Here is the thing. The A6700 is a great hybrid budget APC camera, for cinematic videos and photos. But filming at 4k 120fps all the time is too heavy for overheating its logic. I understand the expectation of filming for sports events is a great disappointment. For that, I recommend the FX30 and FF FX3 over the A6700 for sports events as some in the comments say. Because it has a fan and two Card slots that gives more benefit than the a6700. I will buy the A6700 for other purposes and it will be my first camera with changeable lenses. Really nice that you make more content about sports videography camera reviews keep doing that.
at 4k60 i’ve recorded an entire college basketball game. i record in clips as well and also i used the Ulanzi fan (not continuously). this is my first Sony camera but there is a lot of heat management involved for high quality video
I bought my sony a6700 and SIGMA 24-70 together last year, and I mainly use it for sports videography. I put a cage and handle for a better grip and monitor handle, and I use a Ulanzi cooling fan to keep temperatures down. The fan is certainly a game changer with this camera. I think this does everything the sony FX30 does and more (better for photography) but the only downside being the overheating. Adding the fan, and keeping it at the highest setting brings down the temperatures a lot, and it's as easy as leaving it plugged in to an external battery for unlimited fan usage. This is the "do it all" camera and you can keep it small and light, or rig it up to have it preform like an fx30. Great camera I would honestly prefer to have the sony FX3 over the a6700 or FX3, but with the price its non negotiable for casual to semi-professional use. I'd even argue with proper rigging, this can be used for professional use cases, like I will be doing in the near future.
Isnt't the 24-70 a bit too tight on the wider end when you use it with a crop body like the a6700? I have been using the fx30 for some time now and feel the tamron 17-70 2.8 is a much better option, one more thing to add on is the shutter angle which I think is totally a game changer and time saver for me as I switch a lot between frame rates in run and gun situations and dont have to change the shutter angle once I set it to 180°
I'd been contemplating buying a A6700 for a while, but the overheating issues concerned me. Your view is spot on, where many just say it's not really an issue, or just buy a Ulanzi fan. I felt putting a fan on the plastic back would only help slightly, as you are not actually cooling the working parts. I ended up forking over the extra $400 for the FX30 with a built in fan, and I'm glad I did. Thanks for the honest review!
I’m using the a6700 professionally but I’m an extreme run and gun weirdo. I mainly shoot mountain bike events where I’m often riding a bike with my camera in a bag then whipping it out to get my shots. Dummy battery and v-mount definitely helps take out a lot of heat from the camera. Overheating is still possible - but not nearly as quick to compared to native battery.

The a6700 is a tiny camera and needs all the help it can get with overheating. These Ulanzi fans, that everyone seems to be reviewing and recommending are just that - fans, blowing against the back of the camera. There's a much more robust solution, that not many people talk about - the Tilta a6700 Lightweight Kit: cage + handle + cooling. The fan in that kit is also a heatsink and it mounts securely to the cage (it can only mount to that specific cage - it's not universal). It actually presses against the back of the camera with a thermal pad. The cage itself also helps with heat dissipation. Yes, it's a more expensive solution, but it actually works properly.

Unfortunately I don't have the camera anymore. But hopefully this firmware update does the trick. Although overheating is more of a hardware issue than firmware.
A6700 would be an ideal camera for other scenarios but something as fast-paced as sports and also an area where shooting a high frame rate is ideal will not be a good choice. Looking at the FX30 as my upgrade from my A7III.

Great video! I’ve used the a6700 for the past 4 months when I travel and it’s been amazing 😁 When you film in 60fps and 120fps do you use a 30p or 24p timeline when editing?
Gotcha! Of course 60fps makes good slow motion but if you want to keep part of a 60fps clip in full speed on a 24p timeline, does it cause any choppy/jittery moments in the clip? I assume that 60fps full speed will look smooth on a 30p timeline since 30 is a factor of 60?
@@CPerryTravels Technically yes, 60fps footage will be slightly jittery because some frames are being skipped. But it is incredibly hard to notice even if you try. 4K 24p is ok with open screen, though the fan is no that expensive and adds calm to the shooting. Definitely. It is not that slim as it seems. 😅 every generation of Sony gets thicker.
Thanks for your review! The most annoying issue for me when filming action/sports with 4k120p and the A6700 is stabilization. Actvie stabilization is not available and even no gyro data is recorded 😞 How did you stabilize your footage at 4k120p in the video? Thanks for you videos. I really appreciate that you share your knowledge about this niche.
I never use active stabilization, even when it's available, because I feel it's a bit hit and miss sometimes. I usually stick with standard stabilization and use the filming technique I explained in this video ua-cam.com/video/Ge0MM6gBEHU/v-deo.html
So can you confirm if there is no overheating if shooting 10bit 4k for about 5 minutes max and then stopping let's say for 10-15mins and shoot again? because mainly I will use it for commercials and music videos where footage never exceeds 5mins. I would go for the FX30 but due to the shutter I prefer the 6700.
@@SamiIssa Bad is a very strong way to put it. The way I see it, just because there's a better option available doesn't mean that this one is bad. It just means it's slightly less good.
Also, the a6700 doesn’t have quite as good 4K 120p as the FX30. The FX30 has a better compression format for 4K 120p due to being able to utilize the faster Cfexpress cards. Other than that video quality is the same.
In the context of sports videography, it doesn't make much of a difference. There's always a bunch of people in your shot simultaneously and any camera will struggle in that situation because it's impossible for a camera to know which subject you want to focus on.
@@BeyondTheGame_E hey thanks for the reply =) Yeah that makes sense. have you tried using it on mundane day to day? i know the fx30 AF was already good.

