Rembrandt watercolors are excellent, and they are quite affordable here in Germany. I also think that out of all the brands that I can think of, Rembrandt makes the best color choices in their smaller sets. They also have a single pigment and granulating set that I would love to buy. Unfortunately all of their sets include a real sable brush, which means that I will not be purchasing any of them, ever.
Five years later as I watch this but I just got this set yesterday and the tin was finished on the edges. It seems a nicer quality tin than the W & N. I wanted these when I first started watercolour because I have their pastels and love them. But they were a huge outlay here in Australia so I went for the W & N Professional 24 set instead. I have since picked them up cheaper because they were on sale at Jackson’s. I avoided Jackson’s at first because I expected shipping to be expensive but it was very reasonable. Plus the Rembrandt tubes are much cheaper than the W & N there!
I spoke to Schmincke - the razor sharp edges are NOT a design fault BUT they were not aware how sharp they were. Hopefully they will improve the design ;)
Talens have updated their Rembrandt collection and added more bright and transparent single pigment colors and I see more bright reds in it now. maybe you can keep this set all Rembrandt this way...
I'd love to get a must have list of each brand of watercolors... If you were to buy a minimal palette for travel, which colors would you get?? Which is your favorite red, blue, yellow, green, etc from this palette? And possibly a more ambitious video... your holy grail watercolors. Your favorite colors across all brands and all colors, if you were to pull individual colors for a palette, what would you fill it with. love your reviews!!! But my favorite videos are your 3-5 color watercolor tutorials. It really challenges me to mix my own colors and gets me more familiar with colors. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Thank you, I just recently purchased this set and am happy to learn what you thought about it, and to see some comparisons. I love your beautiful rose bookmark. 🌸
Just looked on Amazon currently the prices show much higher, glad you found a good price and showed them to us. The layering on the peach showed me they are very good paint. Thanks
I'm glad you mentioned Van Gogh paints in your summary. I found some in a bargain bin at a local art store and like them very much. I'll be using them in particular as my Daniel Smith 5-ml starter set runs out, and highly recommend them. It's also funny you mentioned wanting a palette with "all" the colors in one place. I just decided to put together a palette like that for myself. I bought a $20 palette that comes with 24 full pans, and put together a plan for myself that will use about 16 full pans and 12 half pans with room for a few more, so I'll have my almost all of my colors ready to go at any time. (I have all tube paints, so I will fill the pans from my tubes, leaving out some that are very similar to each other but keeping them for use in the studio.) I have 13 (!) different brands of paint, a few tubes of each, so this will let me mix and match as needed, and change it up as time goes on. I've also mixed up some of my own "convenience" mixes for olive greens and purples that I use a lot, which I have put in half pans as well (after writing down the formula). It is fun to be able to customize the palette to be "me!"
Thanks for the review. Due to extenuating circumstances, I ended up buying a 12 pan set of Rembrandt watercolor pans cold turkey on a vacation at a local art store; that's what they had. I really like them and was hoping you would do a review so I could see how they compared to other watercolor paints. So, thanks again!
This is the first time that living in the Netherlands is a good thing for price haha. We can get them for like 1/4th of the Amazon price. Thanks for the review!
Joline - yeah i m also glad to be able to get them so much cheaper then people that don t live in the netherlands lol. They are reasonable priced here. But they ahould be less expensive in the US to. So others could afford them to!
I have swatched the entire new collection, Lindsey and I can say the new reds are smashing!!! I am currently editing the swatching vids. They will be online this weekend, hopefully even this evening.
I know, I hate it when they jack up the price once an item becomes popular. They did that with the big sheets of Arches paper too! I put items I am interested in in my "saved for later" basket and keep an eye on them.
There is also great website for price-watching Amazon called CamelCamelCamel.com . They will alert you whenever an item's price falls to a level specified by you. That is how I got the Arches paper which never stayed in stock for more than a day or two.
I love to see the comparison, I was wondering about all the different paints. I am so new to watercoloring, but I can tell the difference between $4.00 sets and $40.00 sets. Same with paper. When you are just learning, and the paint won't work good(like it gets globby) it can make you think, you may be the problem, and it really might be the paint/paper. Thanks Lindsay for all the time you put into these reviews!
I really love your reviews! They're so thorough and informative! I have a 12 half pan Schmincke Horadam watercolors and I have Been absolutely loving them! I'm beginner in watercolor but I decided to invest in professional colors after being dissapointed in the winsor & newton cotman pocket plus set and especially the color selection in that particular set. I haven't been dissapointed in my decision as I absolutely love the Schmincke! Keep up the great work!
