Yara Flor is an underrated character who has a lot of potential; however, she’s just going to appear in cameos, teamups, and backgrounds in many DC titles just like a lot of Wonder Woman supporting characters and legacies because a lot of writers and editors don’t know what to do with the Wonder Woman family.
As messy as it was implemented, Yara Flor sort of had history/report with Jon Kent. Now Trinity supposedly has a history with Jon and Damian that's pulled out of nowhere. DC's having problems with their new legacy heroes.
I just read read the first few issues of her Wonder Girl debut and I really liked it. I think everyone gives up on Diana's supporting cast too quickly. I'm hoping at least the Esquecidas are established in Gunn's DCU so she can get more mainstream attention and make a real return.
Brazilian here. I like that they used Brazilian folklore in her book. But then they said screw it, and threw her in a story with Greek mythological beings. Also, not hiring Brazilian writers was notable at times, when she spoke portuguese with either horrible grammar, or sayings that don’t even exist 😂
Yeah, Brazilian mythology/folklore is untouched in popular culture and Yara could've been a great gateway into that world. The fact that it's also not so well recorded and the information that is there is scarce, all it needs is a good writer to expand upon it. Tupi/Guarani mythology, Afro-Brazilian myth (Candomble, Umbanda), and general Brazilian folklore are all avenues that I feel Yara could help expand the Wonder Woman mythos and the DC universe as a whole.
I really hated how much the dropped the ball on the Brazilian culture with Yara!😒 Brazilian folklore is amazing, I loved the design for caipora and I think that it would be a great addition to the DC universe... Nope, we got more ancient Greek stuff & some butchered Portuguese frases.
Yes!!! Plus, I’m not an expert on the American comic book industry, but as far as I know, there were some Brazilians working in DC and Marvel, so I don’t see why they couldn’t hire them
If people are lukewarm on her now they would have hated her if CW got their claws on her. They say if you stand on the tallest mountain and listen really close on a quiet night you can actually hear the cringey girlboss dialogue.
It makes sense, why make a show about a character who is still evolving, that's like making a show about a comic character who only has 5 issues or a interesting video game character who just came out
8:46 Trial of the Amazons should’ve been about all of the Amazonian tribes (Paradise Island, Bana-Mighdall, and Amazon) trying to work together to unite despite their differences instead of making it a murder mystery. That way, we get to see the three Amazonian tribes do something and for Yara Flor to interact with Diana, Nubia, Donna Troy, Artemis, Cassie Sandsmark, and Queen Hippolyta.
Making the murder mystery was so stupid. You had 3 tribes (2 of which have been at odds and 1 that’s been hidden) with vastly different ideas and actions! Having them at odds and then having to come together for a fight that highlights the up’s and downs of each tribe would’ve made more sense, helped differentiate them more than just appearance, and give time for us to get to know Yara’s tribe
As a HUGE Wonder Woman fan, it's so sad DC continues to drop the ball when it comes to building Diana's world. In happy we're getting more exposure to Donna (a DISGUSTINGLY underrated character) and Cassie (mostly due to YJ), but Diana has a whole WONDER FAMILY that never gets their due. We rarely get to see them operate outside of the WW books or any established teams their on. I just want all the Wonder Woman comic book fans to rally around each other so we can get some development and longevity for these characters. Diana, Donna, Cassie, Nubia, Artemis, Hippolyta, and Yara deserve so much better!
Cassie and Yara are the only two thats different from Diana Artemis is a more eager to fight Diana and Donna Troy is her to T just more grounded it's no reason to give those two much stuff of their own they don't really stand out
i always wonder how wonder woman as a figure would have evolved if she had have a tas version liek superman and batman, most people forget that a lot of elements in the canons, characters and villains of batman and superman were reworked and refreshed in their cartoon versions, most of the batman villains became beloved thanks to btas for example, I wonder had WW had that, i feel a lot of her stuff would had been streamlined and become much more publically popular, specially because would have been the more fantastic magical side of batman crime noir and supes' scifi, cheetah would have been to the sides of joker and lex luthor, just liek ares to darkseid and ra's al ghul, maybe an immortal reincarnation romance with trevor and a more consistent canon to the amazons too
I personally think WW is at her best when Brian Azzerello took over for New 52. Her fighting the Greek Pantheon is the coolest thing I've seen out of her. After that, write a story where the gods try to hide from her by becoming the Roman Pantheon, and have her fight them again.
@@donna1717 Donna has no idea who she is because of all her in universe retcons. That's what needs to be focused on and use that to show how she has Diana's nature but not nurture. Donna isn't a warrior like Diana is. She would much prefer a life with no violence but does it because it's right. Dianna likes the challenge.
The delays are what i think really killed her. She had so much hype going into her solo series and then it just sorta fizzled out really quick when she just wasn't ever releasing. Unfortunately that's a pretty common problem with Joelle Jone's work. She cant seem to meet schedules well and her books end up suffering because of it, despite the fact she is a fantastic writer and artist for the most part
I think one of the biggest problems with her was that aside from her book, she was just… in nowhere. Like yeah she’s kinda in Wonder Woman, but she’s barely in it and she wasn’t remembered in anything beyond ‘oh she exists’ in dark crisis. I think she needs to be in a big team book to give her more prominence, and help her get notoriety among fans.
