  • The Kalkhoff Tasman Classic Impulse 8 is one of the most capable step-thru cruiser style electric bikes around, excellent range, stiff frame, good weight distribution and safety features. Aluminum alloy fenders and rear carry rack are painted to match the frame ( and they don't rattle while riding), dynamo powered LED lights function without battery power, integrated mini-pump and cafe lock are delightful extras. Internally geared hub stays clean and keeps the chain tight, adjustable kickstand is solid, battery pack is removable for reduced weight during transport or convenient charging off the bike, hydraulic rim brakes work very well.

Any chance of a review of the Day 6 bikes? That store you visited in the Bay Area (Electric Bicycle Outlet) carries them but I can find very few reviews or videos. Thanks. I love your format and informative videos.

What is the gear system used?

Moosa Altaf Hi Moosa, this one uses an eight speed Shimano Nexus geared hub located in the rear wheel. You shift with a grip twist on the right handle bar. Here are some more specs on the bike: electricbikereview.com/kalkhoff/tasman-classic-impulse-8/ the images further down show the twist shifter I"m referring to :)

Yikes - $3800?? I first thought sub-$2000. when the video began.. Brooks saddle though is a telltale that the price will be higher....Interesting rim brakes - when you think about it, the whole wheel is a disc - and one far larger than a mere 180mm disc brake rotor. Tough love color - it's a women's lipstick color, which i guess is where the step-thru design is aimed

ForbinColossus Yeah, the rim brakes were very powerful and probably won't heat up the way a disc might on a steep long hill. You might get more squeaking if the rim is wet from puddles and stuff but it's not as likely to get dirty and scratch the rim as with a mountain or trail bike. The Tasman Classic also comes in lime green... or maybe it's candy apple green? Either way, fun colors that women might appreciate. The bike is pretty serious, very capable drive system and build so the price makes sense, basically more of a car replacer like they appreciate in Germany and other parts of Europe vs. a fun basic cruiser which we tend to see a lot in the US :)

Interesting, Court - thanks for taking te time to write out the philosophy of its design. Curious: You did this one in San Francisco. How do you produce these vids on the road? You are a rolling studio!