I've made my own pallets and yes, they are a mixture of brands. I cannot love just one brand. I actually have five 48 pan pallets in descending orders of "love" and of tubes vs. pre-made pans.
Wow thanks a lot for the comparisons. Please show us more of your wonderful paintings. I love love love the peach 🍑 and water droplets on it. It’s gorgeous
I second using Jacksonsart in the U.K. Great prices on W&N, Rembrandt and Sennelier. Takes longer obviously but I've used them before and the shipping is super low to free depending on the size of the order. Personally I'm eyeing the 24 half pan set rather than the 48.
I would love to see a tutorial on the peach too. It looks so real!! The stem and leaf are beautiful too. If you do a tutorial please show the leaf and stem also. Thank you for all of your wonderful, helpful videos.
Hey Lindsay, I just wanna tell u, winsor& newton profession watercolor is wayyyyy much cheaper in China, if u travel to China someday, make sure you buy a lot of watercolor paints, you will be surprise. And I love all your reviews and demonstrations, I love U!!!
Hey Lindsay...I love your watercolor reviews...I am confused between buying van Gogh and Rembrandt, could you please suggest on this... especially considering the quality and transpancy of paints. Thanks
Yes of course! Rembrandt is the professional range and will have more pigment and less fillers than the van gogh. The van gogh is really good tho but I prefer the rembrandt.
you can switch with the senneliers really red in the set, that makes a lovely red for your warm and cold reds, however it is more on the neutral red, but still more red in same quality as sennelier has the opposite issue in the reds in their palette, lol
Hi Lindsey. I predominantly glaze. I would very much appreciate if you would give more of your observations of comparing the Rembrandt to the Sennelier in that respect?? This would be very valuable info!! Also - the Peach is gorgeous and the fuzz effect is exquisite. Maybe do a tutorial on the peach using the Sennelier - then we'd have a sided by side comparison of the glazing - lol! TFS
+Mare MaGoo I found them to be quite similar to Sennelier in the glazing respect. They have a lovely luminosity and tinting strength. Once you get into the professional ranges in watercolor the differences become really subtle, kinda like personalities and you just get along better with some paints....unfortunately I get along with too many lol!
THANKS LINDSAY! I'M SUPER EXCITED - THIS SET IS ON ITS WAY TO ME, on sale at Jackson's $136. I can't wait! I know I already have too many palettes, but what can I say? I'm in love and need it!
Yes yes yes yes, I was waiting for an actual review of the 48 Rembrandt set for a long time now. I have heard they're transparent and good for layering. Not to mention all the awesome single pigments in the set. I was on the fence on whether to buy them of not, so thanks for the review.
Thanks Lynsay, your reviews have saved me a lot of money over the years. I always catch them, as sometimes you have brought a brand up that I've been thinking about buying. Great review Bevanna UK
I know you have painted peaches before...but I dont think just a single peach like this one...please paint this..the same way and techniques..its so nice and perfect!!
Hello from South Africa Linsay. Please, please do a tutorial on the peach. I just wanted to take a bite especially as they are out of season here. Love Elizabeth
Is it me or the Rembrandts are underrated? Im not a professional buteven if I was, the only paints I could afford, are a mix of Van Goghs and Rembrandts. I chose the best from both brands and as I write this down,Im ready to order 10 more colours. Never had a problem eith these. Actually they are more than enough for sketching and doing illustrations.
Those rose pictures are simply beautiful. Rembrandt is really popular here (in Ukraine where we are missionaries) but they are expensive even here, in Europe. Cheaper than in the States, but still...
Thank you for this review! After a lot of researches, I just can't decide between Sennelier and Rembrandt... You said in your video that they are both great, but would you mind telling me one or two differences that would help me make a choice?
I am so glad you reviewed these, Lindsay. I just won set of 36 pans from WorldWaterColorMonth and I'm super excited. I'm a beginner and my best paints so far are Cotmans, so I'm really looking forward to trying this brand.