I'm not sure what she would be in though. Wouldn't feel right for her to be in Titans/Teen Titans or Young Justice Unless they restarted those books with a whole new team
I think she should have started out as just Yara Flor in the main continuity and not given the Wonder Girl title till way later because now she has to combat for page space with the other wonder girls who have relatively strong fanbases . It would have been nice to see her do her own thing, connect with the wonder girls and then grow into the role in the distant future. With how “immortal” characters tend to be, not having your own code name can be a death sentence to new characters. Yara can’t really be a Young justice or Titan character and that’s where the Wonder girls tend to gravitate to outside of the Wonder Woman main titles.
@@o.8.p149 Agreed. It would’ve make sense for Cassie Sandsmark to graduate as the Fury (after the Young All-Stars’ Helena Kosmotos and Infinity Inc’s Lyta Trevor) since Flashpoint in 2011 (or, in my headcanon, 10 years before Dawn of DC), where she would be help people, marry Conner Kent Superman in 2019 (or three years before Dawn of DC), and have a son named Hunter Kent born in 2023.
The problem is that DC leaped before they looked with Yara. Why give a brand new character that isn’t even a year old a tv show before the first arc of her book is even complete. Plus, with Characters like Nubia Donna Troy, Cassie, Artimus and now Trinity, Yara is just “There “ Hell, Cassie barely gets anything relevant to anymore, and she’s been around for decades. What chance does Yara have now?
At least with Nubia and Donna Troy, you could do a Wonder sisters storyline where they team up with Diana for something... Poor Cassie and Yara. Come to think of it, I'm surprised no one though of bringing those 3 together for a comic or something.
My mom is from brazil, so obviously I had a lot of hype for Yara, I just wish they used her more instead of fizzling her out. Things were a little weak but that's mainly because everything was rushed and all her like character stuff was in other character's comics
@@MrRobot1984 OMG I totally forgot about him and the avengers Academy, I honestly found graviton (Franklin) to be way formidable when it comes to his gravity powers
I was so dissapointed in Yara's story mostly because instead of actually exploring south american mythology it went straight back to the greek gods. It was such a missed opportunity to explore something underutlized in fiction. Yara still has alot of potential and I think the best thing to do would involve her primarily in the matters of her own tribe and fleshing them out in the process. There are alot of adventures to be had from adventures about exploring south american history and delving into it's folklore to dealing with all kinds of political issues and just generally dealing with Yara's own set of villains native to her part of the world. Snowflame IS Columbian after all. Also, didn't she live with an aunt in the US? How exactly is she involved? Has she been an amazon aswell or is something else going on? There. Already the premise of a storyline. DC and by extension WB are really too occupied with IP farming and don't seem to even try to make anything stick for more than a year wich is really detremental to basicly everyone involved.
Yara Flor is an underrated character who has a lot of potential; however, she’s just going to appear in cameos, teamups, and backgrounds in many DC titles just like a lot of Wonder Woman supporting characters and legacies because a lot of writers and editors don’t know what to do with her or the Wonder Woman family.
Wonder Woman tends to suffer from writers blowing up her status quo more than other DC heroes. If writers are constantly trying to figure her out then how can her supporting cast have a chance? I am not sure Wonder Woman supporting cast need multiple books if you want to go that direction then maybe just have one with all of them until you figure out who works and how they work.
Along with Cassie Sandsmark (who should remember that she’s the daughter of Zeus), Artemis (who last appeared in her Wanted one-shot from last year), Nubia (who interacted with Natasha Irons Steel and should remember that she’s Diana’s twin sister made from clay just like Diana), and Steve Trevor and Etta Candy (who should remember their entire pre-Crisis and pre-Flashpoint history and continuity).
She was a character that was everywhere... and then she was nowhere in record time. Like there have been some recent characters like Punchline and Marvel's Silk, who were also pushed hard, and then had so much multi media plans (for Silk, has been in a bunch of mobile games, and a show in a several year long development status), but then cooled so hard, yet are still around. With a great design, and background, I thought she'd have more outward success, but they've completely moved on, Which was a two pronged assault being a Wonder Woman character that don't stay around too long, and WB constantly being on fire.
They should have given her the push instead of Punchline who's pretty much M.I.A. since her book ended (although it seems she'll be back for the nightmare event)
9:58 It would makes sense for Yara Flor to tell Diana that she doesn’t like the name Wonder Girl and would use her actual name as her superhero name (like Donna Troy).
Yara Flor was a great and fun character. *So* much potential to be had that Warner Bros squandered. A real shame. Plus, as a Mexican American woman, it was real cool seeing a Latina Amazon from the literal Amazon.
@@JohnMinehan-lx9tsyes thats the distinction but most people don't care too much. Where I'm from we refer to ourselves as hispanic and don't necessarily exclude portruguese speaking countries. We don't really think anything of it but yeah there is a distinction in definitions
I didn't know she was being used in half of these, so thank you for enlightening me. I really liked her in future state tbh and was looking forward for her to be featured in more things, her story to be developed, and for her to take on a larger role in exploring the culture of Brazil. It felt refreshing to move away again from the greek/roman mythologies. Disappointing to hear that her other plots were so rushed.
Same. I agree with some critics that the writer really needs to do their homework to show Brazilian mythology/culture in a way that’s respectful, but I love the idea of other Amazon tribes in different parts of the world. Hope the character gets explored more.
