Playing it for the first time. When I got to the second map, their was a moment while walking down the plains of Africa, the wind was blowing hard and the sky was clear, the sun shining in the sky that I went “this world is beautiful.” Seriously one of my favorite environments in a game, up there with morrowind and the planets of the KOTOR games.
Yeah cause what you're doing is morally wrong (betraying your old friends in rdr and killing passive stone cow things in sotc) In Far Cry 2 your not a hero, but your not a villain, simply a boring mercenary that would usually be the people you kill in other games.

Those npcs mean something to you when they get fatally wounded is because they were the only things that you ecoutered in the game world that didn't shoot you on sight and wasn't a Wildebeest.
What I like about this game is how it is subtle. The story is subtle: you aren't saving some area from great oppression. You are in a small, neglected corner of africa. The gameplay is also subtle: it is a part of the beautiful world. You have to improvise, no matter what you do, putting you under stress. Because of this, the game is a blast to play if you switch on your brain while you play. The game never takes you out: there are never any levels where you HAVE to play in one way in a cut off section of the game. I love this, and I wish they would consider this more.
I agree wholeheartedly. It really feels like a sandbox, and is one of the purest entries in the series as a result of how it handles it's world. I really want Ubi to do another one like this; proper down to earth and gritty but I feel that that time has passed unfortunately
I was about 14 years old when I fist got Far Cry 2. And to this date, FC2 is the only game in the franchise that feels and plays out as a Far Cry game to me. I remember it being almost scary to play, the jamming, malaria, AI who helped each-others back on their feet or crawled to cover still posing a threat and the pretty bad stealth made it pretty gnarly. Really felt lost and alone in a punishing open world game. This first experience made me think twice before returning and replaying it. But when I did it was so good. Too bad the Far Cry franchise have taken the turn it did, because somewhere in the newer games, a great game is hiding. Also great video, really like how you brought this back to the light!
This is indeed...you can judge me for saying this but “Far Cry 2 is the true mother of the series”. So much work was actually put into making this game if they were to remake this game it would be still, the best one. 3,4,5 and primal couldn’t deliver that struggle for realistic gameplay expectations. When the HUD is full of Icons you lost the fullness of the visual perception of the game. Then take all of the other settings like the menu and your mind is out of the meat of the game. Farcry 2 defines real. Mercs don’t act for movies. It’s suppose to feel as if you were actually in Africa... scratch that just landed in Africa. They did a wonderful job.
Why is every reviewer saying that there is no fast travel system? There is! You can use the bus stations to fast travel. You can skip a lot of driving wehen you use these stations.
The bus stops were only in the far corners of the map, it still took forever to reach them, endless car chases and obligatory radiator fixes with a wrench included.
Thanks for this video. I have to admit, I hated Far Cry 2 when it came out. Mostly because it was such a huge departure from the simplistic open world of Far Cry 1 which I loved. I hated the jamming guns, the respawning outposts, the heavy traversal etc... But I love the Far Cry series with FC3 being my favourite until I decided to give FC2 another shot last year. Now 9 years older and more seasoned as a gamer I LOVED Far Cry 2. Everything I hated about it at first was everything I actually loved about it now. The African savanah in my opinion is the best environment in any Far Cry game with Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 1's tropical setting coming in a very close second. Playing FC2 with the HD textures and realistic lighting mod made the game probably the best looking in the series, even now. This had a lot to do with it's environment too. Also, the fact you could shoot through thin walls and how the physics were so fleshed out, the more modern Far Cry games seem gimped in comparison. They removed a lot of features from the engine in order to make the game look better but in my opinion by doing that they took out a lot of the character of what made Far Cry 2 great.
I have no idea why the physics were dumbed down for later releases. The game world interaction was absolutely brilliant with Far Cry 2, each light and most small objects could be destroyed etc. and in the African Savannah (which is the best setting haha) it just felt so real. I don't know if a remaster would be awesome, but I don't think it would sell very well unfortunately, good idea though. Thanks for the comments btw I hope you enjoyed the video.
Thing is, Far Cry 2 shouldn't be treated as a sequel to Far Cry. The real 'sequel' or rather spiritual successor is Crysis, while FC2 takes some Crysis ideas and puts them in an open world with extra attention to detail. FC2 is its own thing, and a unique one at that.

