I've had a few nice pairs of Salomons since I got into skating, really really love the tech and the features. Easily better than a lot of other skates on the market. I've got a narrow foot and the M12s just fit me better, but I keep coming back to Salomons.
Totally agree, at first you want to write off salo`s due to age and mentioned perm wear to royal groove. Running Adapt Sym souls is a great way to avoid this, made them a go to afterwards. Any plans on trying some 3D printed Salo souls with a royal groove? They don't require any modding like it takes to get Adapt or Remz souls on. My ST Ones and ST90s still running strong after plenty of ledge abuse! Great vid, thanks for sharing!
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it. I've thought about adapt souls but after my first attempt at usd carbon souks didn't go do well I'm not inclined to butcher another pair! I would love to try King souls but after 18 months of waiting i asked for a refund. If the price of the 3d printed ones comes down a bit ill definitely give those a bash though 👍
There's a lot to be said for narrow skates (in terms of the backslide area) that force you to get really boot down. For one, your foot is a lot closer to the ledge so it's less complicated muscle memory wise. But also, being so far booted down makes you way less likely to get wheel bite or slip out in the other direction - as in there is a massive difference between a frontside and a Royale, not a little one. This forces us to do them properly, hopping on boot down from the start. It also makes is very hard to come out of the boot down position (meaning it's easier to slide longer, tho maybe that also makes them a little harder for complicated switchups?)... Sals are a little overkill on the boot down angle, but not by a ton. Lowering the shock aborber height some relieves the angle slightly as well... I've still got ST90s, though these days I'm on Factions, but I dremeled the soul plate into a very similar angle in the Royale area as the Sals have.
You found pure gold with those shocks being intact mate. I agree with you 100% this setup with the solas is amazing. I skate the same setup. I did notice you struggled with backside full torque/ farv, it’s the one trick I struggle with on these for some reason

I've just found a set of Rob Thompson Salomon in my size on eBay and I had to grab them. Probably going to get some 80mm frames for them at some point as I still have my USD Farmer Sway for the skatepark. Love the videos mate, keep up the good work. Still regret selling my Vinny Minton 1 when I was younger.

I want my Salomons back. I had the st9’s back in 98/99 ish. My sister sold them at a car boot but still hasn’t admitted it. I bought a pair of sl1’s about 6/7 years ago and I remember them sounding tappy on landings etc. I wonder if it’s the ufc design that causes this as it’s not moulded to the soul like they used to be??
Yeah they are a great skate even after removing the nostalgia factor. You can still pick up good pairs on ebay pretty cheap. I bought a mint pair of st10s for £90 late last year 👌
I've tried Salo's thrice in recent years after having ST80s and the ST Minton's when they first came out and I wasn't loving them as much as I remember.. a big BUT though, this was because I realised I can actually downsize quite a bit into 7.5/8 (26/26.5) so I think I will try that size if I can find them but not desperate. The new Rollerblade Solo skate is due soon and those felt quite similar, very similar boot shape and it looks as if they've slimmed down the soul plates too which is good news
Yeah I think I could definitely go down a size I mine. Its just so hard to fund decent liners. Looking forward to the RB skate, I loved my TRS back in the day!
@@chrischadwick1 True, intuitions were ok but my feet are so thin I felt like they never really locked into the skate.. though, with an extra downsize it would probably be fine
@@chrischadwick1 I used the V2's. The Salo shell is kinda roomy on the top I guess and the liner is pretty thin so it felt like there was some empty space the liner was slipping around into no matter how tight I tied the laces. I skated them with the additional cuff wraps to fill out some shell but it was around the top of the foot and toe box that was too roomy for me. I think if you have a bulkier foot or downsized then it'd work a treat, or maybe some thick insoles to fill the space (although that takes away from how low profile the skates feel so I never do that).
Yeah so I ordered UFS bolt receivers from Loco. I then marked the spacing on the base of the boot using salomon soul plates and then started with a hole thar was too small and worked my way up to make sure I didn't make the hole too big 👍
I always wanted these skates as a kid.. could never afford them! I heard Salomon lost the molds so they couldn't even re-release the skate if they wanted to. Sucks. Great review, though! :D

As a distinctly average skater it was very meh 🤷♂️ I mean they're okay, but I find all my skates are okay.