I think what she really needs is to be given her own identity. Its a mistake for her to be called wondergirl because it sets her firmly into the "sidekick" category when she could easily have been her own character in the wonderwoman mythos. She doesn't feel like a sidekick so she shouldn't have been given the sidekick name
That would be irrelevant. Characters like Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain ended up dropping the Robin and Batgirl codenames but didn't go anywhere after that either.
I really like her. I think she could either be a great supporting character or even hold her own in a series dealing more with maybe Latin American heroes and villains, exploring their cultures and myths
I really liked her series and i cant lie her design and Joelle Jones art is what's initially drew me in. The art didnt shy away from showing she was gorgeous
I love Yara a lot and feel like she had so much potential, but Joelle Jones being behind on her book caused a lot of issues and I think DC was just tired of it being delayed. The book was solid over all I think and her having her own on-going out of the gate wasn't a bad thing. The sales don't seem to have been very bad, it's just the delays and issues caused problems with DC wanting, beyond all else, to push these awful tie ins that didn't work on any level. Also, let's be real.. DC has a TERRIBLE history with Wonder Woman and the Wonder Family. Diana is often treated like a D-Lister and her Family is treated like.. an aside at times.. I mean they've done massive reboots to Diana, multiple times, without ever considering how that changes Donna, Artemis (who also got rebooted), or Cassie. All that said, it's time to start coming up with more Wonder Family names than just Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl. Cause yeah..
I really like Yara. I think what she needs is a Brazilian writer, preferably one who is steeped in mythology and legend. I find it disappointing that mythology outside of Greco, Roman and Norse is sidelined in American media.
As a brazilian I liked her she seemed to have potential, and it's nice to see our folklore explored I can't say how accurate some of the thing they did are since outside things that are common knowledge most of what I know about my own country's folklore I learned from "Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo".
Is a shame that DC tripped trying to get Yara on the spotlight, as a Latino I was glad to see another Latino character being introduced that it wasn't the go to for writers (Mexican American or Puerto Rican if located in NYC...I barely see characters from other nationalities). I loved the art on the Future States series and the delay on the second series lead me to drop the book...I know lots of Brazilian readers had issues when it came to the cultural stuff in the book(s). Hopefully she gets a new name because Cassie is there in Limbo being not utilized and something tells me DC will pull some time travel mumbo jumbo and get Trinity to the present and become the new Wonder Girl.
It's funny that this video is coming out after your Trinity video. I was literally thinking, "Wait, where's Yara?" From the little, I know about her I think she has potential. It's just a shame to see they may not let her live up to it. I'd prefer her over Trinity, from what I saw from your last video.
The artwork in this comic was fantastic. I loved the design and the colors. I think what killed this, ultimately, was the attempt to make her another Wonder person, versus letting her stand on her own. Just didn't really feel like it worked, especially given that it's weird to connect the indigenous Amazonian peoples to the Greek Amazons. Now, to be clear, a Brown or Latina-coded Amazon from Themyscira is entirely fair play. But tying her to the literal Amazon just felt super lazy, even - or especially - with the backend attempt to explain it all. She should have just been a deity or demigod with foundational origins in the Amazon basin, or in the Pre-Colombian Americas more generally, without any connection to Wonder people or the Amazons themselves. The other issue is that she was definitely written as a type-A teeny-brawler versus as an honor-bound, thoughtful warrior. That didn't do her any favors.
I agree. Like she could still have interactions with Diana based around mythology pantheon shenanigans or something but she didn't need to be presented as a successor or anything. Like what happened to Donna as Wonder Girl that's a character that could use more attention. This could've been an opportunity for a new mostly stand alone character but alas
I liked the idea of the character but too much sterotypes, lack of care in terms of brazilian mythology. They could reintroduce the character with changes and I think that a story talking about the preservation of Amazon rainforest would be a good start.
Yara is WASTED POTENTIAL. She was fun and interesting... In Future State, for the two next issues in her own comic it was pretty interesting... Then They fucked everything up!? Look... She had a lot of hype, she was looked up and made a lot of success, success enough to try a TV show before her own comic being released. And what they made? One personality to every comic. Only cameos. They promised an important part in Dark Crisis... Never happened. Not even interesting powers. She looked like more of a street level character than semigod. Suddenly she was from interesting to only sassy... I have never seen a comic book character dethroned and destroyed so fast, it's bizarre.
Just seems like Naomi all over again, pushed to the front as soon as she was created, handed a TV show before even gaining a fan base, added to the JL and now forgotten 🤷🏿♂️
I only read 1 chapter of hers, don't remember which one, but it felt like the US view of a second generation latino who happens to be brazilian, and here is the thing, I really appreciate the folklore touches, but Brazil doesn't have the same relationship with the US as most of the spanish speaking latino countries, so it felt kinda shoehorned, like she was written to be a latina instead of being a brazilian character if that makes sense. She looks cool though.
