The tip about clusters of fur opened my eyes. Never thought about it that way. It makes fur rendering more realistic regardles of style. Your videos are simple - in a way - but very dense with useful information. And fun to watch. Thank you.
How you explain by breaking down structures of forms makes drawing so much easier. This fur demo reminds me of Jazz. Plus, the jazz music in the video made me think of it too. When I first was learning how to play jazz, the thought of improvising seemed so hard like looking at the single strands of hair is intimidating to tackle too. But learning that there is a foundation to improvising, and drawing complex things like fur, is based on a foundation was a big help. The chords of the song, and the music is based on the major scale, like the complex fur is based on simple shapes that get more complex. Improvisation, like this example, has direction, clusters, and, like the values of light and shadow change, so does the dynamics of the music. And one decides when playing, what tones to use and it can change depending on how you feel and how you imagine the results can be seen and felt, just like a piece of art. And just like putting the bold strokes in the wrong spot, one can play some wrong notes. And practice makes perfect.
Alphonso, I want to thank you for your lessons on drawing fur. I drew the rhythm and lighting part always forgetting about the clusters, but now that you shed some light on it, I see it makes a big difference in thinking. You've helped me step up my game.
YES! I thought you were gone forever! Your videos have inspired me to pick up drawing again (I’m 22). It was always something I’ve enjoyed doing growing up, but it just kinda vanished from my life at some point. You have no idea how happy it makes me feel, knowing that I’ve found something I love doing because of the process of doing it, not the end result. Thank you Alphonso, I am definitely buying your book soon. Your way of teaching is excellent, everything you say makes sense to me even though I’m nowhere near your skill level haha 😆 Edit: as to your book, would u recommend it for someone who is mainly interested in drawing with pencils/graphite? Obviously your books are titled „pen and ink” but I feel like it would still apply to graphite in majority of instances. Anyone else who bought the book (or not!), feel free to give me advice 😁
Hey! For pencil and graphite there may be some techniques that will differ since pencil and graphite are blendable, however i think a good point is made in this review of Alphonso's work; ua-cam.com/video/AD1AX-yXPL8/v-deo.html To summarize the key point, whether you are working with pencil or pen, the foundation of line quality and varience is still the same. With pencil and other mediums like it, you just need to know what details you need to stress vs ones you don't and practicing your linework with the other principles will help with that. I hope this is useful! I wish I could say more on the topic but I'm more of an inker myself. Good luck!
I’ve learnt so much about how to draw from your videos. I even scored my tattoo apprenticeship recently, huge thanks to you Alphonso. I just purchased your two books and cannot wait to learn more! Big respect, from Australia
This really is the best. I've looked at other videos with pencil, but pen is so crystallised and defined by nature that the technique is beautifully clear....love your books...every one needs them.
Mr Dunn, I have at least 1 of your pen-and-ink books and didn’t realize it until this vid. Currently I’m working mostly on maps for a fantacosm I’ve written. Could you please in some future vid describe best approaches to this subject - media, paper, etc? (I’ve found so far that artmarkers seem best - over a limited map width/height. Could you also make a vid on how best to render a pseudo-steel engraving look? Is it pencil over textured paper?
Love the new popup tips! Maybe one day you could dub your soothing voice in for the tips!! Love to hear what youre thinking as you apply the ink to the paper.
Usefull indeed. Timely too, I was planning to do some drawings of our animals. Just did a lamb in charcoal. This makes we want to have a go at the dogs in ink...
oh thank you so much Mr dunno what's your territorial on for because I have a very hard time with that and I watched it and studied it and you're amazing but mine came out horrible I don't know what I'm doing wrong can you give me a tip or what I can do or what book would help me the most of yours
Hi, i'm Pierre from a little village in France and i've just received your books and i'm very pleased with them. Thank you very much for charing your experience.
Super clear and useful like always, Thank you! Please please please do more videos.. just an un edited time lapse of you doodling around can be also super useful to see.
Tq! :D I finally understood how to fur by step,as a meaning of fact about this tutorial.I recommend this to people who draws fur or animals a lot, also Alphonso.Tq very much! :>
Alphonso, I wish your demo would have been of something recognizable as something with fur, for example if you'd quick sketched a dog and then worked on the back leg in a bit more detail. The reason is, that your final demo could be plant matter too. It doesn't necessarily read as fur without context.
@@alphonsodunn thank you:) I pre-bought your book, but didn't realize until today for some reason about the workbook. It's on my wish list on Amazon because I'm broke right now;)
Hey Alphonso! Thank you so much for your videos, Always. I live here in the coutryside of Brazil and it's a little difficult to me to buy material things on Amazon. Do you have any intention on making your books availiable on e-book, on Amazon? Love your work.
Awsome video sir, I've watched your videos for awhile now, you've inspired me, now i can use pen to a medium level and hope to get better. Keep up the fine work, much respect.
First of great vid. I've been really on The Struggle Bus for drawing fog, in any land landscape and I was wondering if you could give some tips/ tricks Maybe in a tutorial or something
Thank you for the awesome tutorial! I am struggling with drawing short fur though, like cat's fir, almost fluff. I am having hard time conveying the volume and not having the drawing overworked :( Hopefully you will cover this type of fur in your next tutorials... this one says it's part 1, so I am hopeful and waiting... Thank you Alphonso, you are a great inspiration for many! And I really love your books - have both of them.
Hey bud .... I have been learning a lot from your tutorials ....I recently purchased some online drawing courses at Udemy ....it would be awesome if you had a lecture on there .... check it you drawing skill is awesome I am just starting my journey
He is the best art teacher of our time . (Those who agree hit like)

Are you saying she's hairy?
😂😂😂🤣
Ohhh snap go off 🤣🤭

The dislikes are the people who fell asleep and accidentally clicked it while drawing lots of fur

So good 🤩
useful tricks, thank a lot
🙏
Does this technique can be also be applied when drawing hair?
Great video as always!
Yes it can!
Can you do a a hand tutorial? Those things are IMO one of the most difficult things to draw.
hands can be broken to cylinder or cube shape(for the fingers) and the thumb can be separate to cube, cylinder and sphere take it easy :)
Thanks for this, it's really helpful.

It could be a tail, an ear, body and more. The concepts is whats most important then application later. I will do more concrete examples later on 🙂
