    Bought this camera in 2019 for absolute peanuts, about $150 with the 16-50 pancake kit lens and it’s a fantastic little street camera. Small, discrete, shoots raw, and you can adapt lenses onto it for not much money at all! Still one of my favorites!

    Amazing these older models are still able to use all the E-mount lenses. Sony was very forward thinking when they designed that mount. I still use an A5100 alongside a ZV-E10 and FX3. Super compact and still produces great images.

      Sony-E mount cannot accommodate sensor larger than APS. when full-frame sensor is used on Sony-E, the IBIS system is compromised.

      @@krakapoww I think of the 5100 as a better nex. Wish Sony would give us something this size with refreshed specs. The major setback for video users is the overheating that limits long form video, mic jack and battery life. There are workarounds but would be nice to have it all in 1 package so you don't have to rig it out.

    The Sony NEX 6 was my introduction to mirrorless back in 2012. I can't tell you how many different vintage lenses I adapted to it but I'm pretty sure I've done most of them. I still have it and use it daily as my dedicated ebay product shooting camera. Today I use a Sony a7 full frame camera. Bonus, both cameras share the same battery and of coarse they share the same lens mount. So all those adapters still work :)

    The Nex 6 has twice as many pixels in the viewfinder as the alpha 6000 that succeeded it which makes it more pleasant and easier to focus with old lenses. I think that the nex 5T (the same sensor as the nex 6) together with the viewfinder that comes as an accessory makes the 5T an even better option, since it can put the LCD in selfie mode (by pulling out the viewfinder) and it is also one of the few Sony cameras with full touchscreen, that is, with the touch function you can control everything, from zooming in on the photos to changing in the menu and even writing the router's passwords or when browsing. It can also be controlled from the phone like the a-6000 and use the playmemories app.

    I was an early adopter of the Sony mirrorless when I first took up photography, starting with the C3 but exchanged it for the 5N. When the 6 came out it seemed like perfection. I remember distinctly nearly everyone into photography dismissed the mirrorless as toys that will never be taken seriously or used professionally. I didn't really understand this since they really aren't that different, just looses the mirror and thus optical viewfinder. Over the years the gaps in lenses were filled and soon overlapped by more expensive options, budget options, and everything for everyone. I still have my NEX-6 but am looking to replace it as the sensor really did not age well, unlike the gem in the a6x0 series.

    At first i thought that i will replace it with an A6000 in future, but i really see no point for it. When it gets broken i will buy another NEX6.

    I love your videos and your content. NEX-6 was a dream camera 7 years ago, and still is brutally excellent as you have explained. NEX-6 has two major limitations: no IBIS, and 1.5x FoV factor. Still, I'd say that for manual (vintage) lenses I'd pick a camera with in body image stabilization and full frame FoV with EVF of course. In this regard (far) the best option is A7II (IBIS+EVF+FF) $700 - $900. Olympus cameras have excellent IBIS (OM-D M5s are around $300), too, but then you need a Speedbooster ($400) to mitigate the enormous 2x factor. So, whatever option I take into consideration, A7II is the most versatile option for manual lenses as for price/performance.

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  2 роки тому +1

      The A7 series takes some beating for use with vintage lenses - and no speedboosters required!

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 2 роки тому

      @@zenography7923 Z6 could be another option since it has FTZ and possibly other adapters and IBIS, but the full-frame E-mount system is so much better supported that practically there is no competition in this regard. The closed dead-end-like nature of Z and RF mounts makes the Nikon/Canon Z/RF cameras are far less appealing options when versatility and overall support and usability is important.

    Thanks for the video.
    Just a note with respect to manual and vintage lenses - I've found that focus peaking in the NEX 6 and NEX 5 is hard to see and doesn't work so well at large apertures (like f/1.4) on close subjects (my cat).
    The solution is simple - set the Focus Magnifier function to the Wireless button, and use it to get the focus precisely correct.
    Regards.

    I typically mount a 70-350mm lens on my A6000 and a 18-50mm f/2.8 on my NEX6 to minimize lens changes. They fit in my 10L bag along with a prime lens if I think I may need it. The NEX6 actually has a *better* EVF. But it has a much less capable AF system, a much more frustrating menu, fewer controls and options, can’t memorize settings, and somewhat noisier sensor. But it’s very handy when I want to quickly switch lenses. The high resolution EVF makes the NEX6 particularly well suited for manual focus shooting where the AF deficiencies don’t matter. When I eventually upgrade from the A6000, I’ll probably keep all three bodies, dedicating the NEX6 to manual focus.

    Its focus peaking, as you said, is the best by far, and since all the old lenses have manual aperture control, I am quite happy with its single dial.

These are all 50mm lenses and will give an effective focal length of 75mm on your camera. Hi, a New Zealand owner here. Great video! I bought my NEX-6 in 2013. At the time the NEX-5T and NEX-7 were out too. I liked the build quality and capabilities of the '6. The '5T was similar in capability, had a touch screen but no EVF. The '7 had a nice build too but if I recall correctly only had contrast detect based AF whereas the '6 was one of the first hybrid contrast/phase detect AF systems. I do like the rangefinder form factor; I have three native E-mount lenses and also purchased an inexpensive E-mount to MD Rokkor mount adaptor to use my father's Minolta 58mm f1.4 Rokkor and Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 (both fantastic lenses too). Yes, totally agree; a nice camera with some handling foibles - another control dial might be nice...