This is one video I've definitely been looking for! I've been a Yara fan since she dropped but after hearing about the issues Brazilians have had over her I'm not sure how to feel about her
Yara was a victim of changing corporate/editorial changes. Dan Didio was a creative force for DC, but he thought constant upsetting the status quo was the way to ensure readership. It worked when he did Infinite Crisis-and 52. He revitilized the company. Then he kept changing the status quo so many times: Flashpoint, NU 52 Rebirth, Heroes in Crisis, Metal, Death Metal and so on. Dan Didio continued to micromanage. Decided to do a major shake-up. G5 would have replaced Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman with John Ken, Fox, and Yara. A new timeline would make Clark, Bruce in their 50s. Dan DiDio started micrimanaging his people. To set things up. Jon Kent being aged up, Bruce Wayne losing his money/Alfred (I'm convinced that Tom Kings original run would have cat and bat married) Future State was supposed to be a “Preview” of new storylines. However, Dan DiDio was fired and DC reworked existing material to patch up the latest Crisis. Yara suddenly had no future, now that the reason for existing was taken away.
Yara seemed really cool and I liked her design. Honestly this feels like it always happens with new characters, they're introduced, given little chance, and the status quo returns to shove them into the background(if they're not just forgotten about or killed off)
Nice recap Sasha. Yes, whim for the hot mess please 😂 Poor Wonder Yara on DC list is below the Punchline, but above the noobs Clown Maker, Miracle Molly, and Red Canary.
She's one of the few abrasive characters I like...but this just might be because Future State had three different versions at three different times, so we know she grows out of it. Maybe give her a different name than Wonder Girl like Donna Troy had? Or just let her be Yara Flor without a superhero name?
Maybe they should revive the Justice League International name, base it around her, Chinese Superman, and whichever foreign Batman is most popular at the moment. You could also throw in Fire and Ice for fans of the original.
Could you make a video about Lyta Trevers history, Wonder Woman's original daughter from Infinity Inc? All this talk of Trinity and Yara has gotten me curious about her.
I didnt like Yara. Diana is my only Wonder Woman. Donna is the only replacement I would ever be okay with and that would be a very low rate of acceptance. Plus the Trial of the Amazons was a horrid event. Most events now are garbage on both Marvel and DC sides.
*Lillie wears her golden Thigh chain* I will always remember her, a potential future. -------------------- I really love Yara design, story, character, and especially the art too. I haven’t seen anything stuff like this, but the only time I heard about Yara was from here… Yara is here but she’s just… only here. I hope for more.
DC needs to bring back Sensation Comics and have it serve as an anthology for the Wonder Woman family, just like Action Comics is for the Superman family.
Yara had so much potential but the way she was handled from the get go really stunted her character development. They jumped in the deep end to early with her. I do hope to see more of her. I certainly didn’t know she was even a character before Future State.
I actually like Yara, its a shame she didnt took off, I liked the art by Jöelle Jones in her series, she has a lot of untapped potential. I think they need to give her another chance, maybe with an actual brasilian writer than can get the culture in depth, Jones did a passible job imo but if Yara is to come back I think she should just focus on the art.
I love the design, I like the idea of a Mesoamerican Wonder Woman... and this is not that. It's like watching an arrow head straight for a bullseye... but then not even hit the target. 6:52 Or the broadside of a barn. One interpretation of the Amazonian myths is that they live in the Americas, Brazil or so, Heracles only knows for sure so why do it this way?
I tried to give Yara a chance when she first dropped, but at no point was I feeling Jones's writing. It just didn't hit with me. And I hated the design of her costume. Her costume was trying to be two (or more) different designs at once. The armor, the stripy panel shit, it did not mesh visually. And I feel like DC is still struggling to capture this mythological visual while adopting a "modern" superhero costume aesthetic for Wonder Women. I say "Women," because you could see this struggle going back to Diana in Nu52 to this new Trinity character. And Yara's costume design is one of the long line of incongruous designs. The main problem however, is the feeling that she, like so many Future State concepts, was shoved inexpertly into place with a ham-fisted marketing/story plan. I find it difficult to believe that any reader ever bought the idea she'd be a permanent replacement for WW, just like it was incredulous to think any of the classic JLAers would be replaced with their Future State stand-ins. Never mind that DC was going through a senses-shattering corporate shakeup. Once again, as with the launch of Nu52, there seemed to be no sense of creative coordination because everything was in flux IRL. And I feel as if DC is repeating the same errors it's been making since Nu52. And i don't know what can be done. Here I am picking up "new" books filled with old characters, like Titans or Green Lantern, because I want something that feels...I dunno...stable? Familiar? Like...some island of stability within a company that doesn't seem to know where it needs or wants to go.
The fact is Yara Flor is a victim of the Bendis Effect. What do I mean by the Bendis Effect, you ask? It's the desire by creators to get the same deal that BMB got for his crappy creation, Naomi. A deal he negotiated with DC bcuz he left so much money on the table with Miles Morales and Jessica Jones at Marvel and he had a similar position with Marvel that Geoff Johns had with DC at the same time. The same Johns who now had a TV series for his creation, StarGirl. Now, Joelle Jones is a much better writer/artist that Bowel Movement Bastich. Yara Flor is a much better character than I Moan backwards. But the WB/Discovery merger caused just as much upheaval behind the scenes as the constant events did in continuity. Naomi was a flop as a series and comic. Other CW female led shows flopped so WB wasn't inclined to continue pursuing another. Plus, fans were not clamoring for Naomi or Yara Flor. Creators are now trying to generate profitable IP now. And other writers don't seem interested in using these new creations unless editorially mandated. There are exceptions, of course, but DC's attempt at course correction regarding creator's rights and royalties, etc...is backfiring. Most of these new characters will end up like so many characters from the Golden Age that faded into obscurity.
