I've watched dozens of reviews in the last few days of the NEX-6 and NEX-7, having trouble deciding between the two. Your review was the ONLY ONE that mentioned the issue with the tilt screen not opening on a tripod!!!!! THANK YOU. That helped me make my decision!
Hello, For E-Mount lenses I would go with the 50mm prime, 55-210mm for a zoom and the kit lens to start. I would then consider getting the 35mm prime and or the sigma primes ;) Non e-Mount I would go the old school lens route on Ebay like many us Nex users are doing!! Minolta, MC/ MD, Canon FD, Zeiss, ect.. are all good manual lenses.
It's a hard decision to make, but I would recommend the original Sony 18-200mm for the best optical performance. Then the new Sony 18-200mm fallowed very closely by the tamron. In fact the tamron and new Sony are almost identical.
Hi Jay, thank you for the informative video, I have the NEX-6, and I have struggled to use the manual mode, not knowing exactly how to change the f-stop setting and the exposure time, however, you answered that very important question so very well. One note based on my experience is that the NEX-6 does not have an external audio-in / mic-in port. I was surprised and a bit disappointed with this missing component as I shoot video and almost always I am going to use an external mic, either a lavalier or an XLR mic with a Hosa converter (XLR to the 3..5mm). I did purchase the hot shoe Sony mic ECM-XYST1M, and it is pretty good, but it does pick up the ambient noise as well as the latent echo of the room. I would welcome more videos on using the Appenture and Shutter Priority settings, exactly what can be configured in each and where those settings are appropriate.
I haven't tried the 16-50 but I suspect I will like it for its extra wideness and compact dimension. The 18-55 is not bad, better than 16mm at wide end. But it's got a lot of barrel distortion at wide end and not very sharp at tele end. Also it's quite large, seriously, comparable to the Olympus M. Zuiko 14-150 when both are recessed! But some of the good things I like about NEX kit lenses are that they are virtually silent and better built than most other kit lenses.
Oh yeah there is adapters for everything!! The Nex-6 will not focus as fast as the D7000, but it's pretty quick for sure. The other advantages the Nex-6 offers make it a better choice for a lot of reasons depending on your photography needs. If your a sports shooter I would say no ;) Jay
Thanks for your video. I have the Nikon D7000 and I'm wanting to upgrade to a full-sensor camera. After seeing Sony's alpha 7 and alpha 7r full-sensor mirrorless cameras, I'm slowly deciding to wait to see what Nikon's answer will be to Sony in the mirrorless-full-frame direction. Seems to me that mirrorless will be the future!
Hey Jay. Great review on a great camera. I recently got the NEX-6 and love it. I'm currently in the market for an E mount lens for the NEX-6 and I'm trying to decide between the SEL18200, the SEL18200LE and the Tamron 18-200mm. I would love to get some input from you. Thanks!
Yes it was for me :) The 16mm on the 16-50mm power zoom is even worse than the prime 16mm believe me!! The new 10-18mm however is awesome!! Wish it wasn't so much money though :)
Nice Review Jay! - I currently have a NEX 5N and debating on the NEX 6 but unsure of giving up the touchscreen. My primary use for the camera is Video currently. What are your thoughts between the two. I do miss the opportunity to use a universal hot shoe as well as the built in EVF
Thanks for the reply. If I were to consider options other than E mount lenses (probably going to to need a lens adapter or two sooner or later), which lens/lenses with comparable capabilities would you recommend to use with the NEX-6? Also, if I were to consider getting a few specific lenses like you mentioned, which would you suggest? Thanks!
Yes, it's a pretty good adapter, but a lot of money. It's not as good as having your canon lens on a canon camera either. much slower af performance. Even on the newer model. Still awesome don't get me wrong ;) Jay
Hey Jay,. thank you for this vid, I just watched all your vids on the Nex-6 I'm really considering moving to the mirrorless system , I have Nikon D7000, I'm just an amateur , do you recommend the Nex-6 as a replacement ?, Do you know if there is an adapter for nikon lenses (Samyang 85mm f/1.4),. thank you
argh, Sony the 7 or the 6. how much faster is the 6 focus compared to the 7, so far i really like the 7, but noticed that the focus tends to hunt. is that the same with the 6? OR SHould i just wait if maybe a NEX-8 or a 6.5 comes out?
What about manual focusing, how much improvement of battery life are we talking here? Sony really should make/include a better battery for this camera and that auto pre focus lens really annoying. I really looking forward to this camera, love the evf and the build in flash. But poor battery life, i probably have to think it over.
I have Nikon lenses (50 mm f/1.8g and 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5) and a Nikon 700 SB external flash. Do you think I can use them on Sony NEX 6? What lens adapter would you recommend? Would AF work with that adapter? Thanks in advance.
I would go with the 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens first, because it's great for portraits and stuff like that. If your a street shooter the 20mm f/2.8 prim might be a better option as it's a lot wider and you will get more of the scene in each photo. I hope that helps, Jay
Hey Jay, IMHO it's not worth spending a few hundred dollars more for the 16mm pancake and 18-55 kit zoom when you trade in the 16-50. I have the other two and I don't like the 16mm at all. It's got way too much CA, looks fuzzy already at web resolution.
AH Jay!!! Adam Savage from mythbusters did a talk about camera's and the NEX. he has a metabones adapter on his NEX 7... he loves it! find the video on youtube!