    Thanks for this, I liked what you said about the colours... is it possible that the colours are actually better than the a6000... Mmmm hard to tell but it is possible... Actually on a 4K display screen I you can just about tell the difference between 16 and 24 MPix if you look closely.... my screen is roughly A3 size. However as printed A3 would be somewhat lower resolution than on a screen I doubt if you could see the difference even close up at that size... 24 megapixels and what do you get another day older and deeper in debt...! BTW my feeling is that the newer Sony 18-135 would do exceptionally well on this camera, I am going to give that a try...

    I have a Canon 5D Mark I and no money to buy modern lenses for it. I have a growing passion for vintage glass and it troubles me that I cant adapt some of it. I'm thinking of switching over to the NEX 6 because of the low weight and possibilities, but it troubles me that the image quality seems very very worse. What do you think?

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  3 роки тому +1

      Image quality from the Nex 6 in my experience is very nice indeed but, of course, it's not full frame. That doesn't mean images will be necessarily less good, but they will have a different character, especially when used with vintage lenses, as you'll lose roughly the outer third of a shot when compared with full frame. Vintage lenses will still work very nicely, as you'll see from the video, but not quite the same as on a full frame sensor, so it really depends what you want to achieve. I was very happy with the images I made using vintage lenses on this camera, but if you want full frame, a used A7 Mark 1 might suit you better?

    • @raulrodrigues2307
      @raulrodrigues2307 3 роки тому

      @@zenography7923 It does and would be perfect. But its really hard to find one and I dont think I can afford it. For me photography is a hobby and I do mainly macro and product photography (vintage lens repair/restoration and test, thats why full frame matters). For example, here in Brazil the prices are somewhat prohibite, the cheapest you can find (used), is a NEX5 costing 120USD, NEX6 costing 250USD, a5000 350USD, a6000 600USD and a7 I at ~950USD. My 5D Mark I costed me 250USD, for example. Our minimum wage monthly is 190USD. I dont think I can pay more than 500 USD for a camera body, thats why my thoughs are between the NEX6 and the a6000 (to be honest, both because of the viewfinder); with the a6000 costing two times more than the NEX6, I dont know if the price justifies the image quality and improved features. Seems I wont get an upgrade spending two times what the 5D is worth, I guess I better forget about SR and FD glass for now, haha.

      @zenography7923  3 роки тому +1

      There is a difference - with aps-c (unless you use a speedbooster) you'll lose roughly the outer third of your shot compared to full frame. The character of the lens still comes through, and I've shot many, many images on aps-c with vintage lenses that I'm very happy with. But, the image won't be quite the same as that from a full frame sensor.

      Unlike newer bodies like the a5100, which many say overheats in 16-20min, the NEX-6 never does. It may have to do with the metal body. Also, there was a free, non-destructive hack that unlock the recording limit past 30 min. I think I have recorder for at least 45min in one take, and you're only limited by how worn out your battery is, or card space. All in all, the NEX-6 continues to deliver in 2021!

    How do you store all your lenses to stop them getting fungus or haze? I'm getting a collection now and this summer has been pretty humid, heard some horror stories and now I'm seeing all these expensive electric Dry Cabitnets pop up on my search engine. Are they just Snake Oil or are they worth it?

    • @zenography7923
      @zenography7923  3 роки тому +1

      In theory a guaranteed dry cabinet must be of help in storing lenses - but how one achieves that is the question! I store my lenses in a cabinet with plenty of water absorbing material - a few shot glasses filled with rice seems to do the trick! Also, any moisture that gets into the lens via humidity (which may not be that much in fact) will fade as the humidity in the air drops too. Fungus and haze usually only develop in lenses stored for a long time in very adverse conditions - years in a damp garage for example - they're pretty resistant if looked after.
      Personally I wouldn't worry too much - as long as you're not taking your lenses out in the rain I don't think you'll go too far wrong!

      @@zenography7923 Yes, i meant the EVF of course, not OVF, it's not an DSLR. :) My X-E1/E2 are really better into this regard. But the NEX-6 still delivers, because it's tiny - and even the (considered "bad" lens due to much lens distortion) Kitlens, which i personally dislike, because it's a PowerZoom, not mechanical linked, still does deliver fine IQ, with the proven, good DR (same DR as the 24 MP A6000 Sensor, but 16 - which is still plenty, into 2022+ and beyond). Same Sensor is into the Nikon D7000 DSLR, which i do also own.
      The thing is, for snapshots, or the unexpected picture, the NEX-6 even with the "poor" 16-50 OSS simple delivers, and some of my images have good depth, or 3D Pop with that slow Kitlens.

      Still I would suggest buying Fujifilm X-T1 now - it is fantastic camera and it has decent price tag for the ones who want to stay in less than 1 pound of weight and less than 18mpx class religiously (my last Sony cameras are a7siii full frame and a7Riii crop, giving me 12MP native and 18MP in crop mode, though way too heavy for hiking; my last Fujifilm X-T4 is also way too heavy/bulky for APS-C, feels like electronic box with buttons and violates effective pixel size rule = excessive 26mpx). IMHO the only thing X-T1 missing comparing to NEX-6 is intelligent auto scene selection and in-camera HDR (it has multi-bracketing with option to combine shots later in lightroom, but 3-shoot-seequence is way too slow to use for in-hands-shooting and needs a tripod for late evening/low sun or cloudy day, when I need bracketing most)