This is my favorite comic-related UA-cam channel by far because of Sasha's comprehensive overviews and analyses of characters who others aren't talking about (or have forgotten about), like the newest iteration of Wonder Girl. Now that they've introduced yet ANOTHER new Wonder Woman family member, I truly wish DC would give some love to the existing family members.
As a brazilian, I'm partially happy that Yara was pushed aside for awhile I really hope she comes back to the spotlight soon, but WRITTEN BY A BRAZILIAN The book had so many tropes of Brazilian characters written by Americans and a lot of disrespect for (and lack of research on) my culture
I think Michael and Becky see Yara as the Yvonne Craig Batgirl of the Wonder Family. That said, she too bloody OLD to be Wonder Girl, and she should have been tied to some established W'verse character, ..even an obscure one, like Gen. Darnell or being a niece of Steve Trevor...
I know red hood and the outlaws during the new 52 wasn't everyone's favorite. That said remember when Jason Todd had his own trinity (Red hood and Starfire). Why not that but for Yara? 3 person team. Maybe with Donna and Cassie. Or two different people entirely.
Yara suffered from what hits all WW. DC has too many characters fitting the same tropes. Yara, Cassie, Donna, Nubia, Artemis, Hippolyta, and Diana all had potential to be unique but failed (except Artemis). Why use a character based on Brazilian mythology and rope almost all her story back into Greek myth totally? And several of the WW stories featuring her don’t really fit to pick her over Donna or Cassie (especially for them not to be more involved)
The Amazons legend i think you do some research on them. First thing they aren't Greek. In the real world they are based on Scythes and the Greek add them into the legends. What I think that what happen thousands of years ago they slit into tribes and ferlie and lost touch with other.
Unless you wander around your house musing out loud about what you're currently thinking about, it's probably safer to assume Sasha just uses telepathy rather than electronic surveillance equipment. :)
I think the problem with her was just as you said "Too much too soon" and "No consistency." I personally was very interested in her, but DC couldn't stick to an idea. I am what most nerds would refer to as a "normie nerd." Meaning I don't go deep into nerd media with a few exceptions. Also things like the multi verse or flux universes really turn me off. I think if Yara was given an Else world story than it would have faired better. Let her have her stories but not in the main universe. Let her shine with her own stories and merit. Don't have her be a replacement of established heroes. That will only anger fans of established characters. By having her be in her own setting she can be her own character. On top of that it would keep her and the stories consistent. Something that comics seem to can't grasp. New fans aren't going to jump and consume everything. They should be introduced slowly. I personally would have kept most of her back story with some small changes. Maybe have her be brought to the island and the queen had no Diana. Thus Yara is adopted and trained to be her universe's Wonder Woman. Then flesh her out, but keep her brash attitude. Also give her a unique rogues gallery. Not just hand me downs. But that is just me. It sadden me that she was handled so poorly. I really liked her design and the possibilities of her stories. But DC seems to have dropped the ball.
I do like her more then Trinity, but I'm definitely enjoying characters who are a bit more peppy right now, I'm probably going to burnt out on moody and brooding personalities for a while.
This kind of reminds me of that DC character Naomi. Instead of DC relying on good storytelling and trusting that the audience will lights character, they did everything to shove this character down people's throats including giving her a tv series when no one knows the character. You can always tell when pushing a character is politically motivated because it doesn't feel like a natural snowball effect.
Kinda funny seeing. Billy Batson looking about 12 trying to flirt with a 21 year old when you just did a video about him getting mistaken for a pedophile.
The problem with Yara Flor is that she has been portrayed differently by too many different writers from the beginning. She doesn't really have a personality or she is inconsistent. What's more, the Wonder Woman series and the last event she was in (trial of the Amazons) are just not good. Which, in my opinion, is due to incompetent writers and editors at DC. A shame really, as her design and premise had real potential.
I laughed that her name is written as Yara instead of Iara (How her name should be written in Portuguese) so Americans could pronounce her name correctly.
Any chance on covering Jess Chambers and Circuit Breaker? They've been characters on my radar but I'm not really sure about the wider goings on with them or how they've been received, might be nice to hear! Appreciated this breakdown too, Yara's design is rly striking and rly had me interested in seeing where she went, shame the writers don't really seem to know what to do with her now that she's here
I like the idea of a team up with the other Wonder Girls. I wonder if she could have joined the Titans or another team. DC seems to not know how to handle Wonder Girl characters.
Yara ORGANICALLY got over thanks to her charm and story. Props to Joelle Jones for bringing this character to life. The problem was DC wanted to push Nubia as the new Wonder Woman. Cassie got put over Yara in her own comic and they kept canceling her comic and starting it back up. Killing her momentum.
The reality is that she was not needed. DC already had Donna Troy. Who has been poorly developed in terms of her relevance within the Wonder Woman universe.
I loved the idea of Yara Flor and was very interested on the Brazilian side but then the first issue dropped and it was set in the USA and lost a lot of interest, but I still loved the wonderful artwork.