He went abroad to fight for the rights of his people, but never reuturned. He lost his legs because of an explosion, causing him to bleed to death.
Judging from the sequels with their icons and mini-maps all over the screen, xray vision through buildings and obstacles, environment features like trees and bushes that don't react to gunfire and explosions...the developers really didn't seem to realize or care about what made Far Cry 2 so fantastically immersive. Apart from the innocuous health bar in bottom left, all you see is your weapon and the world around you. With music off you hear the wind rustling in the trees and the sounds of the jungle...and when the shit hits the fan it's a fight for survival against a determined enemy. Far Cry 2 isn't perfect, but it drops you in a world that is believable enough for you to go along and get lost in - and it's a hell of a ride.
It's funny when people nowadays (some of them) able to apreciate this game, ever since i was a little lad & first this game came out on Xbox i play the hell out of it. Glad to say that i still visits this game once in a while, everything about this game is definitely awesome.
I honestly really really like the way that the RPG works, the way that missiles are actual things and not just big explosive bullets and how its malfunction is so different from almost anything else
Really nice vid. FC2 is my favorite, hands down. Agree with what you had to said 110% apart from the voice acting. It was a little dull and lifeless. Really disappointed there was no mention of the online multiplayer, the awesome freedom of choice in the online game lobby system or the fantastic and easy to use map editor that is still the best in the entire Far Cry series. It spawned a loyal online map making community that is STILL going to this day! Far Cry 2 is now a 10 year old game. Wish they would just remaster it for the PS4 already.
Thank you dude, Whilst I still Believe it has great voice acting I can definitely see your point. The reason for not mentioning the Multiplayer is due mostly to the fact that I just never played it. I played the shit out of the map editor though, what an amazing tool. In hindsight I should have mentioned it, however the video was mostly focused on the single player experience.
A remaster would be soo cool. However I played it recently on the PC with the high res texture pack and another mod that added more colour and it was just beautiful. Graphics hold up even today.
I think the fast travel mechanism is actually good... Don't get me wrong, I love the fact in newer games where you can just teleport to wherever you want, BUT this made the entire fast travel thing more realistic. When you fast travel, not only time during the day actually passes but I guess you get closer to the next malaria attack. However, there are certain situations that I would ONLY use buses to get around and if you do it during the night for example you get to your destination in the morning which definitely helps completing the mission where you can actually see what you're doing. Its also the safest way to travel by far, not having to deal with constant checkpoints and armed patrols and random things happening on the way. One more downside tho is that you miss potential places to find diamonds. For me almost everything in this game made sense for the enviorment you were set at, and still holds to be my most favourite FC game to date.
What i like the most about it is immersion and free-roam action; both missing since 3. Now at least 5 has the free-roam mayhem back so even though you liberate outposts, the streets continue to be hostile. And let's not forget about the Arcade Mode... that might be an interesting feature.
Yeah you're right. Not that 3 or 4 were bad. But they just weren't on the same level of immersion that Far Cry 2 was. I think 5 looks interesting, not only for the points you just mentioned, but they're also bringing buddies back too. I'm not sure of the arcade mode though. I think my next video will be a on Far Cry 5 and the comparisons to the other titles, just before it releases
Nice, i'll be on the lookout for that video. I would recommend you to turn your voiceover volume a little higher because it was difficult to discern some words; especially while crunching my cookies.
I agree it is a great game with gameplay elements that are often perceived as flaws. It does not have great voice acting, at least by the storyline characters; the enemies have great lines and their vocal patterns fit with the time and place of each battle. Also, the hang glider is available in the first map. It is necessary to get to two diamonds (One just north of Pala, and one just north of Goka Falls.)
Just to add more detail; as a former 'bit player' for 40 years in the 'cold war', it is the utter realism that grips you. The characters are so typical, the civil war is what has happened right up to present times - & will continue no doubt. The characters are pretty realistic - I've met Vorhees types before! The landscape & fauna are excellent. The buildings/towns/details are perfect. The head up prompts are minimal. There is also so much to be discovered towards the edge of the mapped area. I actually feel I'm there. And finally, every time I replay it, things happen differently. A true classic.
When playing Far Cry 2 recently I felt sick playing it. Not sick in the sense of what was being seen, or done, but sick in the sense of unease. It wasn’t like the dopamine rush that occurred frequently while playing other shooters, it was just a slog. I felt tired. The drab colors and futility of the plot, conflict, etc. just killed me. Then it hit me. I’m not used to this type of game. As the merc isn’t used to the UAC. This game is alien to me. I’m not meant to play this. I’m an interloper here. This game is, from it’s very foundation, a metaphor. And the fact next to nobody ever looks into this game, or even plays it, is a travesty.
Far Cry 2 - best ever - been playing it for 10 years. More like a 'special forces' training aid. Different every time. xBoxOneS, with a 55inch 3.8k smart TV. Awesome.
You do know that you can explore the whole map and get hidden diamonds and jackal tapes right? That kind of fills your exploring gripe. Did you not know that on the upper left corner of each map is the number of diamonds hidden in each section. The blinking green light on the gps means there is a diamond near by. Come on man.
Yes I am aware of that, that doesn't really constitute "exploring" in my book. It's very grindy and doesn't have much reward, no-one really went around looking for the diamonds unless they had to. It was more something done as you drove past locations and noticed the light blinking.
The 10th Floor how is having to actually look for diamonds a grind? One can easly beat the game without getting a single Dimond (minus the ones you get payed with) also exploring is part of the reward and how is more money for upgrades and new weapons not a reward, especially considering the harsh environment and limited savepoint gameplay (at least on console). Just because you can't be bothered to explore does mean it's not exploring. Tell me what exploration mecanic would you put in?
Anonymous the diamonds are limited? There are anywhere between 2 and 12 dimond cases in each of the 9 chunks of the map, in both regions, with multiple diamonds in each case. There is just enough diamonds in Farcry 2 to buy everything. So how are they limited?

Awesome video!! The game was free for two weeks on Xbox live, now thousands of people playing it, I am hosting user-created maps all day, on dedicated servers. The map editor and the lobby system is the bespoke in the series, shame on later Ubi developers, never able to achieve this again.
I loved my time with it on PS3, all the online matches and grinding the field manuals. Even though my KDR left a lot to desire. I still liked it a lot. The single player campaign was fine too.

