  • A tiny bit less over-the-top than Saunders' other collections, but I'm not sure it's a good thing.

I just finished this book and The End of FIRPO in the World is now one of my favorite short stories. After I finished it I had to read it over again. I admit I can be sentimental.

I can't wait for you to read Tenth of December!!! It's the only Saunders I've read and that book fucking blew me the fuck away.

He has a very realistic, even comic way of writing. But it doesn't leave you feeling foolish.
Sometimes you find yourself sympathizing between sentences, about how characters think about themselves and others (like Morse).
My favorite has been《Sea oak》 and 《Firpo》 has tugged at my heartstrings.
I would definitely read it again.

Pastoralia and Sea Oak were great. I did find the stories similar in tone but maybe Saunders was going for a cohesive world type of deal? Also "Dicky characters" haha.
I think based on what you aid I'll try CivilWarland in Decline next. great video as always.

I have only read 10th of December but I really liked that collection except for one story. I have the other 3 collections on my shelf. Need to pick one of them up soon. Eager to hear what you thing of 10th.

Tenth of December is his best work imo. Then IPN, then Braindead Megaphone, then Pastoralia.

Was just looking over the New York Times list, notable books. And I could not remember if I had read this one or not. Your review came in handy.

My favourite ones were: Pastoralia, Winky, The end of FIRPO in the World, The Falls. Didn't enjoy that much Sea Oak to be honest

Jesus, isn't it past midnight in Italy? That's Commitment!
So would you say that this collection is underwhelming in and of itself, or do you believe you would have enjoyed it more if you would have read it before the others?

I do believe it's not as good as In Persuasion Nation or Civilwarland, but I would probably have been a little less annoyed with some elements of it if I hadn't read so much Saunders lately. Bottomline is, do read Saunders, but don't overdose on it :)

I'd love you to do an in-depth short story feature WITH SPOILERS of a short story you love sometime. Similar to For the love of Ryan's short story Saturdays. (Victory Lap) by Saunders for example. ('cos u will love it!) Flex those critical muscles!
Personally I find GS a bit too hip & wacky. An awesome ss collection from last year was Mark Haddon's The Pier Falls. Very dark, Sf, fantasy, genre elements as well as more "literary" traditional short story stuff. NEVER samey. Blew me away.

I'll keep it in mind, I liked The Curious Incident a lot in high school :)

That story was a total waste of time. 4 hours gone forever