Yara feels like a missed opportunity to explore the idea of Wonder Woman in a modern world while also widening the relatability of the character. Wonder woman has always been a role model for women obviously, but the “child of 2 worlds” aspect of Yara can relate to a lot of people in modern times. I think all of the corporate synergy, or lack there of, was ultimately the reason she didn’t take off.
I love Yara Flor, there's definitely some big potential in her lore (Brazilian Amazon lore and the fact that there tribe lives in the Amazon rainforest). I hope Tom King doesn't sideline Yara and I hope he incorporates her within the new WW series, the back up story is a great idea or a Sensation Comics 🤞
I'd feel sorry if this didn't keep happening. To Vixen, to Starfire to so many comic characters mostly of color. The studio starts off with high hopes and a press release then six months later with the same studio ghosts them and then 'welp, it wasn't working anyway!' I mean we sabotaged it as best we could can't imagine why it failed. They'll drag Damian kicking and screaming into the Hall of Justice, but anyone else it's just a mystery. I think we'll see one more act. Like in the 90s, when the event train runs out of steam (check), they'll try and reach out internationally. With any luck she'll be one of the hits. The global market meets with minor success nothing so bit to turn DC, or its corporate daddy WB-Disc, heads, but enough to put her in the background of a DC revival (the one after Gunn).
I feel privileged to have witnessed firsthand, Yara bursting onto the scene, only to fizzle out into yet another background character. Maybe instead of trying so hard with her, they should have just eased her in and let her grow naturally. When they announced the CW show before she'd even debuted, I knew something was up. It feels like DC keep trying to introduce new big characters, but in the end all they do is increase the pool of obscure characters they can use for crowd scenes in big event stories. I look forward to the inevitable Wonder Girls series, where Yara, Cassie and Donna share an apartment in San Francisco or something.
9:40 The Cloonrad run of Wonder Woman became a hot mess because bad characterization, ignoring Wonder Woman storylines and events even though it’s supposed to lead into something, referencing Golden and Silver Age Wonder Woman adventures (i.e. Milk Corporation and Image Maker plot), and not establishing a timeline or continuity for the entire Wonder Woman family (and letting other writers and editors do it in other books).
Nice one Sasha! Little off topic but I have to request that you give the full Casually Comics treatment to the single most important character in comics history, I speak of course...of Bizzaro Krypto, the BAD (am good?) Wonder Dog!!!! C'mon! This is literally so right up your alley it's almost what the kids call "too on brand" right?
I like Yara Flor, but DC has always had an issue pushing characters. In situations where they could be pushed they opt to create someone new, to get a "new flavor of the month" then run them into the ground (I'm looking at you Batman Who Laughs). People STILL don't know what to do with Donna Troy and every 'big' story with Donna is WHO IS DONNA TROY?!?!?! Now they created Trinity to be snarky and blah at Jon and Damien and will not know how to push her or what to do with her in 6 months and she'll be a background character. They destroyed a great character with Tim Drake, who was arguably the most popular Robin into a character where he just shows up and is like "remember me? no? okay I'll go home......" Supergirl and Power Girl also get the shaft, and Superboy (Conner) and Steel are also mishandled, yet we get 173 Bat Titles a month....... Yara Flor should be the "Wonder Woman" that is with Jon Supes and Damien Bats in the story of WW 800 and pushed, instead of 'Trinity'. (That name annoys me as it has no originality, cuz she completes the New 'Trinity" of heroes).
How do you feel about Yara Flor?
So much potential, so much talent, so much thiccness... it is a shame
I like Yara. I think she has more chances if DC sits down for a minute instead of trying to punchline her down everyone's throat
Ya she easily could have had a ms marvel like rise to popularity especially with how many Brazilians there are but they dropped the ball
American here. I'd love if Brazilian folklore was a focal point of her character without the Greek pantheon becoming involved.
I really hated how much the dropped the ball on the Brazilian culture with Yara!😒 Brazilian folklore is amazing, I loved the design for caipora and I think that it would be a great addition to the DC universe... Nope, we got more ancient Greek stuff & some butchered Portuguese frases.
Yes!!! Plus, I’m not an expert on the American comic book industry, but as far as I know, there were some Brazilians working in DC and Marvel, so I don’t see why they couldn’t hire them
Cancelling her CW show is probably actually a good thing for her character.
If people are lukewarm on her now they would have hated her if CW got their claws on her. They say if you stand on the tallest mountain and listen really close on a quiet night you can actually hear the cringey girlboss dialogue.
Yeah if Yara had gotten the Naomi treatment the character would have been DOA
Batwoman💀
It makes sense, why make a show about a character who is still evolving, that's like making a show about a comic character who only has 5 issues or a interesting video game character who just came out
Yeah that would be really polarizing
8:46 Trial of the Amazons should’ve been about all of the Amazonian tribes (Paradise Island, Bana-Mighdall, and Amazon) trying to work together to unite despite their differences instead of making it a murder mystery. That way, we get to see the three Amazonian tribes do something and for Yara Flor to interact with Diana, Nubia, Donna Troy, Artemis, Cassie Sandsmark, and Queen Hippolyta.
They did that already before New52. War of the Amazons. Amazons we're at war with the US.
