This game is the most amazing RPG I have EVER seen! I play D&D mainly, and this fixes every problem I have with it. Players are bored between turns? Not when you can take 2 reactions in response to the other creatures! The crafting system is uncreative, boring, and difficult to use well? Not in Utopia! Craft whatever you so choose! Make a cursed item, or a godlike artifact! Spellcasting is unbalanced and martial characters are weak? LITERALLY ANYONE CAN TAKE SPELLS, AND MAKE THEIR OWN!!! These are the main problems I have with D&D, and many other members of the community have them. Combine that with the fact that this game isn't owned by a heartless corporation, and I think the D&D will come out in droves for this. With the pure craftsmanship and love that went into this great game, combined with everyone being upset with WOTC right now, I genuinely think that Utopia could change the RPG gaming space.
This is actually so exciting and invigorating to hear! It makes me so happy to hear you enjoying the game and its features, and I really hope it supports you campaigns!! More features and better wording are coming soon, development is happening fast!
I absolutely love this! The community is amazing! And the thing that got me interested is spell crafting, wanna make a nuke? You can do that! Wanna be immortal? You can also do that? And it only took 3 hours for me to fully learn the game as well (with exception of equipment)
Hey, that's so cool to hear!! If you ever need help with equipment please feel free to reach out, either here or Discord! It's always really exciting to get new questions!
I look at TTRPG systems as cocktails, totally different for different moods, people or even time of day There is not universally perfect one But maaaan Utopia to me is as if someone handed me a drink I never knew I needed
both of the utopia videos have showed up in my reccomended shortly after they were made, im glad the algorithm keeps bringing me back! excited to check out this system
@millerk7456 It's really cool to be treated by the algorithm, makes me think that people like it! And I'm excited for you to see, you know where to find me if there's ever a question!
I'll be honest, when I watched the first video I thought "this looks cool, but I'll pass", but you managed to convince me to give it a try with this video, so congrats ig! EDIT: My thoughts below after reading the manuscript: The first thing I like is the fact that your(?) website doesn't require me to put in credit card info to get a free product, often times I'm excited to try a free new game but back out because I'm way too paranoid to give such personal info to a site I don't trust. The book is really pretty to look at and seems well written, considering how you managed to fit all the "what's an rpg" stuff in just 5 pages without leaving anything too important out. I do have a few criticisms at this point, although it's not really related to the game: please, add bookmarks to your pdfs, it makes navigation so much easier since you don't need to memorize page numbers or keep going to the summary and back every time you want to check a specific species or talent tree. On a related note, you could also consider make the book cover be page 1, which will make navigating the pdf much easier, since the pdf page will match the book page. This isn't really necessary though and fairly easy to adapt to, and it's understandable if you choose not to do that. It also seems like the pdf's text is actually an image instead of actual text. This means you can't select, copy, or search any text on the pdf. I suggest adding an area in the character sheet to put your level in. It's pretty easy to figure out from your necessary xp or total points, but being able to tell your level at a glance can be a small quality of life improvement. Also, the Inventory section on the fillable character sheet seems to be layed out incorrect. I just read the rules for grappling and scaling. I love it. The rules themselves don't jump out as anything special to me, but the fact that scaling is just a "reverse grapple" makes both mechanics much easier to remember. This seems like straight up good game design, good job! I couldn't find anything that talked about what Items you start with, you should probably include something of the sort. Even if it's up to DM discretion, it'd be useful to have a paragraph saying something on the lines of "the average adventurer starts with about 200 silver pieces worth of equipment". My final thoughts after reading the book: this rpg system actually looks pretty good. From what I've gathered, it seems well designed and you clearly have a lot of passion for the project. Of course, I still haven't played the game myself so my opinion isn't really set in stone, but I had a good enough time reading it to think about DMing a short adventure with it some time soon. I expected it to mostly be things that had already been done before, but I really think it has it's own identity and has many aspects that separate it from similar systems. The pdfs aren't that well made, but the actual book and sheet look pretty clean (except for a few typos, of course). Of course, all of the rough patches are perfectly understandable, since the system still seems to be on version 0.1. Overall, I like it. I'll probably DM it sometime in the future, but I doubt I'll remember to come back and update the comment unless I get a notification from it in like 3 months.
