    The outer loop is very close to the edge. Maybe put up some barriers of a sort to prevent trains falling off due to derailments?

    For a material to build up the tunnel try using Styrofoam Insulation, I used it for a Canadian Pacific layout about 5 years ago and it worked very well

    Lots of progress, it's looking really good and a step closer to a canal 😊

    Really great progress Dan....Got to say your patience at constructing those metcalf buildings far outweighs mine.I have a OO Gauge Triang layout which has recently been dismantled,awaiting a re build in a shed.Triang was the toy train company in the 1950`s/60`s,up until 1972,when the company became Hornby....as we know of today.You can see a couple of short triang train vids on my channel...Its more of a vintage train set,than a scenic model railway.Looking forward to more updates on your progress....This truly is a great hobby !!

      Yes, I am looking forward to getting to the canal, I am particularly enjoying the idea of creating the water top scene of working boats and maybe a few rowing boats too... of course along with a tiny Tilly!

    As you go along, the demands of the layout grow. Eventually, you will probably learn several skills such as soldering, wiring, track maintenance and scenery-making. YT can help and, of course, you will get lots of free advice (guilty) directly on your posts. I draw inspiration from others' layouts that I see on YT.
    Like you, I'm progressing slowly on my layout. When I add something, I must live with it a while to adjust my plans to the new physical reality on the layout. Also, since I'm in the US, I often have to wait for overseas shipments of my British railway models and accessories.
    One thing I'm trying to do is make my layout a nighttime layout. So street lights, building lights and coach interior lights all have to be installed. I won't have a canal, tho, so I am looking forward to seeing yours. Also, I like your Metcalfe models. I haven't tried any of those yet, but I'm looking at them. Cheers!

      A night time layout sounds fantastic! I will definitely leave the lighting to you for the time being though!
      It is now 3 months and 1 day since I first opened up my original Hornby starter set, so I am happy with my progress but I keep thinking of even more things to add in! I definitely need to focus on getting each area "completed" in some kind of order!

    • @SBCBears
      @SBCBears 6 років тому

      Oh! You want an orderly approach? I don't think that is possible with us first-timers. When I begin to fret about the lack of an orderly process, it helps me to redefine my process as "organic". "It's not haphazard, it's organic." See, doesn't that sound better? =)

    Nice Video! Well done so far on your layout. As you said in your video you like to create a hillside. One of the best ways to create a hillside (from experience and my opinion) is to use PVA glue (school glue) and newspaper/magazines. You should allow to dry at least 24-48 hours however once dry it will go rock hard. When I was done my hillside I let the glue dry then I painted the hill a dark green (to cover any words from the newspaper). Then I used a PECO static grass applicator with NOCH grass (I think the grass was Spring Medow) and it came out very well. I hope this helps you.

    • @SortOfInterestingTrains
      @SortOfInterestingTrains  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Yes I will probably do something like that for my hillside too! It will be my first static grass application too so will be a new skill to learn! I am think of having a bit of a woodland scene on it with the possibility of maybe some kind of farming scene, maybe a broken fence and a farmer trying to usher his cows back into a field out of the woods!!

    • @jakegooding4711
      @jakegooding4711 6 років тому

      Fantastic Idea! I currently have cows on my hillside but lacking a farmer. I need to buy one.

    At the spot where your trucks derailed, you could have an issue with a larger more expensive locomotive. It is really dangerous to have such a spot. If you want to have rails on the very edge, get some plexiglass. Don't risk your future expensive locos...

    • @SortOfInterestingTrains
      @SortOfInterestingTrains  6 років тому

      Yes, I think I will add some kind of rustic fencing type effect to the edge just to stop anything falling off as you say!

    Looks superb. Why did you not get a couple of half curves instead of all this cutting? Very well done.

    • @SortOfInterestingTrains
      @SortOfInterestingTrains  6 років тому

      Basically I wanted to have as much of a straight in the middle for the wharf and loading area, so I went for the tightest corners I could!

    • @PhilPage227
      @PhilPage227 6 років тому

      i understand, your wharf sounds like it will be amazing. How about the canal going under the railway.

    • @PhilPage227
      @PhilPage227 6 років тому

      Or a terminal line at canal wharf where the engine can run round the train for the return trip.

    Hi - quick question re this layout. I've noticed you've adapted your train layout from the original Hornby layout, i.e. your inner track is more of a smaller circle. Did you do a video of this change, or was it difficult ? I've tried to adapt my layout to the same as your's but I can't get the rails to link up. Also, did you do a video on your clay inclines ? I like what you've done there. Sorry, I'm copying you a little, layout wise, but I like what you have done, Thanks for any help, Neil :-)

  • @a.r.productions
    @a.r.productions 6 років тому +2

    make sure the curves aren't too sharp that limits the range of loco's you can run on that section like big express engines and long fright engines

    Dan how will you deal with the level crossing covering two tracks but the new track doesn't have one? The road will have to curve with e bridge or something!

    • @SortOfInterestingTrains
      @SortOfInterestingTrains  6 років тому +1

      This is something that I have been contemplating! I am thinking that there will be a direct road to the wharf and loading area and then a operate road from the wharf off to one of the sides!
