Although it looks like a granny bike, it is very practical, especially for those who commute daily to work or school. It has every feature we need, well except the style for some who like more stylist bike.

I’m so glad you said it looks like a granny bike. I’m a granny at 73, and I feel like this bike equates to an engineer’s motorbike!

That is a very Northern European eBike. It has a café lock, rack, mudguards, stand, everything. It is sold as a complete vehicle. There is a great tradition in Northern Europe of bicycles like this and that tradition is being continued into eBikes. These eBikes and bicycles are made to be used everyday for doing shopping, getting to work etc. They are really practical, often they have hub gears as this one does. Often they have hub brakes as well actually, although not in this case.

Great review, I've always been fascinated by hydraulic rim brakes, I've heard a lot of good things about them and I've heard that some people proffer them over hydraulic disc brakes. They don't get anywhere near as hot as disc brakes, they cool a lot faster, they have better leverage. I haven't had the pleasure of testing hydraulic rim brakes on a bike but I really want to. What is the comparison in stopping power? Does one have better stopping power than the other or is it something else that catches peoples interest? I'm seeing a lot more city commuter bikes like this with hydraulic rims rather than hydraulic discs and I've always wondered why.

Looking at buying a 3 year old Kalkhoff Agattu Impulse 8 HS. Used for a few months in 2015 but stored in garage with the occasional charge. Feeling for £900 ( British Pounds ). Only concern is the battery. How would I know if it's a good buy? Your reviews are amazing. You say it was Germany's best seller. Any advice ?

The lock is not good enough.
You need a second chain to block the bike, or they steal the whole bike.

You always do a great job in your reviews I truly admire the quality of your reporting. I think these bikes represent the future of human mobility and freedom. I´ve had many ebikes so far and for the first time in ten years I see a clear improvement in battery technology. Most people like the true, real possibility of not having to pedal at all at times and this is becoming reality fast. Andrés from Santiago, Chile.

There have been problems with the Nu-Vinci automatic gear hub version failing. This one has the Shimano hub.

I’m certain riding on gravel, as you were, wasn’t too comfortable on your behind. Those tyres are somewhat unforgiving.

    hi.
    1. can you ride the bike without the battery?
    2. does the bike have regenerative breaking?
    3. if you do run into a empty battery system, can you still ride the bike?
    4. what's you experience of real world range of the battery on a single charge A. from 100%-15% B. from your advice if you ride between 80-20% capacity?
    Thank you.

Which is the better braking system? Back pedal or freewheel? The Kalkhoff web site also mentions "Stop and Go?"

Far from it! That one is described as Jet Grey. As a granny, I’d very much prefer a reasonably nice color but I am sooo grateful for the freedom, fitness, strength and relaxation it has brought me!
