Since you've mentioned it's one of the first things you read when you got into comics, would you be interested in talking about Cable & Deadpool in the future?

@CasuallyComics May I suggest the chimmichanga joke? It's my favorite scene in that run, and it morphed into one of the most obnoxious running jokes in Deadpool's long list of running jokes.

Considering all the skewering and chopping these two do to each other, and that they talk about still feeling pain despite their healing factors, it still feels like they have fun fighting each other in a way no other comic characters do. I mean, not like Wolverine would ever admit it.

I always laugh at the scene in X-Force Vol 3 when they're in the future trying to find Cable and Wolverine stabs Deadpool through the head and Deadpool asks if he's a telepathy now because he can feel him in his brain.

At the time this issue came out, it was kind of infamous. Several of Vanessa’s poses were directly copied from Jim Lee’s Wild Cats art. It was referenced multiple times in a Wizard magazine article published later. Afraid I don’t remember the Wizard magazine issue number.

This is the Deadpool that's always stuck in my mind. I was irked they disregarded the Circle Chase, but not super surprised. He was a good villain in those days.

I've gotten pretty burned out on Deadpool in general. But if I had to choose between this version and the non stop Looney Tunes version I would go with this. He has been Flanderized.

I remember seeing the book cover on the stand in 94. I had to have it. I still have that copy. I was a big WildC.A.T.s fan at that time too and noted the first Zealot appearance stance "copied" by Copycat.

I was a Deadpool early adopter, peacing out when he became too wacky and ubiquitous. I remember loving this when this came out; this Deadpool told his jokes with a sneer, never too far from being downright menacing.
I’ve always wondered if that Porky Pig homage was inspiration for “Widdle Wade” in Joe Kelly’s run.

Lettering isn't discussed enough and I hope you'll keep drawing attention to it. Back in the 80s, I was a big fan of John Workman's lettering.

I use movie/TV production analogies when explaining comics to people who don't read them. Lettering is the sound mixing, and like audio, you only really notice when it's very bad or very good, but it's mostly just in the background unless you look for it. Truly underappreciated.

I think the cover is referenced in an actual comic fight. It was one of their rematches in a Deadpool storyline. Deadpool was hallucinating some random woman and Doctor Bong pr Bell or whatever thought that fighting Wolverine would bring a revelation. The fight ended with Wolverine skewering Wade in a similar manner to the iconic cover. I don’t remember the exact number but it’s the one where Deadpool does a shoryuken on Kitty

    Two things:
    1. Yes, an´t believe we thought the 90´s style in comics was so cool when now it looks so dated. More son than previous times.
    2. Anyone remember when, as kids, we´d bring the comics to school (or whatever), and talk about how amazing it was that said thing happen in the comics? They were part of our regular lives.

I HAD this one.... I was a big Wolvie fan and was collecting his issues at the time. The issue (for me,... "mileage will vary," lol) was solid. It did give me the impression that Wade could be a serious threat, if not the most stable one. I also have a fondness for all the Kuberts (Joe, Andy, and Adam), but I will admit... it was so VERY 90s.... especially 90s X-series. But I liked it. It definitely planted that see in me that Wade was not dumb.... crazy maybe,... but not dumb. I didn't really realize at the time that was the first time Logan had really met him up to that point, what with Deadpool having been an X-villain for at least a few years by that point... This video also gave me so much nostalgia for that era of Wolvie. I actually really enjoyed his adamantium-less period, and would have been okay with him being without it for longer. It gave us better insight into how his powers really worked, and how much pain he always fought thru to be the man he was. I could go on gushing about this issue and the era some more, but I think I'll leave it there. LOVED the video

As far as DP kicking Copycat in the face, if you're in that line of work, EXPECT TO GET KICKED IN THE FACE! By anyone, anytime. Don't hand me that "I'm a weak, widdle woman" magilla.
If she'd been a CIVILIAN, that'd be one thing. But if you're Copycat, Shadowcat, She-Hulk, Titania, or Elektra, expect to get a faceful of pain at any given moment.
And then give as good as you get.

As a 90's kid I'm totally getting this facsimile. The 90's art style is kind of refreshing. A lot of today's marvel art is heavily influenced by animation. And I like it better when comics are their own thing.

1:33 art is subjective of course, but I agree with your assessment of this alternate cover swapping the two characters. In fact, imo it’s quite awful. What is going on with Wolverine’s mask at the bottom? When has it ever looked like that. Bizarre.

    • @Akkbar21
      @Akkbar21 3 місяці тому

Oh. It’s the marks on his shoulders. That’s why the color swap is such a mistake. It makes the drawing unintelligible to the point where I thought those were part of his mask. Made it look like Sunfire’s mask almost

While I appreciate that the seeds for the long-running dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine are clearly there in this issue, I'm more disappointed that over the course of the _movies_ that Morena Baccarin's adaptation of Vanessa hasn't exhibited any of the Copycat powers so far. I was expecting even just one scene where the camera zooms in on her face, her eyes go fully black, then she copies some power from memory, maybe Wade's heightened reflexes or something, uses it briefly to fight, only to then get stomped by Gina Carano's Angel Dust and put into the capsule.
Also, in my eyes Garrison Kane has been and always will be a perennial jobber. XD

Deadpool threatening to kill his ex and her new boyfriend, while the story is actually all about Wolverine, really highlights how the 90s was the decade of casual domestic violence.

I remember reading this at the library in the trade, Vol. 8 or something, and I wasn't sure if this was the first time they fought or not lol. It's a shame it was when Wolverine had bone claws, since they're not as iconic as his metal claws, but oh well. I kind of liked Larry Hama's take on Deadpool, it wasn't "wacky" or "annoying" necessarily.

Another great review and analysis. First, yeah I also love lettering. It can add so much to both the art and the story. And second, generally, I loath the "good guys meet up and have a mild disagreement so of course they have to fight to the death now" trope. But, Deadpool wasn't really a "good guy" (still really isn't), and Wolverine has always only been one... barely. But I think the shtick works for them.

Larry Hama does NOT get the reverence he deserves.. He rightfully belongs on Mt.Rushmore of comics… I do not think many in modern comics values his contributions as they do Mcfarlane, Lee, and Liefeld. GenX lived thru Real-Life of all the above and it was Hama who even those looked up too . What people forget is how “ professional “Hama was as a writer… how his runs on GIJoe, Wolverine, and Punisher was written with a character’s character in mind. How he was able to bring reader up to speed… even if you knew nothing about character ( as with his latest run on Iron Fist) … so kiddos… Larry Hama is amazing and should be more recognized
