  • World number one Roger Federer overcame a fine display from Andy Roddick to win his third straight US Open title in 2006. The Swiss won, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, to become the first man in the Open era to win three straight Wimbledon and US Open titles in the same years. After the first two sets were split, both players had their chances with break points in a pulsating third. But Federer broke in the 12th game to win it and race to a ninth Grand Slam title.

      Nadal actually "pushed him" in the Wimbledon final 2007.
      In fact Nadal should've won it.
      In the 3 Wimbledon finals from 2007 to 2009 there were 15 sets and Federer only won 2 of those 15 sets NOT on tie-break, but still managed to win 2 out of 3 of those Wimbledon titles. Lost no set on tie-breaks but won 6 tie-breaks.

    Its hilarious how utterly unfazed Fed is by anything Roddick does. No matter how great of a serve, winner, or volley Andy hits, Fed's facial expression never changes, and he just confidently swags back to the baseline for the next point while Andy throws a party. Amazing how much the dynamics of the rivalry had changed from 2003/4

    Federer better than perhaps anyone else in exposing the technical flaws and limitations in Roddick's game. Federer looking completely at ease throughout most of this match, teasing roddick with short slices to his backhand which he just didn't seem to have any real answer to. Federer using all of Roddick's pace against him - making Roddick look like he was on the back foot all the time pushing roddick about and exposing Roddick's very heavy footed movement.

    This match shows how much the game has evolved since then. Yes, we know the courts were faster but even so, today's game has longer rallies, less errors, more precision on both groundstrokes from many of the top players.
    I think the reason why today's game has lesser errors and more precision is because that was what was required to beat Roger. Around this time I can't recall that many players who were able to just pounce on Roger's game and win.(Aside from in form Nalbandian and in form Safin) The best strategy against Roger was to grind him down long and good enough so he starts committing errors, which Rafa did very successfully.
    So in a way, "How to stop Roger Federer" is the foundation of today's game, which for me speaks volumes among Roger's success.

    • @CK-iv1lq
      @CK-iv1lq 3 роки тому +9

      Hard disagree here. The courts being faster is what yielded more errors. More errors are going to come with an attacking game. And I wouldn't say longer rallies is a good thing...

    • @Mzee1084
      @Mzee1084 3 роки тому +4

      The precision and less errors I believe is mostly just due to the slowing of surfaces. Clay for example has always been about long-hard fought rallies, and now since all the other surfaces have slowed down they are getting the same treatment. Federer has had a lot of impact on the game, but I don't find this to be one of them.

Many people believe his peak was in 2006, although it doesnt make much sense from a sporting perspective. The ones who make you stronger and push you to the limits are your main rivals. Nadal and djokovic emerged in 08, but especially in the early 10's. They brought some serious competition for federer and he had to improve himself. Each one of the 3 got pushed to his limits by the other 2 and got better and better, its just logical. His absolute peak he achieved in 2017/18, where he completely dominated nadal, which he had never done before. Fed himself said that in 2015 he played better tennis than in 2005. Many say that fed got old and cant play his best tennis anymore, which isnt true. Last years Wimbledon he made one of his best gras performances ever, in 2017 he played brilliant too. I watched this us open final and can clearly say that fed from two years ago would beat this fed from 06. He has more weapons. He hasnt quite the movement and maybe fh anymore, but compensates it with his unreadable serve, improved bh, volley and tennis iq

That Nadal could compete with Federer so well on grass was a clear indicator that a fast hard court would not give Federer much of an advantage. And this ignores the adjustments that Nadal and Djokovic would have made if the surfaces were all faster. But one ought to recognise that there are multiple facets to a game and it is possible for some facets to have peaked here (e.g. speed, forehand, serve), and for other facets which would become more vital in helping defeat big 3 rivals to have improved in subsequent years (e.g. backhand, defence, shot selection). Hence, there may not be one definitive answer to which Federer is peak, because the question is obviously too broad.

I believe, if Roger Rafa n Novak debuted at the same time and were of the same age, Roger would've gotten the upper hand, but at slight margin. I don't know about this, and I'm not sure how useful it is as speculation, to be honest (not trying to spoil your fun). I mean, are they the same age in 2003, or 2011? That's going to be a factor, isn't it? Also, I would imagine that the three of them all playing at the same age (or maximum 1 year difference) means they emerge as somewhat different players than what they are now, maybe. What do you think? Would Fed be a baseline grinder if he was Novak's age in 2011? Because he would be turning pro at a time different amongst a different set of guys. This is why the fantasy world of fans of the other two of the Big 3 where Fed wins a maximum four slams across his career or whatever, is really amusing to me. All of their fantasies are scenarios where everything stays the same no matter the year/era, no matter the surface -- no-one is negatively affected except for Fed, who wins next to nothing. The "weak era" theory makes him INHERENTLY inferior to the other two, so taking him out of that period and putting him anywhere else means he can only lessen his achievements. That's how I'm understanding their arguments.

And his contemporaries like Roddick,hewitt and Safin hardly got a win against him. That's why these considered along with Federer as the big 4. You are just personal Fed fan. Reached the semis of RG, Wimbledon and then reached the finals of the US Open. Oh and neither were teenagers in the matches you mentioned. Roddick again World no.1, US open champion and has winning h2h against Novak. Safin, world no.1, 2 grand slams, 2000 Us Open where he beat a 29 year old Sampras who had just won Wimbledon. 2008 Murray had just won a title in Cincinnati, where he defeated Djokovic who had defeated Nadal. There's literally no harm in accepting that Federer had dominated the sport like no ever before, and only Novak has come close to such levels of domination. Safin more or less didn't care by that time and lacked dedication but on his day could beat anyone, see his win against Djokovic at Wimbledon 2008. Roddick adopted a more net-oriented game with less power, certainly not peak Roddick, although he did have some big wins like beating Murray in Wimbledon 2009 SF and beating Rafa in 2010 Miami. All of these players you mention were near the peak between 2002 and 2005, not by 2007/08.

      @@travisbickle5279 All eras have big competition, it's just who is in their prime and plays well at the time. If no one player is able to dominate, it makes a particular era look more competitive than another. The late 1980s, late 1990s were very strong eras. The current era is very weak. Roger and Rafa are both past their prime, Murray is nowhere. Players like Tsonga, Berdych, Del Potro, Gasquet are either retired or nowhere.

      @@travisbickle5279 I agree about the bonus part, but there were far more dangerous players in Federer's era, "floaters" in the draw. A lot of these players were also present after 2008 and in the 2011-2016 era so your argument doesn't really hold. All the players you mentioned before were quite capable of beating Nadal, Murray and Djokovic and often did. You only have to see that tennis has turned into a retrieving game instead of a hitting game to see how it has gotten worse. Turning the court surfaces slow has made the modern game a joke.

      Novak in 2015 faced worst Nadal ever and out of prime Federer (compared to 2004-early 2010 peak Federer or 2008-2013 peak Nadal). Murray was consistent but in big matches in slam finals was a punching bag against the big 3 especially against Djokovic. Wawrinka played match of his life against Djokovic in RG 2015 which Djokovic should have never lost yet he did.
