Just a heads up. The case is IP65 rated watertight on the Harbor Freight site. Looking into that rating I came across this: _"An IP65 rated enclosure gives protection against low pressure water jets from any direction, as well as condensation and water spray. It’s suitable for most outdoor enclosures that won’t encounter extreme weather such as flooding."_ The immersion in the bathtub was essentially subjecting it to flood conditions which is beyond the rating ability to protect. Without meaning to you subjected it to an unfair test of that feature.
Damn I must have missed the sale, but I need it regardless and this vid made me feel better about choosing it, since I don't have money or room for an actual unsafe in my home.
I bought one for my bergara hmr in 300 win mag, it works great but is decently heavy with the rifle in it. I would highly recommend spraying the pick apart foam inside with plasti dip, it stiffens the foam up and makes it last quite a bit longer cause you're not accidentally breaking it everytime you get the gun out.
@@ReviewThisThing You're welcome. Considering all things in your review and given the fact I'll probably never throw it out of a second floor window I may still pass on this case. I found the 1750 for only $40 more on a website called Native Outdoors.
I haved mine for 4 or 5 years and has held up pretty good. I have a ar, 12g and 3 pistols 22.,9, 45 in mine. Its my beginner/1st range day set up. It was water tight years ago pool tested.
sweet. i was looking at this one for my off road rig. not for long guns but for recovery equipment so the foam will be tossed out almost right away compared to the pelican cases this seems like it will do the job perfectly at a fraction of the price.
There was a one day sale on it for 50% off all Apache cases 5/13/24. So it ended up $85. Great review by the way! Thanks so much for your due diligence.
I think when you buy a case they should always be water tight, the way I would test it is take out the foam and fill it with water and then pick up from end to end and see if it leaks.
Just get that spray contact glue ready, wrap the gun in a garbage bag to make sure the glue does not touch it, then wrap the gun/garbage bag in a thick flannel bed sheet, then spray the glue, then press the wrapped gun into the case where you picked out the foam and the foam should stay in place as it now has a flannel liner between the gun and the foam keeping the foam perfectly in place. If you can find it, a nice felt liner would be even better!
I always buy one of these when they have the coupon for $120. I also bought a few of the smaller ones and use them as ammo cans to store my loaded mags.
It’s almost to big. I wish they sold a mid size case. I wouldn’t dunk it in water, but riding around in the rain in the back of the sxs is fine. Pluck foam sucks across the board. I’ve pulled the pieces and sprayed the entire thing with bed liner and that works for awhile,…..until you add a scope or want to carry a different gun.
I havd the original Pelican. Yes, they are heavy. Yes, they are excellent if you do a lot of traveling, and it's TSA approved. I don't use it to go back and forth to my local range (30 miles from my home), because its too bulky and takes a lot of room up in the trunk of my car. The only reason I own it, is because my former employer was a retailer for Pelican, so I got the Pelican for just a few bucks more than this Apache. Pelican also has a lifetime warranty, not 90 days like this Apache case. I've looked over the Apache (my son bought one), and it's definitely inferior in construction and quality to the Pelican. If I'd had to pay regular retail price for it, I wouldn't have bought it. I don't go anywhere that requires this level of protection.
Great review, y'all take things to the extreme, I would worry from a fall off a shooting table or pick up tailgate but throwing it off a balcony, Ba-haaa, that crazy! Also, love the kitty, she was in for a shock also.
For a cheapskate like me who also doesn’t travel this case should work if I ever need to get a new case. Thank you for the review I was very curious about it.
Questions: Did you do the watertightness test before or after you cracked the case in the drop test that damaged the seal? Also, did you depressurize it (closed the valve 100%) before submerging it? 0
I enjoyed the video and information. However, the IP rating they advertise as IP65, does not indicate it can be submersed. Water protection The second digit in an IP rating indicates the level of water protection, with 5 being the level for IP65. An IP65 rating means the device is protected against water jets from any direction, as well as splashing, dripping, misting, and rain. However, it doesn't protect against full submersion or prolonged exposure to water.
needs clip locks on both ends. and a place to lock the midway with a third pad lock. easy to over load with weight. ar-15 with a bit of extra loads, some tools. thought keeping with gun is good. but i installed a bit too much weight. but strong will hold up. only way i see to really improve it is a larger dim hinge rod. also stronger cut restant steel. safety thing to make it harder for a thief.
I own four of them and I’ve have never had a problem with either of them one was run over with truck and also had one go in the pond with the side by side
In this case, spend more headache less. I would guess even with a 90 warranty and the case fails Harbor Freight would likely not honor the warranty if any evidence of slight misuse is present. Thank you, I subscribed.
I don't know why people crying about the weight, 22 pounds wouldn't bother me because lighter ones won't hold up as well because the only way to lighten it up is make the plastic thinner there by making it weaker, and as for the weight, how far or how long are you carrying it
Not sure why these gun cases arent made of hdpe. Sure its soft but it doesnt break easily. Hdpe survives decades in direct sunlght without deterioating from uv rays. It is solvent resistant and would protect guns far better than any thin hard plastic
Would be nice they would sale more firearm Products I think they would really do great if they would sale firearms hay all most all tools came form Harbor freight and great products
These cases are not a good investment. Unless you are HALO jumping into an austire environment, these cases provide unnecessary levels of protection at an extreme of weight and bulk. These cases also just scream "steal me", everyone knows what these cases are and what they carry, so if you want to advertise to everyone who sees it that you have valuable weapons, go right ahead and have fun with that. My advice is to buy a Vickers or blue force gear two point quick adjust sling and carry your rifle. It will be safer in your hands than in any case. If you can't be seen carrying a rifle, get a guitar case or sea bag or a discreet rifle case, Savior Tactical makes an excellent and very discreet soft case. If you do have one of these and travel with it, go get a giant, very worn and shitty looking duffel bag from a thrift store and put the hard case inside of it, it will attract much less attention and you are extremely unlikely to be murdered for it Always remember there are people out there who would be happy to murder you and take your stuff, and the only thing keeping some of them from getting you is their ignorance of the value of your possessions
Retired/disabled LEO and are people aware that Harbor Freight has a policy to not allow ANY persons with firearms in their store to shop? Today I went to pick up some things that I called a head for and were waiting for me at the register (thanks Dana) and I usually get a shopping cart and then place my bag which has a firearm and identification and glasses and things in it in the cart. I go in the store and shop, pay and leave. The store had all the shopping carts outside locked up so I went in and asked if i can take a shopping cart from the store to put my bag in it? A women came over and asked what I wanted to do and why etc? I told her and that I am a regular customer. She said hold on then went away coming back shortly saying "no, the manager Dennis said no you can not use a shopping cart and can not bring your bag in the store". I asked for Dennis to come speak with me. He said he was a "US Marine" and has guns also. I said okay what is the problem here? He said he did not know what the store policy is (btw there are no signs indicating the policy, I took photos) but that because "he knows that I have a firearm in my bag that I can not use a cart or bring my bag in. I said that I also have a side arm currently while talking with him and then he looks at me and said "well I can't tell so you could come in but no bag or cart".! I pointed out that there are no signs with such a policy on the door and many people are just walking into the store with bags and even a guy walks his scooter in the door. Dennis said let me go make a call and I will come back and see you. I said okay and in the meantime I will call the Police because I would like to file a complaint and have a record. The police never came after 2 hours and Dennis never came back to talk with me. I think I understand why Harbor Freight does not reveal their policy. Mostly men shop there and the men are usually just regular guys who like tools, cars, guns and such. Posting an anti 2A policy on the door is not going to help them with their sales. It seems like their policy is if they don't know about it and don't tell customers that is good enough. I would bet though if anything ever happened in the store they would be doing quite a dance claiming they have a policy of no firearms. As for Dennis the "US Marine". Sad sell out and no honor claiming he would return to talk. In summary I am not saying people should not shop at Harbor Freight but when I can avoid it I will. China has enough of my money anyway