Great review Lindsay, thank you so much. I haven't tried these yet but now I'm intrigued. I'll wait until there's a good deal on them. Love the peach ! Would appreciate a tutorial. 💞💫
I enjoy all of your reviews. I haven’t been painting only a couple of years. I have many brands and now know I want a paint without honey. I actually enjoy my Van Gogh and Paul Reuben next up my white nights. My pure pigment Mijellio are sticky to the extreme. So my question to you after having these for a while to you enjoy just as much or do you wish Daniel Smith made a 48 pan set? Thsnks
Love your videos. I just watched your watercolor set tour. I was wondering if you’ve ever tried Mungyo watercolors and if you could do a review. I bought the 24 and then the 48 after trying them. I would love to hear your opinion of them.
I just bought the 48 Rembrandt set on Jackson's for $132.21. A hack of deal! It is not available on Amazon. And the 24 set on Amazon is sold as much as what I paid for the 48.
Ok, you know we are all going to ask for the peach tutorial right? So, please, please, please do the peach tutorial, please! Please, with a peach on top! Thanks for sharing!
how do rembrand paints compare to white nights (you call them yarka)? i mean not a swatch, but working with them. is there any significant differences, maybe colors differ drastically, which can not be told looking at screen? thanks
Honestly there is not a ton of difference. There seems to be more expensive pigments used in the rembrandt set I have but as far as vibrancy they are very similar. The White Nights are a better value (more paint for less money) but the rembrandt have more of a traditional earthy feel to them. They are both good brands though, the rembrandts is a bit better quality but when you get into the professional ranges of paints the differences are very minute.
Hi Lindsay! I always enjoy your watercolour reviews!! I know that the M. Graham colors are your favorite, but have you ever made a review video for them? You must have use them so many times in a painting so I guess you are the perfect person to make a review video of them. If you haven't, would you please made them? That one I would REALLY want to watch. Thankful for you and your videos.. such a treat everytime I see your new videos in my feed 💙 hugs and much love from I Indonesia!!
just rewatched your swatch but the rembrandt carmine looks like a maroon red/brown just me being picky on the verge of splurging my birthday money on some more paints lol but since i discovered sennelier i barely touched anything else. So if I am snobby on my snooping for paints wich act like senneliers, sorry :P
Thank you so much! I've been stalking this set, and you've helped me greatly. Love that you pointed out the "samsies". You're absolutely right. So a smaller set perhaps, may be a better investment, for me. A definite "newbie". I have too many supplies as is, so I'll wait! You are so thorough! And man you can speak fast! Are you from the Northeast? This is how we all speak! Again, THANKS a bunch! Also love the blog! 💛❤️💛
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich ahhhh, a "Mainer". Awesomeness! My sweet cousin is up in Maine, and I've not been for many years. I' grew up south of Maine, in CT, ...now in NJ. 😢I'd much rather be back home, anywhere in New England! Thanks for your very insightful videos!
Lindsay I realize this is not a question about this video but I have a question that I am hoping you can answer. Can mica designed for candle making and make-up be used and mixed with an acrylic medium and used to paint with? I was thinking along the lines of using it for fluid painting. I was also, wondering how colourfast the makeup mica would be compared to premixed paint.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich thank you so much. I love your channel and all that you bring to it. Thank you for the time and talent you share with us all. 🙃
Hi Lindsay, I have an offtopic question but I'd like to know your opinion on Derwent Artists colored pencils. I've seen a set at a very good price but I'd like to know if they're any good before I buy them. Thank you :)
+serenity2288 the dewent artist line are a harder and drier pencil similar to Soho from Jerry's artarama (made by creatacolor) they resist breaking and have good pigment load. I prefer Derwent coloursoft as they are soft and creamy but it I'd more about what you want in a pencil.
got this set for something like 80euros on this side of a pond. love em. guess Royal Talens have heard you, and changed quite a few of the colours, including my favorite raw umber. it's being replaced by a new one, hope not a greener one. if that is of interest to you here's broshure www.royaltalens.com/media/9122758/88051014_rembrandt_aquarel_0519_eng_lowres.pdf
Excellent video, one I've been waiting for someone to do for a long time. The swatch chart is shown really well so will enable me to choose the colours I want to try out. I would love to have seen them compared to the Talens Van Gogh student line you have (and that I currently enjoy using a lot) to see the extent of difference. Thanks for taking the time:)
Didn't realise you have already done two demos with them (Roses and peaches) . I can see the working properties of the Rembrandts and how they may differ thank you!
but as you you know you can get away with 6 colours, a warm and cool blue, warm and cool red and warm and cool yellow which would teach your students how to mix every single colour theyii ever need.
