friday. Boy oh boy. My mouth literally dropped open momentarily when you swatched the sparkly paint on the black paper. What a difference! The photos you took are beautiful - I see many nice paintings in your future. Very interesting what you thought about the paints. Good to know. My Rembrandt pan set re-wets really easily, so I wonder if the binder is slightly different in the pans versus the tubes? Good thing you bought them on discount!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому +3

      I was thinking of you when I was swatching mine, and that the ready made half pan set seems to rewet more easily. I think it is like Winsor & Newton where the formulas for tubes vs pans is considerably different, and the tubes are meant to be used wet rather than letting them dry. Cobalt Violet...so pretty....so treacherous, lol! Thank you - I am looking forward to watching your video a bit later today when I get some chill out time, yay!

    Hi, Becky. I'm not sure how I managed to miss this a year ago, but you've just saved me a lot of money and heartache. I've been looking at Rembrandt and wondering, and now I wonder no more. I'm not in any hurry, anyway, as I have a decent stock of my colours in the paint drawer at the moment.
    I have the buff titanium in my Jackson's basket, but seeing it here, it will now be removed. I wonder why Winsor and Newton don't do one? Hey, ho, I'll do without it for now and go on mixing a touch of titanium white for muting my colours for the painted houses here. I was attracted to the Buff Titanium because it granulates, and that would have been helpful...
    Thanks again, Becky! I'll come back and watch the painting section later, as I'm supposed to be doing something else right now, and I've finished my cup of tea ...

    I have 6 tubes of Rembrandt. They pour up in pans fine here. But our humidity here is atrocious. We have small dehumidifiers in all the closets & big one we roll from room to room in the summer. Even my few Qor tubes won't dry in a pan. So if you ever decide to get rid of the Rembrandt contact me first!😉

    Coming back an hour later, I've just watched the painting part. When you said, "Stuffy", I smiled and thought, "Old-fashioned, story-book, Granny-ish?" She was always round, and kind, understanding and smiling, but staid, calm and sensible. The elements missing in these paints, perhaps?
    (I'm great-great-granny age - my youngest great-great nephew is under five - I'm all of the above, but also, essentially adventurous, curious and joyous! Adults tend to eye me warily if they don't know me well, children and animals love me without question (sooo precious to me!!!).
    Anyway, back to the painting: at 17:47 the lotus flower was jumping off the page to me, but the end result, when it was dry, was disappointingly dull. Compared to the Van Gogh made it even sadder! Just a thought: have you tried them on a different paper since then?
    Even so, it's cured my curiosity about them. I did buy the Rembrandt sepia a while ago, and used it a couple of times, but as my plein air experiment so far has mostly been pencil and watercolour pencil (wet and dry) I haven't given it a fair trial yet. I have some W&N sepia, which love, but curiosity after an ArtTube video drove the purchase of the Rembrandt. At least it wasn't expensive at the time I bought it. 😄

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Рік тому

      Stuffy...yes maybe grannyish, or very starched shirt conservative type. I need to give these paints another chance and spend more time with them. When I was in Greece I picked up a half pan set of Rembrandts which were in a beautiful wooden box and I couldn't resist them. I'm hoping to test those out soon, and it will be interesting to compare pan with tube formula to see if they perform the same or are slightly different (like Winsor & Newton). I'll be testing them on a different paper as well. My Etchr sketchbook completely died during filming this week so I'm going to have to abandon it and start in a fresh cotton book. I have a few vids which I'm making at the same time so I'm not sure in which order they'll appear.

