- The New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara are at a standoff for now, but getting a contract extension done is the logical next step. Kamara has no guarantees in his deal for next year and is therefore playing on the final year of his agreement. If he wants more guarantees and to stick around here in New Orleans, the team should be willing to get that done just like they did with Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis.
Derek Carr does it again to wrap up minicamp, leading what would have been a game-winning drive against Marshon Lattimore and the Saints otherwise solid defensive performance.

I am going to go ahead and give my opinion on the AK situation before I listen to your take Ross. I’d be fine extending his current deal one more year and push out the void year, guarantee more of the remaining deal, and sweeten the pot by adding a little more to it. Even though the PC, Doug marone system didn’t benefit AK, that can’t be the reason to give him a substantially better deal than what I described above when you consider he will be 29 at the beginning of the season and do we know for sure he has the gas left to put up better numbers than what we’ve seen the last two seasons. I would be cautious and still try to be respectful to AK.

Although I agree with your take Ross, I think the timing isn't good for Kamara!! He's coming off a bad year statistically after missing nearly half the season on suspension for nearly beating a guy to death. I mean he could been kicked out the league and got serious jail time. Then he follows that up with not showing up to the voluntary mini camps. That would make any organization hesitant on committing a lot of years and money to an ageing possible off the field liability. I really like Kamara, but to me after the past year he had I would have waited to ask for an extension. I hope it all works out, but if the team had reservations I would understand!
Waited until when exactly? This is his final year because the Saints aren't paying him $22.4 million next year. Also, he was suspended three games last season...
He never comes to voluntary camp never has his whole career and he’s missed 3 games last year for the offseason fight….2nd he was the only player last year that wasn’t throwing the OC oline or qb under the bus as a player he’s always been positive about the team and wanting to finish here. The saints have given players that wasn’t as productive as Ak has been extended. I’d rather do a restructure and add years with production incentives/ bonuses for games played rushing and receiving yards and TDs

We need team first mentality and not give me a new contract in case I'm hurt so I can get paid and have the Saints be on the hook. I get the love from the fans but it's a business at the end of the day and he hasn't shown that he is the veteran leader this team needs. Not showing up to voluntary OTA with a new offensive scheme sets the team back whether anybody likes it or not. WhoDat!!!
He’s not likely looking for a whole new deal just an extension that will guarantee some portion of his remaining deal that’s not currently. He’s under contract through the 2025 season with a void year in 2026. They could extend him into 26, have a void year in 27 and, add say a million to the current deal and guarantee say 12 million of the remaining deal. This should be doable without costing the team anymore than what’s in his current contract besides maybe a slight amount for show.
@Nickydafish but just because it isn't a whole new deal, doesn't it still make it a new deal due to the extension being added even if that was agreed to later? Either way, I think the organization might be heading in a new direction based on his suspension last year alone. That costed the Saints 6 games I think. Who knows? They probably would've built chemistry and momentum sooner had he been there instead of on suspension. I think any organization looks at that and sees it as a red flag and might not be as gungho to pull the trigger on offering a new deal. I don't know. Just my thoughts. Sometimes superstar players are viewed more of a potential loss than a potential gain. See Stefon Diggs.

Or trade him for draft capital, sign Kareem Hunt, and draft an RB in the second round next year. I'm like this, extending an RB at 29 is risky as it is because once they get past 30, either the player has pedestrian stats or is on the decline.
Nah he’s been used tragic the last two seasons… I think extending him until 31 isn’t the worst thing.
Plus, Williams needs to prove his 17 TD season was full birthday, and Kendre needs to be well, healthy
Until the last couple weeks Kamara was the highest paid RB in the league. Yet his production is nowhere near #1. He is nearing 30 the wall is nigh. Just say no to being hijacked by aging RBs. I love you Ross, but you are wrong. No one wants to hear it, but if you want to get younger you have to get younger. Personally, I don't trust his mindset.

I think a lot of yall forgot what it was like before Duce McAllister. When we didn’t have a good running back. We’ve been spoiled with good running backs since. Kamara has broken most of not all of the records held by any saints running back in many categories. He is very much still the running back he has always been. The only decline was last year when you didn’t know how to utilize him. Better keep him because most of the running backs they have now haven’t shown a full season of star play anywhere.

Kamara has not been used properly for his skill set the past two seasons. He will be used correctly under Kubiak. I think there isn't a team in the NFL who wouldn't want to have Kamara on their roster.

Ross, how do you know what Kamara wants? You say he just wants the same money but guaranteed, but we don’t know that. He could be asking for a better deal money wise. If were as simple as you’re making it out to be, the deal would be done by now.
More so extrapolating from the examples we've seen around the league. With new years will always come new money. But it's been no mystery what running backs have been asking for in the last five or six years of the league.

He’s the second highest paid running back in the NFL. There is no reason for the team to extend a 30 year old running back.

He's likely not asking to reset the market. Also look at the way he was used those three years and how that coincides with the lack of production. Numbers aren't the whole story.
