@@prawnshop4573 Really?.Mine have never leaked grease .What I do have is a slight ooze of oil., I did replace the seals (OEM), but it still leaks. Having had it apart I can see why - there is no bearing @ the outer end of the shaft, just a seal. It relies on the wheel hub + bearings and the CV joint to keep it central in the seal - a bad design.
@@gregculverwell yours is rare case. Every single solid axle landcruiser that has come to my shop has this issue. It is a design flaw that has no long term fix. This is why toyota gave up on this design.

@@DaciaProject have you not seen the vehicles roaming America? We have no "engineer" approval for modifications. We don't even have any real annual safety inspections on private vehicles. Putting 40s on a Land Cruiser is nothing as the axles are full floating heavy duty units capable of laughing off 40s. There's Jeeps running around on even bigger tires with weak Dana 35 axles. California for example requires a bi annual emissions inspection and that is all. If you register a vehicle from another state in California, it must pass a very simple "Brake & Light" inspection which is exactly what it sounds like. All lights and brake system should pass one time only.

For me it is . I just drove on the Interstate at 75 mph average in cruise control for hours. I enjoy it a lot that I don't see my self spending 78k on the new Land cruiser...
They don't last forever and you can take them through a car wash. How long they last depends on a bunch of different factors like is the car garage parked or not. But you can get a good 3+ years out of a good wrap generally. Also the panels facing the sun will wear out faster than the side panels. But they are a good option for the price if going with paint is too much (and it is for most people) and you can switch up the color of you vehicle whenever you want much easier and cheaper with a wrap. Also price fluctuates a lot depending on where you are and the type of vehicle you are wrapping. My mustang would probably be $2000 to fully wrap compared to $3000 this owner paid for his Land Cruiser.
I would never use a car wash personally its just bad for the paint and wrap. They last 3 years if you leave it in the sun. 5 years if you take care of it.
I have a ‘94 80 and I’ve wheeled with a Disco. They’re comparable from a capability standpoint, but the 80 has stronger axles and is “beefier” overall. It’d be a good match, but if the 80 was factory locked front and rear, it’d be the winner.
The factory lockers blow. You have to drive snake patterns for miles to get them to engage and replacing them costs the same as new ARB air lockers. Full time locked or LSD in the back will fishtail, click and mess up handling in normal conditions, I’d air lock for sure.
@@JDMinTexas then they either got lucky at the port (which doesn't make it legal and puts them in a vulnerable position, potentially those could be seized) or the Cruisers are older than 25 years old.

Wow 3,000 bucks for the wrap? Very expensive to have it done in the US… in Indonesia, for big SUV like VX80 probably its gonna cost around 1,000USD .. however, the price for a good condition 1996 VX80 is around USD30K - USD35K 😁
You can use right hand drive in the US....the issue is vehicles have to be 25 yrs old to be imported to the US...and there is a ton of documentation to be done.

5:22 "engines on these...dead reliable". Seriously? That truck has a 1fz-fe, not the 3fe. The 1fz-fe is famous for blowing head gaskets, leaving you stranded when it decides to let go. Lets not forget about the PHH. There is a reason why people LS swap the FZJ80 when the 1fz-fe lets go... I have owned a LX450 with a 1fz-fe for the last 20 years, whose HG let go at 96K miles when it was only 5 years old.

