    Young Phil over at ‪@graduallywizardly‬ has issued a challenge late in the year - make something that you couldn't have crafted 5 years ago, and then, give it away! Being a nice guy, Phil gave us months to prepare, and I've begun and finished mine within a couple days of the deadline! Better late than never! 😆
    Fortunately I'm currently playing around with the 22W Alpha from ‪@algolaserofficial‬ , a super powerful laser engraver that I'm already making great use of in the shop - and it means I can easily and quickly craft a Dice holding box for a friend who is into Dungeons & Dragons.
    Huge thanks to Sinis Mall and Algolaser for setting me up with the tool. I've had 2 lasers previously, both of them much, much, weaker - around the 5w or 10w level, and they were never able to convince me that using the laser was anything more than a gimmick for lightly drawing a logo on a piece of timber.
    The Alpha has changed my mind on them, 22W is enough to deeply engrave and cut through hardwood, cut right through thick MDF/Ply/Pine, and even colour engrave on stainless steel.
    I think it will become a commonly used tool in the workshop, and I'm eagerly thinking up and designing projects where it will help me take my woodworking to the next level.
    Check it out for yourself, and if there is a particular test cut you want me to attempt, yell out!

    The design for this dice box came from my friend, however it is very heavily derived from some that are available on Etsy. You can see them from that seller here (no affiliation): etsy.me/3uSPMcT

    It's great to see a project where the laser isn't just creating templates. Great idea with the magnets, much better for this application than hinges. Nice colours in the wood used. 👍👍

      I'm actually surprised at how well the magnets hold, they're an amazing thing!

    Thats a nice dice tray design, though I did cackle a bit with all those D6's 🤣

      ahahaha, yeah coloured dice is the best I can do, no D20's here 😆 I don't take credit for the design, it came from my friend but is based very heavily on an existing one. I should update the description come to think of it. 👍

      Cheers Mark, it came together in the end but yeah, bit annoying that the cuts didn't work in th efinal product as they did in the tests! I'm planning a big 'mega test' day on the laser soon, will prep everything beforehand and come away with all the settings I'll ever need to know!

      'White clear coat' 😆 Find some hardwood and start running some tests, you'll be surprised how deep it can cut. I got a bit unlucky in this one but I'm planning a bunch more tests to try to nail it down for the next project!

    Pretty. Never heard of these 2 woods before and am not even sure I am hearing the lighter one right. Look nice with the contrast.

    I think that might be Vic Ash or Tassie Oak that you're using there and not Blackbutt because Blackbutt is even denser and heavier than Jarrah and I doubt the laser would be able to cut through it at that thickness. Very cool box though.

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  9 місяців тому +1

      Oh interesting 😲 I bought this off of another woodworker during covid who advertised it as blackbutt, and having not seen any before, I never questioned it. It's the only blackbutt I've had my hands on so I've no other to compare it too. You're right, looking up the stats it should be denser than Jarrah! It doesn't look like the vic ash or tassie oak that I've worked with before, and actually I'd say it feels lighter than them too - so it's mystery wood 😄 I'm going to check it later on and see if there are any markings or anything like that to help me ID it. Good shout, thanks!

    Awesome job Mario!!
    Box looks great.
    Do you have to seal the charred edge from the laser, to stop it dirtying by everything?

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  9 місяців тому +1

      For 95% of the charred edges, I gave them a wipeover with a piece of paper towel to get the loose dust off, and then just the spray varnish to seal it. The only parts that needed a little extra loving were where the laser didn't quite cut all the way through, so they took a minute of filing as well. For the majority of the build where it cut cleanly, it's a beautiful smooth black, really really attractive. 👍

    You’re thinking of Yakisugi, but that refers specifically to japanese cedar. “Shou sugi ban” is total gibberish; a mix of Chinese and Japanese that makes no sense to either.

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  9 місяців тому +1

      ooh interesting, 'shou sugi ban' is a trademarked name, i guess it's kinda like kleenex vs tissue. I'll stick with 'burnt wood' then 😋