But considering that I'm sitting on a chair the whole time while my camera is on a tripod, any camera with eye tracking would do a great job. To be honest, I have no idea if you can take photos and film at the same time. There's probably a way but I've never done it. I also don't think your photos would look very good because you need a much higher shutter speed for sports photography. You're probably better off using screen shots from your video after the fact.
Dummy battery, external source and a fan constantly on, got me over an hour of non stop shooting in 100/120fps. at a room temperature. 20mins without anything, 40mins with a fan only, and 60mins with all together. I've not had a warning coming on since using this combo, shooting the whole hockey and basketball pre game/game. Great vid🤝🏽 exactly what I was looking for, would you say it’s fast enough for professional or intermediate sports photography as well ?
Im not a photographer myself but I’m pretty sure it’s good enough.
this was a great video. What shutter speed did you use for the 60fps footage. its hard to get 60fps footage to look that cinematic .
Thanks! But I’m not sure about the shutter speed. It was probably 1/200 or 1/250. Something like that.
SONY just released a firmware update for the a6700 that seems to have fixed the overheating issues. You should take another look!
Unfortunately I don't have the camera anymore. But hopefully this firmware update does the trick. Although overheating is more of a hardware issue than firmware.
thank you for this review 😉
You’re welcome!
A6700 would be an ideal camera for other scenarios but something as fast-paced as sports and also an area where shooting a high frame rate is ideal will not be a good choice. Looking at the FX30 as my upgrade from my A7III.
Thank you for your videos and your channel the content is fantastic.
I have completely solved the overheating issue on this camera using an item that costs £8.99 from Amazon.
sourcing map Electronic Radiators Heatsink for MOS GPU IC Chip Black 50 x 25 x 10 mm 5pcs
I connect 3 of these together using electrical tape and they fit snug in the back of the camera and draw out all the heat. No more overheating, No more heat around the body by the battery and no more needing to switch the camera off during pauses in the game. I film football(soccer) matches which are over 45 minutes a half and do not worry at all about overheating with the camera.
Finally Thank you for all the recommendations the tamron lenses and feelworld monitor and all the other bits you've recommended have really helped start my journey.
That's interesting. I've seen those things inside computers and servers but never on cameras. Also thank you for your kind words.
Exactly the same concept as with a computer It's takes the heat away from the processor, in this case the camera processor.
Is it inside the camera or the back of the screen? Just wondering how you've mounted these
Great video! I’ve used the a6700 for the past 4 months when I travel and it’s been amazing 😁 When you film in 60fps and 120fps do you use a 30p or 24p timeline when editing?
Thank you! And yes I typically edit in a 24p timeline.
The only time you could maybe see it would be during steady camera movements like pans and tilts. here's a video I made about this topic ua-cam.com/video/yUrhlIMzwZU/v-deo.html
Very informative! Review the Sony A7CII next!
That's the plan!
Hey 👋 How do you combat focusing? I've recently started Videography and the focus jumps around sometimes. I use a Sony A7S III and Sony 70-200 f2.8 GM II.
@@PaulSmithDigital Hey there, if you film sports in autofocus mode, it’s never going to be perfect no matter what camera or lens you use. Here’s a video that explains what I mean in greater details: ua-cam.com/video/vgBpc2t9Sq8/v-deo.htmlsi=VszAWr9lF5o-JQDp
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks 🙏
Great video and thanks for the honest review. I myself am looking at buying an a6700, can I ask what monitor you are using? Thanks,
Thanks for the great feedback. My monitor is the Portkeys LH7P. I reviewed it in this video ua-cam.com/video/LZ1nhE8N1b4/v-deo.htmlsi=4Pt_fTTwZVXpZTu6
I love the a6700 but I would never use it to run at 4K 120fps for more than 20 minutes. I think it is a great starter camera for pro work, but if I was going to shoot slow mo for long periods I would drop back to 8bit and run at 4k 240fps just for fun. I would like to get an FX-30 at some point. At least I would not need to buy new lenses.
Which lens did you pair with the a6700 ?
The Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8
Great video! I shoot some sports for my team. It just also want to shoot 1 hour long videos for podcasts at 4k24p. Also want a camera for travel so slim body. A7c2, a6700, zve1 … ? Any suggestions.
All the cameras you mentioned can do what you're after. I would probably get an external fan as well just in case though. And if you want the best image quality, go with a full frame option.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Really? No post stabilization with catalyst browse or in your cutting program?
@@Simsel81 No, none at all. No stabilization in the lens either.
@@BeyondTheGame_E wow, Respect!
@@Simsel81 Thanks but honestly it's just practice. If you use the technique I explained in my other video, you'll get there quick too.
The camera is hot everywhere. You would have to cool it with bigger fan 😊
I can't make any promises since ultimately it depends on the conditions, but you should be fine. What's the problem with the FX30 shutter?
@@BeyondTheGame_E as far as I understand the fx30 due to the electronic shutter is bad in taking pictures in closed places.
@@SamiIssa Bad is a very strong way to put it. The way I see it, just because there's a better option available doesn't mean that this one is bad. It just means it's slightly less good.

