The commencement speaker at my college graduation gave an address that has truly stayed with me these past 13 years. He shared his life story, about how he had all these big dreams and ambitions right out of school, but instead, every door was shut in his face. He got stuck for years working really crappy jobs for really low wages. In his early 30’s, he decided to shift his perspective and start looking at jobs as learning opportunities. Instead of being angry and depressed about his career, he’d ask himself what he could learn from that job. There is always something to learn, and when there is nothing left to learn, it’s time to move on. After a couple of years of that outlook and continuing to pursue his dreams, he was able to find his footing in his industry and had his big break and wrote the screenplay for Braveheart. For most people, success is long fought. Too many people expect maximum success with minimal sacrifice. Great message.
As someone who has been in school and for about a third of their life and was a late bloomer in many personal aspects, delayed gratification has been a big theme in my life, so I can definitely relate. Everything in due time.