Having loved games like MGSV, Red Dead 2, Witcher 3, TLOU2 etc etc, Far Cry 2 remains one of my all time favourites. They absolutely went in the wrong direction after it, trying to make it palatable to the mainstream.
Goddamn right man. As much as I enjoy FC3 and so on, they just don't have that edge that this game does. No matter how many crazy wildcard villains they have or cool takedowns and such (I like all of those though), FC2 really did nail an atmosphere that is pretty unique; especially so considering it's an FPS. The Tenth Floor loved TLOU2, but took me two playthroughs to get to that stage. The first run, I didn’t know what to feel. The second time all the little nuances were clearer and all the questions were answered. And yeah dude! My problem with FC3 and beyond is that you feel like a superpowered hero very quickly. I loved FC2 because you start out getting your ass beat for hours, but you simply get better at surviving and fighting and setting ambushes to even the odds, all without needing “cool” perks and upgrades. It felt so real and if you dropped your guard that was it. Another thing was the lack of checkpoints. Raised the blood pressure through the roof during encounters or else you would have to redo 30 mins of gameplay lol. So it led to insane tension. Honestly I feel like returning to it haha. Looking forward to your LOU2 video bud. When do you think it’ll be out?
I enjoy this game immensely, and I get what the story was trying to say, I did really enjoy the ambition and amount of effort they put into making this game stand out, but the story and characters never really compelling to me and I honestly got bored of the repetitive missions and constant spawning turret cars, overall a decent game and it’s cheap so I do think it’s worth checking out, but it has mechanics that I personally wasn’t too fond of. Also stellar voice acting? They probably had some of the blandest voice acting I’ve ever heard, I get that was the point but intentional or not it’s still bland. I just found myself more engaged with the sequels, but hey that’s my opinion and you brought up great points in the video.
Another problem with FC2 is the game breaking glitches. I want to do an APR mission. But the game won't let me. I kill the guy at the door. Run from town. Come back to the same door. And then the game decides that I can do an APR mission. This ruins the realism.
Yeah, I've got to agree. I think it would be best if they only respawned once you'd been away 24 in game hours or something like that. Then when they did they moved in via trucks or something to retake it... would have been cool
But those negative experience were like hard times which paid off after completion of story. So, like real life with no shortcuts instincts, weak A.I etc. FC2 A.I was tough
Loved it for 360 back in 09 when I played it first I was late but I enjoy it for 100s of hours and I just got I for free of the Xbox games with gold bout to enjoy this gem
Great analysis! I beat FarCry 2 on the PC, but it bugged out on me on the PS3, 3x! I figured if I was going to 100% the game, I was going to do it on console for the trophies. But each time I got a progression bug. This time: medicine quest 2 failed. After handing over the documents, the malaria gets me, I spawn at the church, and then I am given the same quest, which I can not complete! Same bug, different NPC/quest! If I get the jimmies to play this again I'll try the X360 first : /. ---------------- I looked it up and apparently this is a meme. I'm not the only one bitten by this bug(s). Odd seeing it today, so spoiled. Even if a game is broken at release, it's generally fixed nowadays.
It feels even more like a brilliant progenitor, when you play Far Cry 1, 2 and 3 in a row, and see how much FC3 is the love child of almost every mechanic and aspect encountered in previous 2 games. Reused FC2 ammo pickup sounds in FC3 remind you of the roots. Vehicles, vast wilderness, explosions, blending into the nature to fight your enemies, outposts, wildlife, human conflicts, freedom of approach, lovely arsenals and interesting approach to health systems - all these and more feel like they naturally bloomed in FC3 because previous games made necessary steps.

I just started this game and looked rly incredible, since I like realism maybe i could enjoy it even better than the fc3, however this bug just ruins the whole experience, thanks for responding me, nice review btw >^
far cry 2, the closest far cry will get to a survival game, no overpowered modern, polished, and very clean military weapons, only outdated, rusty, dirty, weapons
If I could remake the game, I would flesh out the setting just a little bit more, in terms of the things living in it. Although the natural environment truly felt immersive (and I tell you that as a person who lived in Africa for years) but it was missing a few elements, firstly no civilians or villages. There is no warzone in the world where civilians are completely absent. Secondly, Pala doesn't feel like a town, let alone a city important enough to be the headquarters of the warring factions. It should've been expanded a little bit, I understand that would limit space in other parts of the game, but I don't think it would take too much out. Thirdly, the factions never fight one another out in the world. For a country in the middle of a civil war, there doesn't seem to be much warring. Sure you could argue there is a ceasefire in place, but where's the fun in that? Fourth, and last, a quite minor gripe that was addressed in the newer installments, the lack of wildlife. I mean, its Africa, a place thats known for its beautiful and varied wildlife, but again thats just a very minor gripe. The game was great, but those are just some elements I feel like its missing.
The game was unfinished. Story parts made no sense, a lack in depth was covered with far too many and fast respawning enemies. It was one of the biggest disappointments at that time. I played it the first two days and then I was sick of killing the same three dudes rushing in in a off-roader every 30 seconds. Pretty bad game design and a shame for the beautiful engine.

