  • This video will show what a block out mesh is and how to make it (literally to Block a mesh Out).
    Before creating the details, it is good practice to creat a block out mesh. This is a 'blocky' version of your model with simple shapes and details. It has the correct scale and general shape. It is made of the same components (parts) as the final model.
    In part 3 we will place this block out mesh into Unreal Engine. This will allow us to make a scene before even creating any details. Doing this is useful for trying different compositions or for making level Block Outs in the engine.

    I recently got into 3D Modeling and i thought i had all the basics figured out but still felt that i lacked something.. and watched so many videos of so many people regarding 3D modeling and the fact that i learned so much in this video is just absolutely amazing as heck.. I am so excited after having seen the process of refining and working around stuffs and finding options in maya that did the exact thing i wanted in the way i wanted it to be is amazing.. Thank you so much for this series, i cant wait for more of them to come.. You made my Day..💝💖💞

    Hey Stefan, would it still be possible to see a continuation/redo of this series?
    The series so far has been, and I should stress it, EXTREMELY useful & insightful for a starting developer like me!
    Absolutely love how you're able to put your thoughts into words and really give us insight into how you think about assets like this.
    Eitherway it's fine! Your other videos are super helpful as well :)

      This video's always gotten a lot of requests for a continuation. The past year and a bit has been very intense but I do want to get back to this. In the new year I have fewer work hours so maybe i'll finally be able to do this series properly!

      Hey, I ended up teaching this project at a university course, but my specialism is character art really.
      I'd like to do this series properly (these videos get hits every year) but it's hard to find the time. I won't promise anything, but I hope i get round to it sometime too!

    Have you done the 3rd one yet? Interested to understand why so much detail goes in the whiteboxing of buildings, only to rebuild them again with modular textured pieces in Unreal.... I mean, why not just use a simple cube to block out the scene? I'm clearly missing something. ..

    • @stefantom4
      @stefantom4  3 роки тому +2

      Hey there. Ill be re-starting the series when my schedule opens up again- its been very busy recently. Now let me answer your question:
      The point of the workflow is to break a model into several modular pieces that we can then use to make several different kinds of buildings. Its not about blocking out an environment, but segmenting one single asset into multiple combinable ones. Also, blocking out the asset in maya allows me to put it in unreal, check the scale, then work on it in Maya and finally simply update the unreal asset. The finished model will automatically replace the blockout asset in unreal, in the correct locations and i the right scale. If i build the level out of cubes directly in unreal, i the have to export them to maya, or guess the scale and shape.

      @@stefantom4 Cool, looking forward to it. Please do the ENTIRE pipeline process. I'm going crazy going back and forth tutorials that doesn't fully explain the processes and leaves on hanging on step 4, whereas step 5-9 is ignored or not explained (for example).

    • @stefantom4
      @stefantom4  3 роки тому

      @@josephvanwyk2088 I know what you mean. I'd like to cover it fully and well which is why It's hard to find the time. Have to plan first, then prep and record. Otherwise things will be missed, rambled or just not done optimally. Has to be an example process after all