That sounds way better than that stupid murder mystery we got
Making the murder mystery was so stupid. You had 3 tribes (2 of which have been at odds and 1 that’s been hidden) with vastly different ideas and actions! Having them at odds and then having to come together for a fight that highlights the up’s and downs of each tribe would’ve made more sense, helped differentiate them more than just appearance, and give time for us to get to know Yara’s tribe
Wow I’m early. Last time I was this early Yara Flor was still supposed to be the new main Wonder Woman.
@@VaporeonEnjoyer1I disagree best Diana Run is her 80s Perez run.
Doesn't matter how good the assignment is if you hand it in for next years class.
Yara Flor: The DC character version of fumbling the bag.
Or is it better to say she couldn’t secure it?
🫠
That is every legacy character's problem because comics in general do not have the gumption to kill of characters permenantly.
@@alnu8355the trinity isn’t getting killed off permanently at this point that just wouldn’t help sales
I'm not sure what she would be in though. Wouldn't feel right for her to be in Titans/Teen Titans or Young Justice
Unless they restarted those books with a whole new team
I have literally never seen her in any comic book. She's like some rumored film that never got released.
If Cassie had gotten a new codename before Yara was made then I think making Yara younger and calling her wonder girl could have worked
They just need to make a Team up comic named "Wonder Girls" led by Donna Troy as their leader.
@@Superlad945 dick hasn’t been Batman for a while
@@o.8.p149 Agreed.
Donna troy- troia
Cassie sandsmark- fury
Yara flor - wonder girl 3
The problem is that DC leaped before they looked with Yara. Why give a brand new character that isn’t even a year old a tv show before the first arc of her book is even complete.
Plus, with Characters like Nubia Donna Troy, Cassie, Artimus and now Trinity, Yara is just “There “
Hell, Cassie barely gets anything relevant to anymore, and she’s been around for decades.

So sad how she fizzled out, but as a Brazilian I must agree that her pathos ended up being pretty weak.
How so? I heard Brazil didn’t like how sexualized the character was but haven’t nailed down what specifically they didn’t like?

Donna Troy is the prime example of the status quo shake up
Along with Cassie Sandsmark (who should remember that she’s the daughter of Zeus), Artemis (who last appeared in her Wanted one-shot from last year), Nubia (who interacted with Natasha Irons Steel and should remember that she’s Diana’s twin sister made from clay just like Diana), and Steve Trevor and Etta Candy (who should remember their entire pre-Crisis and pre-Flashpoint history and continuity).
@@djpegaoalso she’s a better character than Punchline
9:58 It would makes sense for Yara Flor to tell Diana that she doesn’t like the name Wonder Girl and would use her actual name as her superhero name (like Donna Troy).
Yara Flor was a great and fun character. *So* much potential to be had that Warner Bros squandered. A real shame.
Plus, as a Mexican American woman, it was real cool seeing a Latina Amazon from the literal Amazon.
weird curiosity: Did you know that only 4.5% of Brazilians born in Brazil identify as Latino?
@@JohnMinehan-lx9ts Mexicans and Brazilians are both from Latinaamerica, making them both Latino

If anything, this means nobody at DC had no idea what to do with these characters. Kinda like Kara...
@@dabellwrites6888 can't blame them. It's really hard.
I really like her. I think she could either be a great supporting character or even hold her own in a series dealing more with maybe Latin American heroes and villains, exploring their cultures and myths
I thought that’s where they were going with her character
I couldn't agree more.
Same here. Heck, I’ve created a timeline where the entire Wonder Woman Family gain their character development and got treated with respect.
I really like Yara. I think what she needs is a Brazilian writer, preferably one who is steeped in mythology and legend. I find it disappointing that mythology outside of Greco, Roman and Norse is sidelined in American media.
I hope Yara finds prominence again. I have a few friends that really like her and I enjoyed what I've read from her solo run(really good art).
As a brazilian I liked her she seemed to have potential, and it's nice to see our folklore explored I can't say how accurate some of the thing they did are since outside things that are common knowledge most of what I know about my own country's folklore I learned from "Sítio do Pica Pau Amarelo".
DC are so dumb sometimes. Yara Flor had everything going for her. Hopefully they bring her back soon, and commit to developing her properly
I loved Yara. I bought every issue and thought they were great. A superhero who dealt only with fantasies and myths was enjoyable.
They couldn't wait to create another white girl
It's funny that this video is coming out after your Trinity video. I was literally thinking, "Wait, where's Yara?"
From the little, I know about her I think she has potential.
Who?
DC always tries to do this. Introduce new twist of legacy characters, for quick cash grabs, then when interest declines...repeat, OR insert Crisis.
Can you talk about Quicksilver forgotten daughter??
Omg Luna. Tbh I’d even go so far to say wandas children are forgotten too lol
Even the little bit of relationship we have with U.S is not very positive...
Boo Trinity! All my homies hate Trinity!
Give us Yara Flor!
Can't believe Future State was already two years ago.
Jon Kent being aged up, Bruce Wayne losing his money/Alfred (I'm convinced that Tom Kings original run would have cat and bat married)
Future State was supposed to be a “Preview” of new storylines.
However, Dan DiDio was fired and DC reworked existing material to patch up the latest Crisis. Yara suddenly had no future, now that the reason for existing was taken away.