Can you compare Rembrandt to Schmincke watercolor paints in pans? I am wondering which is better to purchase since I found them online in a similar price :)
+David Sakthivel they are both good, these seem to have a more earthy body to them, they feel more traditional to me where mission gold are really in your face vivid.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich they are nore traditional aa a basis for them.you are right. i guess cardmakers and art journals would be better off with the asian watercolors with super bright colors. But that also just deoends on budget and availability plus prices.
Hi Lindsay, first of all, I second Karem on being such a great teacher! And I wanted your thought on whether you would prefer the Rembrandts to M. Graham? Thanks for all you do for the art community!!! : )
No, this video is a couple years old. Another youtuber just reviewed this: Mandy van Goeije and she watched all current colors over several videos. Have a look:)
This was my first artist grade set. And to be honest, I don't like them. Their colors feels really "heavy" and some colors are really weakly pigmented. Also quite lot of mixes in they color range. And pans don't rewet well. My tin have that razor sharp edge. But I like more bright colors, so this set just wasn't for me. But they are much cheaper here, 133 usd in Jackson's art, normal price.
I think your video may have spike the sales because they are currently not available and the 'available from this sellers' link shows them at over $230; you are quite the influencer I believe! LOL
+Diana Nelson grrrr, I hate it when they jack up the price once something gets popular. Sorry about that. Keep an eye out it may drop again. I am glad I bought when I did!
Please do tutorial on the peach. Thanks for being such a wonderful teacher
Agreed!
Karem Mathes i agree
Hell yes :P the rose is awesome as well specially the one with the background
It'd be fun to see you put together a mixed brand palette of your very favorite colors, and see you play. Hint, hint. 🐱
I agree.
I'd love to see that too! Please do this Lindsay!

Yes,this would be very intersting..
Thanks for the tip about washing the palette with soap and water. I just got mine and yep, the paint was beading up. I am off to wash the white part.
Thanks for this review! It opened my eyes on how an artist looks at colors, too.
Thank you, I just recently purchased this set and am happy to learn what you thought about it, and to see some comparisons. I love your beautiful rose bookmark. 🌸
Just got this Rembrandt with 48 colors and the very good paint brush. I'm looking forward to trying more colors as I open the wrappers.
Hi Lindsay! I just purchased this set for an unbelievable $100 at Jacksons art supply! Woo hoo! Thank you for your passion and enthusiasm :)
I'm painting with most colors rembrandt mixed with some reds from schmincke and fragonard. I love all of them!!!

They are both good brands though, the rembrandts is a bit better quality but when you get into the professional ranges of paints the differences are very minute.
could you do a review on Derwent Inktense colored pencils??? that would be awesome..
That peach was so pretty!!!! Please do a tutorial on it :)
Thankful for you and your videos.. such a treat everytime I see your new videos in my feed 💙 hugs and much love from I Indonesia!!
thanks so much, I guess I should review them:)
Your paintings are just beautiful!
thats a big investment but I have one or two of them and am setting some cash to one side for maybe a 12 or 24 set. thanks for the video
just rewatched your swatch but the rembrandt carmine looks like a maroon red/brown just me being picky on the verge of splurging my birthday money on some more paints lol but since i discovered sennelier i barely touched anything else. So if I am snobby on my snooping for paints wich act like senneliers, sorry :P
red is also my favorite color ❤😊
Nice review as always Lindsey, one thing I noticed in the set is there are so many greens maybe to many
+Blissfulthings it depends on what you are painting I guess:)
but you sure got a great deal! 😎
Lindsay, when you order these Rembrandt on Amazon, did they ship from the UK?
Thank you so much! I've been stalking this set, and you've helped me greatly. Love that you pointed out the "samsies". You're absolutely right. So a smaller set perhaps, may be a better investment, for me. A definite "newbie". I have too many supplies as is, so I'll wait! You are so thorough! And man you can speak fast! Are you from the Northeast? This is how we all speak! Again, THANKS a bunch! Also love the blog! 💛❤️💛
yes Ma'am, Maine born and raised:)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich ahhhh, a "Mainer". Awesomeness! My sweet cousin is up in Maine, and I've not been for many years. I' grew up south of Maine, in CT, ...now in NJ. 😢I'd much rather be back home, anywhere in New England! Thanks for your very insightful videos!
Can you do a tutorial on the peach? Please?
Lindsay I realize this is not a question about this video but I have a question that I am hoping you can answer. Can mica designed for candle making and make-up be used and mixed with an acrylic medium and used to paint with? I was thinking along the lines of using it for fluid painting. I was also, wondering how colourfast the makeup mica would be compared to premixed paint.