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas Рік тому

      @@BeckyTregear There's some lovely work in that book, Becky. A pest that the paper finally gave up in the middle of filming, though. I'll look forward to seeing you using that 'Greece Set''' and seeing if there's a difference, cos under every 'starched / stuffed shirt a heart still beats, even though the stuffed shirt can be incredibly frustrating in some circumstances, so maybe there'll be hope for those tubes. Maybe stir a minute drop of glycerine into the hard-to-wet ones before leaving to dry another time?
      Pan v poured tubes: It's puzzled me since seeing so many artists struggling with this. I've used W&N poured tubes ever since I discovered they were cheaper than pans, so probably around 1998? Using them is no different from using the not-poured W&N pans in my play palette. But I'm also puzzled that that some ArtTubers find both hard to rewet. I think that may be down to climate?
      Maybe it's all down to familiarity with a brand? We have _way_ too much choice these days! I'm cautious about commenting too much, as my not having the budget to experiment much between brands these days, and don't get to places where freebies are given out limits my present-day experience. I have tried other brands, though. There are three Schmincke (from tubes) and a White Knights in that play palette, though, as well as that poured Rembrandt sepia, and I don't notice a difference in wetting between the two. I haven't used them enough yet to have thoughts on the paint comparisons.
      I'm talking too much again (!!!) and work is calling! Oops!!! A bientôt. 😊

      White watercolour has more finely ground pigments the white gouache. They are same ingredients more or less, pigment size is the deciding factor and bigger pigments are more opaque, but professional gouache will have varying transparency just like watercolour. Professional gouache is also single pigment or without white pigment, white is often added as filler is cheaper gouache. (exceptions in professional e.g. Pastel colours).

      What Margaret said about gouache! 😂 I wouldn't mind trying the dusk colours, but for now I don't see me buying more Rembrandts unless I find them for cheap prices again. I'm pretty sure that was a one time thing! The Blue Lotus gardens are very nice, but they're only open to the public from December 26 to maybe April each year. They're just outside of Warburton. 😊

    I saw another youtuber who suggested a ruffing up your palette with a mr clean eraser or the like to keep it from beading up.
    Apparently giving your palette a good scrub with alcohol works too. Sorry for all the edits. I’m a bit brain foggy today.

    Rembrandt work on Saunders Waterford and Fabriano Artistico Mould made natural tone paper. On others, especialy on Arches or Hahnemuhle, none will like these watercolors. All brands work differently, paper is the no1 important factor, on watercolor painting!

      no they are quite different, the interference and metallics are made of mica and are "pearlescent/metallic" . Spark and chameleon are unique in that they are glass particles so they "glitter/sparkle" vs "sheen/shimmer" , you will notice a big difference in how they reflect light

    Hi Becky! I don't have these paints, but maybe the reason why they dry like that and it seams so difficult to rewet it's because they are very old and have been badly storaged? As you said, weather is important. I have seen other reviews and they look very good. Please, check out the video series about this brand on Mandy's youtube channel: ua-cam.com/video/j14X8HAs49I/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MandyvanGoeije She is a fantastic artist and have some very interesting videos talking about Rembrandt watercolour paints. PV14 is a genuine cobalt based pigment. It's a heavyweight pigment with large particles, it's also expensive. Those are the reasons why it's so problematic. But still it's beautiful

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah I made a mistake on that one, had it confused with another paint in my collection that was a hue! And yes, it is hugely problematic. 😂

    • @alylyu3659
      @alylyu3659 2 роки тому

      Right, it's expencive so some manufactures add more binder to it to keep prices sane :) It's also heavy, hence the trouble keeping consistency smooth in the wet paint. Still, it's a beautiful shade of rose-violet colour and it granulates nicely

  • @Bonnie10au
    @Bonnie10au 2 роки тому

    I can hear your disappointment about the paints in your voice. I haven't tried Rembrandt yet, but I felt the same way when I bought the Art Spectrum paints. They are very vibrant and lovely but when they dry in the palette most of them crack, very very badly. By adding glycerin I didn't make it much better. I mean they work fine (except of the Ultramarine Blue which is gummy, like working with glue and unusable), but I hate the look of the dried paints. It makes the palette so ugly. This never happens with my Schmincke paints.
    So different problem but I can imagine how disappointed you are.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому +1

      Oh I totally understand that! My Art Spectrum set is looking pretty battered, though I have managed to minimise the cracking on most of them. But definitely other paints just look so much nicer, don't they? Oh well, I guess we can't love everything!