Worth the hype? More so. Worth the money? That’s debatable. I was on the hunt for my land cruiser when I found a 1996 fzj80 with factory e lockers. 300k miles. Single owner female in Vale Colorado. Carfax said it. Had every single checkup at the Toyota dealership. I got for 2k cash. That was not only worth the hype but worth the money. 25k later I had Slee Off-road install 6” suspension lift, sliders, arb front bumper, warn winch, low rang reduction gears, front and rear pinions and new front axle. Daddy had a beast now!
Four link rear end, three link front end from the factory, you can fit 35s with a mild 2-inch lift and even the "unlocked" ones will get you through most obstacles you'd find on the average trail. Where the Land Cruisers shine is how they are built. Climb under an 80 and start measuring the diameters and thicknesses of suspension components, frame, etc. and you'll begin to understand that aside from a few weaknesses that are easy to correct, there isn't much that can stop a TLC. The A44xx transmissions, while a little awkward (and a performance limiter, IMO) are built for buses and extremely stout. The 1FZ is a high revving masterpiece of an engine. There's a reason that there are 300K, 500K, and 1M mile benchmarks for these trucks. Pound for pound the 80 Series is the best 4x4 ever built.e
I have owned several 3rd gen 4Runners a few with factory rear lockers and currently owner a LC100 with ATRAC and the 3rd gen with a locker is much more capable than a LC100.
I liked the video before it loaded because of the 80's. I disliked when he said his wife made him sell his first LC and I was looking for a second dislike button when he mentioned he sold his 3rd gen 4Runner because of the wife. Come on guys, what's wrong with you??? it's your money, you got to spend it anyway you want... and that works the other way around too, couples should respect each other not restrict... cool ride, not so much the wife.
I love these, but yeah, the engine is down on power for pulling big things up hill, and still gets about the same mileage as I get in my 200. That said, if I ever have the chance to get the pickup version somehow (70 series?), I’d jump on it without even hesitating. Truck looks great though man.
16 mph is what I get, owned it for 20+ years fully built. I dont hot rod it and take my time,. Almost 400,000 on the clock. My 2004 LC is a gas guzzler its getting about 11 mpg " I hot rod that one" it's also built for overland .
Also, don’t forget that elevation plays a role in fuel mileage. I live in Texas, but any time I’m in Colorado I have noticeably improved fuel mileage in even when not in the mountains.

Really?.Mine have never leaked grease .What I do have is a slight ooze of oil.,
I did replace the seals (OEM), but it still leaks.

Could it be that they are being over packed with grease?
The spherical part on mine actually went rusty.
I'm shocked dealers are not buying old used Land Rovers and Land Cruisers doing restomods. Tuners have been on this for awhile.
18 years and 245,000 miles on my supercharged FZJ80. Lol…I remember 25 mph running the gauntlet, before adding the supercharger 10 years ago. My old 60 was not much better. It’s kinda fun passing up unsuspecting 100s in an 80 going up the pass.
All said, nice build. I’m running the 1st gen Slee Short Bus and single swing out rear - with an Aussie Locker in the rear.
Just bought My 95 for 3400. 190.000 miles. Our daily Driver. Can't wait to get a pair of slee Bumpers!! I bought it because I have been turning wrenches for 35 years.... I drove past it for a week and decided to stop and look at it. I thought it was just an old dirty toyota. Lol..... Boy , I got lucky 👍💯

He's not worried, he's been getting the headache excuse for years 😂
I have a 94 model 80 series most basic version the DX diesel 1hz with 395,000kms on her and she is the most reliable, capable and indestructible 4wd. Blows no smoke and idles like new. Amazing vehicle. Toyota's finest.
I just purchased a TRD Supercharged and Triple Locked 1997 40th Anniversary Edition Land Cruiser coming soon to my channel ;)
Killer 80! And a great story behind it. Any ideas on what suspension setup (Ron, you reading these comments?!?!)? Looked like some remote res shocks peeking out, but couldn't tell...and likely something in the 2.5" lift ballpark....anyone?
It's a solid looking 80 Ron. Props
Yay 80 love. Those bumpers and sliders are looking 👌.

I too wanted 35’s on my 07 FJ Cruiser. But glad I went with 33’s.

As an owner of a FJ Cruiser on 35s, I’m glad it’s on 35s and soon moving to 37s. 33s weren’t cutting the mustard.