+Karen Sisson it should be the same:)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich thank you so much. I love your channel and all that you bring to it. Thank you for the time and talent you share with us all. 🙃
Karen Sisson maybe you can buy them from a dutch online store like www.bol com ? ir a dutch art store online?
Thanks for Ur Video. So it seems Rembrandt is much better than W&N pro. ??
I prefer them but they are both good paint.
I prefer Derwent coloursoft as they are soft and creamy but it I'd more about what you want in a pencil.
actually that sounds perfect for me since I already have some soft and creamy pencils and would like to try something different as well :) thank you!
Wow, Lindsay, the peach looks amazing! It looked so realistic!
Between Sennelier or Rembrandt, which would you recommend?
both are good, equal quality, go for what fits your needs and budget:)
Ok Lindsay which would you buy if you only had a choice of Rembrandt or Sennelier? I am looking at both
They are both wonderful, equal in my eyes.
I agree, I would go with either. I personally love Sennelier!
Your peach looks good enough to eat! Great review as always, thx Lindsay 😊
Great review! Thanks
got this set for something like 80euros on this side of a pond. love em. guess Royal Talens have heard you, and changed quite a few of the colours, including my favorite raw umber. it's being replaced by a new one, hope not a greener one. if that is of interest to you here's broshure www.royaltalens.com/media/9122758/88051014_rembrandt_aquarel_0519_eng_lowres.pdf
Thanks for taking the time:)
the Rembrandt are stronger in color
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay thanks for that. Is there also a big difference between the clarity of the colours or is it negligible?
Didn't realise you have already done two demos with them (Roses and peaches) . I can see the working properties of the Rembrandts and how they may differ thank you!
They are now on Amazon for $243 for the 48.
but as you you know you can get away with 6 colours, a warm and cool blue, warm and cool red and warm and cool yellow which would teach your students how to mix every single colour theyii ever need.
I like to label the properties...the names are not that importen in the box for me. In my binder I list everything.
Can you compare Rembrandt to Schmincke watercolor paints in pans? I am wondering which is better to purchase since I found them online in a similar price :)
I have only used schminke in tubes so I cant say. They are both excellent quality. I'd go with the better value as prices vary worldwide.
@@thefrugalcrafter Okay, thanks for your opinion! Do you think a set of 24 or 36 is better for a beginner?
@@adriannamarszal honestly the 24 is probably better for a beginner
@@thefrugalcrafter Okay, thank you!
eh, most european brand paints' prices in here are almost standardised, at least their sets.
Hi ! Would you recommend this over the Mission Gold paints ? Thank you
+David Sakthivel they are both good, these seem to have a more earthy body to them, they feel more traditional to me where mission gold are really in your face vivid.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich I see ! Thank you so much .
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich they are nore traditional aa a basis for them.you are right. i guess cardmakers and art journals would be better off with the asian watercolors with super bright colors. But that also just deoends on budget and availability plus prices.
Hi Lindsay, first of all, I second Karem on being such a great teacher! And I wanted your thought on whether you would prefer the Rembrandts to M. Graham? Thanks for all you do for the art community!!! : )
+Susan Anthony I'd say they are on par but m Graham watercolors were my first and favorite artist grade paints;)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich thanks!
Hi is this a review of the new Rembrandt 2019?
No, this video is a couple years old. Another youtuber just reviewed this: Mandy van Goeije and she watched all current colors over several videos. Have a look:)
Great review...love reviews. TFS
But they are much cheaper here, 133 usd in Jackson's art, normal price.
huh, how long ago was that because I absolutely love these!
Not that long ago, I bought these 2014. But I may be little spoiled with Shcmincke Horadams and QoR watercolors super bright colors :D
That set is now $253!
Omg, 48 Rembrandt set...
I think your video may have spike the sales because they are currently not available and the 'available from this sellers' link shows them at over $230; you are quite the influencer I believe! LOL
OMG! CHATTY KATHY!
You speak so fast that I had to check if the speed multiplier was activated XD
these are no longer available at that price.. shame
You are so kind to Rembrandt watercolors. Buy da Vinci...enough said.
Wtf!... Amazon now wants 250 bucks for those that's freaking ridiculous, I think I'll pass
+Diana Nelson grrrr, I hate it when they jack up the price once something gets popular. Sorry about that. Keep an eye out it may drop again. I am glad I bought when I did!
It's 179 at the moment... =/
