Ed Gavagan: A story about knots and surgeons
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 вер 2012
- One day, Ed Gavagan was sitting on the subway, watching two young med students practicing their knots. And a powerful memory washed over him -- of one shocking moment that changed his life forever. An unforgettable story of crime, skill and gratitude.

it makes me sad how little skill is required for destruction of a human life, and how much training and dedication is required for saving and restoring it.
Well said
such is the nature of our universe.
As a medical student, this means a great deal. There are definitely a lot of hard days and bad days and just like other fields with very little room for error, it demands a lot. Often, patients are transient and you lose sight of why you put in the hours and what you're sacrificing your time for. This is a beautiful reminder of why we all love this field and why we train so diligently. Thank you Ed.
I've seen 4 or 5 videos of him telling this story from different angles, and he gets emotional every single time. You can see how this still hurts him... I wanna thank you Ed for sharing this story even though it brings terrible memories. Thanks TED for promoting awesome people.
I just want to give the guy a hug.
Yea indeed! Amazing story!
My search for practicing laparoscopic knot tying lead me to this emotional story.
me too!!
Same
here's my laparoscopic suturing video ua-cam.com/video/R5rwEpZagPk/v-deo.html
I was searching the same thing! FLS sample
Very moving and gripping story. Makes me glad to be alive too!
It was also refreshing that he didn't do the too typical giving credit to a super being / miracle. He instead gave it to the surgeons and medical staff for saving his life. That's awesome.
Would love to know if they caught the perpetrators and if they were convicted. Love his thought of pushing back against the chaos. I hope that we all can do that just a little each day.
these kind of people give me strength in the hard times of my medical education. There appreciation of his work is the doctor's greatest joy.
Their.
Struggling to hold back the tears myself.
Such an amazing guy,
and the surgeon who performed his operation.
Just... wow.
Searched video to tie a one handed knot for my surgery rotation
Clicked on this suggested video
...motivation restored, back to practicing my knots
Thanks UA-cam algorithm
Im a med student and this is so inspiring. Thanks Ed Gavagan.
same. i bet you're a doctor somewhere now.
i watch this video allot.. the path to becoming a surgeon is brutal and patients like this keep me inspired
a lot
It’s cases like him that are thankful for how brutal it is for you. Please be as good as you can be.
This is what loving life looks like.
Glad u survived and are here to share your life experience. Keep moving forward each day!
That was a good choice, sharing that experiencie as you did. Thank you.
has been and still is one of my fav ted talks ever
I came to learn about knots but left with feels. This man needs a hug
A profoundly moving and fascinating story. Thank you so much for sharing that experience.
This is why i want to be a surgeon
Eh, for the most part we don't get to see cool cases like this (neurosurgical resident here), however if you like dealing with something new and unpredictable everyday (which seems to be the case for the lecturer) then I feel like emergency medicine would be a lot more enjoyable for you.
Thing is, most of us surgeons even in top tier hospitals usually have the same cases being presented to us, just in different people.
I wanna be a neurosurgeon but I dont think I can rlly do it cuz Im scared... I cant think I can do an operation because I have the feeling I cant do it or I dont know what to do, any advice?
you have to first decide if you want to be a doctor, after 1st year anatomy you will be very comfortable with seeing the inside of the body.