I disagree, I think the voice acting fits perfectly with the story. The warlords aren't meant to be deep villains, they're just thugs that you work for. The way the jackal talks is completely different, as he's one of the major major plot devices. He feels like more of a "Character". All the other dialogue sounds authentic as well
I thought the Jackal's voice acting was too fast and it was like the voice actor was just reading the lines without pausing. The other voice acting was ok but I wouldn't say the voice acting as a whole was "stellar".
Fun Fact: you can do slowmotion/bullet time mode for this game actually pretty much any game if you want i can tell you how to do it its simple and quick just reply to me if u are interested
@@messer7450 it's easy you just need a software called cheat engine just download it basiclly its a cheat program for any game but what iv'e found out about this it has a hidden control speed of the game aka (slow motion/bullet time) ok now when you downloaded it just open the cheat engine then go to the upper settings on the left side you should see HotKeys press it now i know you have lots of hotkeys in there but here are the 2 you need to use slow motion Toggle The Speed Hack : press it and go right youll see a small type bar that says hotkey on top of it , PUT A KEY THAT YOU WISH TO MAKE YOU GAME AT NORMAL SPEED i use H next Speedhack speed 1 press it and youll see a nother type bar But under it has a speed selection press the speed and type 0.30 and on the hotkey on top PRESS ANY KEY TO START THE SLOW MOTION i use G i know its grenades so i replace the throw grenades option and then you press OK at the bottom to save it and there u go just 2 things at speedhack speed keys it actiavates the slow motion and toggle the speed hack sets the game speed back to normal so basicly i press G to activate and shoot and once im done shooting i just press H also if your new to cheat engine to make sure the cheat engine works on any game open the cheat engine go top and left and youll see a small computer box glowing like rainbow press it and it will show you procces list its easy from here just pick a GAME EXE for example my far cry 2 is on i just minimize the game OR alt and Tab to hide it and i press the computer box i see far cry exe press it then go back to the game and press G/any hotkey you put, now wait a few seconds around 5 seconds it will start and you SHOULD HEAR A COMPUTER DING SOUND OR SOMETHING that means it worked if you still didnt understand me we can talk on discord and ill show you what to do
any gamer friend who I've ever respected as both an individual and as a gamer and friend (list is fucking short my guys) have loved this game just as much as me. that's enough argument I think. anyone who actually loves games, and who has loved videogames before gaming became really mainstream, seems to like this game and, at best, seem to be divided on the following ones.
My favorite farcry game to date!! The only thing that really bothers me about this game, is the bolts and ejection ports on the guns... damn things are in the wrong side! I know its probably to show off the animations and stuff, but damnit it's annoying sometimes lol.
I'm love far cry 2 more than far cry 3thru 5 the story was awesome and challenging but everyone keeps forgetting what set far cry apart from say call of duty,battlefield or well almost any fps there was. The map editor. To this day with fc3 and fc4 and fc5 the map editor sorry to say none where as good as far cry 2s was. At one point across all systems PC,ps4,Xbox there where over 200,000 maps. Up until early 2018 great maps where still being made. The best part was total lobby control,the ability to have a playlist of maps from one to whatever team death,death match,capture the diamond and shit I forget the name of the other mode anyway you could have a list say 20 maps before each one started the host could do anything change weather on the map time of dsay level players start at win requirements how many people on a team what type of match between the four modes start when you wanted in game players could vote to skip vote to continue before time ran out you name it you could do it that's what started many many many different fan sites across all systems just about making and playing maps that are way more creative than anything Ubisoft ever came up with they really should remake far cry don't change it at all any of it just HD it and release it I bet it will be one of the best sellers of the year
The shooting and missions are fun. But all the driving is what turns me away. And there is no point doing a bonus objective for the mercenaries. They always need to be rescued at the end. I could understand if they needed rescuing occasionally, but every mission? These are some very incompetent mercs........
Driving could be better if there were some music. But having to deal with *one* random enemy driving in a car every 3-5 minutes is so annoying. It's not challenging either. Jyat stop your car. Shoot one or two guys. Get back in car. And repeat this until you reach your destination. The game could have used other ways to be more alive and feel realistic. In fact, realistically, it makes no sense how enemy marcs automatically know that I am not one of them. 👀
@@bigsmoke3617 I agree with both of your points here, and I think if it was made in 2019 it would not be very well received for that kind of thing. With the driving, I believe it can be given a bit of leniency, I mean the game is almost 11 years old, its not terrible driving experience, its just sub par by current standards. However, I think the merc missions as you stated were very flat and one dimensional, incompetent is a good description. Also, it would be cool to have at least a little bit of incognito when driving, good idea. But for 2008 and it still being relatively untouched ground for Ubisoft it was a solid attempt
@@TheTenthFloor I noticed that it is safer walking because you can hide in bushes and grasses. But it takes a million times longer to reach the destination.
It seemed to me that the whole buddy system is basically a diversion to trick you into doing worse shit for almost no gain and at a detriment to your time. Assassinate a prince for me, destroy medical supplies, kill the bounty hunters after me, etc. All you get is very, very slight upgrades to your safehouse. It's a total waste of time that only perpetuates the violence and suffering in the setting. I like it thematically, but a decade later, I just don't ever bother with the buddy missions.

I like far cry 2 but it had some REALLY bad issues. Like bad stealth, lack of fast travel points, pin point enemies on top 2 hardest difficulty, repetitive missions, no ability to bring your buddy
Normally I would argue that fast traveling is a game breaking core mechanic. Players should be rewarded for exploring the world and not relying on fast traveling between points. But in FC 2, one or two more fast travle points would be a nice addition. It got a little tedious spending so much time behind the wheel.
The stealth is as close to reality as you can get, and I personally love it. Lack of fast travels is, as was said in the video, not really a bad thing, remember this is an FPS nor an RPG and the map is not THAT big really. I don't know what you mean by pin point enemies on top 2 hardest difficulty so I'm just going to ignore that. The missions are repetitive, that's true. And, again, not an RPG, so no ability to bring your buddy with you. Also, why would you want that? The AI would definitely be terrible and it would only hinder you and your experience. Though on that last point, I feel the game could be an AMAZING experience if you were able to bring your friends (like, actual real life people) into the game, hosting your game and have someone join you through LAN connetion or something.
@@ScurvyBoi Never really thought about the stealth in FC2 that way. Guess Ive just grown so used to the stealth mechanics being extremely unrealistic in most games.
@@markusnss Indeed, I grew up with those mechanics too and Far Cry 2 can be frustrating at times but it is realistic. I think true stealth is shooting everyone from a long distance with a sniper, not infiltration. IRL infiltration is bound to get you caught as soon as you complete the objective, and then it's just run for your life with the escape vehicle you planned to use.