Ah. Well that’s good to know. Thanks!

Now that’s smart!
I just got the same deal

Read a review of this case on Harbor Freight that says the foam for the Pelican Protector 1750 fits pretty well. May be a bit better quality too.
@PoliticallyInsensitive thanks!

Pick and pull foam always does that. There is a spray to harden it so it doesnt continue to separate. Even pelicans have the foam issue.
What’s the spray called???
Plastidip. Use multiple coats
@stephanhoward1303 need to try that
I think when you buy a case they should always be water tight, the way I would test it is take out the foam and fill it with water and then pick up from end to end and see if it leaks.

For firearms, i use pelican. But i bought 2 of these for offroad recovery gear stroage for my roof rack.

Apparently they were on sale at Christmas for $99!!!
Bought one. Sturdy case. Foam bits come apart very easily. Case is quite heavy estimated at 50+ pounds.
Excellent info!
On the seal, even an ammo can needs routine maintenance with lubing the gasket.
Great point

I bought this as an upgrade to those thin plastic walmart cases I had, this one is way better!
@MrMattMohler oh man! So much better than those!
Just bought one for my metal detector. It should be big enough to hold headphones, spare coil, handheld detector, 18" mini shovel and spare batteries.
That’s a good idea.
Thanks for the review, informative as always. Be well guys.

Got it for $99 on Black Friday sale and had a 20% coupon. Too good to pass up for that price.

Questions:
Did you do the watertightness test before or after you cracked the case in the drop test that damaged the seal?
Also, did you depressurize it (closed the valve 100%) before submerging it? 0
Water test was before we dropped it. And I did turn the valve all the way before as well.
I enjoyed the video and information. However, the IP rating they advertise as IP65, does not indicate it can be submersed.

I would never do that to eggs. I cannot imagine a drop off of........ a table or a pickup truck tailgate that's gonna hurt that bad! Wow!

So true. Definitely not light.
That was a good review I appreciate it now I know to avoid it

Can't you just buy new foam for it?
Probably
Audio is so muffled that I had to turn off bass on the speaker so I could understand it.
Hmmm…that’s odd. Where were you trying to watch it? It sounds normal on my phone.
Wud a fx panthera fit it
I’m not as familiar with those air guns, but it depends on the size.
Not putting a 2k $ gun in a $200 case.
Solid point.
The deduction on the "Pick and Pluck" is the same problem any other gun case has with pick and Pluck....

These aren’t cheap, and we haven’t tested a ton, but the SKB case for sure. ua-cam.com/video/h9AMLvppgRs/v-deo.htmlsi=xTnpVekVPzQS85Z6