Thanks for the comments and that was a problem on the Nex-7 for sure. Jay
Good points and thanks for the comments!!
Yes in Raw mode it used to, but since the latest update the corners are now fixed ;)
Yes they will work with adapters. The flash will most likely work as well, but will need to be used in manual mode.
Jay

Yup, about 300 per charge or less depending. not sure what you mean about pre-focus?

Although my mind is too slow to get every word, your review is appreciated and helpful. Thanks!
Can you do a video showing how you like to set-up your settings? How to use the focus peaking, toggle the screen on/off, etc?
Thanks for your video. I have the Nikon D7000 and I'm wanting to upgrade to a full-sensor camera. Thanks again for getting back to me! In general, what are the must-have focal lengths when it comes to prime lenses?
Thank you for the comments Charlie!!

Great videos, Jay. Thanks so much for recording them.
Great review, I'm so happy I found out about sonyalphalab.
Yes it was for me :) The 16mm on the 16-50mm power zoom is even worse than the prime 16mm believe me!! The new 10-18mm however is awesome!! Wish it wasn't so much money though :)
Nex-6 is much faster with less hunting do to the new Hybrid AF sensor!! I would go with the Nex-6 or Nex-5r ;)

Very cool, Thanks for the info!!
Jay
Not to much. The screen uses a lot of the juice as well as the EVF. OSS also uses batteries

Just got 5n really good camera , think this could be next step though with the evf and the compact lens , thanks for video !
+cagmito76 get the a6000 its a better option
Hey Jay,. thank you for this vid, I just watched all your vids on the Nex-6

Do you know if there is an adapter for nikon lenses (Samyang 85mm f/1.4),.
thank you
Thanks
Thanks for the reply Jay ,.
Any idea about low light performance comparison between D7000 and Nex-6 ,. ??
How's the battery life, some says it's a let down .. i mean around 300 shots per charge.
Is there away to turn of the lens auto pre focus?
argh, Sony the 7 or the 6. how much faster is the 6 focus compared to the 7, so far i really like the 7, but noticed that the focus tends to hunt. is that the same with the 6?
OR SHould i just wait if maybe a NEX-8 or a 6.5 comes out?
It's very close as the sensor is almost the identical ;)
Jay
Does the NEX-6 have better IQ than the A65? Or is the same?
have you heard of the metabones speed booster adapetr for canon to nex , are you gettiing one? would be great to see a review on it
What about manual focusing, how much improvement of battery life are we talking here?
Sony really should make/include a better battery for this camera and that auto pre focus lens really annoying.
I really looking forward to this camera, love the evf and the build in flash. But poor battery life, i probably have to think it over.
Does the nex 6 have a flat bottom? I hate my 5N raised sections, screws with my QR plates
Does the 16-50mm blacken in the corners? It really bad on my 5N
Yes it does, much better bottom.
What would you recommend for a prime lens for this camera?
I would go with the 50mm f/1.8 OSS Lens first, because it's great for portraits and stuff like that. If your a street shooter the 20mm f/2.8 prim might be a better option as it's a lot wider and you will get more of the scene in each photo.
I hope that helps,
Jay

What pancake lens do you recommend I want as wide as possible?
The wifi will only be turned on when you are trying to connect to a wifi hotspot.
Thank you :)
AH Jay!!! Adam Savage from mythbusters did a talk about camera's and the NEX. he has a metabones adapter on his NEX 7... he loves it! find the video on youtube!
the video is called "adam savage geeks out on camera gear" Enjoy!
Nope, not on the NEX-6
False ;)