Actually annoying to see Ubisoft not looking back at their early work and implementing its features and details to the newer games in the franchise. To me FarCry 4 and especially 5 feels so distracted and distant from what FarCry was, and had to offer.
Still of the best in the series for me and still looks really good. The gun mechanics, and sound, malaria issues, open world beauty, awesome fire physics which still beats many games of now and story. Really loved if

hated fc2 myself. loved the original far cry and expected more of the same. got same old greeny brown textures for hours. missions were all the same, drive somewhere and kill everyone in camp, repeat the above.

When I got to the second map, their was a moment while walking down the plains of Africa, the wind was blowing hard and the sky was clear, the sun shining in the sky that I went “this world is beautiful.” Seriously one of my favorite environments in a game, up there with morrowind and the planets of the KOTOR games.

Yeah cause what you're doing is morally wrong (betraying your old friends in rdr and killing passive stone cow things in sotc) In Far Cry 2 your not a hero, but your not a villain, simply a boring mercenary that would usually be the people you kill in other games.

Those npcs mean something to you when they get fatally wounded is because they were the only things that you ecoutered in the game world that didn't shoot you on sight and wasn't a Wildebeest.

FarCry 2 was truly ahead of its time. What an amazing game not many gamers nowadays have even heard of. What a shame
What I like about this game is how it is subtle. The story is subtle: you aren't saving some area from great oppression. You are in a small, neglected corner of africa. The gameplay is also subtle: it is a part of the beautiful world. You have to improvise, no matter what you do, putting you under stress. Because of this, the game is a blast to play if you switch on your brain while you play.
The game never takes you out: there are never any levels where you HAVE to play in one way in a cut off section of the game. I love this, and I wish they would consider this more.
I agree wholeheartedly. It really feels like a sandbox, and is one of the purest entries in the series as a result of how it handles it's world. I really want Ubi to do another one like this; proper down to earth and gritty but I feel that that time has passed unfortunately
I was about 14 years old when I fist got Far Cry 2. And to this date, FC2 is the only game in the franchise that feels and plays out as a Far Cry game to me. I remember it being almost scary to play, the jamming, malaria, AI who helped each-others back on their feet or crawled to cover still posing a threat and the pretty bad stealth made it pretty gnarly. Really felt lost and alone in a punishing open world game. This first experience made me think twice before returning and replaying it. But when I did it was so good. Too bad the Far Cry franchise have taken the turn it did, because somewhere in the newer games, a great game is hiding. Also great video, really like how you brought this back to the light!

This is indeed...you can judge me for saying this but “Far Cry 2 is the true mother of the series”. So much work was actually put into making this game if they were to remake this game it would be still, the best one. 3,4,5 and primal couldn’t deliver that struggle for realistic gameplay expectations. When the HUD is full of Icons you lost the fullness of the visual perception of the game. Then take all of the other settings like the menu and your mind is out of the meat of the game. Farcry 2 defines real. Mercs don’t act for movies. It’s suppose to feel as if you were actually in Africa... scratch that just landed in Africa. They did a wonderful job.

Why is every reviewer saying that there is no fast travel system? There is! You can use the bus stations to fast travel. You can skip a lot of driving wehen you use these stations.
The bus stops were only in the far corners of the map, it still took forever to reach them, endless car chases and obligatory radiator fixes with a wrench included.

Thanks for this video. I have to admit, I hated Far Cry 2 when it came out. Mostly because it was such a huge departure from the simplistic open world of Far Cry 1 which I loved. I hated the jamming guns, the respawning outposts, the heavy traversal etc... But I love the Far Cry series with FC3 being my favourite until I decided to give FC2 another shot last year. Now 9 years older and more seasoned as a gamer I LOVED Far Cry 2. Everything I hated about it at first was everything I actually loved about it now. The African savanah in my opinion is the best environment in any Far Cry game with Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 1's tropical setting coming in a very close second. Playing FC2 with the HD textures and realistic lighting mod made the game probably the best looking in the series, even now. This had a lot to do with it's environment too.
Also, the fact you could shoot through thin walls and how the physics were so fleshed out, the more modern Far Cry games seem gimped in comparison. They removed a lot of features from the engine in order to make the game look better but in my opinion by doing that they took out a lot of the character of what made Far Cry 2 great.
I have no idea why the physics were dumbed down for later releases. The game world interaction was absolutely brilliant with Far Cry 2, each light and most small objects could be destroyed etc. and in the African Savannah (which is the best setting haha) it just felt so real. I don't know if a remaster would be awesome, but I don't think it would sell very well unfortunately, good idea though.

Thing is, Far Cry 2 shouldn't be treated as a sequel to Far Cry. The real 'sequel' or rather spiritual successor is Crysis, while FC2 takes some Crysis ideas and puts them in an open world with extra attention to detail. FC2 is its own thing, and a unique one at that.