Imagine building a human getting the two skills that increase block and dodge then doing it again in the tactics tree for EXACTLY 10 points and now you just don't get hit by two attacks a turn since you doubled your defenses and get the dual weilder feat with some heavy weapons spending 8 stamina on it every turn so you don't suck at offensive. The human fighter cannot be escaped-
Your TTRPG system is the second one I got to know after D&D, and I fell in love with it! I'm very excited to finish reading the book and introduce Utopia to my friends! Also, it would be really cool if you had official campaigns one day 😊 Still, creating a characters is a tedious process, not everyone likes "Microsoft Excel" gameplay. Maybe you have some hints on how to introduce this game to less experienced players?
I really appreciate it, that's so exciting to hear!! I would love to write and run some official campaigns!! I think that may be a good idea; my How-to-Play video was a smack at it, but I think we may be able to do even better~ As well, the book's wording will be getting some upgrades!
@@oridont Thanks for your reply! I'd also like to know (as a game developer) if it would be ok for others to make tools or use your system for an RPG videogame, or is it all copyrighted?
I can say from experience that it’s not hard to teach! I’ve showed a couple people who have barely touched a Ttrpg, and I would say just explain vibes over mechanics to help them choose what to take.
I would love to know how the campaign goes!! There's some typos and weird wordings in the prototype, so please always feel free to ask questions! Discord is fastest, but I check comments too :)
I actually already started work on putting together a goblin species with the subspecies being red and green respectively. Red goblins seeming at first to be your typical "savage" goblins but the more you look into it yhe more you realize their specific traditions and culture, and the green goblins just going the janky tinker route. Red goblins being more "lawful" abd traditionalist with green goblins being more "chaotic" and creative thinking.
also want to say for the people in the comments, if you join the discord there is now a beta rule set for making custom races so you don't have to worry about eye balling it
Hello, there! Really loved the video. If i may i have a suggestion. I think that the best way to make people that are on the fence about whether or not they fund/purchase Utopia is demonstrating the ability to take characters from other TTRPG into this one. I believe that taking classes(for this example i use D&D's) like Warlock or subclasses like Drakewarden(subclass tied to a pet) and managing to integrate them into a new TTRPG in a better way, powerscale or thematic wise, are what will draw more people into it. Maybe making a video demonstrating that would be helpful to attract more people into Utopia. Cheers!
Between all fascinating customization options that feel like a perfect modern fusion between an MMO, GURPS, and the SDC & HP mechanics and dodge/parry rolls from Palladium's MegaVersal System from Rifts, I'm kind of fascinated at how this project is panning out in terms of ambitious TRPG rule sets. Best of luck to all your future endeavors thus far. The leveling mechanics in particular (particularly how there seems to rarely be an example of a "Level 1" character and you're starting off at Lv. 10 with no cap in sight akin to a Disgaea game's crazy high level cap if it spanned infinitely past Lv. 9,999 (lol)) are definitely something I wish had more elaboration on, but I'd probably get the hang of it once I end up reading the manuscript at a later date. Good luck with the Kickstarter too.
Thank you so much for the good luck and the interest! The levels do go on forever, and in the case you run out of talents, there are stackable talents; however, with the core guide alone, it'd take 10s of millions of XP to get there, and there'll be even more talents in the future! I hope you enjoy, and thanks for checking it out!
Honestly have been enjoying going through the prototype version and the customization is very cool. Really the only thing that needs to be changed in presentation is that you put the "what talent tree this is" with the details at the bottom of the page. Why is it not on the top? That throws me off every time since that stuff I would expect to read first and then get into the talent tree! Edit: as I go through the video, I would definitely love you to include guidelines on how to build your own talent trees. Maybe even have the means to replace species with background and species turns really into pure flavor!
That's super fair! I never thought about the descriptions, honestly I would love to! There's a custom species talent guide on the Discord, I'd like to officialize it into the prototype soon, but if you want to see it early it's there!