Every day ... 2 words, doctor.
@@llawliet2310 Every Day...2 words, DOCTOR.
A profoundly moving and fascinating story. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
What a brave man to tell that story.
wow, just wow.. such a grateful person who can see their hardwork and skill.
i cried a little
Just listening to that story resurrects the reason I do what I do. I have been an OR nursing for over 25 years and still love to go to work. What this story reminds me is that although my job can be thankless, because my patients are asleep and don't remember me, I know that deep in heart and professional knowledge, I am helping someone to continue to live their life and am their advocate or voice for just a short period of time. And that period of time is priceless to me....
Perhaps you aren't told often enough that those of us who are performing operations are very much aware of what you are doing and why you (and all of us) are doing it. Patients are rarely aware that OR nursing, anesthesia, perfusion and other technical teams even exist, but that's OK. We know why we are doing it.
So, touching. Thank you for sharing your story!
Its an affirmation to people in the medical field, that our countless hours studying, our worries about getting every procedure just right, trying our best to remember so much information we'd need three lifetimes to truly grasp it all is worth it. So often we do not see the long term results of our work, and when we see and hear examples like this it is like a beacon guiding us to continue what we do because we know it will always be worth it.
Absolutely inspiring story.
A very touching talk ,takes you down the horrific memories and emerges with all the gratitude which helps breathe life and the wonders of the human existence.Yeah, its quite natural to get emotional...
Hehe, I was searching how to tie one-handed knots :)
What a remarkable human… God bless you, Ed. 💗
phenomenal story -- it brought me to tears
Man what a story, made me tear up.
Very inspiring speech. Thank you!
Beautiful.... Just Beautiful..
That was beautiful.
Thank you Dr.
Your video is really helpful
This was a deeply moving personal tale of how modern medical science saves lives, and makes a difference. And it also goes to show how you should thank the hard working scientists, doctors, nurses, and emergency personel when you get out of a bad situation with your life (and hopefully most of your health).
Usually i don't like personal tales of tragedy, especially when they are overcome by people who credit superstitious beliefs, but is not one of those and this gathers a like from me.
I think he just shared his experiance to raise awareness and gratitude of the incredible job that surgeons do.
I'm glad you are better and hope you remain well.
Incredible and sublime. Just incredible.
Amazing story
practicing my knots as this came up. no joke
same
Great speech.
I get the feeling that he's physiologically/psychologically reliving this story as he tells it.Brave guy because I think most of us would be wanting to forget it.
What an intense and powerful speech. And what impressive courage. God Bless him.
How the hell can 4 people dislike this man's story.Shame on hem.
Great point.
I really love men who show emotions.
very lucky to be here.. literally..
*Hervorragend. Drehbuch und presentation. Danke. Bangkok-Johnnie CarSanook Media Thailand*
Hell yeah! Hope is important, but action is a thousand times better.
thx!
Great speech has the power to transcend lives and affect all who listen. The definition of Post traumatic growth .
Woah dude..
Just.. just.. Wow..
amazing
What a nice city!
The Moth and TED?! This guy is so awesome :D
thanks for your concern .... have a great day
A hard but good human-interest story.
No, it's much more profound. The message is, that It is worth it, to push back against chaos.
Omg ... u must have done alot of good in your life to survive such a horrific accident.
Wow...
That's what it's all about. Yes, we have all this technology and all this knowledge, but it's how it touches the lives of ordinary people that makes it worth having. Bravo for not thanking Zeus for him pulling through, or whoever the kids are worshiping these days.
Hardcore.
He was saved by his own intent. Nothing in this world is of chance.
Interesting. I think their was a book on amazon called "Chaos theory"...I'll check it out when I get a chance.
hahaha off course. i just wanted to point out how unfortunate it is that destroying takes so little effort. im not saying we as humans shouldn't do anything to create more and destroy less, and its kind of inmoral to not do so since we have the ability to. i agree with you 100%
Wow. I was alone at HOME and I clapped.
brave
I'm here because my leg has a bunch of stitches and I can't figure out how the surgeon did it. dude must have 5 hands...or a couple of residents helping him out. clever bunch of people.
makes sense though doesnt it
and biggest in my opinion
Was half expecting Phoebe to punch him in the stomach.
Well that's as good as any 'wild guess'. XD
We meet again...
destruction is always gonna be more simple than creation, thats sort of the way the universe works
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
How so?
Science and Prayer really does have to be an either/or choice.
Jimmy Oliver No
No, chaos is, literally, the most stable state of nature. To build or even preserve any kind of order, you need to introduce energy to the system. That's the law of entropy. And that's the law which governs our lives if we don't "push back."
...Those thugs stole the spotlight.
But indeed, the surgeons were hero's.
your basiclly right of course. but we can do better as humans to create more, and destroy less. we shouldn't say :"hey let's just flow with the way the universe goes and help the entropy and chaos grow!"
I don't know it was some really tough times with Chemotherapy and stuff i managed thanks to god again BTW :))
0:15
amen ;)
Cool story bro
learn some boxing (when you can't own weapons - he is from New York city...)
''they tell me that 97% of my blood is Cancer cells'' That's a lot of cancer how did your heart work?
*sea
how did he speak if he was intubated at site? or did he just imagine that
You can still speak.even if you have the mask that let the anesthesia flow but you sound more like batman you know
That's why there's so much evil in the world. It's easy to do bad and difficult to do good.
"Within each one of us there's a coward and a king. Practice what you preach to become what you believe." "The easy way out or the road less traveled? The solution can be found within you." -ABRB lyrics
You didn't get it. The young surgeons were the stars of the story, not the thugs.
TED plz remove 0:15 of your video -.- plzzz
Should you relapse, don't go to a hospital, just pray. I'm sure it will work out just fine for you.
A really deep and interesting story IMO..
What kinds of skills are we teaching our young people..
ad Psychopath selfish greed-cults for worst morons.. or useful components of civilization.
30 years of Thatcher & Reagan's "low wage sump" has not improved industry or manufacturing, but trashed our societies with low skill, brutality & crime.

(Ted talk: Richard Wilkinson: How economic inequality harms societies)
Ignorance, belief, greed and egocentrism is detrimental for society.
They didn't for me. Chaos is eternal and uninteresting, it's our efforts to fight against it, that are worth paying attention to.
1st to comment after watching.
ok so it was dramatic.. but I don't get the point.. that developing skills saves lives?
stray bullet wouldn't be a problem if you are properly trained.. which I am.
and considering I have a friend who was recently killed by a stray bullet in downtown san jose, I know the importance of gun control at the same understand the need to protect one self.
1st to reply to a comment of the 1st that watched.
...Struggle might be eternal. The struggle for something better. The struggle against nature.. But chaos.. meh, a lot of that is just called from government/human stupidity, trying to manipulate things for the better, from the economy to peoples education, I do not mean this in a conspiratorial manner, I mean quite literally.
This vid.. Its why I hate humans sometimes.. Your an individual, trying to make your way in the world, do an honest living.. and you get attacked randomly by some thugs on the street. What a load of garbage. This vids a good wake up call to be careful and alert when your out in about.
And why it got two dislikes.. You gotta be kiddin me. What's not to like? The truth?