Anyway, I have a friend from Gambia and he said, that Baaba Maal (who was the sénégali "king of pop") in the main theme sings about a young warrior from Sénégal named Menyu Gannar. He went abroad to fight for the rights of his people, but never reuturned. He lost his legs because of an explosion, causing him to bleed to death.
Judging from the sequels with their icons and mini-maps all over the screen, xray vision through buildings and obstacles, environment features like trees and bushes that don't react to gunfire and explosions...the developers really didn't seem to realize or care about what made Far Cry 2 so fantastically immersive. Apart from the innocuous health bar in bottom left, all you see is your weapon and the world around you. With music off you hear the wind rustling in the trees and the sounds of the jungle...and when the shit hits the fan it's a fight for survival against a determined enemy. Far Cry 2 isn't perfect, but it drops you in a world that is believable enough for you to go along and get lost in - and it's a hell of a ride.
It's funny when people nowadays (some of them) able to apreciate this game, ever since i was a little lad & first this game came out on Xbox i play the hell out of it.
Glad to say that i still visits this game once in a while, everything about this game is definitely awesome.

Really disappointed there was no mention of the online multiplayer, the awesome freedom of choice in the online game lobby system or the fantastic and easy to use map editor that is still the best in the entire Far Cry series. It spawned a loyal online map making community that is STILL going to this day! Far Cry 2 is now a 10 year old game.

Thank you dude, Whilst I still Believe it has great voice acting I can definitely see your point. The reason for not mentioning the Multiplayer is due mostly to the fact that I just never played it. I played the shit out of the map editor though, what an amazing tool. In hindsight I should have mentioned it, however the video was mostly focused on the single player experience.
A remaster would be soo cool. However I played it recently on the PC with the high res texture pack and another mod that added more colour and it was just beautiful. Graphics hold up even today.

My favorite farcry, loved everything about this game..
I think the fast travel mechanism is actually good... Don't get me wrong, I love the fact in newer games where you can just teleport to wherever you want, BUT this made the entire fast travel thing more realistic. When you fast travel, not only time during the day actually passes but I guess you get closer to the next malaria attack. However, there are certain situations that I would ONLY use buses to get around and if you do it during the night for example you get to your destination in the morning which definitely helps completing the mission where you can actually see what you're doing. Its also the safest way to travel by far, not having to deal with constant checkpoints and armed patrols and random things happening on the way. One more downside tho is that you miss potential places to find diamonds.
For me almost everything in this game made sense for the enviorment you were set at, and still holds to be my most favourite FC game to date.

What i like the most about it is immersion and free-roam action; both missing since 3. Now at least 5 has the free-roam mayhem back so even though you liberate outposts, the streets continue to be hostile. And let's not forget about the Arcade Mode... that might be an interesting feature.
Yeah you're right. Not that 3 or 4 were bad. But they just weren't on the same level of immersion that Far Cry 2 was. I think 5 looks interesting, not only for the points you just mentioned, but they're also bringing buddies back too. I'm not sure of the arcade mode though. I think my next video will be a on Far Cry 5 and the comparisons to the other titles, just before it releases

I agree it is a great game with gameplay elements that are often perceived as flaws. It does not have great voice acting, at least by the storyline characters; the enemies have great lines and their vocal patterns fit with the time and place of each battle.
Also, the hang glider is available in the first map. It is necessary to get to two diamonds (One just north of Pala, and one just north of Goka Falls.)

Just to add more detail; as a former 'bit player' for 40 years in the 'cold war', it is the utter realism that grips you. The characters are so typical, the civil war is what has happened right up to present times - & will continue no doubt. The characters are pretty realistic - I've met Vorhees types before! The landscape & fauna are excellent. The buildings/towns/details are perfect. The head up prompts are minimal. There is also so much to be discovered towards the edge of the mapped area. I actually feel I'm there. And finally, every time I replay it, things happen differently. A true classic.
When playing Far Cry 2 recently I felt sick playing it. Not sick in the sense of what was being seen, or done, but sick in the sense of unease. It wasn’t like the dopamine rush that occurred frequently while playing other shooters, it was just a slog. I felt tired. The drab colors and futility of the plot, conflict, etc. just killed me. Then it hit me. I’m not used to this type of game. As the merc isn’t used to the UAC. This game is alien to me. I’m not meant to play this. I’m an interloper here. This game is, from it’s very foundation, a metaphor. And the fact next to nobody ever looks into this game, or even plays it, is a travesty.

You do know that you can explore the whole map and get hidden diamonds and jackal tapes right? That kind of fills your exploring gripe. Did you not know that on the upper left corner of each map is the number of diamonds hidden in each section. The blinking green light on the gps means there is a diamond near by. Come on man.
Yes I am aware of that, that doesn't really constitute "exploring" in my book. It's very grindy and doesn't have much reward, no-one really went around looking for the diamonds unless they had to. It was more something done as you drove past locations and noticed the light blinking.
The 10th Floor how is having to actually look for diamonds a grind? One can easly beat the game without getting a single Dimond (minus the ones you get payed with) also exploring is part of the reward and how is more money for upgrades and new weapons not a reward, especially considering the harsh environment and limited savepoint gameplay (at least on console). Just because you can't be bothered to explore does mean it's not exploring. Tell me what exploration mecanic would you put in?
Anonymous the diamonds are limited? There are anywhere between 2 and 12 dimond cases in each of the 9 chunks of the map, in both regions, with multiple diamonds in each case. There is just enough diamonds in Farcry 2 to buy everything. So how are they limited?

