Awesome. Just today I was talking to my father about the home I am remodeling. All the crawl space insulation was removed to gain access to the joist to fix the sagging. I said why put it back when it is trapping moisture, and it's cool in there in the summer and heat rises in the winter. It's like having a clean cut older version of myself says "You're right". Thank Mr. Dutton!!
That is my question too. It's falling down from age so why replace it at all? My only concern is will the next home owner object when I sell the house or is it common to just have no insulation
It though about running foam boards across the floor joists on the bottom. Trapped air between the joists and keep the moisture off. Idk if that’s right but that’s what the plan is 🤷♂️
Oof. Glad I watched this. I have a similar home with a drum studio. Almost went out to buy a bunch of rock wool insulation to go under and between the studs.
Note: I also have lattice around the crawl space as shown in the video, could that be a key of the increased amount of moisture buildup? Fiberglass insulation is starting to fall.
I have lattice work as well and my house is 7 feet off the ground. My problem was that rats were getting up in the insulation. Urine and rat feces. I am taking it all out right now. Not sure what I am going to do but at least I can monitor the space now
What about just not insulating at all? We have great airflow open on 3 sides. But old Batts covered by 4x8 foam board is falling down. Can I just remove what's fallen and let the air just flow to keep the Joists and subfloor dry?
I have house outside Houston Tx floor kinda get cold still can I put a skirting around the house to help it from getting cold or is that a waste of money
Hey fella you might know . I have a barn pitched home needing to spray foam.. the very top pitch... Tip top of the house.. has a screen mesh I assume is for ventilation.. do I spray foam that and seal up.??? Seems air flowing through it would create condensation???
Been in the business for 30 years. Everything the man says is correct. Why insulate a crawlspace that stays 60 degrees. We WILL NOT Install fiberglass batted between the floors. I'm amazed that the two largest pest control companies do that, but at $3.50 per square foot, I guess they'd do anything. We REMOVE insulation, not add it. It's a sponge holding rates, mice, snakes moisture and in some movies, even dead bodies. If the walls of a crawlspace are above ground, we might propose 1-1/2" Owens-Corning foam board with on only the walls above ground. Don't that 1000 times. One of our trade secrets is how we take the 7.5R value foam board and raise the R-value by 5 . If we insulate anything regarding the floor, it's the band Joists and like the man said, We used closed cell foam only. In most cases, we go in and rip out the nasty, rat infested, wet nasty fiberglass material, blow out the band Joists with a 160 MPH hand blower, fog the crawlspace of the mold is light, and then spray foam the band Joists. That's where 20% of all heat loss occurs. No more cold floors. No more heat loss. No more stinky crawlspace. It becomes the cleanest room in the house. We fix it so that when the Dehumidifier comes on? There is like a whirlwind underneath. Your hair will blow back. Haha. Congratulations on signing Tyron Taylor to the Houston Texans, the most underrated player in football history.
Thanks for sharing. This helps me a lot to know what NOT to do. What do you suggest for trying to soundproof, or sound "reduce" a similar home with a music studio? The studio room is surrounded by other rooms on all sides, so I'm not worrid about the walls. Under the house is the main problem. I know about floating floors but I just can't cover up my hardwoods. I want to attack from underneith.
Like others here in this post have commented, I too had the batted insulation applied to my subfloor in the crawl space. ~ After a rainy season 2 years ago, I discovered soft spots in my interior flooring. ~ Within a couple of months those soft spots were quickly turning in to holes in my interior flooring.~ Turned out, my insulation was holding moisture up against my subfloor & a fungus had formed. ~ All the insulation had to come out & the entire subfloor in 2 rooms. ~ I didn’t put any insulation back & with winter coming I’ve been questioning that decision… You’ve confirmed I’m on the right track… But hearing you say about how snakes get up in the insulation.. Gulp.. Aren’t they now going to have an easier time finding their way into the house? 🐍🤦♀️ Gads
Don’t do it, I did it and my biggest regret, found out I am highly allergic to shredded glass caked in formaldehyde and now my life has really been wrecked
I just came across your channel and I have a question. I live in FL in a double wide mobile home. I just ripped out the underbelly and then the insulation. They were both in horrible condition. The floors joist are 2x6 and the subfloor is plywood. That is in pretty good condition. I have been thinking about leaving it off. Can I leave it off with it being a mobile home? +
Attic is always the warmest and crawlspace is always the coolest. Mixing the two is a recipe for mold. Let each maintain it's own separate temperature while having adequate air flow.
You seemed be talking about nice and cool and heat rising etc...is your advice based on your location? Cuz....AC? Not where I live. Its currently 5 deg F and even walking around in socks my feet get so cold they hurt. You basically advising that I don't insulate my crawl space unless I insist amd of I do I have to basically pay through the nose to get foam specialists out here in the middle of nowhere? Sort of defies logic and the way other houses around me were built. Also, why is litterally the next video about insulating my crawl space. I'm confused.
This video is sponsored by foam insulation. As an hvac tech and master plumber, I lowered my electrical bill by 50 percent and I did not have any burst pipes. Think of your home as a burrito, you are going to want to wrap it. Keep the outside air outside so your hvac system can control your indoor climate. I live in Texas and we have been hitting unusually low freezing temps. Everybody pipes are bursting and their heat bills are around 300 with solar panels! Use common sense when it comes to your house. My house is warm and I have low energy bills or you can choose on a B pole frame house to have 2 inches of wood between you and the outside weather. Insulate!!!!! Key ingredient to climate control in your home.

Glad someone said it
Thanks for uploading this video. My sister is remodeling an older farm house and we just discussed this very subject today.
Glad we could help!
I live in Michigan and my pipes are frozen due to the attic freeze. I plan on putting the spray foam in my crawl space for insulation.
Closed cell foam is a cellulose material and will attract termites. Have a thorough termite treatment done with Termidor @ .125 mix rate
I appreciate this video, especially since it seems honest. Most videos on the subject are trying to sell me something.
I believe you just saved me a lot of money. Thanks

How did that work out ? Thanks
The best advice on crawlspace insulation hands-down!

Thanks, I was going to buy insulation this week to add to my crawl space. Not doing it anymore. How about adding foam sheets. Will that work

Like he said have it foamed in with closed cell foam.
Thanks
Are pipes prone to freezing if the walls are not insulated? I live in Iowa where cold weather causes issues.
In texas that is usually not a problem, especially if you use pex.
help please my wood floor started to pop or cuppling wat should i do
Don’t do it, I did it and my biggest regret, found out I am highly allergic to shredded glass caked in formaldehyde and now my life has really been wrecked
Next video tell them to get a preventive termite treatment before they spray foam
My insulation under my house is falling like the house that you were under during this video should I go ahead and pull it down and just not insulate?
What did you do? Half of my single wide trailer insulation is fallen down. How much was your light bill with Central Heat and air with bad insulation?
@@mikebellamy9371 nothing, he never answered
My house floors are freezing because I don’t have wind blockage. You think blocking the wind is good enough or do I insulate?
What was your light bill with central heat and air

yes leave it off
@@reginaldwhite7944 I did and it is great thanks
@@barbershop7277 still working for you with no insulation?
why not pull air out of the attic and blow it down into the crawl space all year around

Nothing better than walking on a cold floor in winter