I think what would really be useful is providing general guidelines for gamemasters on how to create new species, talents, and talent trees. Giving an overview on the methodology regarding designing them can incentivize players to think about what they would want out of the system that currently isn't in the game by default. Additionally, I think it might be smart to expand the concept of species, either something more along the lines of background or origin. This is partly semantic, but for settings which might not have other "species" in which to play it could mechanically broaden the concept enough to fit other kinds of games. Overall, I'm still very interested on seeing how this system develops and I'm happy to see the amount of positive attention it's currently receiving. I hope working on these videos and reading the comments can give you the necessary reflection and feedback needed to make this system the best it can possibly be.
For sure! The Discord currently has a custom species kit that I'm working out, but it's functional as we speak! I'm hoping to add it with modular creature design to the prototype!
I found ur channel yesterday through the previous video. I couldn't finnish the book yet, but I did go through the species. One thing I saw is the human race's talent tree. An idea popped up in my mind: could they switch a race tree. I might join the discord to discuss this, but I want to play it with my group first to see if I fully embrace the system.
I’m making my own game like this but yours is like the ddc version to my adnd 2e! Pretty neat! Also hard to follow because everything in mine corilated to everything (mine is based off the Kabbalah with parts functioning as each part of building your characters spirit). I’m jealous your actually done Iv been doing mine since 2020 as well! Mine will be posted as Tower of Dice here before the end of the year of the dragon! Been having panic attacks over it so I know exactly how you feel mate! We got this!
Fantastic explanation, and such a well produced explainer. Whats a Kickstarter? Where do I find it? I feel like I could play this game after watching this video and the one you posted a couple weeks ago.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!! Kickstarter is crowdfunding site where you can pre-order the final version of Utopia TTRPG and support the project!! You can play the prototype for free in the description, or find the Kickstarter here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/oridont/utopia-ttrpg/posts/4228811?ref=ksr_email_creator_new_post_comment
I never played dnd, but i always was interested in it. No idea how to play it or with who. But yet i couldnt help but think of a character to make with this system, so i thought i would make a cactus like being. Which would be a brazen oxtus, just with cactus characteristics
That actually makes me so happy; the art of the brazen has little bits of cactus on it, and I always wondered what that might be like, it's so cool to hear you making that real!!
This a great explanation and has me more excited for the game. I read over the skill trees, and I enjoy how they are very loose options, but I'm sure some people can still see them as railroads if they have a wacky enough idea. For spells, abilities, items, and especially skill trees, I wou.d be interested to see your thought philosophy on balance and power-scaling. So that in the future, players can make their own trees and items and such. I saw a lot of those roots in your pdfs, but I'd be interested if you peeled back that design layer a bit more to make the game more customizeable.
Yeah! A lot of the options I designed were made specifically to keep track of the least amount possible, other than what's innately on your character sheet, moreso for ease of use and character creation. Lots of features will be introduced in expansions, but I wanted the core system to be as lightweight as possible while still leaving lots of room for development and creativity, if that makes sense. If you're interested in it, there's a custom species manual in the Discord under #utopia-updates! It does include custom talent trees, which may be a fun read!
Hey, i think it's fun because at the same time and ate the age as you, i start writting a ttrpg too, whith the same global idea. I read your's and it's beatifull. Good luck for next
I think critiques didn't actually read through the stuff and just assumed that it's not very creative. I read through most of the stuff, and I'm absolutely in love with this game. It was love at first sight. I'm going to go in-depth of reading the lore and understanding this game just to not have anyone to play with.
That's so sweet, and it really does mean a lot! If you're looking for groups, there's threads and channels for finding groups in the Discord, if that's something you're interested in!
A bit disappointed my comment didn't make it in the plaster comments all over the screen shot. Thought I had a real chance this time. Thought: you can still make the wizard who punches through brick walls, they are just a lot higher level. GURPS, HERO System and their ilk are probably actually impossible to fully balance. But they explicitly choose to try to maximize character customizability at the cost of the ability to be highly balanced. Not every game needs to make that sacrifice. Edit: that level of customization also increases the barrier to entry. I've had the pdf open since the last video, haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I aim to do so before the Kickstarter ends, I just need to make this one Pathfinder 1E character first, got a game Friday...