Having loved games like MGSV, Red Dead 2, Witcher 3, TLOU2 etc etc, Far Cry 2 remains one of my all time favourites. They absolutely went in the wrong direction after it, trying to make it palatable to the mainstream.
Goddamn right man. As much as I enjoy FC3 and so on, they just don't have that edge that this game does. No matter how many crazy wildcard villains they have or cool takedowns and such (I like all of those though), FC2 really did nail an atmosphere that is pretty unique; especially so considering it's an FPS. Regarding TLOU2, my next video is going to be on that series. What did you think of it? (I fucking loved it)
The Tenth Floor loved TLOU2, but took me two playthroughs to get to that stage. The first run, I didn’t know what to feel. The second time all the little nuances were clearer and all the questions were answered.
And yeah dude! My problem with FC3 and beyond is that you feel like a superpowered hero very quickly. I loved FC2 because you start out getting your ass beat for hours, but you simply get better at surviving and fighting and setting ambushes to even the odds, all without needing “cool” perks and upgrades. It felt so real and if you dropped your guard that was it.
Another thing was the lack of checkpoints. Raised the blood pressure through the roof during encounters or else you would have to redo 30 mins of gameplay lol. So it led to insane tension. Honestly I feel like returning to it haha.

I enjoy this game immensely, and I get what the story was trying to say, I did really enjoy the ambition and amount of effort they put into making this game stand out, but the story and characters never really compelling to me and I honestly got bored of the repetitive missions and constant spawning turret cars, overall a decent game and it’s cheap so I do think it’s worth checking out, but it has mechanics that I personally wasn’t too fond of. Also stellar voice acting? They probably had some of the blandest voice acting I’ve ever heard, I get that was the point but intentional or not it’s still bland. I just found myself more engaged with the sequels, but hey that’s my opinion and you brought up great points in the video.

Another problem with FC2 is the game breaking glitches. I want to do an APR mission. But the game won't let me. I kill the guy at the door. Run from town. Come back to the same door. And then the game decides that I can do an APR mission. This ruins the realism.

Great analysis! I beat FarCry 2 on the PC, but it bugged out on me on the PS3, 3x! I figured if I was going to 100% the game, I was going to do it on console for the trophies. But each time I got a progression bug. This time: medicine quest 2 failed. After handing over the documents, the malaria gets me, I spawn at the church, and then I am given the same quest, which I can not complete! Same bug, different NPC/quest! If I get the jimmies to play this again I'll try the X360 first : /.

i loved this game, i grew up in africa and really enjoyed playing a game series i loved in a place i love.
It's s great game.
It feels even more like a brilliant progenitor, when you play Far Cry 1, 2 and 3 in a row, and see how much FC3 is the love child of almost every mechanic and aspect encountered in previous 2 games. Reused FC2 ammo pickup sounds in FC3 remind you of the roots. Vehicles, vast wilderness, explosions, blending into the nature to fight your enemies, outposts, wildlife, human conflicts, freedom of approach, lovely arsenals and interesting approach to health systems - all these and more feel like they naturally bloomed in FC3 because previous games made necessary steps.

If I could remake the game, I would flesh out the setting just a little bit more, in terms of the things living in it. Although the natural environment truly felt immersive (and I tell you that as a person who lived in Africa for years) but it was missing a few elements, firstly no civilians or villages. There is no warzone in the world where civilians are completely absent. Secondly, Pala doesn't feel like a town, let alone a city important enough to be the headquarters of the warring factions. It should've been expanded a little bit, I understand that would limit space in other parts of the game, but I don't think it would take too much out. Thirdly, the factions never fight one another out in the world. For a country in the middle of a civil war, there doesn't seem to be much warring. Sure you could argue there is a ceasefire in place, but where's the fun in that? Fourth, and last, a quite minor gripe that was addressed in the newer installments, the lack of wildlife. I mean, its Africa, a place thats known for its beautiful and varied wildlife, but again thats just a very minor gripe. The game was great, but those are just some elements I feel like its missing.

The game was unfinished. Story parts made no sense, a lack in depth was covered with far too many and fast respawning enemies.
It was one of the biggest disappointments at that time.
I played it the first two days and then I was sick of killing the same three dudes rushing in in a off-roader every 30 seconds.
Pretty bad game design and a shame for the beautiful engine.

I disagree, I think the voice acting fits perfectly with the story. The warlords aren't meant to be deep villains, they're just thugs that you work for. The way the jackal talks is completely different, as he's one of the major major plot devices. He feels like more of a "Character". All the other dialogue sounds authentic as well
I thought the Jackal's voice acting was too fast and it was like the voice actor was just reading the lines without pausing. The other voice acting was ok but I wouldn't say the voice acting as a whole was "stellar".

@@messer7450 it's easy you just need a software called cheat engine just download it
basiclly its a cheat program for any game but what iv'e found out about this it has a hidden control speed of the game aka (slow motion/bullet time)
ok now when you downloaded it just open the cheat engine then go to the upper settings
on the left side you should see HotKeys press it
now i know you have lots of hotkeys in there
but here are the 2 you need to use slow motion
Toggle The Speed Hack : press it and go right youll see a small type bar that says hotkey on top of it , PUT A KEY THAT YOU WISH TO MAKE YOU GAME AT NORMAL SPEED i use H
next
Speedhack speed 1 press it and youll see a nother type bar But under it has a speed selection
press the speed and type 0.30
and on the hotkey on top PRESS ANY KEY TO START THE SLOW MOTION
i use G i know its grenades so i replace the throw grenades option
and then you press OK at the bottom to save it
and there u go just 2 things at speedhack speed keys it actiavates the slow motion
and toggle the speed hack sets the game speed back to normal
so basicly i press G to activate and shoot and once im done shooting i just press H
also if your new to cheat engine to make sure the cheat engine works on any game
open the cheat engine
go top and left and youll see a small computer box glowing like rainbow press it and it will show you procces list
its easy from here just pick a GAME EXE
for example my far cry 2 is on i just minimize the game OR alt and Tab to hide it
and i press the computer box i see far cry exe press it
then go back to the game and press G/any hotkey you put, now wait a few seconds around 5 seconds it will start and you SHOULD HEAR A COMPUTER DING SOUND OR SOMETHING
that means it worked

