The canal blockage in 2021 was no accident. We can launch things & people into space but we can't get a ship unstuck for a week in the only bottleneck in that part of the world?🤔🤥
hearing that sound in real life is fascinating, it vibrates your entire chest like a drum. hever seen the huge russian one but Swedish and Finnish ones.
Thanks for this! I only knew about crushing the ice with the weight of the ship. I had no clue about the other methods, nor the combinations thereof. I appreciate you including some up and coming ships that are under construction.
Foating sea ice (Drift ice) is moved by wind and currents. When sections of of drift ice collide, they became pack ice, and they may form ridges that look almost like mountain ranges. They can be up to 15 meters (50 ft) thick (most of this is not visible, under the water). Icebreakers try to avoid hitting those ridges whenever possible. But sometimes the only option is to go through the ridge.
There were no Ice breakers until a few hundred years ago. The ice caps were never broken since the beginning of time, now there are 1000's of ice breakers and the caps never rest. And we ask were their shrinking? 😒
hi im faris hilmi from sarawak. im a admirsl general of sarawak royal army. im very interested in this tank of yours and would like to buy one with my skibiddi dollars
Im curious how much ice breakers aid in melting sea ice. Im assuming it's negligible compared to climate change, but i also wouldnt be suprised if that assumption could be wrong.
There should be information about OK-150 and OK-900(a) which were used in Soviet designs, not sure if there's anything easily accessible about newer reactors.
It's probably not practical and someone has surely already thought this idea but I wonder- what if you had a second hull for the front breaker end that could retract when not breaking ice or the opposite- it retracts when not in the open Sea, so you can reshape the front for optimal ice-breaking and open sea travel. Of course, I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about beyond this video- so I'm just throwing poo at the wall :P
Most companies won't do it because of increase in crew cost (additional guard and better engineers), and it also doesn't really matter outside of northern sea route because other shipping routes are better suited for ships refueling on the way. Also mega-ships which have similar power need to a nuclear reactor might be going out of fashion. Emissions will likely be reduced until one of such ships is damaged due to some sort of military action, which will cause enough pushback from the public for nuclear powered ships to be prohibited entirely.
This video/channel would benefit greatly from a more dynamic/professional narrator. The information's interesting but it's delivered extremely dead-pan.
im pretty sure that this is a well trained Ai model due to some random stressing on certain words and a lot of random breaks in speech (probably in a attempt to imitate taking a breath) or some human with the most monotone and dead pan voice i have ever heard
I have a similar concern with the rockets.they send through the atmosphere..thousands. doesn't it compromise the protection from the rays from space..?
Small amount just due to how large ice sheets are and that they would likely refreeze after the shup passes. One of the bigger issues scientists are worried about (atleast if we start doing more shipping through the arctic) is black carbon from diesel exhaust scattering onto large areas of glaciers, changing albedo of the ice, and making it melt faster.
How do you know what I think is the way they break ice? I already know how an ice breaker "works", so your video title is a straight forward lie. 🤷🏻♂️
You are out of date! Swedish icebreakers have propellers at the front which suck and smash the ice. 1 bridges, one in front, and 1 in back. Also hover craft were used - again pulling the air out-put one in front of ship.
@11:47 warning of globull warning. al gore said in 2009 that all arctic ice would be gone by 2013. fake video. trying to convince people there still is arctic ice.
Why don’t they have some sorts of wheels in the front so when the boat climbs onto the ice it can sort of pull itself along on the front wheels. Would be so much more efficient!
@@divoulos5758 1. Wheels wouldnt colide they just roll on the ice where it is not broken yet 2. Two spinning wheeels is literally 2 electic motors and two wheels and maybe some sort of piston that you can lift the thing when not in use. Thats literally almoast no maitanance and an insane amount of fuel savings your point is not valid at all.
@themomorain if you think what i think you think then this thing will get constantly stuck after breaking a piece of ice since the wheel pushing ice down would hit the next ice plate and then stop