I'm sorry about that! I usually read all of my comments, or do my best to, just low on time~ I agree! In a truly customizable system, anything should be possible with enough levels. It's actually a really weird form of balance when it comes to making everything fit together; like, if you want to do everything, keep throwing levels at it. Utopia includes some talents you can keep getting over and over for edge cases, but as it stands, it takes 10s of millions of XP to do so When you do end up getting to reading it, let me know what you think! Discord is open as well if you're looking for playgroups or want faster responses from myself and others!
I love renown systems in Games. Usually someone has a hidden Stat that goes up or down depending on how friendly they were to an NPC. Do you think it's possible for that kind of system to be in Utopia for the people that want to Roleplay instead of focus on Combat?
you know i've been keeping an eye on this project and i've wondered; is there some kind of custom content database? stuff like homebrewed races, variant character sheets, stuff like that
There’s plans to make a database of things like that in the future, but currently people on the discord are making tons of homebrew stuff and sharing it! They’re even making a spellbook of tons of custom spells created by the community!
Yeah! Some is still getting developed and I'm doing my best to keep up: I'm currently having the website redone, as well as trying to get it setup for Roll20 and Foundry!
As a gurps starter i am glad you are working on a new universal game, honestly class system is too restrictive that is found in dnd and such. The great thing about your rpg is a skill tree type system that makes things easier to understand.
It's really cool to hear that!! I've been a fan of the tree system for quite a while; I'm going to admit, it was pretty tough to implement but I'm kind of in love with it now
Hey dude, I'm really looking forward to a video explaining DMing in Utopia The ins and outs of it and all I'd really appreciate that, as many would be. I'm sure
"Doesn't it feel redundant to base a sub-trait off another sub-trait?" Argueably DnD's health is done like that, the sub trait of your CON score determines part of your HP. Also, in GURPS your Dodge and Basic Move are based off Basic Speed, which is based off Dexterity and Health (something akin to DnD's CON). You can also argue that your sense scores are sub-traits of your Perception score (they can be raised without raising Per) and that's a sub-trait of Intelligence So I think it makes perfect sense to base a sub-trait off another sub-trait
Does anyone know if there are more Talents in Utopia than the shown 7 trees? It seems to me like thoose 7 trees with ~12 talents per tree only give you the Option of 84 Talents on a Character. And in a specific "class" its only the option of ~12 talents. I dont know how many you can choose in one character so i assume you can pick maybe half of them? So thats 41. But doesnt pathfinder e1 have like 500 Feats or something? Sure some of them are like increase a save by 2 or increase ac by 1 and the Talents in Utopia are probably game changers i guess? So if i go with 1/5 of the Pathfinder Feats that is still like 100 feats you can choose. And on top of that you get customization with classes and mutliclassing. Can somone explain to me where the "Most customizable TTRPG" thing comes from in Utopia? I would realy like to see it but i think i just miss something.
Forgot to note that Pathfinder of course doesnt let you pick all Feats in one Character either, i just meant that you can choose from like a 100 and in Utopia choosing feats seems to be all you are allowed to pick.
It takes to around level 500-600 levels to get every talent which is WAYYYYY higher than practically any realistic campaign would run. But even so, there are plans for more talent trees in the future expansions!
For sure! Every character has access to every talent tree, and most talents take more than 1 level, based on powerful they are~ As well, there's almost 50 specialist talents in the core book that you can choose from as well, every 10 levels! (Similar to feats) Since some talents take more than 1 level, you'd be somewhere around level 500 before getting all of them; you level pretty fast in this game, but it's a lot of XP to get there~ As well, more talent trees will be included in each expansion of Utopia! 9 in the first expansion are planned :)
as a guy who read the GURPS 4e phb equivalent mostly cover to cover, I call bs on any claim that this ttrpg is not very customizable. is it as customizable as GURPS? no. will it be that customizable in three decades? I'm inclined to say yes
So I think the system is great right now but the only thing I'm seeing that's missing is an alternate way to get stats without leveling up, kind of like d&d's books four specific stats, but instead of books, I don't know a workout system or better yet depending on your fighting style some stats will automatically grow when you level up something.
