  • In this lecture, we'll look at Virilio's 1986 essay "The Last Vehicle", which focuses on the paradoxical increase in speed through various forms of technology-aided transportation with the simultaneous increase of sedentary movements (strapping into a seat ergonomically designed to minimize the need for movement). Among other things, this essay helps understand Virilio's shift from the traditional concern with spatiality (the spatiality of countries' territory or the spatiality of travel as in conquering a distance) to that of temporality (the decrease in duration of travel and the subsequently renewed relationship with an evermore instantaneous concept of time). Enjoy!