I’m trying to decide between this and the A7III (same price in NZ) for filming rugby. Any advice would be appreciated
I personally would go with the A6700.
@@BeyondTheGame_E THANK UOU SO MUCH
What lens do you recommend for a6700 for sport video?
It depends on your budget, on which sport you are filming, and on how far you are filming the game from.
Also, the a6700 doesn’t have quite as good 4K 120p as the FX30. The FX30 has a better compression format for 4K 120p due to being able to utilize the faster Cfexpress cards. Other than that video quality is the same.
I don't know about that but I imagine you are right. The full size HDMI of the FX30 also allows you to do external recordings in higher quality.
How would you say the autofocus on this compares to the fx30/fx3? Wondering if the Ai autofocus is a leap or just something nice to have.
@@tekniqs Well the only other type of filming I do other than sports is when I film myself for my youtube videos. But considering that I'm sitting on a chair the whole time while my camera is on a tripod, any camera with eye tracking would do a great job. The typical situation where the new AI makes a difference is when you have a subject that is moving around in your frame quite a bit, especially in difficult lighting situations.
What is this external monitor you are using ?
It's a Portkeys monitor I reviewed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/LZ1nhE8N1b4/v-deo.html

hey you should take a cage for it cause the monitor is so heavy for the camera
It’s actually super light compared to other monitors the same size.
A firmware update has helped with the overheating issue.
Yeah I heard. I’d like to understand how it works though because overheating is much more related to hardware than firmware. Unless they simply raised the shutdown temperature threshold.

To be honest, I have no idea if you can take photos and film at the same time. There's probably a way but I've never done it. I also don't think your photos would look very good because you need a much higher shutter speed for sports photography. You're probably better off using screen shots from your video after the fact.
Imma stick with my panasonic lumix g85.

Either that or get a Ulanzi cooling fan. But the FX30 remains the most reliable option.
@@BeyondTheGame_E infact ulanzi fan work ?
@@CarCareHelp Like I said, it definitely helps but it's not as reliable as having an internal fan like in the FX30.
@@BeyondTheGame_E thanks alot bro
Dummy battery, external source and a fan constantly on, got me over an hour of non stop shooting in 100/120fps. at a room temperature.
20mins without anything, 40mins with a fan only, and 60mins with all together.
I've not had a warning coming on since using this combo, shooting the whole hockey and basketball pre game/game. As well as shooting motocross outdoor..😊
The key is to keep the fan on all the time from when the camera is switched on.
My only concern now is the micro hdmi and a single sd slot.. but it is what it is 😊
Sounds like a good setup!
Was it the Sigma 70-200?
No, I was using the Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8.
@@BeyondTheGame_E Do you have any issues with it not being par focal and shooting sports?
@@JeffCorcelius it would be fun, don’t get me wrong, but almost all photography lenses are not parfocal. Only cinema lenses are and they are way more expensive. Because it adds sharpness. Check out this video I made on the topic ua-cam.com/video/96KFhI45uRM/v-deo.htmlsi=wNmC38nHhqw8wpQ1
get the new fan for the camera by the same company they make a new one that stays on the camera better and dont fall off like that one
Yeah I saw that, I talked about it towards the end of the video. But my cameras have internal fans so I don't have a need for an external one.
the whole team looks like buzz lightyear😂

a6700 is not a 4k60 camera. It is a dad camera and you can run it all day at 4k24/30 without a fan. Long form 4k60/120 is pro level recording needs.
Hey, im new to the channel and sports videos. Im getting a Sony A6400 w/18-135mm lens. Ill be filming basketball and football games what lens and frames would you recommend?
It highly depends on your budget. Your 18-135mm has a great zoom range for basketball but it's not the highest quality lens. For football I would recommend one those two lenses: ua-cam.com/video/YUPzUrHcyXo/v-deo.html
@@BeyondTheGame_E Thanks. For basketball im looking to get a 70-200 would that be better for basketball?
@@coachchrisbozeman It's better for football but it all depends on where you are filming from. It's fine filming from the stands but it will be way too tight if you try to film from the baseline for example.

I don't agree with you! I create commercial videos for restaurants, gym, festivals and other businesses with the a6700 camera, and you don't need an hour straight to film or shoot a commercial. So yes, it is definitely a professional camera.