A steam punk world is perfect for Utopia! The main lore for it is a high fantasy and sci-fi mix, I love it! And thank you so much for the 100k wishes!!
I love level-less classless TTRPG systems which is why I'm interested, but you barely touched the comparison with GURPS, and I think there's room for elaboration. What makes you say this has lower barrier to entry than GURPS? What are the other pro/cons? Few explicit examples would be nice as well.
That totally makes sense! I think I'd want to do some more clear comparison and research before I fleshed out that topic completely, just to make sure I'm transparent and honest. But in my experience, GURPS is ultimately going to have more calculations and more things to keep track of, while having more versatility and customization granted from the calculations~ I'll have to see if I can find some exact examples!
A cambion with the swift strikes thingy and a buff enchantment spell that gives you extra damage per hit. If demonic cambion you will be dealing 15d8 a turn assuming you only travel once
Or brazen oxii use all your stamina except the amount you need to cast berserk to increase the damage of your next strike by one billion d8 then hit em with a berserk double damage fire boosted punch dealing uncountable damage
For sure! Animated things are usually taking the Automaton stat block, but you could totally design your own species for that; guide is in the Discord if you want it :D
@@oridont oh really !? When i asked to do this in the dnd community people attacked me and called me out for being a redflag of a player... Tbf i am relatively new. I would love to try it here though, Thanks !

I am interested and I have been reading the Rulebook. However, some things have been confusing me. Is there a private place to message these things. With a little clarification they won't be problems, so I see no need to air dirty luandery.
For sure! The Discord has a #utopia-patch-notes just to go over some things that were typos, balance issues that weren't caught, and things of that nature~ As well, lots of people asks a ton of amazing questions in the Discord; you can scroll through or asks for yourself if you're interested!
@jeremyhamonanganhutapea3340 I do have some! Unfortunately they're not super well fleshed out yet, still a work in progress as to deciding where everything will land and what they will mean; but this is pretty motivating to get to working on it!
GURPS was exactly what it wasn't supposed to be: rules-heavy, a unique specific system for everything, and another mountain of rules for every setting. It was not generic, nor universal, and the central RPG rules weren't great.
I think I'd struggle with GURPS quite a bit myself. I think for a bit it'd be very exciting, but the calculative load would be pretty darn taxing, personally

I joined the discord at midnight and in the morning I saw you posted a video 20 minutes ago
That's amazing! It's always a rush to share new content!
both of the utopia videos have showed up in my reccomended shortly after they were made, im glad the algorithm keeps bringing me back! excited to check out this system
@millerk7456 It's really cool to be treated by the algorithm, makes me think that people like it! And I'm excited for you to see, you know where to find me if there's ever a question!
Great job with the video Ori. Keep up the hard work and be prepared for the new success. :)
That's so awesome, thank you so much! It's really cool to see it gaining traction, happy to have you here 🤍
I love this game style, I understood the skill versitility.
Thank you for your support! It’s awesome to see others appreciating the skill versatility in this game!
I'll be honest, when I watched the first video I thought "this looks cool, but I'll pass", but you managed to convince me to give it a try with this video, so congrats ig!
EDIT: My thoughts below after reading the manuscript:
The first thing I like is the fact that your(?) website doesn't require me to put in credit card info to get a free product, often times I'm excited to try a free new game but back out because I'm way too paranoid to give such personal info to a site I don't trust.
I would absolutely love to hear additional thoughts! It'll probably be easier for me to catch if you reply to this comment; I hope it goes super well!
The human fighter cannot be escaped-
Oh my god, /the human fighter returns/
Your TTRPG system is the second one I got to know after D&D, and I fell in love with it!
I'm very excited to finish reading the book and introduce Utopia to my friends!
Also, it would be really cool if you had official campaigns one day 😊
Still, creating a characters is a tedious process, not everyone likes "Microsoft Excel" gameplay.
I’ve showed a couple people who have barely touched a Ttrpg, and I would say just explain vibes over mechanics to help them choose what to take.

absolutely please make a video going over your thoughts and insights when designing a talent tree!
Yeah, the oxtus race changed my browsing history forever.