Yara seemed really cool and I liked her design. Honestly this feels like it always happens with new characters, they're introduced, given little chance, and the status quo returns to shove them into the background(if they're not just forgotten about or killed off)
I personally want to see more Of Yara Flor "Solo-Series", I'm in love with her since she came out... Please, bring her back?!...🤞🏽🙏🏽
Nice recap Sasha. Yes, whim for the hot mess please 😂
Poor Wonder Yara on DC list is below the Punchline, but above the noobs Clown Maker, Miracle Molly, and Red Canary.
Or you should think Batman or Superman or Wonder Woman more of TITLE than a RACE . Than the person itself.
*Lillie wears her golden Thigh chain*
I will always remember her, a potential future.

I really love Yara design, story, character, and especially the art too.
I haven’t seen anything stuff like this, but the only time I heard about Yara was from here…
Yara is here but she’s just… only here.
I hope for more.
DC needs to bring back Sensation Comics and have it serve as an anthology for the Wonder Woman family, just like Action Comics is for the Superman family.
So much this!
I thought she was interesting when she first popped up, and then she disappeared just as fast. I didn't know what happened.
She’s drawn Hot that’s my main interest 🤔
I don't know much about her, but I do know that she has my favourite design of all Wonder women/girl designs. She's just absolutely gorgeous.
Trinity is coming to be in her place and she will be forgotten or at least in the freezer for some time sad stuff.
It's not mesoamerican wonder woman and it can't be, brazil is not part of mesoamerica.
I’m sooo disappointed that DC aged up Jhon Kent and made him a poof. What a waste of a character🤦♂️
Can you do a video about who is still part of the WW family? Artemis, Fury, Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark, Jason, Yara, Trinity, Hippolyta, etc ?
Nubia!
As a brazilian, I'm partially happy that Yara was pushed aside for awhile
I really hope she comes back to the spotlight soon, but WRITTEN BY A BRAZILIAN
The book had so many tropes of Brazilian characters written by Americans and a lot of disrespect for (and lack of research on) my culture
🥱
What I think that what happen thousands of years ago they slit into tribes and ferlie and lost touch with other.
supergirl, powergirl, donna, cassie, Mary Marvel, Artemis etc., and now Trinity. They couldn't wait to add on the list and screw over Yara Flor
Does Sasha just have a secret camera in my house idk about because I’ve been thinking about Yara Flor: Wonder Woman this whole week?!?!?!😱🤣
I like Yara. I just think its a waist to have her as ANOTHER Wonder Girl/Wonder Woman. she is original her title isn't.
I liked the yara solo run. I also liked the concept of the 3 amazon tribes. Seems like a missed opportunity to build the Wonder Woman mythos.
Her WG series is AMAZING!!! DC hates the Wonderverse, for real 😂😂😂
I think you mean Amazons not wonderwomen.
I wanted her to be Diana's successor SO bad. I really loved her design and character. She's WAY better than Trinity IMO.

Billy: "Wanna date with me one of these days, Yara?!"
Yara: "Dude, do you think I want to meet Chris Hansen?!"
I laughed that her name is written as Yara instead of Iara (How her name should be written in Portuguese) so Americans could pronounce her name correctly.
You have to admire DC's commitment to make WW supporting characters as mixed up as Donna Troy's canon.
Any chance on covering Jess Chambers and Circuit Breaker? They've been characters on my radar but I'm not really sure about the wider goings on with them or how they've been received, might be nice to hear! Appreciated this breakdown too, Yara's design is rly striking and rly had me interested in seeing where she went, shame the writers don't really seem to know what to do with her now that she's here
I always maintained Yara florr wonder girl had so much potential but they dropped the ball badly at least in my opinion.
I like the idea of a team up with the other Wonder Girls. I wonder if she could have joined the Titans or another team. DC seems to not know how to handle Wonder Girl characters.
Hey Sasha I’d love for you to do a what happened to Jace Fox video. I was really invested in him and he seems to have been locked away
A shame, since way more interesting than their pet project Punchline. They should have focused on Yara more than Alexis
The reality is that she was not needed. DC already had Donna Troy. Who has been poorly developed in terms of her relevance within the Wonder Woman universe.
I forgot about Death Metal, I didn't wanna remember it Owlman baby still haunts me
I loved the idea of Yara Flor and was very interested on the Brazilian side but then the first issue dropped and it was set in the USA and lost a lot of interest, but I still loved the wonderful artwork.
After the Naomi CW show it is for the best that Yara Flor Cw Show getting shelved. CW do more harm than help.
I was wondering what happed to her and future state and dawn of dc……
Yara feels like a missed opportunity to explore the idea of Wonder Woman in a modern world while also widening the relatability of the character. Wonder woman has always been a role model for women obviously, but the “child of 2 worlds” aspect of Yara can relate to a lot of people in modern times. I think all of the corporate synergy, or lack there of, was ultimately the reason she didn’t take off.
She is my favorite wonder woman family type character. I wish they would stick with the seperate tribes that have tensions with each other
I love Yara Flor, there's definitely some big potential in her lore (Brazilian Amazon lore and the fact that there tribe lives in the Amazon rainforest).
Bizarro Krypto is Worst Doggo. :)
@@richmcgee434 And him deserve attention for that behavior 😉
DC in 2023: "Trinity will be the next Wonder Woman"
Yara Flor: "WE HAD A GODDAMN AGREEMENT!!!" 🤬
😂😂😂😂😂