This is why Russia invaded Ukraine. Without the port in Sevastopol, Russia would have no warm water port in the west and would have to ship everything through this in the winter.
That's exactly how I thought they break through ice..
Same 😂😂😂
That’s what I was about to say 😂😂 it’s literally how I think all people think ice breakers do it

@@winstonwolff This is the first time I've thought of that. Holy cow. Excuse for over inflated prices
I already knew how they worked but this was a well produced video, well done!
Shout out to the cameraman who stood down on the ice while the giant ship smashed it around him.
Cameraman never dies 😂
Smdh he could've at least helped the icebreaker 😡
🤔

The break ice exactly like I thought.
I just thought there was some new 2023-24 method.
Yea I like how much detail he went into though it's pretty informative @@LeeePowers
I knew icebreakers had different hulls, but man you hit it out of the park with this highly explanative production!!!
Amazing Production My Man, Thx For Making This Highly Detailed Explanation Of Ice Breakers 🚢🚢🚢
9:35 I love how these are just big buildings on boats or in this case a flippin raised landing pad on the deck
Very cool video!
ahaha icy wat u did there
so they don't strap a bunch of tiny gnomes with little saws to the front of the ship??? I've had this all wrong for years
😂😂😂
literally everyone watching this thought this was how icebreakers work. still watched the whole thing. so. except for the stupid title, good video.
Fantastic explanation. Technical and straightforward.

Great video. Very informative and well put together. Thanks for the knowledge!
This was quite interesting and very entertaining to me..

Is there any picture/videos of the nuclear reactor ? it's like a micro reactor ?
There should be information about OK-150 and OK-900(a) which were used in Soviet designs, not sure if there's anything easily accessible about newer reactors.
This is exactly how I thought they break through
All other ice breakers try to avoid ice, the Russian tea kettles don’t care
Breaking the ice to let ships move forward, and they want us to switch to EVs to save the planet 😂
I want a cruise ship with an icebreaker hull.
I thought all the ice was gone.
Precisely how i thought the break ice. You told me nothing new.
It's probably not practical and someone has surely already thought this idea but I wonder- what if you had a second hull for the front breaker end that could retract when not breaking ice or the opposite- it retracts when not in the open Sea, so you can reshape the front for optimal ice-breaking and open sea travel. How thick are the hulls of those ships???
Idk where your from but 9.2 feet isn't as tall as my house my house has 8 foot ceilings
What you don't know about how I think ice breakers break ice is greater than the displacement of your average ice breaker.
15:38 What? Kazakhstan icebreaker? WTF?
Yep, it's called "tulpar" and apparently was made by Denmark and released on water in 2002
Austria has an ice breaker?
In fact they use the force of Yxfittan to break the ice.
They must have huge air compressors.
nuclear is the way for shipping industry but requires a special crew we could reduce a lot of emissions just by going nuclear ships

So they drive into it. I knew that when I was five
They totally do though.
Put a big buzz saw on the front. Or flamethrower
neat. I'm no environmentalist, but I can't help but wonder if breaking all this ice increases the rate of melt?
I can imagine if it's warm enough they could...but it doesn't look like it's getting any warmer there...
I have a similar concern with the rockets.they send through the atmosphere..thousands. doesn't it compromise the protection from the rays from space..?
Yes it increases the surface area so it melts easier but ice on water melting does not impact sea levels
Small amount just due to how large ice sheets are and that they would likely refreeze after the shup passes.
One of the bigger issues scientists are worried about (atleast if we start doing more shipping through the arctic) is black carbon from diesel exhaust scattering onto large areas of glaciers, changing albedo of the ice, and making it melt faster.

so they break the ice how exactly anyone would think they do?

Save the waste of nu pellets is exceedingly toxic and does'nt breakdown naturally.
Nuclear waste does in fact breakdown naturally.
Wrong
Why don’t they have some sorts of wheels in the front so when the boat climbs onto the ice it can sort of pull itself along on the front wheels. Would be so much more efficient!
More moving parts in contact with the colliding ice means more maintenance