I'm pretty sure I'm glad to hear it; hope that's in a good way for you!
That’s such a fun idea! I love it!
I am SO excited to see the creativity you're applying to the system! That sounds like a really deep culture and fun species to play!!
also want to say for the people in the comments, if you join the discord there is now a beta rule set for making custom races so you don't have to worry about eye balling it
⬆️
This will be the system I'll use for my first dnd game!
That's so exciting! I'd love to hear about it, and I'm here for questions if you ever have any!
Cheers!
That's a really good idea!! I think that may be a good thing for short, perhaps?
@@oridont Or a series of shorts covering different classes / subclasses from different TTRPGs.
When will we get to play 😮 its amazing mate🎉
Oh we can play a Prototype Version on it right now for free, it's in the description of the vid
Yup yup, free version is already available
Yalls are on top of it, goodness!
I never thought about the descriptions, honestly
I would love to! There's a custom species talent guide on the Discord, I'd like to officialize it into the prototype soon, but if you want to see it early it's there!
Downloading discord right now just to join it
I'm so excited to have you, and that's awesome to hear!!
Im actually using this for a black clover dnd and this helps a lot for some ideas
That's amazing! I really wish I ended up watching or reading more black clover, honestly

I never played dnd, but i always was interested in it. No idea how to play it or with who. But yet i couldnt help but think of a character to make with this system, so i thought i would make a cactus like being. Which would be a brazen oxtus, just with cactus characteristics
That’s so cute I seriously love that concept
Good luck for next

oh yeah please make a video about the talent tree making
Glad to hear it!! If you're interested, there's a mini-guide in the Discord!
Ooh, alright, @@oridont. Thank you!
Utopia includes some talents you can keep getting over and over for edge cases, but as it stands, it takes 10s of millions of XP to do so
When you do end up getting to reading it, let me know what you think! Discord is open as well if you're looking for playgroups or want faster responses from myself and others!
I want to play this so bad
You can for free! Link to the manuscript and the Discord!
I love renown systems in Games. Usually someone has a hidden Stat that goes up or down depending on how friendly they were to an NPC. Do you think it's possible for that kind of system to be in Utopia for the people that want to Roleplay instead of focus on Combat?
I think that's more than feasible! Honestly, a renown system I think would be worth implementing, if I'm being so dead honest
you know i've been keeping an eye on this project and i've wondered; is there some kind of custom content database? stuff like homebrewed races, variant character sheets, stuff like that
There’s plans to make a database of things like that in the future, but currently people on the discord are making tons of homebrew stuff and sharing it!

HEY MY INKLING STUFF!!! YOOOOO NO WAYYY 3:41
YESSSS Hehehehe thank the editor, they're amazing
"Doesn't it feel redundant to base a sub-trait off another sub-trait?"
Argueably DnD's health is done like that, the sub trait of your CON score determines part of your HP.
Also, in GURPS your Dodge and Basic Move are based off Basic Speed, which is based off Dexterity and Health (something akin to DnD's CON). You can also argue that your sense scores are sub-traits of your Perception score (they can be raised without raising Per) and that's a sub-trait of Intelligence
So I think it makes perfect sense to base a sub-trait off another sub-trait
I really wish I would have thought of those examples when the first video came out! Those are great examples, and thank you for mentioning them!

(Similar to feats)
Since some talents take more than 1 level, you'd be somewhere around level 500 before getting all of them; you level pretty fast in this game, but it's a lot of XP to get there~ As well, more talent trees will be included in each expansion of Utopia!
Well that's awesome to hear!! It's always really cool to get a positive remark from an experienced player
So I think the system is great right now but the only thing I'm seeing that's missing is an alternate way to get stats without leveling up, kind of like d&d's books four specific stats, but instead of books, I don't know a workout system or better yet depending on your fighting style some stats will automatically grow when you level up something.
The Prowess tree allows you to gain subtrait points, and some items can as well, if that helps any!
I hope somoene makes this online were you dont need friends
I hope the narrative is so good that it pushes you to play in a group. ;)

I don't really know much about tabletops but can i make a steam punk world by the way uou should be at 100k