Is there any issue in the US with inspection or can you literally put any size tire on an LC? 40s are ok, or?
Got lucky and grabbed a 96 FZJ80 a year before the prices went crazy. Did some work to it and its been absolutely amazing.
I have a 96 and bought it for $1,600 almost 3 years ago at 280 K miles. Still my daily driver. I'm just wondering what is worth now.
If it has dif lockers 10,000 if not 1,600
I look around at all the 4wd’s in the world and i can honestly say when i got out and see my 1990 GXL 80 series non turbo manual diesel beast in my driveway i think its the best looking 4wd ever made. It has its peculiarities but I have never been stuck, and when i go remote i always feel confident. I love mine more than life itself 😁
It’s slow, but I see that as a time to enjoy the environment around me more🥰
No it's not the best looking 4wd ever
The best looking ever is the Nissan Patrol y60 and by far better than the j80 in off-road
Not my problem if you don't know it or weren't released in usa
80 Series is the GOAT.
my father in law bought one from a PGA golf trainer with 105k miles, lol im not gonna say we treated it the same as the previous owner but lets say this thing has been in two accidents from driving rough. but let me say. no other car would have rode off into the sunset with the damage it had. IT IS A TANK!! 100 percent recommend! BUT get skinny AT tires for good MPG and good traction!
My 80’s wheels need refurbishing. Any way to know what was used to refurbish his wheels? Paint or Plasti-Dip? If paint, I’d really like to know the brand/part number and how it’s holding up.
Use u.s.a. wheels sandblast and recoat in toyota stock color code had mine done 3 years ago still look great
Awesome video… and im glad he bought that TLC80 and put love money and time to it… im sure it’ll last you a lifetime …. Congrats :)
What is the color code of the paint?
For me it is . I just drove on the Interstate at 75 mph average in cruise control for hours. I enjoy it a lot that I don't see my self spending 78k on the new Land cruiser...
What's the website for the roof rack?
With a wrap, do they last forever and if so... can it be taken to a carwash?
@@protoroll Thanks alot. Seems I'll just save for a full paint instead.

THIS!
@@cardenbertrand2493 I’m DYING to see the two compared. You never see them together. There are zero videos out there. Hint hint
I have a ‘94 80 and I’ve wheeled with a Disco. They’re comparable from a capability standpoint, but the 80 has stronger axles and is “beefier” overall. It’d be a good match, but if the 80 was factory locked front and rear, it’d be the winner.
@@cardenbertrand2493 with having only owned my D2 as a project and never having used it and zero time in an 80…that’s what I expected.
Right on! Enjoy your D2. They’re super cool rigs.
The factory lockers blow. You have to drive snake patterns for miles to get them to engage and replacing them costs the same as new ARB air lockers. Full time locked or LSD in the back will fishtail, click and mess up handling in normal conditions, I’d air lock for sure.

Go to Venezuela, you can buy 2007 land cruisers 80 series from 14 to 16k in mint condition. 2k more to get it to the U.S
You can't import a vehicle that new unless it meets all EPA and DOT requirements, which the Venezuelan spec will not.
@@EliZabielski maybe depends of the state cause in Miami there is a lot of land cruisers from Venezuela

In 2005 you can go to the dealer and bought it one 80 series and one 100 series the same day? Or the 100 series doesn’t sell there?
@@paulsteverodriguez3549 until 2007 they sold the 80 series in autana trim and VX trim which it was the luxurious package. The 100 series was like a hidden treasure, we didn't see it in dealerships, just random government people imported a few of them.

How much u have into it and the mileage ?
Ditch the petrol motor and put in a 1HDT on 20 pounds of boost, stick a manual gearbox into it with a VDJ79 gearbox and you will fall in love.
If only Americans used right hand drives, you can pick up super clean petrol 80 series in Australia for $5000AUD
You can use right hand drive in the US....the issue is vehicles have to be 25 yrs old to be imported to the US...and there is a ton of documentation to be done.
Almost 20 years of daily driven 97 close to 400,000 miles "Regular maintenance".
Its ran ever trail in the west with all the goodies. I'm getting old but my cruiser is not.

Yeah the 1FZ is a turd. Bad power, over complicated, horribly inefficient. Mine decided to eat it’s timing chain at 164k
But it's toyota, should be 100k before you chack oil level for first time.
I replaced my hg as preventative at 222,000 miles. Did the phh after that. I'm at 330,000. Never left me stranded. Ever.

100k prices are coming! good luck!

I love these, but yeah, the engine is down on power for pulling big things up hill, and still gets about the same mileage as I get in my 200. That said, if I ever have the chance to get the pickup version somehow (70 series?), I’d jump on it without even hesitating. Truck looks great though man.
Grewt built! Is there a link for this.. gamavidi.. roof rack guy?
Where is he getting 12-14 mpg from? I get a combined 10 and only have 31’s on mine
Maybe I drive more conservatively? The 12-14 MPG is consistent.