any gamer friend who I've ever respected as both an individual and as a gamer and friend (list is fucking short my guys) have loved this game just as much as me. that's enough argument I think. anyone who actually loves games, and who has loved videogames before gaming became really mainstream, seems to like this game and, at best, seem to be divided on the following ones.
It is a great game, I think it really feels like a far cry, your character is so out of their depth, it's great

My favorite farcry game to date!! The only thing that really bothers me about this game, is the bolts and ejection ports on the guns... damn things are in the wrong side! I know its probably to show off the animations and stuff, but damnit it's annoying sometimes lol.
I'm love far cry 2 more than far cry 3thru 5 the story was awesome and challenging but everyone keeps forgetting what set far cry apart from say call of duty,battlefield or well almost any fps there was. The map editor. To this day with fc3 and fc4 and fc5 the map editor sorry to say none where as good as far cry 2s was. At one point across all systems PC,ps4,Xbox there where over 200,000 maps. Up until early 2018 great maps where still being made. The best part was total lobby control,the ability to have a playlist of maps from one to whatever team death,death match,capture the diamond and shit I forget the name of the other mode anyway you could have a list say 20 maps before each one started the host could do anything change weather on the map time of dsay level players start at win requirements how many people on a team what type of match between the four modes start when you wanted in game players could vote to skip vote to continue before time ran out you name it you could do it that's what started many many many different fan sites across all systems just about making and playing maps that are way more creative than anything Ubisoft ever came up with they really should remake far cry don't change it at all any of it just HD it and release it I bet it will be one of the best sellers of the year

The shooting and missions are fun. But all the driving is what turns me away. And there is no point doing a bonus objective for the mercenaries. They always need to be rescued at the end. I could understand if they needed rescuing occasionally, but every mission? These are some very incompetent mercs........
Driving could be better if there were some music. But having to deal with *one* random enemy driving in a car every 3-5 minutes is so annoying. It's not challenging either. Jyat stop your car. Shoot one or two guys. Get back in car. And repeat this until you reach your destination.
The game could have used other ways to be more alive and feel realistic.
In fact, realistically, it makes no sense how enemy marcs automatically know that I am not one of them. 👀
@@bigsmoke3617 I agree with both of your points here, and I think if it was made in 2019 it would not be very well received for that kind of thing. With the driving, I believe it can be given a bit of leniency, I mean the game is almost 11 years old, its not terrible driving experience, its just sub par by current standards. However, I think the merc missions as you stated were very flat and one dimensional, incompetent is a good description. Also, it would be cool to have at least a little bit of incognito when driving, good idea. But for 2008 and it still being relatively untouched ground for Ubisoft it was a solid attempt

I noticed that it is safer walking because you can hide in bushes and grasses. But it takes a million times longer to reach the destination.

It seemed to me that the whole buddy system is basically a diversion to trick you into doing worse shit for almost no gain and at a detriment to your time. Assassinate a prince for me, destroy medical supplies, kill the bounty hunters after me, etc. All you get is very, very slight upgrades to your safehouse. It's a total waste of time that only perpetuates the violence and suffering in the setting. I like it thematically, but a decade later, I just don't ever bother with the buddy missions.

I like far cry 2 but it had some REALLY bad issues. Like bad stealth, lack of fast travel points, pin point enemies on top 2 hardest difficulty, repetitive missions, no ability to bring your buddy
Normally I would argue that fast traveling is a game breaking core mechanic. Players should be rewarded for exploring the world and not relying on fast traveling between points. But in FC 2, one or two more fast travle points would be a nice addition. It got a little tedious spending so much time behind the wheel.
The stealth is as close to reality as you can get, and I personally love it.
Lack of fast travels is, as was said in the video, not really a bad thing, remember this is an FPS nor an RPG and the map is not THAT big really.
I don't know what you mean by pin point enemies on top 2 hardest difficulty so I'm just going to ignore that.
The missions are repetitive, that's true.
And, again, not an RPG, so no ability to bring your buddy with you. Also, why would you want that? The AI would definitely be terrible and it would only hinder you and your experience.
Though on that last point, I feel the game could be an AMAZING experience if you were able to bring your friends (like, actual real life people) into the game, hosting your game and have someone join you through LAN connetion or something.
@@ScurvyBoi Never really thought about the stealth in FC2 that way. Guess Ive just grown so used to the stealth mechanics being extremely unrealistic in most games.
@@markusnss Indeed, I grew up with those mechanics too and Far Cry 2 can be frustrating at times but it is realistic.
I think true stealth is shooting everyone from a long distance with a sniper, not infiltration.
IRL infiltration is bound to get you caught as soon as you complete the objective, and then it's just run for your life with the escape vehicle you planned to use.
@@ScurvyBoi Agreed! FarCry 2 is such a great game all in all, and it still holds up fucking great to this day. Actually annoying to see Ubisoft not looking back at their early work and implementing its features and details to the newer games in the franchise. To me FarCry 4 and especially 5 feels so distracted and distant from what FarCry was, and had to offer.
